Do not let driver fatigue disrupt your summer travel plans

ummer is quickly approaching. Though, it may not seem like it here in Colorado, this means many of us will be spending extra time behind the wheel as we drive to vacation destinations, recreational activities, and social events. Driving with little sleep erodes our ability to operate a vehicle safely as the miles add up. Though driving fatigued may seem harmless, it can have very devastating consequences. Do not let yourself become just another statistic in the drowsy or fatigued driving category.

In 2015, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that 90,000 police- reported crashes involved drowsy drivers. Those accidents resulted in more than 800 deaths. In 2017, drowsy driving was responsible for taking the lives of 795 people across the country.

These numbers are merely estimates, but the actual numbers are believed to be much higher. Some studies even suggest

the number of deaths due to drowsy or fatigued driving could be upward of 5,000. Fortunately, there are ways to combat driver fatigue that will assist you in arriving at your destination safe and sound.

First and most importantly, get plenty of rest before you need to drive anywhere. Sleep deprivation can creep up on a person, so getting proper sleep is essential. While we all require different amounts of sleep, most adults require seven to nine hours per night.

Second, avoid drinking alcohol the night prior to your trip. Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but it disrupts your rapid eye movement sleep, which is necessary for mental restoration.

Recognize the signs of driver fatigue: difficulty focusing, blinking more than normal, excessive yawning, heavy eye-

lids, slower reaction time, and driving speeds creep up or down. If you have any of these symptoms or signs, do not continue driving.

Do not drive between midnight and 6 a.m. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most drowsy driving crashes occur between these times.

Do not take medications that may make you drowsy before you drive.

Do not drink and drive. Buzzed driving is drunk driving.

You may have noticed the consumption of coffee or energy drinks was not mentioned. While those drinks may help you feel more alert, the effects are short term. After drinking coffee or energy drinks, it is still possible to have brief losses of consciousness, which can last up to five seconds. That means at 65 mph you would have traveled 480 feet down the road unaware. That is more than enough time and distance to become another statistic.

Using these strategies, or ones you develop on your own, may be the difference between having a summertime travel experience that is terrific or having one that is tragic. Be safe and smart while driving and remember that driver fatigue is a hazard that you should protect yourself against every time you are behind the wheel, summer or not.

The use of small package express carriers is widely used on Peterson Air Force Base without establishing proper shipping accounts approval from the installation Transportation Officer (TO). Peterson AFB currently has seven authorized accounts on the installation to date. 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron has been directed by Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center to scrutinize accounts and minimize unauthorized accounts to the lowest extent possible. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Master Sgt. Christopher Engelke, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Fire Emergency Services Flight superintendent, is the 2018 Geico Military Service Award winner. The award is selected amongst candidates from all U.S. military enlisted branches to include National Guard and Reserve units, and recognizes military excellence in enlisted service members.

The Air Force selects one of four top performers to compete against the other uniformed services on a national level. The entire selection process takes at least five months against the military’s best of the best.

“I was happy to have been nominated for the award but wasn’t too concerned about it since I recognize that there is still room for improvement in myself and my organization,” said Engelke.

Engelke was nominated for the award for his work both on and off-duty. One noteworthy incident included his actions as a first responder to a severe four-car collision. Taking control of the scene, he led six different response teams, and rendered first aid to a pregnant mother and injured drivers.

The finalist for the Geico award received an all-expense paid trip with their dependents to Washington, D.C., where the winner was announced. Engelke and his family attended tours at the Marine Corp War Memorial, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and met with the Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

“I got to meet each of the services senior enlisted leaders, which was an honor and a privilege,” said Engelke. “But the highlight of the trip, was being able to participate in the laying of the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Truly an awesome experience.”

Coming from humble beginnings, Engelke, is a first generation German immigrant. His father, Hans Joachim Hermann Engelke, was an exchange student majoring in agricultural studies in Basin City, Washington. Hans enlisted in the German Air Force, after completing his foreign exchange program. He was later assigned to a German detachment back in El Paso, Texas where he met his wife, an American citizen.

His upbringing on a farm in Washington helped to forge who he is today. “I guess since I grew up on a farm and learning the ethics of hard work and the values of selfless service really doesn’t translate to personal recognition,” said Engelke.

His advice for new junior non-commissioned officers: “You don’t have to be so hard with your troops when counseling them; you can inadvertently break your Airmen. They’re very much like crops, if you give them what they need, they’ll grow, but each person requires different elements for their own personal growth to succeed.”

By Airman 1st Class Quion Lowe | 49TH WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. — The U.S. Air Force has a reputation of holding Airmen to a high standard. For physical fitness specifically, that standard is assessed by a waist measurement, push-ups, sit-ups and a 1.5 mile run.

However, working out does not always have to be a chore – there are many avenues available where one can maintain physical fitness and boost their morale.

For Maj. Zachary Garrett, 49th Aerospace Medical Squadron human performance flight commander, he chooses elite cycling as a means to stay fit.

Garrett got into competitive cycling at a young age. After participating in many triathlons he eventually narrowed his focus to cycling and has used his talent and experience throughout his career in the U.S. Air Force.

He even cycled with the U.S. Armed Forces cycling team for approximately three years.

The benefits of playing sports at such a high level are not only physical, but mental as well.

Garrett said cycling helped him with setting and achieving long-term goals, a very essential skill for any career.

“I diagram it out and tell myself, ‘I want to be at this level of fitness around this week of the year,’” said Garrett. “It gives you some of that long-term planning that may be about a year in advance.”

In elite cycling, it is standard for races to last for hours and in some cases, like the Tour de France, competitors can ride

for 90 miles a day for two weeks.

Garrett said daunting tasks like training for a race are great preparation for staying engaged during long workdays in any career field.

Although there are some similarities between having a successful military career and competing in cycling at an elite level, there are a lot of key differences that can be challenging when juggling both at the same time.

One challenge Garrett mentioned is how difficult it was when he was competing, getting to all the different locations of high level races around the world.

“When I was attending the Air Force Academy, (traveling to cycle) was much more restrictive,” said Garrett. “But once I was on active duty and competing with the Armed Forces cycling team, it was easier to go to the commander and say, ‘can I have two weeks off to go to Italy and Slovenia?’ It also helped to mention it was for the military world championship.”

Even though cycling is not an area tested in the Air Force Physical Fitness Test, and it takes extra effort to stay at a high level, finding a fun way to work out is worth the energy and it can be adjusted to fit AF PFT standards.

“For all the new Airmen out there, look around for stuff that interests you,” said Garrett. “If you don’t like running but you like swimming, let’s get you in the pool. Any beneficial activity that moves you will move you forward in the Air Force.”

Carmel’s MilSpouse Career Program and partners at PrepConnect360 provided the answer. “It was difficult for me to communicate my skillset in meaningful ways,” said Gail. “Mt. Carmel helped me develop a new resume and provided very encouraging career counseling.” With a current resume, Gail enrolled in PC360. “The class was so thorough; it really walks you through the steps of job search through interview success. The class built me up to someone I hadn’t seen before -- I found Gail the medical assistant who felt confident to walk in the door and say, ‘this is who I am; these are my job skills and this is how I can help your organization.’” PC360 helps transitioning service members and careerseeking military spouses effectively enter the workforce after answering a profound question, “Career wise, what do I want to do next?” The class includes resume and job interview skills development, networking experience and more. PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 7th Space Warning Squadron, home of the bandits, Beale Air Force Base, California, has a long-standing history of excellence in early missile warning detection and deterrence. In the 1980s, the original 7th Missile Warning Squadron under Air Force Space Command, transitioned to the 7th SWS under the 21st Space Wing and has held the mission of missile warning, missile defense, space situational awareness, and deterrence in defense of the U.S. and its allies.

To better execute this mission, 7th SWS is refreshing aging technology to increase performance and decrease the physical footprint by reducing the number of server racks.

The UEWR Gen II will increase the computer processing power and replace obsolete equipment, enabling increased mission readiness, not just at 7th SWS, but across the Ground Based Radar Network. Five sites await implementation of this enhancement; two of which will be new additions to the missile defense detection network able to join the missile defense mission for the first time.

Construction has been completed and the revised system is expected to be fully operational at Beale Air Force Base by the end of 2019.

“This system is a great improvement over the previous one, and it has finally come to fruition,” said 1st Lt. Joshua Haneline, 7th Space Warning Squadron, Mission Assurance Deputy Flight Commander. “This project has been a monumental undertaking, so we are really excited to fully implement the system and utilize its anticipated benefits.”

The improved system works in tandem with other ground, air, satellite, and shipboard early warning detection systems feeding the global array used to track, triangulate and ultimately intercept hostile missile threats.

The radars at Clear Air Force Station, Alaska and Cape Cod Air Force Station, Massachusetts will add missile defense to their mission platforms adding to the already formidable radar detection and tracking capabilities.

“As we move forward with this weapon system enhancement, 7th SWS stands ready to be the first radar to take advantage of the increased processing power and improved sustainability that the upgrade provides,” said Lt. Col. Charles Sandusky, 7th SWS commander. “Our mission is to provide flawless missile warning, missile defense, and space surveillance. This improvement ensures our space warfighters are able to do this now and well into the future.”
