Brown, Raymond attend Survivor Advocacy roundtable

ARLINGTON, Va (AFNS) — Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., and Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. Raymond displayed their support to the families of fallen or wounded service members during an annual Survivor Advocacy roundtable, March 24. The event was designed as an opportunity for survivors to discuss support services, their benefits and provide unfiltered feedback or concerns to senior leaders. “I’ve been a firm believer that we have to take care of our Airmen and our families,” Brown said. “Although you've lost a member of our force, you’re still a part of our family and I think that's very important. We understand, no matter whether an individual's been injured or paid the ultimate price, we want to support you.” The group acknowledged the Department of the Air Force has made progress, but also discussed additional improvements that will benefit survivor families. “I'm committed to powering your ideas, to listening to your concerns and discussing your observations,” Raymond said. “I believe the power of the Department of the Air Force, both the Air Force and the Space Force, exists in Airmen and Guardians and their families. Your open and honest feedback will help improve lives, help improve the Department of Defense and help make us better services, and I can't thank you each enough for being here, for sharing your thoughts.” The survivors recommended several changes for current programs, including asking the services to not categorize survivors based on cause of death. Samantha Lewis, widow of the late Staff Sgt. Jordan Lewis, a CV-22 flight engineer in the 20th Special Operations Wing at Cannon Air Force Base, New Mexico, who died during a training accident in 2015, called it a form of exclusion. “This Air Force is all about being more inclusive,” she said. “All of the sudden, I’m just not allowed to participate in things because my husband’s death wasn’t as valuable as somebody else who died in combat.” The families also felt that the role of casualty assistant officer should become a career field. They highlighted people who were passionate about the job and willing to help, but were limited in their scope. “I think it’s an amazing opportunity for families to have a single point of contact on base who knows your specific story, or about you as a human being,” Lewis said. “It should be a single person, not an additional duty shared among people at the Airmen and Family Readiness Center.” Lt. Col. N’Keiba Estelle agreed, explaining that the program manager helping her had known her specific situation and what to ask for updates on, despite it being just one of several additional duties. “I would like to see some changes with the training from a leadership perspective, just educating commanders on the importance of what the Gold Star Family program means,” said Estelle, commander of the 6th Mission Support Group at MacDill AFB, Florida, and widow of the late Maj. Raymond Estelle, who died in 2011 after 19 years of service. “There appears to be no standardized training to prepare the program managers. They are just kind of told ‘hey, do this’ and ‘figure it out’.” The families requested survivors be granted emergency access to child care and the process to obtain investigation reports be simplified. They also suggested an increase in the reimbursement rate for counseling and therapy, and to extend the suicide prevention and response program services to siblings of the fallen. Additional feedback requested for long-term support resources, increased mental health care options, for the service member’s unit to maintain a connection with families, to extend medical benefits for surviving children to 26 and to remove the higher education requirement. After listening to the stories and concerns of surviving family members, Brown collected the feedback and annotated items in which the Air Force can begin improving on, but also voiced that some suggestions require legislation from Congress, and recommended the survivors continue engagement with their representatives. Raymond agreed, saying he shared Brown’s interest in helping. “You have two service chiefs and two services’ spouses who will raise our voices and be supportive,” he said. “Please don't be bashful, please don't wait for the next meeting if there's something you think needs to be addressed. Speak up, and we'll do everything we can to be supportive and helpful.” Brown also honored the survivors by officiating Staff Sgt. David Rhoton’s virtual reenlistment ceremony. Rhoton, assigned to the 1st Combat Camera Squadron at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, is a survivor of the late 2nd Lt. Christopher Rhoton, who died in 2019 while assigned to the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw AFB, South Carolina.

TAMPA, Fla. — U.S. Air Force Captain Stephanie McIlwraith promised herself she would never return to Florida after her mother’s funeral in August of 2020. Earlier that year, just as the nation began to implement COVID-19 restrictions, McIlwraith’s mother was diagnosed with cancer. “Unfortunately, I allowed my fear of getting her sick stop me from making the trip to see her before [her] passing,” said McIlwraith. “I left Florida in August after my mom’s funeral, and I vowed I was never coming back here.” Nearly six months later, McIlwraith is currently deployed from her home station at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado to the state-led, federally supported community vaccination center here in Tampa, Florida. “I was actually very upset when I found out we were coming here,” said McIlwraith, a clinical nurse who grew up nearby in Clearwater, Florida. “However, it has been a very rewarding experience.” For McIlwraith, being deployed to help fight the virus that prevented her from seeing her mom one last time is only part of the reward. She also gets to help keep her other family members healthy and safe. Her extended family still lives in the area, and qualify for the COVID-19 vaccine, so McIlwraith was able to personally vaccinate her grandmother and aunt at the center.

“For my family, trying to get an appointment and not knowing how to get transportation was an issue,” said McIlwraith. “So, for them to come here and get the one shot, that was the easy option for them.” U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Linzie Avalos, an aerospace medic also deployed from Peterson AFB, says the experience here is nothing like she imagined. The 26-year-old is originally from Phoenix and studied criminal justice in college. “I thought I could come in as a paralegal, but they didn’t need me for that,” said Avalos. “But [being a medic] was an option so, here I am. This is my first deployment, and I didn’t know what to expect, but it’s been extremely rewarding to be able to serve the community like this.” Unlike Avalos, this isn’t U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jerrica Wild’s first deployment as a medic. She says she’s deployed several times overseas, including Afghanistan, but this type of deployment is a first for her. “Whether deployed or at home station, I’m used to working in a hospital environment caring for other service members,” said Wild, also deployed from Peterson AFB. “To be able to help a community in need like this is something I can’t explain. “

Temporary lodging facility renovations completed

By Airman 1st Class Brooke Wise | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The newly renovated temporary lodging facility on Peterson Air Force Base reopened on March 26, 2021. Following the opening ceremony, the west side of Building 1026 was open for visitors to view the new rooms. Reservations are now available by calling 719-556-7851. Building 1026 was originally built in 1968 with the purpose of housing military personnel and Department of Defense civilian employees who were temporarily assigned to Peterson Field and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, their respective names at the time. “Renovations on the TLF began back in 2016 and cost a total of $1.4 million,” explained Sean Dooley, 21st Force Support Squadron lodging general manager. “Originally the project began as a replacement of the TLF soffit panels, typically installed on the roof overhang of a building to protect the structure from animals and weather. However, once lead paint was discovered on the old panels, other issues began to present a larger challenge.” Issues corrected in the renovation process include corroded steel, a deteriorated concrete deck, significant plumbing leaks and outdated electrical panels. The updated facility can support more than 13,000 guests. Military and DoD civilians on temporary duty orders are priority one guests. Active duty members, DoD retirees and DoD civilians with a status other than TDY are considered priority two (space available). Space available guests may make reservations up to 120 days in advance depending on occupancy levels. The starting cost of visiting quarters range from $89 to $129 per night. Business suites begin at $98 per night and large business suites begin at $99 per night. Reopening the TLF will save $327,000 a year in living expenses versus off-base arrangements.

Kayla Roberts, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron fire inspector, was recognized as the 2020 GEICO Military Service Award recipient in the category of fire and safety for her exceptional service and contributions, Feb. 19, 2021. The GEICO Military Service Awards Program highlights and pays tribute to the many contributions of our nation's military enlisted members. In support of the GEICO Philanthropic Foundation, the awards program helps spotlight the valuable and lasting contributions that enlisted members of the armed services make within their communities. In February, U.S. Air and Space Force leadership used virtual technology to surprise Roberts, with a Zoom call from leaders including Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force JoAnne Bass and Chief Master Sgt. of the Space Force Roger Towberman, to congratulate her. “The Zoom call definitely caught me off guard,” said Roberts. “Speaking with them was incredible. Chief Bass asked me questions like, ‘What’s the hardest thing about being a parent?’ It was cool to see that she cares about my family life, in addition to wanting to recognize me.” Roberts worked tirelessly to complete 139 annual building inspections despite a 60% depletion in office staffing. Due to her work ethic, there was a correction in 85 fire safety deficiencies directly improving the work environment and safety for 9,000 total force members. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. assistant chief of accreditation and compliance, and Robert’s supervisor, says Roberts is one of the most hardworking and genuine firefighters she has worked alongside. “She puts her heart into everything she touches and the outcome of her work shows that,” said Beck. “It is so great to work with someone who takes their work seriously and gives 110%, but is also easy going and makes work fun. She’s always wanting to learn more and receive more training to better understand all aspects of her job. Her drive is truly inspirational.” Roberts said the honor of the award resonates with her role as a woman in the military and in the fire service. “Being given the chance to do fire prevention, which is a competitive position to obtain, and then finding out that I won this award feels like a huge accomplishment,” said Roberts. “It’s not easy to stand out and feel confident when you are working as a female in the fire department. Roberts said that while she is proud of earning the award, she didn’t earn it by herself. “I feel like [the award] was won by my fire prevention team,” said Roberts. “It started with my leadership giving me the opportunity to work in fire prevention and the team I worked with having the confidence in me to do my job, grow and push me, allowing me to grow.” As one of the award recipients, Roberts will attend a formal recognition ceremony in Washington D.C.

Defense Department officials have said the department will be ready to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to all eligible beneficiaries by May 1, in keeping with a White House announcement that on that date, all Americans will be able to get vaccinated if they want to. "We are committed to contributing to the president achieving his goal of 200 million shots in 100 days," said Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs Dr. Terry Adirim during a briefing today at the Pentagon. Army Lt. Gen. Ronald J. Place, director of the Defense Health Agency said that depending on the rate at which the DOD can get vaccines, and the uptake rate - that's the number of personnel who step forward to get vaccinated - it's possible that by early summer, every person in the DOD could be vaccinated. "Based on the projections that we have, both supply side and vaccination side, we do fully expect to be open to all ... of our DOD eligible populations on or before the first of May," Place said. "At current uptake rates for those who want to get it, we think by the middle of July or so ... the department will be vaccinated." Place said right now that the military health system is administering COVID vaccine at 343 sites around the world. Also, he said, there are almost 3,000 military personnel providing vaccination support to FEMA-led community vaccination sites around the country. Within the department, Place said, more than 600,000 service members from all three components have gotten at least their first COVID-19 vaccine. "I want to use this opportunity to thank every service member who has gotten vaccinated," said Adirim. "They are not only protecting themselves but they're also contributing to the safety of their teammates, their families and their communities." Right now, there are three COVID-19 vaccines available. Those include vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, both of which have cold-storage requirements, and both of which require two injections. The Johnson and Johnson vaccine requires only a single shot, and has no cold-storage requirement. All three vaccines are effective, Place said, but the single-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine has been beneficial for use in austere environments. "Every single one of these vaccines are shown through rigorous clinical trials to be safe and effective," he said. "The ... unique advantages to this third vaccine is first it doesn't require that cold chain requirement and second only requires one dose, all of which make its efficacy ... the actual effectiveness at the operational force to be greater. So we think this is a better vaccine for the circumstances in those austere environments." Adirim said she hopes that more service members will step forward to take whatever COVID-19 vaccine is eventually offered to them because doing so is the key to getting the nation back on track. "Vaccination is one critical part of getting our country back to normal, along with continued testing and adherence to public health measures like masking and social distancing," Adirim said. "We just can't let up at this point. Our DOD personnel have done a phenomenal job. I'm very proud of all of them. We've administered more than 1.8 million shots within DOD and more than 5 million shots have gone into arms by military service members in support of the FEMA mission."

Nearly 140 Airmen are deployed to Tampa to support the whole-of-government COVID-19 pandemic response. U.S. Army North, U.S. Northern Command's Joint Force Land Component Command, has overseen the Department of Defense's COVID-19 response operation in support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Health and Human Services since March 2020. Approximately 2,900 military medical and support personnel from the U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Forces are currently working, or will soon work, in 11 states and one territory as part of the federal vaccine response to the pandemic. To date, these military personnel have administered approximately 700,000 vaccines. U.S. Northern Command, through U.S. Army North, remains committed to providing continued, flexible Department of Defense support to the Federal Emergency Management Agency as part of the whole-of-government response to COVID-19.
