SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron hosted a Lieutenant Professional Enhancement Seminar at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, March 9-11. This new course provides junior officers and civilians the opportunity to learn about leadership traits and qualities.

“This course was established [with] the goal of preparing junior officers for the challenges of a successful Air Force career,” said Mr. James Driscoll, 50th FSS force development flight chief.

Joining Schriever AFB junior officers to take advantage of the first offering of the course, were officials from the El Paso County Sheriff Office. “[The course is] meant for first and second lieutenants, but is also open to early [Department of Defense] civilian supervisors,” said Master Sgt. Kathryn North, the 50th FSS career assistance advisor. “With this new class specifically, we’ve opened it up to the community for some leaders within the sheriff’s office.”

The Colorado Springs military installations and local law enforcement have strong ties to each other that go back decades. The opportunity to offer leadership and management principles while sharing mentoring experiences is one of many stepping stones for a stronger relationship.

“Colorado Springs has such an incredibly large military community, courses like this one are beneficial for both civilians and military because it helps gain better knowledge of others and strengthens connections,” said North.

With the relationship that 50th FSS has built between Schriever AFB and the local law enforcement, they were able to get two participants from the El Paso County Sheriff Office, Sergeant Kristyn Nordeman, Patrol Division school resource officer and Deputy Josie Haag, Special Operations Division school resource officer.

“We don’t have anything like ALS [Airmen Leadership School], NCO [noncommissioned officer] Academy, Senior NCO Academy, or anything along those lines. This course is the closest to those that we can attend,” said Haag. “There may be something that we can learn from you guys, that’s going to help us to help the community.”

The sheriff’s office runs a lot like the military when it comes to how they do things. The lessons learned from this course, can be brought back and implemented with their troops to be used daily.

“I learned a lot about the military life, now when I get a call and end up interacting with military personnel I have a better understanding of what they’re going through,” said Nordeman. “As a law enforcement official working within Colorado Springs, we are always running into military personnel.

The lessons will bring us closer together.”

The Lieutenant Professional Enhancement Seminar takes place over two and a half days, with each class being eight hours a day and will be offered twice each year. Due to COVID-19 precautions to ensure student safety, the course was limited to 10 attendees.

Air Force recruiting breaks Guinness World Records title with virtual pastime during pandemic

By Chrissy Cuttita | AIR FORCE RECRUITING SERVICE PUBLIC AFFAIRS JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) — When the world shut down last year and people shut themselves in during the COVID-19 pandemic, Airmen charged with inspiring and engaging the next generation discovered new ways to showcase America’s air power and dominate pixel space. To their surprise, their recruiting efforts earned the Air Force a Guinness World Records title for the largest online jigsaw puzzle.

“This record-breaking accomplishment of our Air Force recruiting team is just another example of how our innovative Airmen adapt and overcome,” said Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, Air Force Recruiting Service commander. “I couldn’t be more proud of how our team rapidly developed the Million Piece Mission during a time when virtual interaction was how we connected. It is simply fantastic. Setting world records and breaking barriers is what Aiming High is all about."

In June 2020, the Million Piece Mission brought an interactive, billion-pixel image of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force to couches everywhere. Air Force Recruiting Service developed the interactive puzzle made up of 1.2 million pieces. More than 31,000 players around the world worked together to solve the jigsaw and they accomplished the mission in 18 days, 16 hours and 55 minutes.

During the pandemic, recruiters are dependent on virtual experiences for outreach events especially where recruiting offices are closed or operating in a minimal, in-person capacity and mobile tours are on hold.

“Air Force Recruiting Service’s primary mission is to engage with the American public, highlighting the career opportunities and benefits of serving in the Air Force,” said Maj. Jason Wyche, chief of the National Events Branch at AFRS, Joint Base San AntonioRandolph. “The ‘Million Piece Mission’ enabled us to do that in a fun and unique way, while also allowing Americans to learn about the Air Force’s history through exploring the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force from the comfort of their homes.”

Million Piece Mission is free to play and accessed on AirForcePuzzle.com by desktop and mobile devices.

Austin-based full-service creative agency GSD&M – the Air Force’s creative partner for 20 years – envisioned this concept, along with development partner, Active Theory.

Each visitor to the jigsaw’s online location averaged 12 minutes on the site and two-thirds of them fit the

U.S. Air Force, in partnership with full-service creative agency, GSD&M, launches the largest virtual multiplayer puzzle for the entire world to solve together.

“Million Piece Mission” was created with a 1.03 gigapixel image of the fourth building of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, taken shortly after the building’s opening in 2016 by photographer John Opie. optimal 18- to 34-year old, problem-solving demographic that the Air Force looks for in potential recruits.

According to GSD&M, a 97.4% positive rating indicates people enjoyed their experience with Air Force history.

Two Air Force missions were pieced together to accomplish the Guinness World Records feat.

“The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Recruiting Service have similar missions to inspire youth toward careers in the U.S. Air Force,” said David Tillotson, museum director. “So it’s a perfect fit

for the world’s largest military aviation museum to be featured on the world’s largest virtual puzzle.”

The completed full image shows a collection of aircraft on display at the museum’s fourth building that was captured after the building’s opening in 2016 by photographer John Opie. As a puzzle, the image contains 3,000 tiles and a total of 1.2 million pieces.

As the world slowly finds a safer way to fit in COVID19’s “new normal,” the Air Force plans to continue virtual recruiting efforts.

Over the past year, many of us have had to learn new ways of working, caring for our families and trying to remain connected with others.

The COVID-19 pandemic may make you feel like you’re just waiting - life on hold - feeling frustrated that there’s no end in sight. Pandemic fatigue is a very real feeling of exhaustion as a result of COVID-19’s impact on our lives - from financial stress to loneliness, to the fears of getting sick. All of these play into the fatigue many of us are feeling and how we are reacting as a result.

Continual exposure to this unrelenting stress can cause us to burnout.

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands.

The negative effects of burnout can zap the joy out of your career, friendships, and family interactions.

Much worse than ordinary fatigue, burnout makes it challenging for people to cope with stress and handle day-to-day responsibilities. People who are struggling with burnout typically experience one or more of the following symptoms: • Feeling physically, emotionally, and mentally depleted • Irritability • Difficulty with concentration • General ‘brain fog’ • Loss of motivation

Air Force Surgeon General briefs Senate on COVID-19 response Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Lt. Gen. Dorothy Hogg, the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force Surgeon General, testified Tuesday, April 20, at a hearing on the Defense Health Program before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.

Hogg’s testimony centered on the ways medical Airmen have played integral roles in the COVID-19 response. She highlighted how the Air Force Medical Service’s evolving aeromedical evacuation platforms rapidly adjusted amid the pandemic.

“We took our aeromedical evacuation capability into new territory when we were tasked to transport COVID-19 patients,” said Hogg. “Early in the pandemic, the rapid rise in cases drove the need to move more patients at once while

mitigating the spread of COVID-19 to our aircrew members. We partnered with teams across the Department of Defense and civilian industry to develop a new infectious disease transport system called the Negatively Pressurized Conex.”

As of April 19, the Air Force Medical Service has completed 96 aeromedical evacuation missions and transported 366 COVID-19 patients. Air Force medics have also embedded into overrun civilian hospitals, providing additional support in COVID-19 epicenters. To help with COVID-19 vaccine administration, 1,000 Air Force medics have been deployed to 11 vaccination sites around the country.

She expressed the AFMS’s continued support of the successful transition of military treatment facili-

ties to the Defense Health Agency, and highlighted the positive impact of the Air Force Medical Reform Model on force readiness.

Hogg concluded her oral statement, emphasizing the dedication of Air Force medics and the need to be responsive to future readiness requirements.

“This pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, but it also provided opportunities to accelerate change or lose, to become more agile, resilient and capable to face the unknown,” said Hogg. “This is what we train for. We remain ready for this fight. This mentality must remain in focus as we evolve to face the next major threat.”

This is Hogg’s final time testifying before this Subcommittee as she will be retiring after 37 years of active duty service.

COVID testing remains key part of Vandenberg readiness

By Michael Peterson | 30TH SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Although vaccination appointments for COVID-19 are being provided to an expanding population at Vandenberg AFB through Operation Fight Back, the 30th Medical Group also remains committed to providing continued COVID testing and contact tracing to maximize base readiness.

“Testing continues to be an important strategy for combating this pandemic,” said Major Aubrey Reid, 30th MDG health care integrator. “It is important to contact the 30th Medical Group at 805-606-CARE when you feel ill or as directed by current guidance for COVID testing.”

Risk factors for increasing the spread of COVID still linger, with schools starting to open up, recent spring break travel, and the upcoming PCS season for many Airmen and Guardians. Even amidst an increasing population of vaccinated individuals, testing remains a necessary piece in the fight against COVID. “Some unique situations can still drive testing,” said Reid. “Schools may require a negative test for children prior to returning to school or ask that they stay home for 14 days based on symptoms. Traveling may also drive certain types of tests at different intervals, so

it’s important to research what type of testing may be needed and call the 30th Medical Group to help get scheduled.”

The process is more efficient than ever, as the 30th MDG recently expanded testing capabilities with a new Cepheid testing machine, which can simultaneously test for COVID-19, Flu, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus.

According to Staff Sgt. Cody Emery, 30th MDG medical lab technician, the new system can process four times as many test samples at once, while also reducing the turnaround times for test results by about a third.

“The quicker turnaround helps speed up testing and contact tracing on base,” said Emery. “This will in turn inform our leadership and public health in their decision-making process to keep the base population safe and minimize the spread of COVID.” The 30th MDG is able to offer testing for COVID Monday through Friday, by appointment only, through their drive-thru testing clinic.

“Through immunization, testing and contact tracing, we have the tools to help keep our base safe.” said Reid.

“We can offer COVID results within 24 to 48 hours using our in-house testing capabilities, and our new MHS Genesis electronic health system allows patients

U.S. Air Force senior leadership from the Peterson-Schriever Garrison share their work experiences as part of a women’s inclusion panel at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, April 13, 2021. The senior leaders shared challenges that they have faced and overcome, as well as their positive experiences and the growth they have seen in the Air Force as it relates to the inclusion of women in predominately male career fields.

Terrance McWilliams fell in love with Colorado Springs while stationed at Fort Carson in 1996. He knew it was the place he wanted to call home when he retired — and he made it so in 2007.

Following his military retirement, he joined El Pomar Foundation to oversee military and veteran services, and he also serves on several prominent state and community boards, including with Mt. Carmel Veteran Services Center. McWilliams will discuss how his core values have shaped his career and will share his personal observations on how the community addresses issues surrounding race.
