Peterson pool repaired, running smoothly

By Airman 1st Class Ryan Prince | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Peterson Air Force Base Aquatic Center reopened June 1, 2021 after a Dec. 30, 2020 closure due to problems with humidity control.

“Malfunctions [in the facility] had increased the humidity resulting in uncontrolled condensation causing mold, rust and other facility damage concerns, including water saturation of an electrical panel,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Jamila Edgerson, 21st Force Support Squadron operations officer.

Prior to the facility closure, monthly there were about 1,000 swimmers, approximately 12,000 annually, that used the pool for physical fitness and morale.

According to Edgerson, the approximate total to complete the repairs was $411,000.

Maintenance and updates in the facility included repairs to the baby pool roof, facility Pool Pak Unit (humidity control unit), water slide pump, main pool boilers and pumps; replacement of the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration system filters; installation of new plaster pool liners on both the main and baby pool; and minor updates to the locker rooms.

As of June 1, the new operating hours are: Lap Swimming: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Open Swimming: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Shallow-end Fitness: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 5:30 a.m. - 10 a.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. – Community College of the Air Force graduates at a ceremony at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, June 2, 2021. The CCAF has more than 370,000 registered students and each year students earn more than 1.6 million hours of college credit.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Community College of the Air Force concept evolved in the early 1970s as means for Airmen to gain recognition for their U.S. Air Force training.

Further education provides Airmen an opportunity to be better at their jobs within the Air Force and to make them more competitive once they leave the military service.

The CCAF Graduation Ceremony is a bi-annual event that recognizes enlisted members of Peterson-Schriever Garrison, who have completed the requirements for an Associate of Applied Science Degree through the CCAF. This event was a combined Spring/Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 event due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Peterson, Schriever Airmen connect through video gaming club

By Fin Truant | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Over the last year of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s been challenging for Airmen and Guardians to connect with their peers, but two PetersonSchriever Garrison Airmen found a way to overcome and form bonds in a simple way: they formed a video game club.

“I'm a huge video gamer, so I haven't really been struggling too much with all the free time,” said Airman 1st Class Christian Anderson, 21st Communication Squadron cable and antenna technician. “But I figured that there'd be a lot of other people that are in a similar position, and maybe we could get people in contact with each other and get to know other Airmen on base.”

Anderson saw advertising around base encouraging Airmen and Guardians to establish or join clubs to connect with others as well as pass the time at home that COVID-19 restrictions created. However, there was no video game club listed, so he reached out to the person in charge of clubs, Staff Sgt.

Andrew Tello, 21st Communications Squadron unit training and deployment manager. With Tello’s advice and assistance in promoting the club, Anderson started a server on an instant messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol service to connect video game-playing Airmen and Guardians. Currently, he co-leads the club with Senior Airman Brice Brewington, 50th Operations Support Squadron satellite communications operator, who is stationed at Schriever AFB. The club has mostly been advertised to dormitory service members so far, but over 20 Airmen and Guardians have joined the club’s VoIP server, and plans exist to advertise the club across Front Range military communities.

“We’ve tried our best to seek out what games people want to play or [organize] a tournament online,” said Anderson.

Buckley receives new name, commander

Buckley Garrison Public Affairs BUCKLEY SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — During a historical U.S. Space Force ceremony, the Department of the Air Force renamed Buckley Air Force Base to Buckley Space Force Base at the Leadership Development Center, June 4, 2021.

Lt. Gen. Stephen Whiting, the commander of Space Operations Command, presided over the Base Renaming and Buckley Garrison Assumption of Command ceremonies.

"Moving forward, Buckley Space Force Base will continue to flourish as a hotbed for integrating new military space technologies, taking on new operational challenges, and providing innovative host support to its “Big Six” mission partners: Space Delta 4, the Colorado Air National Guard’s 140th Wing, the Army Aviation Support Facility, the Navy Operational Support Center, Air Reserve Personnel Center, and the Aerospace Data FacilityColorado," remarked Whiting.

With Federmann serving as a spiritual leader at Lompoc Foursquare Church, one might not see the immediate connection between spirituality and base security. However, the answer is in the people and the community. Vandenberg Security Forces have one of the most unique missions in the entire Air Force: the daily defense of active space launch at the Air Force's third largest installation. The expanse of their mission particularly stood out to Bernie, but he will tell you that the most fulfilling aspect of his position as honorary

commander is supporting the people.

Federmann reflected on his established connections with military members, "I think the most informative thing is the one-on-one, when you look into the eyes of someone who's serving our country, and you get to ask, 'Where are you from?' I love missile launches, don't get me wrong, but I think the greatest value is fostering the connections between military families and the community.”

The framework for this gaming club, and many others on base, was spawned in late 2019, after a resilience event that encouraged Peterson AFB Airmen to build closer ties to one another with empathy, compassion and vulnerability. Tello assisted in bringing the programing to Peterson with support from violence prevention integrator Michel Cremeans. Tello had attended a similar event in his teens and he wanted to share what he’d learned with his fellow service members. One of the big takeaways from the resilience event was an impetus to “be the change” to make healthier, more interconnected workplaces and communities. This led to the formation of a “Be the Change” group on base, which spawned the idea for clubs in turn.

“The purpose of the clubs is to connect all the members at Peterson and Schriever,” said Tello. “[That] includes any spouses, dependents, contractors, military, civilian and DoD [personnel], as long as they're at least 18 years old.

Three goals we're looking for [are]: people to meet new people, to foster a sense of community, and we want to spend time doing what they already like to do.”

For Anderson and Brewington, that initiative means big things are on the horizon for their video game club.

“With COVID and work from home, it’s difficult to try and plan or advertise anything… but we’ve been working on remodeling part of the bowling alley to become a gaming center,” said Anderson. “We haven’t come up with a cool name yet, but we wanted to have maybe 10 to 12 PCs for local tournaments.”

Marcus Jackson, Buckley Garrison commander. “This name change does not bespeak a change in Buckley’s mission, but rather signifies a realignment of our installation under the Space Force.

After the base was officially renamed, Jackson assumed command. As the new Buckley Garrison commander, he highlighted the multi-faceted mission of the joint base and how Buckley is lethal across multiple domains – Air, Space, Cyberspace, Land, and Sea – because of the total-force integrated team integral to the success of the missile warning mission along with the success of Team Buckley.

Jackson concluded by expressing his gratitude towards his mentors and family who supported him as well as his excitement for this leadership opportunity.

“While I am sure that there will be some long days and sleepless nights, I am excited to command at the Garrison level and more specifically work closely with the men and women of Buckley to make it the best Space Force Base.”

to hear the commander's heart for her people. I got to check in with her and her concerns," he stated.

Federmann values listening to the commander's priorities and seeking ways that he can support the unit and its members. He noted, "These commanders are busy enough as it is, and I view it as my job to ask how I, my church, my connections, my influence add value to what you do?" More often than not, his answer is family support. Defenders around Vandenberg know the leader for his support of holiday events for service members and their families.

The Honorary Commander says that this interpersonal connection is one of the most rewarding aspects of his involvement in the program. During his time as Honorary Commander, Federmann and his church have facilitated Halloween events, Christmas events, Easter events, and more.

Last Christmas, he helped prepare more than 200 ham dinners for military members during Christmas to defenders and their families. The meal distribution was accomplished in collaboration with the Vandenberg Village Coffee Shop and his networks as a local church pastor. "It builds a deeper sense of support when you hand something tangible," said Federmann.

He prides himself on bringing smiles to the faces of Team V and their families. "As a civilian and someone who's never been in the military, it really is an honor to serve those who are serving.”

The Honorary Commander Program at Vandenberg Space Force Base is a paired partnership between local leaders and base leadership. The distinction of the Honorary Commander position comes with a two-year term filled with exposure to Vandenberg missions through a series of tours, volunteering engagements, shadowing programs, and heritage celebrations.

The Vandenberg Public Affairs office manages the honorary commander's program. Honorary commander candidates must be U.S. citizens of good character with a leadership position in local, regional, or national affairs.

They cannot be an employee of the federal government, an active or retired military member. They must not hold financial interests that conflict with their role as a Vandenberg partner.
