21st Space Wing squadron poised to receive first Space Force weapon system

Erica Picariello | 21ST SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Imagine a secure communications room, like what has been shown in big-screen blockbuster movies…dozens of space and communications professionals behind computer terminals working together to deny an adversary the ability to attack the United States.

Now imagine being able to pick-up and throw that entire room into a plane and drop it into a deployed location, enabling allied forces to counter attacks in the midst of a crisis.

That is the capability that the 21st Space Wing will soon

bring online with impending operational acceptance of the new Counter Communications System upgrade.

“The Counter Communications System is a transportable satellite communications system that provides a groundbased capability to reversibly deny adversary satellite communications,” said Maj. Seth Horner, United States Space Force Space and Missile Systems Center CCS B10.2 program manager. “CCS has had incremental upgrades since the early 2000’s, which have incorporated new techniques, frequency bands, technology refreshes, and lessons learned from

previous block upgrades. This specific upgrade includes new software capabilities to counter new adversary targets and threats.”

Total force Airmen worked with L3Harris during the last year to put together a comprehensive training program for this new software upgrade for the technicians who would be using it, as well as sending the software through rigorous testing.

Total Force Recruiting reaches diverse market with Snocross racing

By Master Sgt. Chance Babin | AIR FORCE RECRUITING SERVICE PUBLIC AFFAIRS DEADWOOD, S.D. (AFNS) — The Air Force and Total Force Recruiting were front and center in the historic Old West town of Deadwood at the U.S. Air Force Snocross National races, Jan. 24-25.

For Air Force Total Force Recruiting, it’s not just about getting enough people to join the Air Force, it’s about getting a diverse mix of people representative of the nation to join. When it comes to recruiting, the snow-belt states on the northern tier, the Air Force has a long running sponsorship with Scheuring Speed Sports and the International Series of Champions.

Snocross racing features high-performance snowmobiles racing through various tracks.

Racing events take place from as far east as New York, west to Colorado and north to the Dakotas. The sport draws large crowds, including lots of young, mechanically inclined adventure sport enthusiasts – a key demographic for Total Force Recruiting.

“When you talk about diversity, there’s racial diversity, cultural diversity and geographic diversity. For the Air Force to try and get after some of that geographic diversity is very hard when you get to the northern-tier states,” said Brig. Gen. Scott Durham, Air Force Recruiting Service deputy commander.

“It can be a challenge to consolidate populations enough to even have an effective recruiting message or mission. Snocross is a great event for that. I think it brings people together and is a great opportunity to get some of that geographic diversity and tell the Air Force story.”

For Scheuring Speed Sports team owner, Steve Scheuring, his relationship with the Air Force dates back more than two decades.

“It started out back in the late 90s with a local recruiter in Minneapolis who came to a race to check it out and saw the excitement, adrenaline and high-flying action at the track and saw a lot of parallels with what the Air Force does,” he said. “So, we worked with

the local recruiter and created a little bit of a partnership and did a bunch of branding on our snowmobiles and it ended up being a great deal. It’s been a partnership made in heaven since then.”

Many recruiters and commanding officers have worked with Scheuring and his team over the years.

“I think what makes this a great partnership is the people,” Schering said. “Every single person I’ve met in the Air Force has been fantastic. They partnered with me and we have worked very hard every single day to do the best for the Air Force. The key to our success is the people. I’ve probably worked with a dozen generals over the years. It’s been a great ride.”

For the Air Force recruiters, the Scheuring team helps build bridges into a region of the United States that can be difficult to recruit.

“We push the mechanical side of things to the individuals when we go out to the school visits," said Tech. Sgt. Aaron Mormon, 343rd Recruiting Squadron lead marketer. "Steve does a great job of tying that back into how the mechanics that his crew does relates back to the Air Force as well. It’s a great opportunity to showcase that.”

Prior to each national race, the Scheuring team goes to local high schools or secondary schools and puts on a presentation with the local recruiters. They talk about the technology they use to win races.

“We talk about making good choices in life and about having good attitudes,” Scheuring said. “We bring out drivers, mechanics and myself for questions and answers. Then, we give out a scholarship after each visit. It’s a thank you for letting us come to their school.

It usually goes to a deserving student who works really hard but seems to get missed out on scholarships and stuff. It’s not a lot of money, but to them it’s a huge deal.”

“They grow up doing this, riding snowmobiles and that kind of stuff,” Mormon said.

“When they ask questions to Steve about the actual mechanics of the sleds, that’s when you see the value of the partnership. He can sit down and say the compression ratio of the sled is this and this and he ties it back to the compression ratios on jet aircraft engines.

For us to be able to showcase this is a huge opportunity we wouldn’t otherwise have if we weren’t a partner with his team.”

“The school visits are fun,” said Lincoln Lemieux, one of Scheurling’s race drivers.

“Not everybody is interested in what we do, but there are always a few kids who are super interested in the Air Force or the racing part of it. It’s really cool because we can tie the two together with the technology and the hard work and dedication we put into it.”

Lemieux said being part of the Air Force team has been a special ride.

“Wearing the Air Force logo means so much to me,” he said. “I’ve been on this team for seven years so I don’t know anything else. Just to race for the Air Force and all the opportunities they give us. All the men and women sacrifice their lives just so we can live free and have the life we want just means so much.”

Durham said the Scheuring team and the Air Force are a good fit because both stress preparation, the use of technology, and physical and mental training.

“I think Steve and the Scheuring racing team are out to win,” he said. “They want to be the best and they take it seriously. We share a belief in fitness, preparation and hard work and that all shines through here. It takes a bit of grit to stand the cold, and a little bit of grit goes a long way.”

Air Force partners Space Force decommissions 26-year-old GPS with Google to satellite to make way for GPSIII constellation improve IT security

HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. (AFNS) — To continue to provide IT best practices to its users, the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Hanscom Air Force Base, Massachusetts, awarded a $2 million experimental Other Transaction Agreement to Google.

The new agreement, awarded in December, is part of a broader Air Force Enterprise IT-as-a-Service, or EITaaS, risk reduction effort to test the technical feasibility of commercial solutions. The effort covers three areas: Network-as-a-Service, End User Services and Compute and Store, and consists of technical assessments to determine if alternative solutions can meet unique Air Force requirements.

Under the terms of the agreement, Google will provide services that leverage its expertise in IT security, including scalable and secure networking.

“We want to understand how Google provides secure and reliable access to data,” said Capt. Trey LaSane, EITaaS project officer in the Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence and Networks directorate. “We ultimately want to enable a more secure platform, where we are able to identify users and ensure they have the appropriate permissions to connect them with the data they need.”

Overall, it should help the Air Force give Airmen the right access to the right data at the right time.

LaSane also said the Air Force wants to incorporate “best-of-breed” industry practices.

“Are there ways we can increase effectiveness for our users?” he asked.

As part of this agreement, Google will also assess the Air Force’s current enterprise IT landscape and measure the digital experience of Airmen across the Air Force.

In addition, Google will work with the Air Force to develop a plan to potentially integrate its commercial solutions at an Air Force test site, exploring the future viability for innovative solutions across the Air Force enterprise.

By Airman Amanda Lovelace | 50TH SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 2nd Space Operations Squadron decommissioned Satellite Vehicle Number-36, the second to last Block IIA satellite, Jan. 27.

Capt. Collin Dart, 2nd SOPS assistant flight commander of GPS mission engineering, said the disposal of SVN-36 will allow for newer vehicles to take it’s place.

“The main reason it was decommissioned was because, at this time, we’re accepting a lot of the new generation GPS

IIIs,” he said. “We’re trying to open up the constellation to accept more of those new vehicles.”

Initially launched March 10, 1994, the satellite exceeded its estimated design life of around seven years, serving operationally for nearly 26 years.

First Lt. Kristina Brandes, 2nd SOPS chief GPS sub-systems analyst, credited maintenance for exceeding its design life.

“The disposal of SVN-36 won’t have an effect on any holes or signal outages,” she said. “We still maintain 31 operational

satellites and 35 total satellites in our constellation.”

Space operators at 2nd SOPS perform command and control operations 24/7, 365 to support the constellation for 4 billion worldwide users.

“I think it’s really awesome that Airmen have been able to maintain this entire constellation and push past the boundary of its design life,” Brandes said.

The decommissioning the final GPS Block IIA satellite is scheduled to happen later this year.

Even though training was available and personnel trained to command the asset, there was still work to be done to ensure operational success.

“We just went through a year-long test campaign that included both developmental and operational test events,” Horner said. “Fourth SPCS provided operators for the test events and they performed exceptionally.

Overall, the test campaign was extremely successful in demonstrating that CCS is operationally effective thanks to the incredible skill from those 4 SPCS operators. With the test events being successful, we are

poised for an operational acceptance decision to be made soon.”

This successful test campaign is a war-time game-changer, according to the 4th SPCS commander, Lt. Col. William Sanders.

“The upgraded CCS system is a game-changer for deployed ground forces,” Sanders said. “Today, deployed forces benefit from a similar quick reaction capability providing direct operational support daily.

With operational acceptance of CCS, we can employ greater effects for the combatant commands.”

SMC leadership is equally excited to have this 21st SW asset operational in support of USSF warfighting operations.

“CCS is the only offensive system in the United States Space Force arsenal,” said Lt. Col. Steve Brogan, SMC combat systems branch materiel leader of the SMC special programs directorate. “This upgrade puts the ‘force’ in Space Force and is critical for Space as a warfighting domain.”

Upon operational acceptance, SMC leadership plans to present a symbolic “key” to the upgraded CCS system to the 4th SPCS commander in a ceremony on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, to signify the transition to full operations.

Academy brings back MTIs as CW refocuses on training fundamentals

By Jennifer Spradlin | U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY PUBLIC AFFAIRS U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — For the first time in a decade, the Academy will have permanent military training instructors on the Cadet Wing staff to enhance the military training program here.

“I want this to be the nation’s most disciplined, professional and future-focused military training organization,” said Brig. Gen. Michele Edmondson, commandant of cadets.

In 2004, the Academy created the Academy Military Trainer program. The role of AMTs quickly evolved into a mentorship and leadership support function to squadron air officers commanding. After 2009, when the last MTI transitioned from the Cadet Wing, their role in training was reduced to weeklong training sessions before Basic Cadet Training.

As part of ongoing training evaluation, the commandant, who previously commanded the 737th Training Group at

Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, identified the need for MTIs to bring their expertise back to the Academy.

“The Air Force has invested significant training in our MTI corps and as a result, the MTIs we develop today have incredible maturity, leadership experience and a deep understanding of what training ‘right’ looks like,” Edmondson said.

Five MTIs are slated to join the Cadet Wing by March as preparations for BCT ramp up. Master Sgt. Marcus Coley, the first MTI, has arrived and is working with cadet training officers to improve their squadron training sessions.

“I see our role as providing guidance to the cadets and making sure accountability is a core part of their daily interactions,” Coley said. “There needs to be a balance between making corrections and the follow-up, mentorship piece [of leading].”

He said emphasis on proper wear of the uniform and drill and ceremony is key to establishing self-discipline. He also championed transparency and respect and dignity while addressing infractions.

“There are different ways to get someone’s attention other than doing push-ups, and I’m just excited to share my training expertise with the cadets here,” he said.

As part of its new training plan, the Cadet Wing will also leverage experts in the Athletic Department to lead and plan physical conditioning for recruits during BCT to reduce injuries and better prepare the cadets to meet Air Force standards.

“We’re looking to see that consistency in training across the squadrons so that all cadets have the same opportunity to succeed here,” Edmondson said.

Over the winter break, the U.S. Air Force Academy cadet spent time mentoring middle and high schoolers at the Fort Bend Juvenile Facility in Richmond, Texas. The facility houses juveniles awaiting court appearances for a wide range of illegal behavior from theft to assault.

“Humility is so key, I think, to being a good leader, and I felt that I could learn as much from these kids as they learned from me,” he said.

Njoku is the first to admit he’s not perfect. He mishandled a personal situation during the summer heading into his junior year at the Academy and was found in violation of the school’s Honor Code.

Cadets are held to a high standard that governs their conduct and serves as the framework for the honorable service expected after graduation.

Njoku owned his mistake and worked hard to remediate the violation.

More than that, he carried those lessons into his time with the young people he mentored.

“I told them, ‘Hey, I’ve made mistakes, too. Mistakes happen in life, but don’t get discouraged by your current circumstances.’ It was important to give back and let these kids know they still have value,” he said.

The detention facility focuses on educational courses during the school year but brings in mentors during holiday and summer breaks to model positive behaviors and outcomes for the kids, hoping to reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

“A lot of these kids are just trying to survive, and no one else has really shown them there are different options out there for them,” said Susan Bearden, Fort Bend Juvenile Facility special programs director.

“It makes such a huge difference when the mentors are younger (like Prince) because it’s so much more relatable for them.”

Njoku emigrated to the U.S. from Africa when he was 7 years old. He said his family bought into the American dream and the opportunities available in America. In high school, he played football and caught the eye of Academy scouts.

“I was scared at first about coming here because I knew the expectations would be high. I worried maybe I wouldn’t succeed, but I knew the chance was just too good to pass up, and I’m grateful I gave it a try,” he said.

Injuries ultimately sidelined his collegiate football career, but Njoku is active in other sports at the Academy. He hopes to be a pilot but will make the most of any opportunity to serve in the Air Force.

Njoku said mentorship and family support were key to his own personal success and without it he might have been in over his head as a teen.

KoenigerTo position the Air Force as a more lethal force, the Air Force Medical Readiness Agency is building and modernizing medical capabilities for peer and nearpeer wartime operations.

“Lt. Gen. Dorothy Hogg [the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General] made it clear we have to look at readiness through a different lens and adjust how we deliver operational medical support,” said Brig. Gen. Mark Koeniger, Air Force Medical Readiness Agency commander. “For a long time, the United States has been involved in small-scale conflicts.

Now, we are shifting our focus towards future contingencies unlike those we have conducted in the past 30 years.”

The agency, which began operations in June 2019, replaced two previous field operating agencies. It supports the Air Force Surgeon General with management and oversight of medical readiness activities. Part of its mandate is to sustain current medical forces while planning for future requirements.

With medical capabilities spanning 10 major commands, Koeniger said the agency is needed as an integrator to align activities to meet mission requirements.

“For example, Air Mobility Command owns the aeromedical evacuation mission and Air Combat Command owns the Expeditionary Medical Support System,” said Koeniger. “We are assessing how to best integrate those two capabilities in the context of

possible peer and near-peer conflicts.”

The agency is exploring new ways to modernize its capabilities and meet evolving operational requirements, such as FlexMed and MedicX. FlexMed is an initiative embodied in policy and information technology, said the general.

It will take defined mission parameters, draw on personnel and logistics data sources, and use algorithms from artificial intelligence to produce medical force package options.

“FlexMed will determine the required medical support in terms of organizational structure, personnel and supplies,” he said.

Another initiative the agency is focusing on is MedicX, which will train all uniformed medics to perform tactical lifesaving skills, even if their primary job is something other than direct care. This initiative will expand and standardize the base level medical skills required in degraded operational environments.

“We need to be ready for possible operations against major actors, which requires our Airmen to be equipped with different skills and knowledge sets to deliver medical care in new and increasingly challenging environments,” said the general.

Koeniger believes MedicX is vital to evolving operational requirements.

“The Air Force is preparing for possible operations against major actors, which requires us to have the right tools, skills and knowledge sets to deliver medical care in increasingly challenging environments,” he said. “We provide combatant commanders with modular, adaptive capabilities. We are building a medical force that is ready today and ready tomorrow.”

Eyes on it: Optometry clinic ensures mission readiness

Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. — From annual eye exams to extracting debris from eyes, the Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, optometry clinic sees it all.

Depending on real-world situations such as emergency patients or deployment requirements, personnel at the clinic may see between 30 to 50 patients a day. Serving not only Airman, but Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Coastguardsmen as well, the optometry staff work diligently to ensure each patient is fit to fight.

“The mission of any optometry clinic is ensuring the readiness of the base,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Erich Wanagat, 633rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron optometry flight chief. “We ensure everyone from flyers to maintainers have the required eyewear. We make sure they are seeing as well as possible and that there’s nothing we need to worry about going forward.”

Eye exams are more than just reading a chart; doctors can uncover life-threatening diseases that may not have been discovered otherwise. Therefore, the optometry staff suggest active-duty military members schedule a routine exam at least once every two years to ensure they are healthy and mission-ready.

“Having an annual eye exam is an essential part of your total body health,” said Dr. Courtney Humphrey, 633rd AMDS optometrist. “I have discovered problems with patients who did not need glasses or contacts but had a different type of issue.”

As a way to test visual acuity, patients are required to read from an electronic Snellen chart which simulates what it would look like to read words up to 200 feet away.

When it comes to eyewear, the clinic uses what is called a lensometer to verify patients have the correct prescription.

“The lensometer finds the center point on the lens of glasses and lets us know the patient's prescription based on that reading,” said Senior Airman Alexander Peterson, 633rd AMDS ophthalmic technician. “It lets us know how far apart the pupils are so we know where the light’s coming in.”

Another important part the clinic is the Aircrew Soft Contact Lens Program which ensures pilots who wear contact lenses are supplied with the best prescription and have a matching set of glasses.

“We work with Flight Medicine to make sure that any pilot on active flying status checks in with us for their contact lenses,” Peterson said. “All the pilots are required to have a pair of glasses with them while wearing contact lenses in the

Helping to keep other services mission-ready, the clinic also teaches U.S. Army and U.S. Navy students hands-on skills such as cutting lenses, making glasses, writing prescriptions and much more.

“We help them brush up on skills as if they were working in a family practice,” Peterson said.

The ophthalmology clinic is conveniently located in the

same hall as optometry, therefore any patients requiring surgeries are able to be treated within the same facility.

“This improves patients’ access to care,” Wanagat said.

“We are able to see these patients in a timely manner and tap into specialty care when necessary.”

Doctors and personnel at the Langley clinic continue to ensure active-duty military members receive the best care possible to continue the mission of their specific unit and base.

Early in January, I met with the organizers of the recently formed Colorado Springs Chef’s Guild (best connected with publicly for now via their Instagram page), and I’m going to pluck the best bits from our two-hour sit-down and paraphrase the gist of what we talked about. They called the meeting to get me up to speed on their goals, and they invited me to speak at their next meeting in late January.

The chefs (19 so far, representing places ranging from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to Lucky Dumpling to the Broadmoor) describe themselves on their private Facebook group page as: “A group of determined professionals coming together to bridge the gap in the service industry of collaboration versus competition, with the aim to grow ourselves personally, professionally, and as a community.”

Pretty much the first thing the Chef’s Guild organizers — Chris Lerdall, TAPAteria chef; Justin Castor, Urban Egg executive chef; and Hannah Cupples, Wobbly Olive chef and restaurant consultant, as well as former chef de cuisine at Four by Brother Luck — said to me upon sitting down with them over coffee was that they’d taken note of my recent review of The Roswell and the broader questioning inside it about the direction of the Colorado Springs food scene at-large.

Thematically, it’s something they’ve been discussing also, as they look to elevate our scene. They say they’re hungry for more criticism in the wider interest of inspiring chefs to be their better selves.

(I confess this sounded good to hear, that they understand and respect the role of critical writing, which in part offers chefs honest feedback and a chance to improve, while also guiding readers to worthwhile spots as a utilitarian public service.)

They too are noticing regional expansions and/ or chain places coming in from Denver and beyond (see: Denver Biscuit Company, Dos Santos, Snooze, Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar) and have a gut feeling those types of openings locally will continue if the Springs doesn’t bolster itself with enough really quality home-grow stuff. To be clear, many of these expansions are awesome, welcome and certainly have a place in our scene as options that may not be a mom-and-pop one-off, but are still keeping money relatively local compared to mass-market chain places. And they’re showing a level of excellence proved in bigger and more persnickety marketplaces like Boulder.

We’re better with them.

Our Guild’s not looking to cut chefs from those places out of the discussion, or talk trash about anyone, they tell me; in fact, quite the opposite, they say one of the discussions in their first meetings centered around everyone’s favorite spots in town, and why, basically championing what the Springs is doing well at present. The meetings are town halls for the industry, they say.

To me, they sounded genuinely constructive and well-intended, grasping broadly at how to figure out things like employee retention and best wage practices, best-educating the line cooks coming up, and communicating well between restaurants to share knowledge and tips such as great purveyors of items like locally grown microgreens.

Simply put, they want to see better food all around, to place the Springs as a destination market, not secondary place. To further clarify this point, they talk about how real foodies regularly drive to Denver to eat at top spots, but not enough traffic’s going the other direction.

Yet we have deserving eateries here, now. (We digressed briefly to point out how Urban Egg has actually grown northward into Denver, and how Bingo Burger was popular enough to hop from small-market Pueblo to the Springs.)

These chefs feel they don’t need to be in competition with one another, that the town’s easily big enough for everyone, and growing to support even more spots. So ahead of that growth is the vital time to have these discussions, while a supportive framework can be laid to set the table, so to speak.

My takeaway: With enough chefs on board (they’re spreading the word now to gain new members) and active participation, this guild should be a force for good. Though their effectiveness might largely be hidden behind closed kitchen doors as day-to-day matters go, a span of years will ultimately determine the Springs’ path toward (or...groan...away from) greatness as destination spots go. The word “middling” came up in various contexts in our discussion (yeah, I guess that counts as a direct quote after all), and that’s not a place where any chef or scene wants to linger. So, let’s not.

Shortly after posting this blog, I heard from area grower Dan Hobbs of the Rocky Mountain Farmers Union, who saw the post and offered a mini history lesson about another earlier attempt to unite chefs in some capacity.

From his Facebook comment: “We started doing this with the chef’s collaborative in 1999 and it seems that, at least with respect to local food procurement, Springs has been in culinary decline for some time...

I may not know the whole story, but here is what I remember from 1999-early 2000s: Chris Adrian at La Petite Maison was the driving force, working closely with Carrie Carter Balkcom from Denver, who I think was with Chef’s Collaborative at the time. I think Brent [Beavers] was cutting his teeth at La Petite at the time, and there was a fellow named Marcus at Walter’s Bistro who was getting some notoriety, maybe for working with Bison meat.

He left the area early on and the main chef group that was working with the farmers and seemed to have higher culinary standards and appetite for innovation were John Broening of Primativo, Chip [Johnson] of Briarhurst, James Africano at the Warehouse, and of course David [McDonough] at Adams [Mountain Cafe], but I don’t remember him engaging much with that chef’s collaborative/Club 9 group.”

If I hear from some of the other chefs from that era with more info, I’ll update this post again.

Credit where it’s due, and all. Clearly these new Guild members aren’t the first to be examining our scene (it’s done between a few chefs here and there all the time) but perhaps they’ll prove to be the most organized — and, if they meet their mission, the most effective.

2020 ‘The Year of Air Force Optometry’

Air Force optometry came into existence around the same time the Air Force Medical Service stood up on July 1, 1949, and has been caring for the vision of aviators and warfighters ever since. 2020, ‘The Year of Optometry’, focuses on ensuring eye health and vision care are a priority.

Air Force optometry came into existence around the same time the Air Force Medical Service stood up on July 1, 1949, and has been caring for the vision of aviators and warfighters ever since. During World War II, enlisted hospital corpsmen without any formal training were providing limited vision care using crude equipment. However, between 1950 and 1960, the Air Force saw great improvements, both in the type and quality of equipment available for optometry services, and commissioned optometrists were added to the Medical Service Corps.

In 1965, Air Force optometry became part of the newly established Biomedical Sciences Corps, and by the late 1960s achieved its end strength of 170 fully trained active duty doctors of optometry, providing for the visual welfare of more than 900,000 active duty Airmen.

Today, the Air Force optometry team, an optometrist supported by ophthalmic technicians, applies extensive knowledge of unique Air Force operating environments to prescribe precision optical devices designed to enhance performance, survivability and lethality of Airmen. The 142 optometrists and 236 ophthalmic technicians in the Air Force provide care for 2.6 million active duty, dependent and retiree beneficiaries around the globe.

For 70 years, Air Force optometry has blazed a trail that has led to incredible contributions in vision research, treatment and protection. Thanks to the tireless dedication of eye care specialists, both past and present, Air Force optometry has been and will continue to be at the forefront of vision readiness and medical innovations.

“As we begin calendar year 2020, ‘The Year of Optometry’, we hope that you will make your eye health and vision care a priority and ensure that your vision is 20/20 or better!,” said Col. Christine Stabile, Air Force Surgeon General Optometry consultant, speaking to beneficiaries. “An eye exam is the simplest step you can take to protect your vision and to make sure that you are always fit to fight.”

Active duty members can contact their appointment line or visit their TRICARE or MHS GENESIS portal to schedule a comprehensive eye exam with their military optometry clinic.

Non-active duty beneficiaries can check with their military optometry clinic for availability of appointments or contact a local civilian optometry clinic that accepts TRICARE. Dependents of active duty enrolled in TRICARE Prime are eligible for one exam per year. Retirees and their dependents are eligible for comprehensive eye exam every two years.

Sorry, flu, not this year

By Shaun Eagan | DLA TROOP SUPPORT PUBLIC AFFAIRS PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Even with the scare of a highly contagious virus spreading each year, U.S. service members and beneficiaries can feel relieved this flu season.

Through a complex and heavily coordinated global effort, the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Medical supply chain teamed with Department of Defense partners to provide 3.4 million doses of the influenza vaccine to service members, dependents and retirees.

“Everybody knows preventing the flu and getting our service members vaccinated is so important every year,” said Jenna Wesolowski, a Medical contracting officer. “The dedication of everyone involved just shows and makes the program so successful because we try our hardest to get everybody vaccinated.”

The DLA Troop Support Medical team worked alongside the Defense Health Agency, DLA Distribution and military service medical logistics personnel through a yearlong effort supporting the DOD’s 2019-2020 Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Program and its goal to vaccinate 90 percent of all service members by Jan. 15.

“My dad was a Marine, so I think of him being out in the field and I wouldn’t want him getting sick with the flu … that's why I love this job,” Wesolowski explained. “I just think it's so important to dedicate yourself to the warfighter because they’re the people protecting us. This program has always been super important to me.”

Flu season most commonly occurs during the fall and winter months, historically peaking from December through February. The season can sometimes last all the way until May, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to DHA, the 2019-2020 flu season was successful in meeting its service member vaccination goal thanks to the communication and dedication of the agencies involved.

“The relationship between DLA, DHA-

Immunization Healthcare Division and the services is instrumental to a successful program,” said Tara Reavey, DHA-IHD’s Policy and Program Management section chief. “New challenges impact each flu vaccination season and DHA-IHD, DLA and the services work very hard to minimize the impact of these challenges and to serve all customers in a timely manner.”

The Medical supply chain acquires the vaccines, ensures the manufacturer delivers the vaccines to the DLA Distribution warehouse on time and then coordinates deliveries to military treatment facilities and the Navy fleet around the globe.

Wesolowski and her teammates begin the contracting aspect of the program about a year out from flu season in January. As the season approaches, they work with the vendor on contractual obligations and monitor the program’s status until all the vaccines are delivered to Distribution’s warehouses, usually by the end of fall.

“We constantly communicate with the vendor for status and delivery updates,” Wesolowski said. “Then we relay that message to the customers and Distribution. That communication helps us overcome any hiccups, and I think that everybody did a good job getting the services vaccinated [this season].”

As the vaccines are delivered to the warehouse, Wesolowski and her teammates begin handing the program responsibilities off to another Medical team.

“When the services tell us what they want shipped, that's when our part kicks in,” explained Dana Dallas, the head of Medical’s cold chain management team. “It's our job to get the vaccines released from the warehouse and work with Distribution to make sure they get shipped correctly. We’ll [also] work with the carriers to make sure they deliver on time.”

Military service medical logistics organizations, such as U.S. Army Medical Materiel Agency Distribution Operations Center, Naval Medical Logistics Command and Air Force Medical Readiness Agency, let the supply chain know when customers need vaccines, and upon receipt of the request, Medical coordinates with Distribution for delivery, Dallas said.

However, Dallas added, the challenge is overcoming the cold chain management obstacles such as temperature sensitivity, shelf life considerations and weather interruptions.

These challenges makes the delivery process more complicated when delivering to overseas locations, like Navy vessels that are constantly moving at sea or military treatment facilities located in remote locations with limited accessibility.

Using a Navy vessel as an example, Dallas says there are many variables to consider for delivery.

“I have to find them and find out how long they’re going to be at a certain location,”

Dallas explained. “Are they somewhere I can deliver to, and if not, what's their next location? Do I need to go through a crossdock location because I cannot get to theirs directly? Do I have to use military airlift because the commercial carriers can't get to the island or do I have to float it to them?”
