Thule AB hosts annual Armed Forces Day

North gate changes Since April 9, 2018, the north gate hours at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, have changed. The new hours went into effect after a review of the installation security and entry procedures was completed. Areas for improvement were identified and are currently being addressed. See page 5 for more information.

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — Thule Air Base, Greenland, hosted Armed Forces Day activities, March 30-April 1, 2018, an annual tradition between the United States, Denmark, Greenland and Canada. The weekend's highlight was the dog sled team race where local hunters competed for fastest sled honors. This year's winner completed a six-mile trek over the sea ice in just over 30 minutes. "It was a once in a lifetime event," said Master Sgt. Herman Brown, 821st Support Squadron.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Space Wing at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, has seven missile warning radars located strategically around the world that are constantly looking for ballistic missiles inbound to the North American continent. Their mission is to execute combined global capabilities, to defend the homeland, and enable space combat operations. The Strategic Warning and Surveillance Systems Division, or Sentinels, at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, provides maintenance for the radars to help the 21st SW by developing and sustaining missile warning, missile defense, space situational awareness, and command and control capabilities as promised to the warfighter, all while being effective stewards of resources. “We continue to team with the 21st SW and look for ways that we can help them improve their operations,” said Col. Todd Wiest, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Senior Materiel Leader for the SW&SS division. “Our main focus now is taking the long view by being innovative in providing See Innovation page 9

THULE AIR BASE, Greenland — March 30-April 1, 2018 is when Thule Air Base, Greenland, hosted Armed Forces Day activities, an annual tradition between the United States, Denmark, Greenland and Canada. At this event, more than 60 Greenlanders from local communities visited Thule AB. Some took a dog sled team for a three-day trip across the Greenlandic Ice Cap through -40 degree Fahrenheit windchills to the base.

FYLINGDALES AIR FORCE STATION, England — A Ballistic Missile Early Warning System sits at Fylingdales Air Force Station, England. The radar is capable of detecting ballistic missile attacks and conducting general space surveillance and satellite tracking.
