JTF-SD earns superior rating in security inspection

By Jennifer Thibault | JOINT TASK FORCE-SPACE DEFENSE PUBLIC AFFAIRS SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Space Command conducted a security inspection April 6-8 and rated its component command, Joint Task ForceSpace Defense, superior in their execution of special access program security protocols.

“This is the highest achievement a program can earn and is even more impressive when you consider it was accomplished under the added complications of COVID work limitations,” said U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Tom James, JTF-SD commander. “[The inspector] recognized the complexity of our operations and the unique security challenges we face every day as we accomplish our critical mission.”

Two inspectors spent three days engaging the JTF-SD security team looking at more than 1,400 accountable items.

“This is my second inspection with this organization but I have been through several of these in other positions and this is a huge achievement,” said Paul Helm, JTF-SD director of the office of command security.

“We are unique here, with the multiple programs, the dynamic JTF-SD operations and the different agencies operating here.”

Leading up to the inspection, James stressed the importance of doing well.

“We can’t operate in our environment if we don’t manage classified material correctly,” James said. “Our partnership is powerful but it is incumbent on us all doing our part to properly handle and manage classified information.”

Helm’s team of 15 conducted multiple self-inspections, including some with disinterested party observers, to be

sure the organization was ready.

Unlike some security teams which are divided by specialty, i.e. personnel security or industrial security, all JTF-SD security team members are mu lt id iscipl i na r y which paid dividends in this inspection as well as during the last year’s COVID prevention measures.

“We had to go to minimum manning but onboarding personnel didn’t slow down,” he said. “Our team developed virtual in-processing, which was a huge hurdle for us, in order Joint Task Force-Space Defense emblem to keep the mission going. I’ve heard some say ‘well I can’t help because COVID,’ but that wasn’t our answer here.”

Those same COVID measures meant many staff we’re also taking on the role of teacher as their children were home schooling.

“It’s just amazing to me what they were able to accomplish,” said Helm.

One month before the inspection, the security team gained a civilian deputy, Charles Shaffer, who spent five years with the inspector general prior to assuming his post here.

“I was blown away by the multidisciplinary approach. I could go to anyone on the team and they had the answers,” Shaffer said. “I’ve never seen a superior rating before and I never gave one.

They’ve set the bar high.”

Shaffer will be charged with maintaining that high bar as Helm transitions to a new position in May. “I am so proud of the team, their cooperation and the way they worked together. I am glad to have been part of it,” Helm said. “Keep building upon this reputation you’ve established, enjoy it but don’t let your guard down.”

JTF-SD is set to be inspected again in approximately 24 months.

Peterson-Schriever Garrison makes light work of heavy snow

By Airman Ryan Prince | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — During heavy snow over the weekend of March 13, 2021, multiple mission essential units were snowed in, or had to work around the snow, at Peterson Air Force Base, Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station and Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado.

According to U.S. Space Force 1st Lt. Timothy Horton, 21st Communications Squadron alpha crew commander at Cheyenne Mountain AFS, some crews had to stay 48 to 72 hours in the mountain to maintain around the clock operations to support no-fail missions.

“Contingencies have been in place for operations here at the mountain in cases of emergency,” Horton said. “We are always prepared to button up and stay in the mountain for an extended period of time.”

Cheyenne Mountain AFS provides cots, sleeping bags and meals, ready to eat when necessary, to support hosted combatant command centers and Department of Defense agencies. These assets are provided to mission partners if they become snowed in during shifts or to mitigate the requirement to travel to Cheyenne Mountain.

The 1st Space Operations Squadron crew members at Schriever AFB had to stay in place due to weather and road conditions as well.

“1st SOPS personnel were on the operations floor in [continuous] support of the mission,” said U.S. Space Force Senior Master Sgt. Richard Justice, 1st SOPS senior enlisted leader.

Food was provided to snowedin personnel by the squadron and previous crews in preparation for the snow.

“The unit spent the week prior to the storm tracking weather updates and ensuring that crews would be prepared for an extended time on the operations floor,” Justice said. “1st SOPS maintains a cache of storm supplies such as MREs, cots, sleeping bags, pillows, blankets and personal supplies to support crews who are conducting the ‘protect and defend’ mission through the storm.”

At Peterson AFB, one critical operation that can be affected by snowfall is keeping the airfield up and running.

“We worked with [the] 21st [Civil Engineer Squadron] heavy shop, who provided the personnel and equipment to clear the snow on the apron,” said U.S. Air Force

Tech Sgt. Phonkamon Gehres, 21st Logistics Readiness Squadron airfield management operations supervisor. “Airfield management conducts pavement friction reading tests, [which] helps pilots to safely land and taxi. We communicate with Colorado Springs Municipal Airport operations [to] synchronize our snow operations. We inspect the apron for any hazards and alert [the] proper agencies weather notifications.”

The Airmen on the airfield did not get stuck during the winter storm, however, they faced their own set of challenges in support of the mission.

“Most airfield management personnel live

off-base,” Gehres said. “Therefore, some have to drive through hazard road conditions [and] get out earlier to ensure [they] get in on time,” Airfield management and the 21st CES heavy shop have an annually reviewed snow plan to ensure the apron is continually mission ready, according to Gehres.

The 21st LRS also have the responsibility of reporting on and forecasting snow fall.

“We supported all parts of the garrison, sending updates to Peterson leadership as well as Schriever and Cheyenne [Mountain],” said U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Julian McAlister, 21st LRS weather office flight chief. “We were fielding a

large amount of phone calls and sending out regular forecast updates.”

According to McAlister, forecasters who had to stay late were able to stay in base lodging to avoid driving at night through the snow storm.

The 21st Force Support Squadron had their hands full during the snow storm as well.

“Overall we supported six agencies, providing 114 meals, 17 MRE cases, 28 cots and 36 lodging rooms,” said U. S. Air Force Capt.

Jamila Edgerson, 21st FSS operations officer.

“Additionally, our child and youth facility opened its doors to support the children of mission essential workers on Monday.”

This year’s theme, “Do Your Part – Protect the Earth, Support the Mission,” highlights the Defense Department’s commitment to help tackle the climate crisis, which senior leaders believe is key to defending the nation.

“Earth Day offers the chance to reflect on what we’re doing to care for the planet,” said Acting Secretary of the Air Force John P. Roth. “The Air and Space Forces, through efforts from climate-friendly building updates to exploring clean energy sources, are committed to President Joe Biden’s and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin’s charge to tackle the climate crisis.”

Preserving Wingman culture

— Being a good Wingman is more than simply showing up to work and checking tasks off a list. It takes initiative, empathy and a willingness to care for fellow Airmen and Guardians to embody the Wingman culture. To recognize and emphasize these ideals, Peterson and Schriever Air Force Bases participated in Wingman Day, April 13.

Wingman Days usually occur twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall.

“The purpose of Wingman Day is to offer Airmen and Guardians an opportunity to take a pause from normal operations, focus on their individual resilience, and connect with others and build the

social support that is critical when we encounter challenges in our lives,” said Jess Schroeder, Peterson AFB community support coordinator.

Chad Littlefield, co-founder and chief experience officer of We and Me Inc., an organization whose mission is to create conversations that matter, was the guest speaker at the last Wingman Day, held August 2020 at Peterson AFB. Following the success of his first facilitation, Littlefield was invited to return again in April for the garrison.

“Our hope is that participants will be able to create more meaningful connections after the session,” said Mary Devitt, Schriever AFB community support coordinator. “Chad is an expert on creat-

ing trust and community within teams, which is what we want for our Airmen and Guardians at all levels.”

Schroeder explained the desired outcome for this event is for Airmen and Guardians to experience a new sense of support from those around them. They should feel refreshed, reinvigorated and motivated to improve their own personal resilience.

After the morning facilitation conducted via Zoom, units were released to conduct their own team building exercises and strengthen relationships within their workforce. Some of the activities PetersonSchriever Garrison units participated in included hiking, axe throwing, go-karting, miniature golf and a zip-line course.

Patrick SFB, Cape Canaveral SFS support mission to ISS

By Tech. Sgt. James Hodgman | 45TH SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS CAPE CANAVERAL SPACE FORCE STATION, Fla. — Just before 6 a.m., Friday, a SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket carried the four astronauts of Dragon Crew-2 from Kennedy Space Center, Florida, into space.

The launch is the third commercial crew human space flight mission in less than a year. The crew, which consists of NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur, Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Akihiko Hoshide, and European Space Agency astronaut Thomas Pesquet, from France, are set to dock with the International Space Station April 24.

More than a dozen organizations from Patrick Space Force Base, Florida, and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station supported the launch including launch weather officers, security forces, rescue forces and mission assurance technicians.

“The 45th Space Wing was proud to support the Crew-2 launch, the third crewed launch in the past year,” said Brig.

Gen. Stephen Purdy, 45th SW commander. “Congratulations to our Guardians, Airmen, NASA and SpaceX on another successful day on the Eastern Range. These historic moments would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our teammates.”

The general also wished safe travels for Kimbrough, McArthur, Hoshide and Pesquet as they head toward the ISS. According to a NASA press release, the astronauts will spend six months on the ISS conducting space walks, science experiments and a variety of maintenance actions. They will also deliver 250 pounds of cargo including new science hardware, as well as experiments such as a university student-led investigation to study possible causes for suppressed immune response in microgravity. They are set to return to Earth in the fall of 2021.

“It has been an incredible year for NASA and our Commercial Crew Program, with three crewed launches to the space station since last May,” said NASA Acting Administrator Steve Jurczyk. “This is another important milestone for NASA, SpaceX, and our international partners at ESA and JAXA, and for the future of scientific research on board the space station.”

The latest human space flight mission brought with it some historic firsts. The launch was the first commercial crew mission to fly two international partners and it will lead to the first commercial crew handover between astronauts on the space station.

Greenland Heritage Week at Thule Air Base

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Far above the Arctic Circle, the small community at Thule Air Base holds an annual festival to celebrate the end of their long, dark winter and the arrival of spring. For over 40 years, the men and women of the 821st Air Base Group have welcomed nearby Greenlanders to “Greenland Heritage Week,” a chance for everyone in Greenland’s far north to get together and share traditions, handicrafts, and meals, March 29 - April 4.

Although storms hit Pituffik on Saturday morning, everyone participated in the Greenlandic craft sale on Sunday which generated over 25,000 kroner in profits to the local villages. But the biggest thrill was seeing the annual dogsled race. Marcus Hansen won, traveling 10 km in 25 minutes. He beat the 16 other hunters and their teams of dogs, including the youngest participant ever at age 11.

This year, 63 Greenlanders made their way to the base at Pituffik, including 17 hunters who traveled over the ice by dogsled to compete in the race.

At 78, the oldest guest was Qaerngaq Nielsen from Savissivik. He’s attended the event almost since the start and is still proud of his record 8 consecutive wins in the dogsled race. How did he do it? By shouting “Nanoq!” (Greenlandic for polar bear) to his dogs to make them run faster. A hunter since childhood, he shot his first seal at 6 and has trained dogs since he was 13 years old. He gave special thanks to Thule AB Commander, Col. David Hanson, for making the event possible this year, highlighting that the children would have great memories of the event for years to come.

OUTDOOR RECREATIONAdventures ROCK CLIMBING, BEGINNER North Cheyenne Cañon is a beautiful natural resource just a short drive away from Peterson. With diverse wildlife and stunning views, the Cañon is a great place to spend a morning rock climbing with our experienced staff. Sign up early, our climbing programs fill up fast!

Cost: Regular Price - $70; R4R - $20. Includes climbing equipment and guided service.

ROCK CLIMBING, INTERMEDIATE Clear Creek Canyon just outside of Golden, CO, pairs beautiful views with incredible rock climbing.

If you have prior rock climbing experience and are looking for something a little more challenging than our beginner program, this is the trip for you!

Cost: Regular Price - $135; R4R - $50. Includes transportation, climbing equipment, and guided service.

Location: Clear Creek Canyon Restrictions: Must be at least 12 years old.

FLY FISHING We are partnering with Angler’s Covey to offer this incredible half-day fly fishing trip. You will head to the river and get professional guided instruction on the basics of fly fishing.

SUNRISE HIKE Looking to start your day off right? Join Outdoor Rec on this quick but classic outing to a local hike to soak in the sun rising over Colorado Springs. A beautiful experience that will jump start your day!

In response to COVID-19, Peterson Outdoor Rec is taking proactive steps to protect the health and wellbeing of our employees, customers, and community.

We are closely monitoring the pandemic as it evolves and are following the recommendations and guidelines of the Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization, Arkansas River Outfitters Association, PAFB Public Health, Fremont County Public Health Department, and government mandated guidelines.

Outdoor Rec is fully operational. Our business hours are Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Our Equipment Rental program is up and running, and every effort is made to fully sanitize each piece

BACKPACKING CLASS Colorado has almost unlimited opportunities for overnight and multi-day backpacking trips. There is something amazing about living in the wilderness with nothing but what you can carry, but if you have never planned a backpacking trip, it can be a daunting task. No worries, our experienced and knowledgeable staff is here to help! We will go over everything you need to know, including route planning resources, what to pack, how to pack, how much food to bring, and more.

Cost: $5/person.

BACKCOUNTRY COOKING CLASS Adventurers should not live on beef jerky alone!

If you want to learn the skills to add variety to your wilderness diet, this is the class for you. We will be cooking a handful of our favorite backcountry staples in this hands-on course that will teach you how to step up your backcountry cooking game, allowing you to whip up hearty, satisfying meals to fuel your next adventure!

Cost: $15.

FIRST AID SKILLS When playing in the outdoors, it is best to be prepared for when things don’t go as planned.

This class will get you some practical hands-on experience with skills such as bandaging wounds, wrapping ankles, and more.

Mr. Louis “Lou” Ramon Lou has been a “space cadet” his entire life, turning his childhood passion for aircraft and science fiction into a lifelong career in the space industry. After earning a bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from Cal Poly University in Pomona, Calif., Lou began a nearly 50-year career with NASA in and around the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

He has been involved in nearly every U.S. human spaceflight program including Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Space Shuttle, the International Space Station, and more. Among the many highlights for him was working as a part of Apollo 11 alongside astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Lou continues to use his passion for space and education as a volunteer at the Space Foundation Discovery Center. He receives a great deal of fulfillment from volunteering in the Discovery Center and encourages anyone who is interested in space to volunteer.

Deployment/Remote Child Care Support will provide additional child care hours for deployments/remote assignments.

Families are authorized 16 hours for pre-deployment, 16 hours each month of the deployment/remote assignment, and 16 hours post-deployment.

• AF FCC Deployment Child Care Support may be used once the member has orders and ends 60 days upon return from the deployment. AF FCC Remote Assignment Child Care may be used each month that the member is on remote assignment.

• Care is dependent on the availability of funding and availability of FCC providers.

SUBSIDY PROGRAM: Allows parents to use an AF FCC child care program for the same cost as the Child Development Center (CDC) or School Age Programs (SAP).

CHILD CARE FOR PCS: Cares for children while parents prepare for PCS move. Covers 20 hours of care per child at both departing and new base. Must be used within 60 days of departure or arrival.

ANG/AFR HOME COMMUNITY CARE: Allows ANG/ AFR parents to use licensed and affi liated EDC homes during drill weekends.

• Care is dependent on the availability of funding and availability of FCC providers.

RESPITE CARE: EFMP Respite care program is designed to assist Air Force families with short- term specialized child care (to help reduce the stress associated with caring for an exceptional family member) DAF/A1SOC AND AFSVC/SVPY are launching an AF Family Child Care Initiative to increase the number of quality, available, and affordable child care spaces with an emphasis on recruitment and retention of FCC providers who provide full time child care. This will be implemented until 30 September 2021.

INCENTIVE 1 - If a provider enrolls any child(ren) from the active CDC Unmet Need or any children who were supplanted from child care and the provider is providing full time care for these children, the provider will receive a

onetime payment of $200 per child. Note: if the child(ren) do not remain enrolled for at least 3 months, the $200 payment is subject to repayment.

• INCENTIVE 2 - Any providers who receive their certification or annual renewal of their certification during this test phase, will receive a onetime payment of $300. Note: if the provider does not remain certified for at least 6 months, the $300 payment is subject to repayment.

FITNESS CENTER – 719-556-4462 AIR FORCE MARATHON • It will be held September 16-19, 2021, at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Each MAJCOM and USSF may field one full marathon team and one half-marathon team to participate in the challenge.

• MAJCOM Teams are open to all Active Duty Airmen within their respective command. The USSF Team is open to all Active Duty Space Force Guardians and also Airmen assigned to USSF installations, including the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).

THE 2021 MILEAGE CHALLENGE • You’d better get started. It’s going to take most of the year for you to cover 2,021 miles, especially if you do the 2021 Mileage Challenge solo! You can RUN, WALK and/or BIKE, and you have until December 31, 2021 to complete it. Participation is FREE! • SOLO CHALLENGER: You must complete ALL the miles entirely on your own between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

• TRACKING: For tracking your distance, use Nike Run app.

Each participant must register in order to receive their prize.

by General Curtis E LeMay back in 1951. Known today officially as the Rocky Mountain USAF Flight Training Center, the Aero Club is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Happy Anniversary!

PRIVATE PILOT GROUND SCHOOL

The Rocky Mountain USAF Flight Training Center (aka Aero Club) offers a Private Pilot Ground School about every eight to nine weeks. Cost for the Ground School is $650.

While the course is a Jeppesen online course, you will meet with the instructor about every other week from 6-8 p.m. to go over course materials and have a chance to ask questions. Completion of this course prepares you to take the FAA Written Exam with the endorsement from the instructor and satisfies the FAA minimum requirement for the Ground School portion.

After you pass your FAA Written Exam, you will have two years to complete the flying portion and pass the Checkride with an FAA DPE for your Private Pilot License requirements.

Parents probably won’t have to coax their kids to attend a summer camp. We expect plenty of enthusiasm for our summer camps. Our suggestion: If your child finds a camp they are excited about attending, sign them up as soon as you can, before attendance gets maxed out.

WEEK 2 – SPORTS CAMP: KARATE, WELLNESS, SPORTS VENUES • Introduction to Karate basics in a real Dojo, team building games and exercises. Visit venues that motivate youth to increase youth sports performance and knowledge.

WEEK 4: SPORTS CAMP: ARCHERY • Archery is one of the fastest growing and safest sports.

Learn range safety and fundamental archery skills, work with knowledgeable coaches, and do nothing but learn about bows, arrows and targets. Cost is $100.

WEEK 5: ART, COLOR & CREATIVITY • Camp Description: Exploring the world of art using different painting techniques, art genres and styles.

WEEK 6: H2O ADVENTURE • Camp Description: This week is all things water! We hope this comes as a relief as we begin the dog days of summer.

WEEK 7: OUTDOOR SPORTS (CAMPING) • Camp Description This week youth will be experience to the great outdoors. Monday and Tuesday youth will learn outdoor skills and then Wednesday through Friday we will be camping in the Pikes Peak area.

WEEK 7: SPORTS CAMP: MULTI SPORTS CAMP • Learn a different sport each day. These sports include Disc Golf, Flag Football, Putt Putt Golf and Basketball.

The goal of this Sports Camp is to expand and assist youth’s (ages 9 to 18) understanding of different sports and provide team building activities. A hands-on learning experience and pure fun will be had by all. Cost is $100.

WEEK 8: ANIMAL PLANET • Camp Description: Youth and staff will explore animals and micro-organisms in many ecosystems around the world.

WEEK 8: SPORTS CAMP: AIR RIFLE • This camp will teach the fundamentals of Air Rifle Safety, proper handling and shooting of the rifle at targets. Cost is $100.

WEEK 9: OUTDOOR REC ADVENTURE • Camp Description: There is a great big world out there, and this week we plan on exploring some of the best parts of it. During the Outdoor Adventure week youth will be learning outdoor adventure skills through different activities such as hiking, rock climbing, biking, stand-up paddle boarding, and rafting.

WEEK 10: HARRY POTTER/ THEME PARK • Camp Description: Here we GOOOOOOOOOO! This week we are mixing the best of both Harry Potter and Theme Park. Join us for some wizarding fun.

Space Delta 4 conducts first-of-its-kind exercise

BUCKLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Delta 4 completed the firstof-its-kind exercise this month that will change the future of Space Domain Awareness.

The exercise, known as Strategic Exercise (STRATEX) 1, was the first exercise using non-traditional missile warning sensors and was conducted at Buckley AFB and Beale AFB from March 22-26, 2021.

Teams from across Space Operations Command, including the 2nd Space Warning Squadron (2 SWS), 7th Space Warning Squadron (7 SWS), Joint Overhead Persistent Infrared Center (JOPC), and 18th Space Control Squadron (18 SPCS), constructed a ‘proof-of-concept’ intended to significantly increase the United States’ ability to find, fix, and track anti-satellite threats from launch through engagement. Their ultimate objective was to reduce command and control timelines for the successful defeat of the threat by improving indications and warnings.

“In a day-to-day operation, missile warning sensors are not traditionally used for Space Domain Awareness, but this proof-of-concept exercise shows we can support the SDA mission as well,” said Capt. Angelo Centeno, the 2nd Space Warning Squadron weapons and tactics flight commander.

Competitors have demonstrated capabilities in recent years, including successful direct ascent anti-satellite tests. Anti-satellite weapons present risks to global free access to space and vital resources for the global community, this includes weather, communications. This event exercised new methodologies for integrating non-traditional support to counter anti-satellite threats.

“Things happen fast in space and the space domain is the largest warfighting domain in existence,” said 1st Lt. David Trusty, chief of weapons and tactics for 7 SWS. “The exercise intended to nail down procedures for integrated planning and employment to ensure nothing occurs in the space domain beyond the watchful eye of the United States Space Force.”

As the missile-warning Delta, DEL 4 Airmen and Guardians were able to challenge themselves while collaborating with their mission partners to support the foundation for space operations and maintain the ultimate high ground. They will continue to make improvements to their processes based on the outcome of this exercise and execute a second iteration later this year.

“These exercises are so important for the Space Force because they are pushing the envelope on being prepared for tomorrow’s fight. It also tests the operators’ abilities to work outside of the bounds of their unit and integrate with peers across the Space Force,” said Centeno.

This is just another example of how DEL 4’s motto, “Videmus Mundum” proves true: “We See the World.”
