Horses stand under shelter in a stable at the U.S. Air Force Academy Equestrian Center. The center’s services include rental riding, guided trail rides and hayrides to Defense Department ID cardholders and their guests of all ages.

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — The coronavirus pandemic may have left many feeling isolated, but one organization at the Air Force Academy is designed to give base residents a chance to get outside and in touch with nature: the equestrian center.

“Horses, and animals in general, can have a healing and calming effect,” said the equestrian center’s manager, Kristen Wright. “Enjoying wildlife, nature and the horses is a wonderful activity that can be done alone or with family and friends.”

The equestrian center, open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, offers rental rides, guided trail rides, hayrides and facility tours to Defense Department beneficiaries and their guests of all ages. The equestrian center’s staff plans to offer mini camps this summer for patrons to learn about horse basics, said Wright. “[Horseback riding] is an outdoor activity that allows social distancing while enjoying nature alone, with a group or from the back of a horse or hay wagon,” she said. “It’s a unique part of our installation.”

The center also offers boarding services for DOD beneficiaries.

“We have over 100 boarded horses currently, of which their owners are retired, active duty, staff and cadets,” Wright said. “We offer different boarding options including community corrals.”

“We require all horses to be current on vaccines, have a health certificate and stay in our quarantine area for 10 days prior to going into main boarding areas,” Wright said.

Space Security Challenge 2021: Hack-A-Sat 2 registration opens, qualification round date announced

The U.S. Air and Space Forces in collaboration with the security research community opened registration May 4 for the qualification round of the second annual Space Security Challenge: Hack-A-Sat satellite hacking challenge. This virtual competition enables security researchers of all levels to focus their skills and creativity on solving cyber security challenges of space systems and incentivizes innovation in securing these systems.

ROME, N.Y. (AFRL) — The U.S. Air and Space Forces in collaboration with the security research community opened registration today for the qualification round of the second annual Space Security Challenge: HackA-Sat satellite hacking challenge.

This virtual competition enables security researchers of all levels to focus their skills and creativity on solving cyber security challenges of space systems and incentivizes innovation in securing these systems.

The Space Security Challenge 2021: Hack-A-Sat 2 begins with a Qualification Event that takes place June 26, 10 a.m. EDT through June 27, 4 p.m. EDT. Teams compete in a Jeopardy-style format, earning points based on speed and accuracy, for a chance to win one of ten prize packages that include $10,000.

The top eight teams from the qualifying round advance to an attack and defense Capture-the-Flag-style Hack-A-Sat 2 Final event, in which teams defend their satellite system while employing offensive measures on their opponent’s systems. Geared toward security researchers who have more advanced technical knowledge of space systems, this final event takes place Sept. 17, 6 p.m. EDT through Sept. 19, 6 p.m. EDT. The top-threefinishing teams receive $50,000 for first place, $30,000

for second place and $20,000 for third place.

Last year’s Hack-A-Sat 1, the inaugural Space Security Challenge, drew in more than 2,000 teams made up of more than 6,000 individuals, who were able to connect, learn and hone their skills in this first-of-its-kind, fully immersive contest experience. Among these teams were the world’s best hackers, who, during the final round, championed a never-been-done-before on-orbit satellite hacking challenge.

“The first Hack-A-Sat was a tremendous success in bringing together a diverse group of government, commercial, and private organizations and individuals to test and develop cybersecurity solutions for our unique space networks,” said Lt. Gen. John F. Thompson, Commander of the U.S. Space Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center.

As satellites provide the entire world with needed data transmission for capabilities like GPS and credit card transactions, the Departments of the Air & Space Force embraces the benefit of ethical hacking to advance cyber and space technology for both the military and industry.

“The security and cyber-resiliency of our on-orbit systems is an absolute necessity as we look to ensure the

peaceful development of the global commons of space over the coming decades. This required a multitude of specialties, so partnerships across the entire professional cybersecurity spectrum are vital to developing the nextgeneration of secure space systems,” Thompson said.

Battling cancer in combat boots

Service members look forward to the day they come home to decompress from the combat zone they've grown used to. Little did one deployed captain know, greater battles awaited her return.

Capt. Kathryn Nay, a defender currently assigned to the 140th Wing as the executive officer for the Colorado

Air National Guard, was only 37 years old when she was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. It was December of 2019, two short months after returning home from her deployment to Afghanistan.

“I was pretty numb when I found out,” said Nay. “Going from commanding forces on a flight line during active rocket attacks to finding out I had cancer immediately when I returned was just such a shock, and I had no idea what was available to help me at the time.”

Still being in her combat mode, Nay didn't have time to decompress from her deployment before re-

ceiving the news, and she didn't fully understand the resources available to her. Luckily, Nay’s leadership and her National Guard family knew exactly what to do to help her through her journey. They immediately jumped into action and started educating her on the benefits she was entitled to as a Guardsman returning from deployment.

Archaeologist receives DOD environmental award

By Tech. Sgt. James Hodgman | 45TH SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE, Fla. — For 15 years, Tom Penders, the 45th Civil Engineer Squadron cultural resources manager, has worked to preserve the environment and history for the 45th Space Wing.

Penders is responsible for conducting archaeological surveys, historic property surveys and construction monitoring at Patrick SFB, Florida, Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, Malabar Transmitter Annex, Palm Bay, Florida, and the Jonathan Dickinson Missile Tracking Annex near Jupiter, Florida.

The Department of Defense announced in a press release April 22, that Penders, a native of Titusville, Florida, is the 2021 Secretary of Defense Environmental Award winner in the Cultural Resources Management, Individual/ Team category. The award recognizes installations, teams and individuals for outstanding achievement in DOD, Air Force and Space Force environmental programs.

According to the release, Penders’ work was essential to the development of defense and launch programs vital to the 45th SW mission, as well as ensuring that PSFB and CCSFS complied with the National Historic Preservation Act and Archaeological Resources Protection Act. “Penders does a phenomenal

job supporting the 45th Space Wing,” said Mike Blaylock, 45th CES chief of environmental conservation. “He is focused on the mission and his work is extremely valuable.

Most of his job is done behind the scenes, but he works to ensure there are no issues with construction projects on base, he preserves the history of our installations and he has saved the Air Force more than $1 million over the years. He has earned this honor.”

According to the award nomination, from Oct. 1, 2018 to Sept. 30, 2020, Penders

managed 500 cultural resources, including several archaeological sites, launch complexes and eight cemeteries. He also led six archaeological surveys saving the Air Force an estimated $480,000. Additionally, he set up partnerships with the Universities’ of Central and Southern Florida to complete archaeological surveys, excavations and artifact analysis. Those partnerships have saved the Air Force approximately $1.5 million since 2016.

“It is nice to be recognized,” said Penders,

“but I just do my job.”

A job with a significant impact on PSFB, CCSFS and the community.

Through the partnerships Penders has cultivated with the UCF and the USF, he has been able to take advantage of the universities’ 3D scanning capabilities to complete a number of surveys.

Penders said.

The 45th CES cultural management team conducts a variety of surveys each year, including inspections of historical sites such as Space Launch Complex 34 at CCSFS, where the only manned Apollo launch took place at then Cape Canaveral Air Force Station Jan. 27, 1967. The team also conducts assessments of the soil and any artifacts retrieved from archeological survey sites.

Penders said he leads two archaeological excavations a year with the help of students from USF and UCF. “The students assist with retrieving and scanning the artifacts, as well as lab analysis,” Penders said. “They collect, wash and sort every artifact we find.

Over the past two years, this has led to the identification of 350 artifacts.”

Blaylock said some unique items have been found during those archeological digs, including a mercury dime from 1910, animal bones and Native American pottery between 1,000 and 2,000 years old.

The goal is to share those artifacts with the community, Penders said.

“My hope is that with the 3D imagery we obtain from these sites, that we can make that imagery available to the public online,” Penders said. “That way people could tour old launch sites that they may not be able to tour otherwise.”

A panel of 47 judges from federal and state agencies, as well as academia and the private sector evaluated nominations from the DOD components. Out of 27 nominees, the judges selected eight winners. my unit,” said Nay. “Luckily, my leadership was very flexible with meeting me where I needed to be met. They really knew my background, and they knew what opportunities I had and, they never once made my illness a deciding factor for any of those opportunities.”

The biggest struggle for Nay was dealing with insurance and her benefits.

Because she was ill, TRICARE gave her a temporary medical continuation of coverage every 30 days to cover her treatment. Every time the order expired, she was put back into drill status and lost all her benefits until she received another order.

“Because I would continuously be put back into drill status, I had a few delays in treatment,” said Nay. “I’m very grateful that I have healthcare, but it is also a struggle navigating all those systems while already being sick. As Guardsman, we come back from these deployments, and our benefits are very dependent on the status that we are in, which is key to our healthcare.”

Because Nay is not an active Guardsman, the first few weeks she was home from deployment, she had no idea how to navigate a military treatment facility on an installation. When calling to book her very first appointment with her Primary Care Manager, the Airman helping her out over the phone explained that her PCM was booked for quite a few weeks.

Nay was devastated, waiting weeks for an appointment wasn't going to work for her, and the Airman on the phone could sense that she did not have the time to wait. He took an extra step in letting her know that she could see the Women’s Healthcare practitioner if she came in that day, instead of waiting for an appointment.

“I do not know who that Airman is, but I think about him all the time,” said Nay. “Just that one little extra step he took to take care of me, impacted my entire life in such a way I can’t describe. The doctors told me if I waited any longer to get seen, it was highly likely to spread to another area, and I would've been stage 4, which is essentially terminal. What this Airman did by taking that one extra step could’ve changed my entire life.”

Taking that small, extra, step out of his day could have inherently saved Nay’s life, whether that Airman knew it or not. It's the little things, like simply helping others, that could have a profound impact on someone’s life, more than one could ever imagine.

“The one thing I think is the most important in life is to take care of yourself and others,” Nay said. “I am so grateful for everyone that has helped me through my journey. We are all in the military, but at the end of the day, we are all human. [Remember to] do those little things to help others, because you never know the impact you could have on that person’s life.”

Nay’s strength and determination haven't allowed cancer to bring her spirits down, and although treatment is ongoing for Nay, she continues to proudly serve every day.
