SECAF SELECTS HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA, AS PREFERRED LOCATION TO HOST USSPACECOM

WASHINGTON (AFNS) — The Secretary of the Air Force, on behalf of the Office of Secretary of Defense, selected Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama, as the preferred location for the U.S. Space Command Headquarters.

The Department of the Air Force conducted both virtual and on-site visits to assess which of six candidate locations would be best suited to host the U.S. Space Command Headquarters based on factors related to mission, infrastructure capacity, community support and costs to the Department of Defense.

Huntsville compared favorably across more of these factors than any other community, providing a large, qualified workforce, quality schools, superior infrastructure capacity, and low initial and recurring costs. Additionally, Redstone Arsenal offered a facility to support the headquarters, at no cost, while the permanent facility is being constructed.

Albuquerque, New Mexico; Bellevue, Nebraska; Cape Canaveral, Florida; Colorado Springs, Colorado; and San Antonio, Texas, will remain reasonable alternative locations for the U.S. Space Command Headquarters.

The preferred and reasonable alternative locations were chosen from amongst 24 states that were evaluated as potential locations for hosting the headquarters.

The Department of the Air Force anticipates making a final decision for the location of U.S. Space Command Headquarters in spring 2023, pending the results from the required environmental impact analysis.

Colorado Springs, Colorado, remains the provisional headquarters until the permanent location is ready to support the mission.

P-S GAR administers initial round of COVID-19 vaccine to first responders

By Peterson-Schriever Garrison Public Affairs PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — 21st Medical Group clinic personnel began administering Peterson-Schriever Garrison’s first round of COVID-19 vaccinations to first responders, who are within the Defense Department’s Phase 1A priority group, Jan. 5.

In December, the DoD announced its deliberate and phased plan to distribute and administer the initial and subsequent allocations of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The vaccine is the result of Operation Warp Speed, a national initiative to accelerate the development, production and distribution of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.

“With the vaccine now available, we have our first opportunity to go on the offensive against COVID-19,” said Maj. Taylor Timberlake, P-S GAR public health emergency officer. “Based on initial studies, the vaccine showed to be quite effective against development of symptomatic COVID-19 as well as protecting against the more serious symptoms that had been placing people into the hospitals.

With widespread vaccination, we should see decreases in hospitalization rates and ideally against infection and transmission rates.”

Over the next several months, P-S GAR’s 21st MDG will continue to administer the

vaccine using a phased approach to ensure first responders, mission-essential personnel, deploying members and individuals with serious illnesses are the first to receive the vaccine.

With the first round of vaccinations underway, another obstacle medical professionals face is maintaining the integrity of the vaccine while also not wasting any doses.

“The COVID-19 Moderna vaccine is a delicate vaccine that requires strict storage and thawing procedures,” stated Lt. Col. Timothy J. Coker, P-S GAR chief of medical staff. “In addition, once a vial is punctured, we have to use all doses within six hours or we have to discard them. We are scheduling patients to better plan thawing procedures and utilizing a standby process to ensure zero waste of vaccine doses.”

There is no place in the Defense Department for those who espouse extremist views, DOD officials said today.

In wake of the siege of the U.S. Capitol January 6, Defense Department officials reemphasized the department has zero tolerance for service members or employees engaged in extremism, white supremacy or who belong to organizations that look to overturn the U.S Constitution.

"We … are doing everything we can to eliminate extremism in the Department of Defense," Gary Reed, the director for defense intelligence and counterintelligence, law enforcement and security, said. "DOD policy expressly prohibits military personnel from actively advocating supremacist, extremist or criminal gang doctrine, ideology or causes."

All military personnel, including those in the reserve components, have undergone background investigations and are subject to continuous evaluation, Reed said. "Simply put, we will not tolerate extremism of any sort in DOD," he said.

Reed statements come on the heels of the extraordinary memo from the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. That memo reminded service members of their oath to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic."

Domestic extremists invaded the U.S. Capitol on January 6, trying to derail Congress from counting the votes of the Electoral College. That mostly symbolic vote declared Joseph Biden won the 2020 election and will be the next president of the United States on Jan. 20.

Some in the crowd that broke into the Capitol were military veterans, and news reports said there may have been active duty members in the crowd as well.

The department works diligently to ensure that those who espouse extremist views do not end up in the services, senior DOD officials said speaking on background.

speaking to family, friends, teachers, workmates and more before they are allowed to pledge their oath to the Constitution, one official said. Still, some may get in and the department has continuous training and observation to detect these people.

"We work very closely with the FBI to identify any current or former military personnel engaged in domestic extremist behaviors," the official said.

Some military personnel are seduced by the violent militia behavior. "You've seen many examples of that in this country over the years of these militias becoming armed and active," the official said. "Then (there is) another domain within this phenomenon (of those) that are racially or ethnically motivated."

The rise of extremism in the general population affects the department, the official said. "There has been a resurgence of white supremacy and white nationalist activity over the past five or six years," he said. "The 2017 rally in Charlottesville was probably the largest gathering of white supremacy in this country in decades."

He noted that there are private studies that show since 2001, right-wing extremists are responsible for more deaths in the U.S. than any other type of extremist group.

These groups actively seek to recruit military members to their causes. Other groups "actually encourage their members to join the military, for purposes of acquiring skills and experience," the official said.

Officials said Acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller has ordered a review of all policies, laws or regulations concerning participation by service members in extremist organizations.

"This review will result in a report and recommendations concerning any initiatives we could put forward to more effectively prohibit extremists or hate group activity," the official said.

“There are those who may think that the Air Force core values – ‘Integrity First, Excellence in All We Do, and Service Before Self’ – are mere words,” she said. “After interacting with thousands of Airmen and Guardians, I know they are so much more. The Air Force Core Values truly are your Polaris, your North Star and guiding light.”

Brown and Raymond set the tone before Barrett spoke.

“Let me just say, we are a better Air Force because of Secretary Barrett’s passion, commitment, leadership and heart,” Brown said.

Each of them, Barrett said, deserves praise for “making outsized impacts on the Department of the Air Force and our nation.” She presented each of them the Department of Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the highest award the Department can bestow on civilians.

Like Barrett, each of those senior officials will serve until noon on Jan. 20 when President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office.

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Two Space Delta 9 enlisted members will begin their journey to become officers following their selection for the Senior Leader Enlisted Commissioning Program.

While U.S. Space Force Staff Sgt. Brandon Steele, 3rd Space Operations Squadron mission planner, and U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Seth Taylor, 1st SOPS cyber transport systems technician, are in SLECP they will pursue full-time degrees on active-duty status. Following completion, both will attend Officer Training School to earn their commissions.

Military members selected for SLECP are allowed to attend universities of their choice, online or in-person, to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in a major of their choice.

Steele will attend Middle Tennessee State University to complete his degree in Mechatronics Engineering, and Taylor plans to attend the University of Arizona to obtain a Geographical Information Systems degree.

“I had many reasons to apply [to SLECP]. My philosophy is: if you don’t try, the answer is always no,” Steele said.

Steele attributes his selection for SLECP to persistence and people he connected with.

“While building my package I ran into a lot of roadblocks, but I kept pushing back and seeking help from my mentors and friends,” Steele said.

U.S. Space Force Tech. Sgt. Robert Zwirn, 3rd SOPS flight chief, said the first time he met Steele, he immediately stood out as unique.

“He constantly looks for ways to bring people together, which has been refreshing during the pandemic,” Zwirn said.

“He is very passionate about his job and is always looking for ways to improve not only his job, but the lives of the people he works with, too.”

Zwirn said he could not think of a better choice for the SLECP than Steele.

“Steele is a natural leader,” he said, “I look forward to saluting him one day.”

Taylor said education is very important to him and SLECP will allow him to finish his degree.

“I knew that I wanted to serve as an officer,” Taylor said.

“I see my goal as a big step in both personal and professional development, and this program offers the solution to being

able to reach [these] goals.”

His leadership was a large part of him getting selected for the program, he said, because they allowed him to take lead on large projects that were atypical for a Senior Airman, which was Taylor’s rank until recently.

U.S. Space Force Tech Sgt. Shawn Tierney, 1st SOPS flight chief, explained how Taylor naturally leads others toward mission success. “[Taylor’s] work ethic shows his astute attention to detail, determination and drive to ensure that every task is completed to the best of his ability,” Tierney said.” Not once has he faltered with a task that should be near impossible and instead he has completed it with ease and professionalism.”

The “can-do” attitude Taylor carries rubs off on his teammates and pushes the mission in a direction not thought possible, Tierney said.

SLECP is a very unique opportunity with a competitive selection process.

“What I would say for those that are looking for an edge [in the SLECP selection], is to look for opportunities to build your [AF Form] 1206,” Steele said. “Find mentors who are good at writing bullets, and have them work with you on learning what makes good bullets and how to write them well yourself. Pour your heart into your essay and make sure when the board reads your essay, tell them what it means to you to be picked for the program.”

This year, candidates were required to write a one-page essay on their desire to serve, fill out a career-encompassing AF Form 1206, pass the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test, receive recommendation letters from leadership and provide military and school records to apply.

“Enlisted members interested in SLECP should inform their leadership to discuss their interest in commissioning,” Taylor said. “After this they will need to speak with their commander’s support section where they can get a point of contact with useful information on the program.”

The application may change year to year, so these requirements may change for 2021.

“SLECP is an amazing opportunity and I encourage any enlisted members who wish to commission to consider submitting an application for this program,” Taylor said.

Faces of Space – Capt. Ronald J. Miller

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Growing up in Syracuse, N.Y., Ronald Miller wasn’t the kind of kid who dreamed of joining the military.

The idea wasn’t on his radar, despite growing up with family members who served. Today, he is Capt. Ronald Miller, Space Delta 9, 3rd Space Operations Squadron mission assurance flight commander.

“It wasn’t until America was in Iraq and Afghanistan that I thought that [military service] was going to be my future,” Miller said.

Originally, Miller planned on enlisting in the U.S. Army after high school, but his uncle, who currently serves in the Army National Guard as a Chief Warrant Officer logistics manager, convinced Miller to go to college and earn a degree. Miller finished his degree and in 2011 enlisted with the U.S. Air Force. Most recently, he’s transitioned into the U.S. Space Force.

“I got a business degree in 2009, and I wanted to serve in some federal capacity as my grandfather had done after he left the Army,” Miller said.

Not long after, he applied to Officer Training School, but he was not chosen due to the competitive selection process. Nonetheless, Miller still wanted to serve, so he enlisted as a cryptologic language analyst in 2011. He continued on this career path until he was a senior airman.

“Once I hit my time of eligibility and time on station, I applied for OTS,” he said.

This time he was accepted and would commission in 2015.

“Shortly after commissioning, it was clear to me that I worried about things a lot more than everyone else,” Miller said candidly.

Miller struggles with generalized anxiety disorder. While he has been dedicated to his work throughout his life, he said the anxiety has negatively affected him, some of his relationships, and has even caused panic attacks.

“I felt like a hypocrite being an officer that was supposed to care for and inspire Airmen and Guardians to perform self-care and be open to addressing their mental health, and not do so myself,” said Miller. “I scheduled an appointment with my primary care manager and he confirmed that I failed to properly manage the stress in my life, and assured me that talking to a mental health professional was the right thing to do.”

Space Force Gen. David D. Thompson, the vice chief of space operations, provided virtual remarks, Jan. 13, 2021, to the Association of Old Crows, regarding space operations.

The Space Force is responsible for delivering space capability to the joint and coalition forces, including such items as navigation, timing, electromagnetic operations, orbital warfare, GPS, missile warning, satellite communications and launch space domain awareness.

Many of those capabilities have been forward deployed to the Middle East and other areas for some time, said Space Force Gen. David D. Thompson, the vice chief of space operations, who provided virtual remarks yesterday to the Association of Old Crows, regarding space operations.

To continue to provide these and future capabilities, it is important that the Space Force has an effective and digitally fluent workforce that's adequately trained and educated to operate systems and networks in the cyberspace domain in a cyber-secure manner, he said.

Thompson stressed the service's reliance on partnerships.

The Space Force relies on the commercial sector for innovative ideas, prototypes and experimentation, he said. They can design, develop, build and field them rapidly.

The idea of prototyping quickly involves some risk of failure. But even failure can lead to solutions that spiral development, he added.

Partnerships with the joint force, combatant commands and Defense Department agencies is also important, he said.

"We have enduring relationships with the National Reconnaissance Office and the rest of the intelligence community," he said. "We not only need to maintain those but deepen those as well, especially because we're now partners with them in the need to defend and protect these capabilities from threats."

The United States can no longer afford to go it alone when it comes to space capabilities, Thompson said.

"We see nations who want to grow and evolve their space capabilities, who want to use them for economic purposes, who want to use them for civil and public safety purposes, who also want to use them for national security purposes. We see a lot of common ground with them and a lot of common interests," he said.

Traditional Space Force partners have been Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, he said. Over the last few years, partnerships with France, Germany, Japan and South Korea have been expanding, along with a number of NATO nations such as Norway.

Partnerships with Brazil, Argentina, Chile and other nations, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region are also on the horizon.

Officials discuss COVID-19 vaccine deliveries and prioritization criteria

There's been significant progress in getting the COVID-19 vaccines out to the states, said Army Gen. Gustave F. Perna, the chief operating officer of Operation Warp Speed.

Thus far, 25 million doses of the Moderna and the Pfizer Inc.-BioNTech vaccines have been sent to 16,000 locations throughout the United States, he said.

Perna; Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; Dr. Moncef Slaoui, chief advisor to OWS; and, Alex M. Azar II, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, briefed the news media today on OWS. "The cadence of allocations, the cadence of orders, the cadence of picking and packing, the cadence of what's being shipped, has really become a remarkable feat for all of us, and the whole of America to be proud of," Perna said. "The result will be a safe and effective vaccine delivered to the American people."

OWS, in collaboration with pharmacies Walgreens and CVS have made significant progress in getting vaccines out to many of the 70,000 skilled nursing and assisted living facilities, he said.

In less than a month, 11,000 of those facilities have received the first dose of vaccines, he said, and 12,000 more are scheduled this week, with similar numbers for the weeks following.

Perna acknowledged the hard work of Moderna, Pfizer, distributor McKesson Corp., United Parcel Service, Inc. and FedEx Corp., who he said are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to deliver the vaccine in a timely manner.

Azar said that "we've seen substantial rises in American's confidence in these vaccines and interest in taking them."

Over the last several days, OWS has averaged around 700,000 reported vaccinations each day and OWS is on track to reach 1 million per day within about 10 days or less, he said. A total of 9 million first vaccinations have already been given.

By the end of next week, 95% of long-term care facilities will have had first dose vaccines administered, Azar added.

Azar said he's telling states to allow people 65 and older to now receive the vaccine, as well as those who are younger and who have a comorbidity with medical documentation.

"We're expanding the groups getting vaccinated because state restrictions on eligibility have obstructed speed and accessibility of administration," he explained.

"There was never a reason states needed to complete vaccinating all healthcare providers before opening vaccinations to older Americans and other vulnerable populations," he added.

Total Force Fitness is a fundamental element of the Department of Defense’s National Defense Strategy.

Helping to “Build a More Lethal Force,” Total Force Fitness focuses on a service member’s overall health over the duration of their career, including physical, environmental, spiritual, psychological, social, and financial components.

One of the most important factors to take into account when maintaining one’s overall fitness is physical environment, and the ability to perform tasks in a multitude of operational environments. That includes being provided with the correct equipment or reducing excessive exposure to natural elements, such as heat or cold, or chemical, biological, or radiological factors.

Environmental health within the DOD includes monitoring factors including temperature, air, water, and soil, as well as identifying issues that may impact military and civilian employees both on base and within local communities.

“Right now, we’re obviously concerned about cold weather impacts to our workers, and we want to make sure they’re using the right PPE (personal protective equipment) to be able to perform the mission. They have to be issued gloves and parkas and the types of equipment to be able to continue that mission,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Elisa Hammer, Environmental Health Program manager for the Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. “Likewise, if it’s hot weather, we want to make sure folks are implementing work-rest cycles, hydrating, and staying in the shade or maybe even recommend

ice packs if that’s not possible.”

Hammer explained how the COVID-19 pandemic has presented a new set of unique operational challenges.

She cited the examples of airmen on the flight line or sailors on the flight deck, where social distancing may not always be possible, but “masking up” may be an issue as well.

“In order for them to do their job in a COVID environment, they have to mask up,” Hammer said. “The problem with masking up is that, if it’s a disposable mask or a mask that could fly off, that’s a big problem.

That’s FOD (foreign object debris).”

Ideally, service members should always try to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance – wear a mask, maintain social distance, wash your hands frequently, and avoid crowds whenever possible, she stated.

For Hammer’s office, Total Force Fitness applies to work and play, within and outside of an environment in which COVID is a concern.

“We want to make sure that people are living, working, and playing in clean air,” Hammer said.

This includes minimizing risk factors associated with wildfires, sandstorms, and other local threats, and providing recommendations to base or deployed commanders on how to mitigate those risks.

“It could be something like contamination from a past fuel spill that’s still in the soil. We want to make sure that people who are running or jogging aren’t doing it on that part of an installation,” she said.

“What we really specialize in is trying to identify those threats and making sure there is no receptor, meaning no human being, on the other end of that threat that could be exposed to that contamination.”

Clean drinking water is also one of her primary concerns.

“Of course we want to provide clean water for drinking,” Hammer said. “We follow state, federal, DOD, and Air Force guidelines to make sure we’re complying with health standards.”

This is especially important in deployed locations, where bottled water or potable water tanks must be provided to avoid using local, untested sources.

Hammer said that she foresees some positive outcomes garnered from lessons learned from the pandemic.

“The CDC recommendations are temporary, but I think it changes us permanently. It’s really caused us to take a look at how to provide clean indoor air,” she said.

“I think a lot of people are thinking about the future and how we can prevent another COVID or something similar. What can be do about our facilities? How do we maintain or upgrade ventilation systems and what can we do differently? How much outdoor air needs to be introduced into the indoor environment? How can we improve circulation? There’s been a lot of good studies on modification of HVAC systems and industry standards are being modified and updated.”

Hammer said that if she could make only one recommendation regarding environmental health, it would be to get outside as much as possible.

Raymond noted Barrett’s influential role in helping create the Space Force from scratch. “Ma’am, from an idea to a reality, with you at the controls, the Space Force has taken many steps forward, each in rapid succession,” he said.

“Thank you for trusting and empowering all of our leaders to do whatever it takes to get this right for our nation,” Raymond said.

He also joked about having to adapt to Barrett’s at times Baroque vocabulary.

“Today, I’m armed with an arsenal of words to describe a secretary who has done so much for our nation and its newest service – she moves with alacrity, in the Pentagon, and on every adventure. Nothing and no one slows her down,” he said.

“Secretary Barrett is altruistic. And she is inimitable; I couldn’t think of anyone more uniquely suited to lead the Air Force and invent the Space Force.”

Barrett’s tenure includes some of the most historic and significant moments in Air Force history. She managed the U.S. Space Force’s successful birth and blossoming, making it the first new and independent branch of the military since 1947.

Barrett was secretary as well when Brown was named Air Force chief of staff, the first African American in history to become the highest-ranking military officer of any branch of the U.S. military.

She played a prominent role in efforts to address racial equity in the services and on quality of life matters such as ensuring adequate housing and professional opportunities

for military spouses.

Finally, she was the first secretary to lead the service during a pandemic.

She and her team helped drive forward efforts to make the Air Force digitally connected to the joint force, known as Joint All-Domain Command and Control. As part of that effort, the Advance Battlement Management System, which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to simultaneously connect warfighters in the air, land, sea, space and cyber domains, was part of several successful large-scale tests.

They helped further the development of the B-21 Raider, the next generation long-range strike bomber, as well as seeing to the continued modernization of the aging nuclear deterrent. (The Air Force is responsible for two of the three legs of the nuclear force, those launched from air and from land.)

At Barrett’s direction, the team spearheaded the first formal Arctic Strategy for the Department of the Air Force, a significant milestone that outlines the Department’s roles and priorities in a strategically important region where the Air Force, and now the Space Force, have maintained a major presence for decades.

Under her stewardship, the Department’s X-37B spaceplane won the prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy for advancing technology that pushes “the boundaries of flight and space exploration.”

Barrett said that ensuring the Air and Space Forces fulfilled requirements outlined in the National Defense Strategy served as her overarching guide in leading the Department and for establishing priorities.

Barrett pressed forward with streamlining and improving the Air Force’s often bulky and inefficient acquisition process. That was one of Wilson’s prime focuses.

“In this as in almost everything, what I did was not invent something new but to really build from the great things that had been established before my arrival,” she said. “So on the acquisition side, that meant allowing the

continued good work Dr. Will Roper as he did things like Pitch Days and working with AFWERX to invite, inspire and reward innovation.”

Barrett also embraced – and expanded – change across the Air Force and Space Force that former Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson and former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein, championed such as accelerating the department’s new thinking on race, diversity and quality of life. She also emphasized moving with speed to aggressively address the Air and Space Forces requirements in the NDS. “To have the United States Air Force to be one of the top innovative places – the only government institution – to be on the list of innovative places to work, that’s how we modernize,” she said, referring to AFWERX being named as one of Fast Company’s Top 100 Workplaces for Innovators.

Not lost on her was that all these efforts took place in 2020.

“All of this is happening with the overlay of COVID(-19), with unprecedented forest fires (across the West and Southwest), civil unrest, hurricanes running through the alphabet and starting again,” she said.

Through it all, Barrett said she exploited and relied on a singular truth.

“There is one eye-watering constant across the Air and Space Forces: the universality that these are good people,” she said in her remarks Jan. 14. “I have worked at numerous businesses, I have been a member of dozens of groups, and I have been part of myriad organizations, but I have never been part of any entity where there is such consistency of good intent and effort to be the best, together.

“I leave confident that the United States of America is safe and secure because of you – the brave men and women who stand the watch, guard the perimeter, ensure free and open access to space, and defend democracy from the sky,” she said.

the strength to reach out for professional help.

“I cope with regular sessions with my psychologist and focus on the principals of ‘Acceptance and Commitment Therapy,’ which teach you to not regret or fight invasive and persistent thoughts,” Miller said.

“I am constantly mindful of aligning my actions with my personal values, which is the cornerstone to me not overthinking things.”

One of his greatest coping mechanisms for anxiety has been riding his motorcycle.

“When [I’m] riding, there is nothing to be concerned with other than the here and now, including the wind on your face and the sights and smells of the road,” he said. “I find myself to be most at peace with my lack of thoughts when I am on the road.”

Miller also said that being in the U.S. Air Force has helped him cope as well. The structure that military service has helps reduce the amount of decision-making he has to do day to day, giving him a clearer and easier path and helping him maintain focus. Overcoming these struggles has also helped mold him into a better and more understanding leader.

“I take leadership to heart and always want to improve my leadership abilities,” Miller said. “I learn from leaders I have met in the past. That way, I can learn how to best interact with people, inspire and influence.”

According to Master Sgt. Matthew Harrell, 3rd SOPS mission assurance flight chief, Miller is more than just a leader — he excels at his job in every aspect.

“Captain Miller is extremely driven and work-focused,” said Harrell. “His ability to lead, multitask and still manage to track all items is above most officers I have seen in my career. Captain Miller’s capacity to listen

to guidance from those around him prior to making final decisions shows his ability to lead from the front.

Miller said he gained his values from his grandfather, who served in the U.S. Army as a radio intercept operator. He was raised by his grandfather, who also instilled discipline, order, and the value of family.

“Whether it is caring [for my family], providing in times of need or being there for them, my grandpa is truly the model example of all of that.” Miller said. “He inspires me to be the best version of himself.”

Miller’s family includes Mikaela, his wife of three years, and their cat. Miller said when he does have children, he’d encourage them to pursue military service, be it for education or for a career.

In his off time, Miller likes to go out to yard sales, auctions and thrift stores to collect treasures and antiques. His favorite find is a five-foot wide piece of art depicting aerial combat by the artist Roy Lichtenstein, who taught at the school in Miller’s hometown. He said the art is like bringing a piece of home with him wherever he moves.

“I’ve recently gotten into woodworking,” Miller said.

“I want to get into more of restoring things, just finding it at a yard sale or thrift store, something someone threw away or wants to get rid of.”

Miller started collecting tools for woodworking when the COVID-19 pandemic started because most everything else he liked doing was shut down.

“I am drawn to making things because I am in complete control of the entire process,” Miller said. “I can take however long I want to make it just right, and whatever turns out is a direct result of the effort I put into it.”

His favorite thing to make while woodworking is wooden pens.

“I am most proud of a pen I made for my grandpa, because he really was impressed that I was able to make something like that,” Miller said.

Miller said hobbies get his mind off of things during his off time, but when he struggles at work he thinks of his older brother, Mike. A month before Miller enlisted, his brother passed away due to complications with HIV. “Mike was a few years older than me and my sister, and since we were raised by our single mom, he was essentially the man of the house and kept us all in check,” Miller said.

Miller said his brother was a happy person, so almost every memory with him was a good one.

“The memory I think of most fondly was in his final hours when he held my hand and told me how proud he is of me and that he knew I would make something of myself,” Miller said.

When Miller reflects on his brother being so strong at his weakest, it gets him through his own tough times.

“In my head, I associated his passing with the beginning of my military service, since they roughly happened at the same time,” Miller said. “Whenever I’m struggling on the last lap of a [physical training] test, I look back and see him at his sickest and remember his strengths, and that helps me get through it.”

Miller hopes sharing his story will help others feel comfortable if they want to talk about the loss of someone close to them or something that’s impacted them on a personal level.

In the next 10 years Miller said he plans to keep on his journey as a space officer, though he was already making plans for retirement.

“In 20 years, I would hope to be working in a small woodworking shop that I would like to own,” Miller said. “In 30 years, I’ll be snuggled down with my family on the East Coast somewhere with a big barn and a much larger woodworking shop.”
