Increase your overall water intake throughout the day to help you perform at your absolute best. Here are some tips to do so: •• Keep a water bottle with you at all times. You will be more likely to drink water if you have it in front of you.

•• Replace at least one sugary beverage with water per day to start and build on that each following week.

•• Eat more water-rich fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, melons, celery, and romaine lettuce.

•• Add your own natural flavor to water to make it more appetizing by adding a tablespoon of natural juice or using a water fruit infuser bottle.

•• Log your water intake on your phone by using an app such as “Waterlogged” or “MyFitnessPal”.

•• Some people are “salty sweaters” meaning that they lose more sodium in their sweat than normal. This can be determined by salty marks on your skin and clothes or if your sweat tastes salty or burns your eyes. If you are a salty sweater, it is recommended to add salt to foods, eat a salty snack before a workout and replace losses with salty food or soups after a workout.

Area Dental Laboratory symposium helps service members polish skills

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The fourth annual Area Dental Lab symposium began Tuesday, January 14, 2020, bringing together 147 attendees to learn about advances in dental laboratory tools and techniques. The event brought members of the Air Force, Army and Navy to a hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where they attended a variety of courses and training sessions. It was organized by Lt. Col. Geoff Gessel, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, area dental laboratory director.

“We had 16 different courses, and 10 different companies came to help us out,” said Gessel. “Over the three days, each technician had eight hours worth of continuing education available. This symposium has hands-on training that doesn't happen anywhere else.”

The technicians Gessel mentions were, by and large, educators sent by companies that the U.S. Military buys dental supplies from. Their specialized knowledge offers service members greater depth of knowledge and familiarity with their tools and supplies.

“The people that are presenting, they're the experts,” said Tech Sgt. Monique Chamberland, 48th Dental Squadron dental lab tech at Royal Air Force Lakenheath, Great Britain. “We might have some experience with staining and glazing [dental crowns to make them look like real teeth], but their techniques are so, so much more advanced than what we do, so everyone can pick up something.”

Over the course of the three-day symposium, Chamberland amassed a wealth of practical knowledge and experience to bring back to her team at RAF Lakenheath.

The U.S. Military uses dentistry supplies from a variety of companies — one company’s design software, another company’s stain and glaze, and so on — and working with the experts at this symposium also helped her and other service members better understand the tools and supplies they use.

“With these materials, if we run into an issue, the experts will tell us that it could be the oven, or it could be the temperature or the maintenance of the equipment,” said Chamberland.

But the symposium was not merely three days of vendors teaching service members how to use their tools. Master Sgt. Vladimir Roman, 88th Dental Squadron dental lab flight chief at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, helped coordinate and teach courses on using 3D printers to make dental devices, in a collaboration between Airmen from Wright-Patterson and Massachusetts-based 3D printing company Formlabs. He was part of the team that integrated 3D printing into his base’s surgical implant workflow, streamlining their efforts and saving money.

“We did a lot of research, a lot of collaborating with Formlabs via the phone, and we got the workflow to develop,” said Roman. “We did parallel processing or parallel fabrications, where we use the traditional methods, and then we use the digital 3D printing methods, and then once the parameters were all dialed in, we streamlined the workflow. After we got all that down in about six months, saving a lot of money and time, our group commander sourced more printers, and that helped us keep increasing productivity.”

Once word spread that he and his team had figured out how to use these tools, Roman said they started getting requests for support and training for the incorporation of 3D printing into dentistry around the Air Force. Bringing the course to the ADL symposium came next, and Roman said they plan to repeat it next year. He and his team will be improving the course based on the feedback they’ve received from service members at the symposium.

New Space Force leader visits crew at Cavalier Air Station

CAVALIER AIR FORCE STATION (AFS), N.D. — Gen. Jay Raymond, U.S. Space Force chief of space operations, visited here, Jan. 10, for his first in-depth look at the Cavalier mission and to provide Spartan Airmen insight into the future of Space Force.

Cavalier AFS is the only isolated stateside installation in the Air Force. Located 15 miles west of the city of Cavalier, North Dakota, and 15 miles south of the Canadian border, Cavalier is home to the 10th Space Warning Squadron, which operates the Perimeter Acquisition Radar Attack Characterization System.

During his visit Raymond visited the PARCS, the only operational ground-based phased-array radar remaining from the 1970’s era “Safeguard” anti-ballistic missile program. In addition, he made history as the first commander to put a signature on the U.S. Space Command banner inside the facility.

He toured through the community activity center and took part in a lunch hosted by Spartan Airmen and their spouses, where he was able to take time to get to talk with them and their families.

Raymond also took the opportunity to speak with Airmen during an all-call where he announced a new $700 a month assignment incentive pay that will be given to those assigned to Cavalier. The AIP will provide financial relief for Cavalier airmen who pay on average 49% more for groceries due to their remote duty location.

“It is an exciting time to be in the space business”, Raymond said.

Following the all-call, Raymond participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony that recognized the official activation and full operational capability of the 10 SWS Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility. The SCIF will serve as the primary catalyst for enabling intel-driven operations for Cavalier.

Raymond was stationed at nearby Grand Forks Air Force Base from August 1985 to October 1989, where he was a second lieutenant assigned to the 321st Strategic Missile Wing.

Today, he is the principal military adviser to the Secretary of the Air Force for Space Operations and supervises Space Force units and organizations as the designee of the SECAF.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The aquatic center on Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, will reopen on Monday, February 3. It will be open from 5:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays. During the pool’s five‐month closure, the 21st Civil Engineer Squadron repaired and renovated equipment in the mechanical room for the main pool.

“They also scrubbed the bottom and sides of the pool, so it’ll look brighter than before,” says Deanna Busha, 21st Force Support Squadron aquatic center manager.

This renovation did not include repairs on the kiddie pool, which was damaged by a hail storm in 2016. Busha says it will remain closed until further notice. However, the aquatic center offers a variety of programs and resources to help parents, young children and families of all shapes and sizes have fun and stay fit in the water.

“We try to have something for everyone, no matter the skill level,” says Busha. “We have a parent‐child class for kiddos from six months to three years old, which is all about getting the kids into the water for the first time, getting them acclimated and prepping them for swim lessons. Once they turn three, they can take group lessons. We offer lessons for anyone from kids just graduating a parent‐child class to kids who are swimming competitively. For adults, we offer private, one‐on‐one swim lessons and a Masters Swim group for more advanced swimmers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and afternoons.”

Beyond classes, the aquatic center offers daily open swim hours.

The shallow end of the pool is available for open swim from 10 a.m. to close on weekdays and from 11 a.m. to close on Saturdays, and the deep end becomes available for open swimming from 2 p.m. to close on weekdays and from noon to close on Saturdays. Patrons will have access to a climbing wall, a water slide and more, and they can rent everything from kickboards to life jackets to help enjoy open swim hours. In the morning, the shallow section of the pool is reserved for fitness and PT activities, which range from basketball and water polo to water aerobics and use of the facility’s brand new aqua bikes.

Lap lanes take up the majority of the pool and will also host weekly functional fitness classes, staged atop floating paddleboards.

“People from the fitness center who are trained in functional fitness, they actually come down and modify their classes to be done on paddleboards. So you are on the paddleboard doing push‐ups, lunges, things like that,” says Busha. “You’re not only working on the muscles geared towards the exercise, you're also working on your balancing muscles, which is really fun.”

U.S. Space Force seeks civilians to join staff

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS — The U.S. Space Force, the new branch of the Armed Forces established Dec. 20, has begun advertising to fill civilian staff positions in its initial headquarters, called the Office of the Chief of Space Operations. Advertisements for the first 35 positions were posted last week, with a second wave of positions to follow soon.

“The law passed by Congress and signed by the President directed immediate establishment of the U.S. Space Force and authorized a modest initial staff,” said Gen. Jay Raymond, chief of space operations and senior member of the Space Force. “As a result, we are moving quickly to hire individuals with the expertise, passion and vision to build the sixth branch of the Armed Forces as a lean, agile and focused military service.”

Individuals eligible for the advertised positions include current or former federal employees in competitive or excepted services, and individuals with specific category qualifications such as career transition, individuals with disabilities, military spouses and veterans.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for civilians to join a new military service and participate in growing the nation’s space capability,” said Patricia Mulcahy, the newly assigned deputy chief of space operations

for personnel and logistics services.

The Space Force is seeking candidates with expertise in functions such as human resources, financial management, intelligence, communications, logistics and contracting.

“We completed the design for the initial staff several months ago, so we would be postured to hire people quickly. Just 30 days after the President signed the legislation, we are posting ads to target individuals with very specific skills. At the same time, we are assigning military members from the Air Force, Army and Navy,” said Maj. Gen. Clint Crosier, who has led the Space Force planning team since last February. “Because the initial staff is small, and even the final staff numbers will be much smaller than the other services, we need to get the right group of experts to work such an important task.

This is history in the making.”

Civilian members working for the Space Force will be Department of the Air Force civilians in the same manner civilians working for the Marine Corps are Department of the Navy civilians.

Coronavirus: What providers, patients should know

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AFNS) — With news of the contagious and potentially deadly illness known as novel coronavirus grabbing headlines worldwide, military health officials say that an informed, common-sense approach minimizes the chances of getting sick.

Many forms of coronavirus exist among both humans and animals, but this new strain’s lethality has triggered considerable alarm. Believed to have originated at an animal market in Wuhan City, China, novel coronavirus has sickened hundreds and killed at least four. It has since spread to other parts of Asia. The first case of novel coronavirus in the U.S. was reported Jan. 22 in the state of Washington.

Anyone contracting a respiratory illness shouldn’t assume it’s novel coronavirus; it is far more likely to be a more common malady.

“For example, right now in the U.S., influenza, with 35 million cases last season, is far more commonplace than novel coronavirus,” said U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps Dr. (Lt. Cmdr.) David Shih, a preventive medicine physician and epidemiologist with the Clinical Support Division, Defense Health Agency. He added that those experiencing symptoms of respiratory illness – like coughing, sneezing, shortness of breath and fever – should avoid contact with others and making them sick, Shih said.

“Don’t think you’re being super dedicated by showing up to work when ill,” Shih said. “Likewise, if you’re a duty

supervisor, please don’t compel your workers to show up when they’re sick. In the short run, you might get a bit of a productivity boost. In the long run, that person could transmit a respiratory illness to co-workers, and pretty soon you lose way more productivity because your entire office is sick.”

Shih understands that service members stationed in areas of strategic importance and elevated states of readiness are not necessarily in the position to call in sick. In such instances, sick personnel still can take steps to practice effective cough hygiene and use whatever hygienic services they can find to avert hindering readiness by making their fellow service members sick. Frequent thorough hand-washing, for instance, is a cornerstone of respiratory disease prevention.

“You may not have plumbing for washing hands, but hand sanitizer can become your best friend and keep you healthy,” Shih said.

Regarding novel coronavirus, Shih recommends following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention travel notices. First, avoid all non-essential travel to Wuhan, China, the outbreak’s epicenter. Second, patients who traveled to China in the past 14 days and show symptoms including fever, cough or difficulty breathing, should seek medical care right away, calling the doctor’s office or emergency room in advance to report travel and symptoms, and otherwise avoid contact with others and travel while sick.

The CDC also has guidance for health care professionals, who should evaluate patients with fever and respiratory illness by taking a careful travel history to identify patients under investigation who include those with fever, lower respiratory illness symptoms, and travel history to Wuhan, China, within 14 days prior to symptom onset.

PUIs should wear a surgical mask as soon as they are identified and be evaluated in a private room with the door closed, ideally an airborne infection isolation room if available. Workers caring for PUIs should wear gloves, gowns, masks, eye protection and respiratory protection.

Perhaps most importantly, care providers who believe they may be treating a novel coronavirus patient should immediately notify infection control and public health authorities (the installation preventive medicine or public health department at military treatment facilities).

Because novel coronavirus is new, as its name suggests, there is as yet no immunization nor specific treatment. Care providers are instead treating the symptoms – acetaminophen to reduce fever, lozenges and other treatments to soothe sore throats, and, for severe cases, ventilators to help patients breathe.

“Lacking specific treatment,” Shih said, “we must be extra vigilant about basic prevention measures: frequent hand-washing, effective cough and sneeze hygiene, avoiding sick individuals and self-isolating when sick.”

By Matthew Schniper | Colorado Springs Independent Year-and-a-half-old Havana Grill recently moved north to 2165 Academy Place, the site of the former Brayla Wedding and Events, which as of the summer of 2019 began hosting the 719 Hump Day Food Truck Rally. What that triggered: The food trucks now park nearby at Copperhead Road on Wednesdays, and the former Havana Grill spot at 3748 Astrozon Blvd. has become El Taco & La Arepa Venezuelan & Mexican Grill.

As for Havana Grill, co-owner Carlos Rodriguez says the new location has “everything we were looking for,” and that after one week open, response “has been amazing.” The team has essentially quadrupled its capacity, capable of seating up to 215 people for dining service (with more tables capable of being set up, he says, noting an overall capacity of 441). That means jumping from seven staff at the old spot to 28 people for weekend nights, when Fridays bring family-friendly karaoke and Saturdays usher in club nights, with free salsa lessons from 8 to 9 p.m., followed by live music or sets by resident DJ DjDannyblaze (Danny Baez) for the 21-and-over crowd until 2 a.m.

Baez spins nightly (except for Sundays, when the venue closes for private parties) and Rodriguez credits production manager Victor Carbonell for helping get Havana Grill to the next level as a legit concert and dance venue, now hosting 24 laser lights and a couple C02 cannons amidst its party arsenal. So, “we’re a restaurant with a music venue,” explains Rodriguez, also listing off four pool tables (with leagues coming soon), an arcade room and dominoes tables. The bar hosts a full beer, wine and spirits menu with mojitos being the best seller by far, while the Cuban food menu remains unchanged, just expanded greatly in daily output.

In other news, the family behind 36-year-old Oliver’s Deli just opened Colorado Crust Pizza Co. (6660 Delmonico Drive, Suite F, coloradocrustpizza. com) inside the same Rockrimmon-area shopping center off Delmonico Drive. Co-owner Andrew Oliver, 32, also co-owns neighboring Bloom Bar & Co. florist.

His parents opened Oliver’s, which he later joined to assist with marketing and back-end work.

Of the new venture, he says, “We’ve had this pizza

recipe in our family always, which I’ve wanted to experiment with.” He adds that when Papa John’s recently closed in what’s now CCPC’s location, “I figured better now than ever.”

Delivery will be available to those with Rockrimmon addresses, so for everyone else dining in, the pizza menu’s broken into white (olive oil or white sauce) or red pies, all 12 inches on house dough except for a 10-inch, gluten-free-friendly cauliflower crust.

Two examples: The Crusty Clam with white sauce, Parmesan, provolone or pecorino, olive oil, honey-smoked bacon, red pepper flakes and lemon and herb littleneck clams.

And the tomato sauce Show Me the Vegan, in part hosting roasted red peppers, portobello mushrooms, spinach, onions and basil. Also look for six salads, pastas, starters, wings, meatballs and four housemade dessert options.

Oliver also notes use of local ingredients, including proteins from Sara’s Sausage (Palmer Lake), sauces and dressings from Kim’s Gourmet (Castle Rock) and Springs-based Lockhart Honey.
