More options to get COVID-19 vaccine

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Are you and your family looking to get a COVID-19 vaccine near you? If so, you’ll soon have more options for where you can go to get it. As part of the ongoing response to COVID-19, the federal government has launched the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program for COVID-19 Vaccination. This new program is a collaboration between the federal government, states, territories, and 21 national pharmacies and independent pharmacy networks to increase access to the COVID-19 vaccine in the U.S. “Vaccination is a critical step in protecting your health and slowing the spread of COVID-19,” said Colonel Markus Gmehlin, acting chief of the Pharmacy Operations Division at the Defense Health Agency. “This program will provide TRICARE beneficiaries with more opportunities to get vaccinated at a location near them.” Here are some details about distribution and how you can get the vaccine with your TRICARE benefit.

How does the program work? The Federal Retail Pharmacy Program will supply COVID-19 vaccines to retail pharmacies in phases. As part of the initial phase, 1 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine will be sent to a select group of pharmacies. These pharmacies will then administer vaccinations to those who are eligible. Some pharmacies have already begun offering a limited amount of the vaccine through this program. Other pharmacies are set to begin offering doses soon. As stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “As vaccine supply increases, more retail locations will be added.”

Will my local pharmacy offer the COVID-19 vaccine?

Pharmacies that are part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program may vary by state and territory. Pharmacies participating in the program may include TRICARE network pharmacies and non-network pharmacies. You can find a list of pharmacies that are currently participating in your area on the CDC website.

How can I get the vaccine with my TRICARE benefit?

The availability of the vaccine may vary by location. If you’re a TRICARE beneficiary, you’ll eventually be able to get the COVID-19 vaccine at: • Your local military hospital or clinic

Planning to get the vaccine at a non-network pharmacy? There’s no cost for the COVID-19 vaccine itself. Keep in mind, TRICARE doesn’t cover other vaccines and most prescription drugs at non-network pharmacies. Remember, there may be a cost based on your health plan for an office visit with a provider, or if you need follow-on care. If you have questions, you can contact your TRICARE contractor. tal or clinic? If you’re eligible for TRICARE, you can get the COVID-19 vaccine at any military hospital or clinic that offers it. This is true even if you don’t get your routine care there. Phase 1A of the Department of Defense COVID-19 vaccination plan is currently underway at many military hospitals, clinics, and DoD installations. This phase includes vaccinating health care workers, first responders, and residents of Armed Forces Retirement Homes. Keep in mind, some military hospitals and clinics may be in different phases of the vaccination plan. So, make sure you check first to see if the vaccine is available at your location. TRICARE is committed to supporting you and your health. Stay up to date on vaccine guidance through the TRICARE and Military Health System websites. You can also check with your local health department and talk to your health care provider about when you may qualify to receive the vaccine as well as where you can go to get vaccinated. ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Acting Secretary of the Air Force John P. Roth, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., and Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. Raymond directed the Department of the Air Force Inspector General to conduct an additional independent review of racial, gender and ethnic disparity in the Department of the Air Force. The review follows the department’s 2020 Racial Disparity Review released in Dec. 2020 and expands its focus into three additional racial categories (Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander), gender, and one additional ethnic category (Hispanic/Latinx). “The IG team has already begun to gather information contained in a wide array of previous reports, studies and various databases across the Department of the Air Force,” Roth said. “Although the data is helpful, the most important information will come directly from our Airmen and Guardians.” "We learned a lot from the Department of the Air Force’s

initial disparity review and we know we'll learn much more from this second review as well," Roth said. In directing the IG review, the senior leaders emphasized the need for further analysis, stating that “Ensuring fair and equitable discipline and development for all our Airmen and Guardians is critical. We are committed to promoting an environment free from personal, social and institutional barriers that might prevent our members from rising to their highest potential. Diversity makes us a stronger and more capable force.” Findings of the follow-up review will be released in conjunction with the results of a 6-month assessment of actions taken in response to the initial racial disparity review. In the coming days, enlisted, civilian and officer Airmen and Guardians across the services will receive an anonymous email survey from the DAF IG and facilitated by the Air Force Survey Office. “It is critical that we hear from you because you are a central part of the solution,” Roth said.

Space Delta 9 builds orbital warfare tradecraft from the ground up By 2nd Lt. Remington Sawade | PETERSON-SCHRIEVER GARRISON SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Space Delta 9 is the orbital warfare component of the U.S. Space Force. Its mission is to prepare, present and project assigned and attached forces for the purpose of conducting protect and defend operations and providing national decision authorities with response options to deter and, when necessary, defeat orbital threats. Additionally, Space Delta 9 supports Space Domain Awareness by conducting space-based battlespace characterization operations and also conducts on-orbit experimentation and technology demonstrations for the USSF. “At the heart of it, Delta 9 exists to protect, and when necessary, defend U.S. and allied interests in space,” said Chief Master Sgt. Frederick Jaehnig, Space Delta 9 Senior Enlisted Leader. Space Delta 9 was established and activated on July 24, 2020, as a powerful, afternoon thunderstorm raged outside. Founded after the birth of the USSF, it is an entirely new organization comprised of the 1st Space Operations Squadron, 3rd Space Operations Squadron, 750th Operations Support Squadron and Space Delta 9 Detachment 1. The men and women of Space Delta 9 are known as Stormbringers because not only were they born in a storm – the unit activation ceremony took place during a sudden and vicious thunderstorm – they also “bring the storm” with their protect and defend mission. Each organization within Space Delta 9 brings unique abilities to complete the mission. 1st SOPS is the USSF’s premier organization for space-based SDA assuring access to space by commanding satellites to collect and disseminate decision-quality information throughout the spectrum of conflict. “1st SOPS provides a critical function of [orbital warfare] in that it executes characterization of threats ops to protect and defend our space capabilities. My role as a cyber-professional in a space world is to maintain all of the connections and equipment that goes between the computers that the operators use to command and control the spacecraft and the communication networks and antennas that transmit commands to the spacecraft on orbit,” said Tech Sgt. Tyler Copeland, Cyber Transport NCOIC, 1st SOPS. Copeland and the other Space Delta 9 cyber professionals hold a unique position as cyberspace subject matter experts embedded in a space operations unit. Cyberspace is a critical component to executing Delta 9’s mission. Space operations holistically includes the space, terrestrial and link segments. Having embedded cyberspace experts is critical to ensuring 1st SOPS operators are able to command and control their spacecraft. Copeland and the 1 SOPS Mission Assurance team ensure that the 1st SOPS ground systems and communications infrastructure that make up the terrestrial segment of space operations are properly maintained and operational to enable 1st SOPS space mission. This integration of efforts extends beyond 1st SOPS and Space Delta 9. “All of the space deltas are linked through combat operations. In order for these combat operations to be effective we have to work together utilizing each other’s strengths in specific mission areas to accomplish the mission,” said Jaehnig. “These missions require coordination and synchronization of efforts from our embedded intel professionals in Delta 7, our communications experts in Delta 6 and the ground-based space domain awareness teammates from Delta 2, among others.” The importance of teamwork reaches beyond the world of space warfighters. The work of Space Delta 9 and the other deltas affects the everyday life of people across the country and the globe, according to Staff Sgt. Alex Miller, Staff Instructor 3rd SOPS staff instructor. 3rd SOPS is the other operational unit in Space Delta 9. This unit is not to be confused with the 3rd SOPS of old that once operated the Wideband Global SATCOM constellation before merging with Delta 8’s 4th SOPS a few years ago. Space Delta 9’s 3rd SOPS is the nation’s premier space defense unit that conducts on-orbit operations in support of U.S. Space Command. “Spacecraft are critical to our economy and way of life. People would lose a lot if those were to go down. Delta 9 exists to ensure that the other Delta’s spacecraft are protected and defended so they can focus on their core mission,” said Miller. SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Provisional Space Training and Readiness Delta’s Operating Location Alpha (OL-A) recently supported Alaska Air National Guardsmen of the 176th Wing in Operation Noble Defender which took place Jan. 19 to 22, 2021. A search-and-rescue/personnel recovery exercise, Operation Noble Defender is a North American Aerospace Defense Command Arctic airdefense operation. “The Noble Defender exercise series seeks to support a variety of campaign objectives for both the NORAD Command and U.S. Northern Command,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Joseph Alkire III, 611th Air Operations Center deputy commander. “While the Noble Defender series can exercise a wide range of activities, objectives center around the demonstration and ability to conduct agile combat employment principles across the North American area of operation while strategically messaging U.S. and Canadian bi-national defense of the homelands.” Alaska Air National Guard Maj. Daniel Kozak, 211th Rescue Squadron HC-130 pilot and aircraft commander, summarized the wing’s mission profile during the exercise. “The point of this flight today is to practice our search-and-rescue capabilities,” he said. “Every time a mission drops from the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center we are deployed to search for the survivor. Our triad, the HH60’s, HC130J’s, and 212th Rescue Squadron, work together to locate and extract civilians and military personnel during peace and wartime missions respectively.” Kozak said the SERE specialist simulating the downed pilot used a satellite beacon to provide the HC-130 with his location, and he communicated with the crew using a UHF/VHF radio. “To accomplish this mission, we practice scenarios locating simulated survivors using the HC-130’s electro-optical infrared camera and radios,” Kozak said. “Forward-looking infrared and radios are used on the HH-60. A care package is sometimes air dropped via the HC-130 and can include radios so the pilots and survivors can communicate with us.” Once the crew located the simulated pilot, the Combat King loadmaster air dropped a package tailored for the Arctic with survival gear the isolated person could use to stay safe and healthy until the HH-60 arrived to pick him up. Leveraging in-house space modeling and simulation capabilities, OL-A simulated space electronic intelligence threats and provided combat survivor evader locator data from Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, directly to the cockpits of airborne HH-60G Pave Hawk’s and HC-130J Combat King II’s flying from Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson, Alaska. This tactical threat data was also processed by 176th Operations Support Squadron Intelligence personnel who were battle tracking threat orders of battle from the tactical operations center. This unit level intelligence support provides redundancy and ensures a common operating picture across the combat search and rescue task force. “OL-A takes great pride in supporting 176th combat search and rescue aircrews with our modeling and simulation capabilities,” said U.S. Space Force Master Sgt. Christopher Salch, OL-A operations superintendent. “Receiving live simulated space data ensures that these crews experience the most realistic training possible.” As a direct result of the expertise of OL-A Guardians and Airmen, Pave Hawk and Combat King crew members were able to use space advanced training capabilities to enhance their combat search and rescue skills in the harsh and demanding Arctic environment. “OL-A’s support is in direct response to Gen. Raymond’s guidance to be expert integrators, ensuring joint counterparts in all services and at all levels understand operational implications of space warfighting capabilities,” said Lt. Col. Albert “AC” Harris, OL-A director. “This type of training is vital to our nation’s Joint Force lethality and combat readiness.”

my team plays in that mission’s success.” Space Delta 9 is also looking forward to exciting organizational growth in the near future. “The orbital warfare tradecraft did not exist before the founding of Space Delta 9 and the Delta 9 Stormbringers will shape the methods of this new kind of warfighting,” said Jaehnig. “Delta 9 members are building out the tradecraft, the organization and the U.S. Space Force service at the same time, so our trajectory is definitely on the rise.” Miller agrees that Space Delta 9 is on track to expand. “I think we’re going to be the front line for protecting America’s space assets. We’re going to be the guys making sure the warfighters down range stay safe. I imagine that job is only going to grow in the next decade or so,” said Miller.

The commission to examine the problem of sexual assault in the military should begin work soon, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III is looking forward to their recommendations, Pentagon Press Secretary John F. Kirby said during a news conference this afternoon. The commission has 90 days to compile its recommendations. Kirby said the secretary will not wait until the end of the commission to implement recommendations he feels would be helpful. Kirby also said DOD officials will consult with congressional leaders as the commission comes together. Austin met with senior Pentagon leaders today to give them his feedback on their inputs for combating sexual assault. "As you know, it was his first directive on his second day in office to ask the services to provide him input on what they felt they were doing right, what they needed to improve and the ideas they had going forward," Kirby said. "He had the opportunity to review that work and talk to them about that today. It was a good productive discussion." Austin told the leaders, which included the service chiefs, that by the end of the week he will formally announce the formation, make-up and start of the 90-day commission. With more granularity and more detail. Kirby was also asked about the dearth of information about extremism in the ranks. He said everyone would like better information on the extent of the problem of extremism in the department but it is not really something people readily admit to. "We get a sense that the problem is largely driven by conduct and behavior," Kirby said. Even then it is sometimes difficult to ascertain if the conduct is driven by ideology or some other factor, he said. Kirby also spoke about the missile attack in Baghdad today. That attack followed one in Erbil last week that killed an American and wounded others. He said there is no attribution for the attacks. He could not tie the attacks together. "It's difficult to say with certainty whether there's a strategic calculation driving this … recent uptick in attacks, or whether this is just a continuation of the sorts of attacks we've seen in the past," he said. U.S. officials will work closely with Iraqis — who are leading the investigation. "We're there to counter ISIS, at the invitation of the Iraqi government," Kirby said. "Our commanders — just like the Iraqi commanders — have the right of self-defense."
