Six healthy self-care tips

By Chief Master Sgt. Edward Vargas | 21ST AEROSPACE MEDICINE SQUADRON PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — In my opinion, one of the most profound concepts of self-care is echoed each time I fly on a commercial airline, “Place your oxygen mask on first before helping others.”

For many of us, we task saturate our lives in order to ensure those who rely on us are taken care of. Although those closest to us take priority in our lives, we can only help others when we are well balanced and in optimum health.

With that, I have devised six tips for self-care.

Consult with friends/family Airmen at every level experience high levels of stress and anxiety that affects us on a personal level. Find a real person that you trust and talk to them about what troubles you.

Avoid sharing intimate details of your life on social media.

Holding onto emotional baggage is not a sign of strength.

Instead, having the courage to be transparent and vulnerable is needed, providing us an outlet that can strengthen our personal relationships. Additionally, seek advice from a first sergeant, supervisor or mental health professional for more serious concerns.

Reserve time for yourself Many of us sit at a computer most of the day, bombarded with endless emails and last minute taskers, just to find there are more to-do’s on our personal accounts. Our calendar reminders sound off throughout the workday and

even remind us to complete something for someone else.

Schedule time on your calendar to do something you enjoy during the week. Whether it’s reading a good book, taking a walk or turning off your social media reminders, allow yourself some free time to clear your mind. Read something that brings you joy or inspiration in order to recharge your batteries for the week.

Calling all “people pleasers!”

Don’t be afraid to say “no” from time to time. For example, if after a long, hard week, your neighbor asks you to dog sit for the third time after you’ve just pulled gate guard duty in 8-degree weather and covered a co-worker’s shift who took leave at the last minute, it’s OK to say no. For some of us, this isn’t easy, but train yourself to say no when you just need a breather.

Integrity and values At times, we may not feel our hearts are in agreement with what we are required to perform at work. I recommend staying grounded in your personal beliefs. Whenever possible, practice behavior that reaffirms your personal value system and protect the part of you that makes you unique.

For example, the work environment may not be the best place to express your passion about food waste by monitoring the break room trash can and lecturing staff concerning the latest statistics on world hunger. Instead, donate to a local

food bank or volunteer to serve homeless veterans if that is your thing.

Maintain physical health We have heard repeatedly to eat right and exercise. That is important, but we must not forget the importance of a good night’s sleep. Manage your time well enough to ensure you are getting a healthy amount of sleep every night by setting specific times for yourself when you are working on a project or homework. Rest is just as important as exercise.

Prep the battlefield Stay informed on events that may affect you and loved ones, and prepare. If you are anticipating a long temporary duty or deployment, ensure their needs will be met in the best way possible before you depart. This will help you maintain peace of mind. Reach out to supporting organizations or trusted friends when needed. In addition, read about upcoming events published in papers or directives and gain a strategic advantage for potential life-altering events.

Your career, family and friends will continue to demand your time and attention. Balancing and prioritizing your time will remain a daily challenge. Although serving in this capacity may give us joy and purpose, don’t forget to fortify yourself so you can remain a positive force for those you choose to serve.

USAFA BAND TO PERFORM ARMED FORCES DAY CONCERT

The United States Air Force Academy Band presents “Champions of Freedom” at the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts in Colorado Springs, May 14 at 7 p.m. This year the Colorado Springs Chorale will join the Academy’s Concert Band in a program that honors our nation, veterans, and the men and women in uniform who currently serve. The concert is free and open to the public. A limited number of free general admission tickets (maximum 4 per person) will be available at the Peterson Air Force Base ITT Office. Additional tickets will be available at the Pikes Peak Center Box Office beginning Friday, May 3.

21ST LOGISTICS READINESS SQUADRON CARGO MOVEMENT OPERATING SYSTEM, DOWN TIME

The 21st LRS Cargo Movement Operating System, the shipping system for the Cargo Movement section in building 660, will be unavailable beginning Tuesday, April 30 through Wednesday, May 15. Transportation Officers will be implementing manual Emergency Processing Procedures (degraded operations) to ensure priority shipments (e.g., 999/NMCS/MICAP/777) and short Required Delivery Date items continue to move. All other shipments will not ship until CMOS is back on line. Air Force hosts Gold Star and Surviving Family Members summit

By Angelina Casarez | AIR FORCE’S PERSONNEL CENTER PUBLIC AFFAIRS SHALIMAR, Fla. (AFNS) — The Air Force hosted its first Gold Star and Surviving Family Members Summit at the Air Force Enlisted Village, Shalimar, Florida, April 30.

The event, supported by the Air Force Families Forever Program, focused on enduring support for Gold Star and Surviving family members.

“So many of you, even in your grief, have shown us what it means to be resilient, to create post traumatic growth, to take life’s challenges and meet them head on by creating awareness,” said Mrs. Dawn Goldfein, spouse of the Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. “Today is about sharing, listening and inspiring. My husband and I cannot thank you enough for being here and for your willingness to share your ideas, stories and your heart.”

Surviving family members from the local area were invited to attend the event. They provided insight on how the program has helped them and how the Air Force can continue to support surviving families in the future.

“We are here to share information, to listen and advance the support for Gold Star and Surviving Family Members,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force Manpower, Personnel

and Services deputy chief of staff.

It was an intimate setting, with fewer than 40 surviving family members in attendance.

They shared special memories of their loved ones and met and talked with leadership about their experiences as a surviving family member. For those unable to attend, there was an opportunity to take part virtually during a Facebook live question and answer session with a panel of subject matter experts from the Air Force Families Forever and Casualty Affairs programs, Office of the Secretary of Defense and Veterans Affairs Office of Survivors Assistance, as well as several Gold Star members.

“Providing this event to surviving families is an important step in the right direction as we continue to strengthen the Air Force Families Forever program,” said Peggy Haldeman, Airman and Family Readiness policy analyst.

“Our goal is to take the feedback we received, review our policies and see how we can continue to build a gold standard program for the Air Force.”

Throughout the day, families echoed sentiments of how important it is to not only be around other surviving family members, but to continue to speak the names of their fallen Airmen. Events such as these

Drones: What to watch for

— In April 2014, a 27-year-old Moroccan national was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for numerous immigration violations, but also expressed his desire to attack a federal building in Connecticut using a “remote-controlled, hobby-type airplane.”

In September 2011, the FBI arrested a 26-year-old U.S. citizen who was plotting to build a small explosives-laden, remote-controlled aircraft to attack several targets in the National Capital Region.

These two incidents demonstrate a desire for homegrown violent extremists to replicate tactics used by terrorist groups in places like Iraq and Syria, and even in places a little closer to home like Venezuela and Mexico.

The small unmanned aircraft system, or drone, has quickly become a growing concern for the nation as well as the Department of Defense due to their popularity. These concerns are only exacerbated by the idea that homegrown violent extremists in the U.S. are willing to weaponize these drones in order to further their ideological, religious, or political agenda. This will to turn drones into weapons is a concern we all must take serious at all DoD Installations to include treating any type of SUAS as a potential explosive device or nefarious act.

If a SUAS is observed flying over the installation or near the installation, personnel must first direct their attention outward and upward to attempt to locate individuals who are holding a controller or device and appear to be operating a SUAS. Look at windows, balconies, rooftops and open

spaces. For special events, predetermine likely locations that would enable a person to control a drone.

Second, personnel should report the incident to Security Forces immediately and then continue to observe the object while maintaining visibility of the device.

Be sure to monitor the direction of travel, any damage to facilities and the location of any suspicious individuals. Take note of and identify the type of device, size, shape, color, payload, video camera equipment and activity.

Finally, execute appropriate security measures by maintaining a safe environment for the public and first responders. Document event details including photographs of the SUAS, if possible. In the event a drone is discovered on the ground and is inoperable, treat it as a suspicious item. Move to a safe distance and evacuate others away from the device, document the location of the object, call Security Forces immediately, and most importantly, DO NOT TOUCH IT! Personnel on Peterson AFB and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station should always identify and report potentially suspicious drone activities, whether the drone is flying or it has crashed. Identifying, reporting and implementing security practices are key to successfully managing SUAS incidents.

Although no single solution can fully mitigate drone incidents, it’s important to understand that implementing these security measures is vital in protecting our personnel and resources from serious injury and damage. Air Force Global Housing Symposium aims to correct housing issues

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-LACKLAND, Texas (AFNS) — “Families First” is the mantra behind the Air Force’s Housing Privatization program improvement plan which is taking front and center attention at the Air Force’s Global Housing Symposium, which kicked off May 7, in downtown San Antonio.

The plan, which includes five major lines of effort, outlines 27 initiatives to correct housing issues identified following a servicewide review of health and safety concerns.

Col. Michael Beach, Air Force Housing Program chief, said ensuring Airmen and their families live in safe, quality homes is not a fire-and-forget mission.

“Our most important resource is our people,” he said.

“We’ve listened to residents, reviewed survey feedback and have taken a top-to-bottom look at our processes, policies and procedures to identify what’s broken, and fix it.”

Beach is taking that same message to the Global Housing Symposium. There Air Force housing management staff and base civil engineers from across the Air Force are gathering alongside project owners to discuss the current, worldwide status of Air Force housing under one roof.

Commencing with a keynote speech from Hon. John Henderson, assistant secretary of the Air Force for installations, environment and energy, the symposium is slated to update, train and inform attendees on topics that keep them up to date and able to serve the Airmen of their installations with the highest service level possible.

The agenda boasts experts speaking on “everything you wanted to know about mold,” and panel discussions where attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the program leaders concerning policy changes, roles and responsibilities and manpower. Included in the agenda is a daylong project owners’ meeting where Air Force leadership and the project owners will discuss the best course of action moving forward for the privatized housing program, with Airmen and their families’ health and safety at the center of the conversation.

The symposium is a biennial event organized by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center to bring Air Force housing professionals together to improve housing services for Airmen and their families. This year’s event is an opportunity for program leaders to discuss “Families First” and address some of the health and safety concerns they’re working to overcome.

The Air Force began to utilize housing privatization in 1996 as a quick and effective vehicle for transforming the base housing inventory and improving the quality of life for Airmen and their families.

Over the past two decades, the housing privatization program aimed to eliminate inadequate housing and expand services for residents, such as community centers and updated shared facilities.

While the program has successfully improved the inventory of homes and community amenities overall, the Air Force is aware that new challenges will continue to surface and is working closely with the project owners to shift the focus to address resident concerns and improve the customer experience.

In response to Airmen families’ concerns and to ensure the long-term success of the privatized housing portfolio, the Air Force Privatized Housing program developed five major lines of effort to provide safe and healthy housing for Airmen and their families: employing and revamping resident empowerment, oversight improvement, leadership engagement, improved oversight and policy standardization.

The five major lines of effort are in response to the 100

percent “boots on the ground” health and safety resident survey conducted by wing leadership in February 2019 to fully gauge resident concerns and housing conditions.

Initial data gathering efforts included a health and safety review involving 57,453 active duty members living on base.

Base leadership visited 9,861 homes as a major part of an extensive review of policies, procedures and best practices.

The Air Force’s campaign to improve privatized housing is already underway. A 24-hour, seven-day-a-week, toll-free helpline for residents to call about their privatized housing concerns, went live on May 1 and can be reached at 1-800482-6431. A few of the 27 “Families First” initiatives include: a Resident Bill of Rights to inform the lessee of their rights under a lease agreement, a more transparent work order process and a revised performance incentive fee plan.

vided comfort to each other as they shared experiences and talked through their individual needs as survivors and how best to keep their fallen heroes’ spirit alive. The consensus among survivors was that it’s invaluable to have support from each other, but also from the branch of service their fallen service member served.

“My favorite part of the event was meeting other Gold Star adult children,” said Jaclyn Mariano, daughter of Air Force Master Sgt. Jude Mariano, killed in action in 2004. “They gave me hope.”

Mariano is a Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors mentor to other children of fallen service members and her experiences as a survivor have encouraged her to pursue her medical degree in psychiatry, specializing in children with special needs.

The Air Force Families Forever program, established in 2010, ensures survivors of fallen Airmen receive specific

support at varying touchpoints after an Airman’s passing. Support is provided in the form of information and referral resources and connection to installation functions.

“You are Air Force Families forever, that’s our commitment to you,” said Kelly.

The summit participants included survivors of Airmen who died while on active duty. This includes Gold Star survivors whose Airmen died during combat or terrorist activities as well as those who died in peacetime.

“You are part of a military family, with an uncommon bond, one that has been strengthened through your shared experiences, your compassion and your tears,” Goldfein said. “You have raised our awareness and we will raise our standards. You are our Air Force family forever. We remember.”

“From my experience helping transitioning veterans and highly-skilled military spouses, it became so obvious: this is an incredible workforce to draw from to make our community safer,” said Cindy. “Veterans and Military Spouses bring great experience, skill and insight to the security industry, and Soteric Group recognizes this.”

The focus of Cindy’s company – a service-disabled, woman-owned small business – is to help employers, community and private organizations with threat vulnerability assessments, emergency preparedness training/planning; active shooter training; personal defense, trauma first aid; concealed weapons training; cyber risk management and more.

One recent Soteric Group client received a security threat assessment and personal defense training.

“This client wanted safe, secure office space for their staff and clients based on a business model that requires staff to often work alone in unpredictable and dangerous situations on a 24-hour schedule,” said Cindy.

Soteric Group consultants helped mitigate the risks and ensure the safety of the client’s workforce; they’ve done the same for churches, schools and other businesses.

“The partnership with Mt. Carmel allows Soteric Group to recruit professionals from the veteran and milspouse community to develop our assessment and training capabilities,” said Cindy. “This contributes greatly to safety and security awareness of our community – from the most experienced workforce possible – our veterans.”

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Grief takes many forms, but the grief that comes after losing loved ones to suicide is different. It’s complicated and isolating in a way other forms of grief and loss aren’t. That makes it all the more important to talk about.

Air Force veteran Kevin Van Thournout and wife, Betty Van Thournout, know that better than most. They are meeting facilitators for Heartbeat, a support group for those who have lost a loved one to suicide.

They host a meeting at Discovery Hall on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, every second Tuesday, January through November, to support and connect with members of the community who have suffered this loss.

Kevin and Betty joined the group seeking support and community. Their son, Ryan, completed suicide in 2014.

“We went to our first meeting three weeks after Ryan died and found it to be really hard but really helpful to talk about our loss, and to hear others’ stories and to know we weren't alone in this very different type of grief journey,” said Betty.

They attended regular meetings for two years until the group’s facilitators decided to retire, at which point they took over as meeting facilitators. With support from Michel Cremeans, the violence prevention integra-

tor at Peterson, they’ve started a monthly meeting on base to offer this community a smaller group that is timed to meet the needs of on-base employees and service members.

Kevin and Betty reiterate that suicide can happen in any family, no matter their circumstances.

“We want to break all barriers, all boundaries, all stigma,” said Betty. “You can be the wealthiest person in Colorado Springs.

You can be the poorest person in Colorado Springs. It can happen to you. It can happen to your family.”

Kevin notes that it’s easy to get consumed by guilt after a loved one completes suicide, to blame oneself and drown in what one could have done. He compares the guilt to putting oneself on trial.

“If you're going to put yourself on trial, I want to be there to make sure you get a fair trial,” he says, “because you're not guilty.”
