JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. (AFNS) — President Trump signed into law Dec. 20 the sprawling, $738 billion defense bill, making history by creating the Space Force as a stand-alone, sixth branch of the U.S. military and guaranteeing for the first time 12 weeks of paid parental leave for federal workers.

“Today [also] marks another landmark achievement as we officially inaugurate the newest branch of the military [United States Space Force], this is a very big and important moment,” said President Donald J. Trump.

The Space Force and parental leave were two of the most high-profile elements of the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a law running 1,976 pages that

serves as comprehensive, annual blueprint for military spending and policy priorities and operating standards. The law touches almost every corner of the military and beyond since it is one of the rare pieces of legislation that regularly passes Congress and is signed into law.

In addition to Space Force and paid parental leave, the law calls for a 3.1 percent pay raise for active-duty personnel; it prohibits Turkey from participating in the F-35 program as long as it continues to possess a Russian-made missile system. It prescribes active-duty strength for all the services while also carrying provisions to improve military housing and health care, purchasing 60 F-35s for the Air Force and

thousands of other directives and recommendations.

Trump mentioned a number of the law’s signature items in a 20-minute address in a hangar at Andrews before signing the legislation into law. He was surrounded by hundreds of military personnel, members of Congress and senior leaders from the Pentagon including the Joint Chiefs as well as Air Force Secretary Barbara M. Barrett and Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. Air Force Gen. Jay Raymond, who was named the first Chief of Space Operations, was also present.

Read the fine print—don’t get caught waiving your rights

By Capt. Jovan S. Legister | 21ST SPACE WING STAFF JUDGE ADVOCATE’S OFFICE PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Before signing a lease or contract, ensure that you don’t unknowingly waive your rights under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA).

The SCRA is a federal law enacted in 2003 which restricts or limits actions against military personnel serving on active duty. The Act was designed to allow active duty service members, especially those who are deployed, to “devote their energy to the defense needs of the Nation.”

For many years, SCRA has been a source of protection for military members. Some of the more popular benefits for service members include early termination of residential leases after receiving orders for a permanent change of station or deployment, and early termination of automobile leases if ordered to PCS from the United States to an overseas location, or vice versa.

Although these protections have been cod-

ified in federal statute, it is possible to waive these rights when entering into leases and similar contractual agreements. There are specific requirements for the waiver to be effective, but service members should exercise caution when signing residential lease agreements to ensure they are not signing away SCRA rights.

If you sign a residential or automobile lease which includes a waiver of your SCRA rights, you could end up paying thousands of dollars over several months for an apartment or vehicle that you no longer live in or use. In such cases, your obligations under these contracts will most likely continue until the contract expires or when and if the landlord decides to release you from your obligations.

— With the Holiday season comes family and friends visiting personnel who live on Peterson Air Force Base. To help us get your family members on base, please review the procedures outlined below.

Any authorized card holder — Department of Defense military personnel, DoD civilians, military retirees, or adult dependents — are authorized to sponsor visitors to have unescorted entry onto Peterson AFB. There are three different methods.

The first is to physically meet their guest at the Visitor Control Center during duty hours, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and sponsor them for a visitor pass, which will allow them to enter the base for the duration of their visit (not to exceed 60 days). The guest will need to produce valid photo identification so the VCC clerk can conduct a National Criminal Identification Check before the clerk will issue a pass. The guest will also need to show proof of vehicle registration and insurance if they are going to be driving their personally owned vehicle onto base. When the VCC is closed,

personnel at the west gate can issue a pass for up to 72 hours.

The second method is widely known as the trusted traveler procedure. The base commander has authorized card holders to vouch for all vehicle occupants entering the installation and to escort them on base without identity proofing, vetting or pass issuance. Guests within the vehicle must have a photo identification.

Escorts are responsible for all actions of all occupants in their vehicle or pedestrians if walking, as well as for meeting all security requirements. Personnel escorted within the installation are not issued an installation pass and must stay within the physical custody of the escort, the sponsor’s residence, or the adjacent, immediate public areas of the sponsor’s residence.

Escorted individuals must remain in the control of the escort.

The third is for a card holder to report to the VCC and complete a pre-visit request. Within the next 30 days, the guest may then report to the VCC to receive a visitor pass.

Staying safe in the winter months does not just mean avoiding slips, trips and falls or using sound risk management when clearing snow and ice. Having your car prepared for bad weather can be just as important for your safety as having a jacket and gloves. Here are a few things the Colorado Department of Transportation recommends having to be prepared to drive in winter weather: tires with tread depth greater than 3/16 of an inch and are adequate for the conditions, plenty of windshield wiper fluid, good wiper blades, plenty of fuel in the tank, a sturdy scraper/snowbrush, flares/ reflectors, and a first aid kit.

By Staff writer | 21ST SPACE WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Department of Defense has announced expanded Commissary, Exchange, Morale, Welfare and Recreation, and physical base access for eligible veterans and primary family caregivers beginning Jan. 1, 2020.

With the increased amount of vehicle traffic and personnel that Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado is expected to witness, Airmen and their families are asked to report any suspicious activity to the Peterson AFB and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Colorado Law Enforcement Desk.

Suspicious activity can be considered any observed behavior that could indicate crime.

Example indicators include: •• Unusual items or situations: Vehicles parked in odd locations, unattended packages or luggages left unattended, open windows or doors that are usually closed, or other out-of-the-ordinary situations.

•• Eliciting information: Persons question-

ing individuals at a level beyond curiosity about a building’s purpose, operations, security procedures, and/or personnel, shift changes, etc.

•• Observation/surveillance: Someone pays unusual attention to facilities or buildings beyond a casual or professional interest, including extended loitering without explanation (particularly in concealed locations); unusual, repeated and/or prolonged observation of a building (e.g., with binoculars, video or photo camera); taking notes or measurements; counting paces; sketching floor plans, etc.

2018 and for whom bringing it to reality was a personal priority, offered a rationale for the first new branch of the military since 1947.

“There are grave threats to our national security,” said Trump. “American superiority in space is absolutely vital.

The Space Force will help us deter aggression and control the ultimate high ground.”

He was echoed by Secretary of Defense Mark Esper who said, “We are at the dawn of a new era for our Nation’s Armed Forces. The establishment of the U.S. Space Force is an historic event and a strategic imperative for our Nation. Space has become so important to our way of life, our economy and our national security that we must be prepared as a Nation to protect it from hostile actions,” said Secretary of Defense, Mark T. Esper. “Our Military Services have created the world’s best space capabilities. Now is the time for the U.S. Space Force to lead our Nation in preparing for emerging threats in an evolving space environment. This new service will help ensure we are postured to deter aggression, defend our national interests and outpace potential adversaries.”

For many in the Air Force-heavy crowd at Andrews, the Space Force and the historic moment were particularly meaningful.

Barrett, for example, has made creating Space Force her highest priority since be-

coming Air Force secretary in October.

Now is the time for a separate service totally focused on organizing, training and equipping for space, she said. While once a wide open “domain” reserved only for the United States and Russia, space today has become far more congested and crowded with other nations and commercial interests actively operating in space.

At the same time space has also become a crucial factor in protecting national security and supporting activities of everyday life ranging from cell phone service, GPS, banking and the ability to easily and instantly transmit data anywhere in the world.

As such, the United States says space must be protected and preserved and that the United States’ superiority in space maintained. “The U.S. Space Force will help the DoD meet the challenges of the future security environment,” a Department of Defense statement says.

“Space is integral to national security and our way of life, and this service will posture us to compete, deter, and win in an era of great power competition.”

By creating a new, separate service with a dedicated purpose, the United States will maintain space superiority, even as space becomes more crowded and contested. The new defense law also directs that the Space Force “shall provide the freedom of operation in, from, and to space, while providing prompt and sustained space operations.”

Julemand comes to town— Thule AB gives back to community

Julemand is Danish for “Christmas Man” and is the equivalent of Santa Claus.

Operation Julemand an annual humanitarian program that gives back to the local Greenlandic community that is organized and supported by personnel stationed at Thule Air Base, Greenland, and is the largest community outreach event Thule AB conducts each year.

The Operation Julemand Foundation has been conducting outreach events for the children of Greenland since 1959 when

two Airmen began Operation Santa Claus, since renamed Operation Julemand. It began with providing Christmas gifts to local children, but over the years has expanded to support programs for children, youth and the elderly. Gifts are donated by Americans, Danes, Canadians and Greenlanders, while Air Greenland donates helicopter flights to deliver the presents and provides a sleigh ride to Santa and his helpers from Thule.

commander, the 10-person Operation Julemand committee, led by the base Chapel, doubled the amount of gifts collected this year. In the spirit of such a momentous achievement, Chaplain Capt. Matthew Gallo, Thule AB installation chaplain, and Staff Sgt. Steven Whitley, non-commissioned officer of Thule AB Chapel, ensured everyone on the committee was flown to Qaanaaq over the course of several months so they could meet the children and parents in the town and have a better understanding of the lives they are impacting.

14th Air Force Redesignated as Space Operations Command

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — By order of Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett, effective Dec. 20, 2019, Fourteenth Air Force was officially redesignated as Space Operations Command.

Air Force military and civilian personnel previously assigned to Fourteenth Air Force are now assigned to SpOC by virtue of the redesignation action.

The SpOC is directly supporting the U.S. Space Force’s mission to protect the interests of the United States in space; deter aggression in, from and to space; and conduct space operations.

On Dec. 20, 2019, U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, officially establishing the USSF as the sixth branch of the U.S. armed forces.

In accordance with a redesignation memorandum for record signed by Barrett, Maj. Gen. John E. Shaw, former Commander, Fourteenth Air Force, was redesignated as Commander, Space Operations Command; in addition to Shaw’s role as U.S. Space Command’s Combined Force Space Component Commander.

The SpOC provides space capabilities such as Space Domain Awareness, space electronic warfare, satellite communications, missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, environmental monitoring, military Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance, navigation warfare, command and control, and Positioning, Navigation and Timing, on behalf of the USSF for USSPACECOM and other Combatant Commands.

“It is an honor and privilege to lead the U.S. Space Force’s Space Operations Command. Every day, all around the planet, people count on us to make a difference – to provide a space-enabled combat edge to the warfighters that keep our country, our Allies, and our partners safe. We will not let them down,” said Shaw.

Additional details about SpOC will be available in early 2020 – highlighting Space Operations Command’s critical roles and responsibilities in support of national security objectives.

Barrett, Air Force leaders applaud Space Force’s formal creation

By Staff writer Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett praised the formal creation of the U.S. Space Force Dec. 20, identifying it as a critical capability in defending the nation and pledging that the first new branch of the military since 1947 would be established with speed and clarity of purpose.

“The launch of an independent U.S. Space Force propels us into a new era dedicated to protecting U.S. national interests and security in space,” Barrett said. “We will work with (Department of Defense) leaders, Congress, our joint military teammates, industry and our national security partners as we establish the Space Force to ensure continued American leadership in space.”

Bringing the Space Force into reality has been a top priority for Barrett since becoming the secretary of the Air Force in October. “An agile, lean and technologically-advanced force of talented professionals will now focus singularly on space,” she said. “The president and Congress gave us a job to do, and we are moving out.”

In accordance with the National Defense Authorization Act signed into law Dec. 20 by President Donald J. Trump, the U.S. Space Force is the sixth branch of the United States military.

While independent, it is nested within the Department of the Air Force, much as the Marine Corps is connected to the Department of the Navy.

By creating a new, separate service with a dedicated purpose, the U.S. will maintain space superiority, even as space becomes more crowded and contested. The NDAA also directs the Space Force “shall provide the freedom of operation in, from and to space, while providing prompt and sustained space operations.”

“What an opportunity to be here at the creation of this new service,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David L. Goldfein. “Now we must get to work building a service focused on space operations, created on a foundation of trust and confidence and with its own unique space culture. I am honored to be part of this historic moment and eager to work with my teammate and fellow joint chief, the chief of Space Operations.”

Space is essential to America’s security and prosperity, so much so that a branch of the military dedicated to its defense and “rules-based” future is required.

The National Defense Strategy clearly articulates that U.S. adversaries have turned space into a warfighting domain and continue to threaten U.S. national interests. The Space Force will organize, train and equip forces to address these growing threats. The creation of the U.S. Space Force represents a monumental change in the nation’s warfighting capabilities and the ability to fight and win future conflicts.

“With the establishment of the Space Force we elevate the ‘organize, train and equip’ function consistent with the criticality of the space domain,” said Gen. Jay Raymond, commander of U.S. Space Command. “The Space Force will deliver the capabilities U.S. Space Command needs to control and exploit space for national advantage.”

The Air Force, along with the DoD, has been preparing for this day. By design, the Space Force will be agile, lean and mission focused. It will minimize bureaucratic overhead and maximize focus on operations, intelligence and fielding of advanced capabilities.

In addition, the Space Force will leverage the Air Force for more than 75% of its enabling functions to reduce cost and avoid duplication. For example, this will include capabilities ranging from logistics, base operating support, civilian personnel management, business systems, IT support and audit agencies.

The Department of the Air Force has a proud history and long-standing record of providing the best space capabilities in the world, according to department officials.

The Space Force will maintain that competitive edge and adapt to emerging challenges. At the same time, the Space Force will have its own budget, culture and ethos, doctrine, warfare development, training and personnel development.

WGS-11+ Leverages Commercial Technology to Deliver Twice the Capability SMC PUBLIC AFFAIRS

LOS ANGELES AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS)-11+ is a Space and Missile Systems Center Pacesetter for the rapid application and fielding of commercial technology. The SMC Production Corps and Portfolio Architect’s Mission System Integration team jointly championed a successful first-ever, cross-corps Systems Requirements Review (SRR) to help the Government and Boeing reach a mutual agreement on a system performance specification to satisfy warfighter needs quickly. The WGS program office, leveraging enterprise partnerships and a collaborative culture with Army, Navy, and Boeing systems engineers, worked closely together to ensure the system’s technical baseline will maximize value to the warfighter on an aggressive 5-year schedule. The WGS team, embedded at the Boeing facility, has been able to apply lessons learned from extensive testing performed by a similar commercial space program utilizing the same digital pay-

load technologies. With SRR complete, the WGS-11+ team has initiated production and prototyping of Pathfinder hardware units to reduce risk for the final production build on its “Road to Preliminary Design Review” campaign.

WGS capability evolves significantly with each generation of spacecraft. WGS-11+ adapts innovative technologies to provide more coverage beams, more beam formed bandwidth and more frequency re-use than heritage systems. WGS-11+ will be capable of forming unique coverage areas anywhere within the field of regard—each sized optimally as mission needs demand. The satellite will have much greater inherent resilience to threats than prior vehicles.

“The resilient design will deliver Combatant Commanders twice the mission capability through contested environments—improving capacity and coverage to soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines.” said Col. John Dukes, chief of the Geosynchronous/Polar Division, SMC Production Corps.

The ability to provide seamless broadband interconnectivity for X-band and Ka-band users, and features to operate in a contested environment – provide the global responsiveness for US and Allied Forces to support missions ranging from warfighting to humanitarian relief efforts.

“WGS-11+ enhances operational flexibility and performance to better serve the warfighter—the system will provide

more coverage beams than the entire existing WGS constellation,” said Dr. Mark Peterson, WGS Aerospace Platform lead.

Additionally, the system remains a viable government host platform for rapid prototyping and additional enhancements with mission partners are being considered. “We’re excited to deliver this game-changing capability to the warfighter,” said Maj. Brandon Castillo, WGS-11+ program manager.

By Ray Bowden | U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY PUBLIC AFFAIRS U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. — Air Force Academy cadets are known for making advances with their research and scientific discoveries but today, the effect they’ll have in space just got a lot bigger, with the Defense Department unveiling its new U.S. Space Force.

“Today marks a historic day for our nation and our Air Force as the President signed the bill establishing the Space Force,” said the Academy’s superintendent, Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria, Dec. 20. “Just as we celebrate September 18th as our Air Force's birthday, members of the Space Force will celebrate December 20th as their day. This is an exciting time for our nation and for our Academy.”

Silveria said the U.S. Space Force will fall under the Secretary of the Air Force similar to how the Commandant of the Marine Corps reports directly to the Secretary of the Navy.

“How our Academy fits into the development of this young service has yet to be determined, but we have and will continue to posture our Academy as the premier institution for the development of space professionals and space-minded joint warriors,” he said.

The general said the Academy’s heritage now includes “the inspiring task of molding the Space Force.”

“There is no one better equipped for this task than our Airmen and our Air Force Academy,” he said.

FalconSAT The Academy already ensures its cadets are thinking about space from tactical, strategic and operational levels by the time they graduate.

One premier feature of the Academy’s efforts in space is the school’s FalconSAT Program. In fact, if you catch a glimmer in the sky on a clear winter night, you might have spotted the Air Force Academy’s FalconSAT-6 zooming through its orbit, 357 miles above the Earth.

The 400-pound satellite launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California aboard a Space-X rocket in December 2018.

“It’s healthy and transmitting data. We’re providing data for all payloads to our customers,” said Lt. Col. Dan Showalter. “Typically, if a satellite survives a year, it’s good for threeto-five years.”

Showalter is an assistant professor of astronautics who manages a team of more than 40 cadets who work on satellite engineering design, building and testing, and more than 80 cadets who support on-orbit operations.

Today, several cadets are monitoring FalconSAT-6 as it tests thrusters and other equipment designed to transform space technology.

“There are very few opportunities for undergraduate students to work so closely with engineers and ultimately, have so much influence on the mission,” said Cadet 1st Class Shelby Watson, an astronautical engineering major who has controlled more than 100 FalconSAT-6 passes over the Academy.

“We typically get four 12-minute passes per day over the Academy,” Showalter said.

“Each pass is crewed by three cadets, including Shelby.”

Cadet 1st Class Bridger Barker is an economics major who tracks satellite data. He said cadets are involved in the entire life-cycle of a satellite.

“We take great pride in this and understand the huge responsibility we take on,” he said.

to provide cadets with experiential, hands-on learning opportunities with the latest space technology.

“It’s like an engineering internship,” Showalter said. “We fly experimental technology for the Air Force to evaluate its performance on-orbit. We’re performing technology demonstrations for the Air Force.”

Barker said the vibe in the lab is professional but fun.

“We all have similar interests and work well together as a team,” he said. “My favorite aspect of the lab’s environment is the senior enlisted leadership and [civilian] contractors who develop us not only as operators, but as leaders.”

FalconSAT-7 launched this year to test a solar telescope and senior cadets are working

to get FalconSAT-8 into orbit.

“Currently, FalconSAT-8 is preparing for launch and FalconSAT-X is being designed, tested and built,” said Cadet 1st Class Johann Johnson, an astronautical engineering major.

“This is where cadets in the Class of 2020 are spending their time and effort.”

FalconSAT-3, launched in 2007 to teach cadets to control satellites in orbit, is no longer a DOD resource. It’s been used by amateur radio hobbyists as a digital storing system since 2017.

The Academy’s space program, established in the 80s, consists of aerospace experts, mechanics and engineers. Johnson said the FalconSAT program serves as an academic platform for an array of aerospace industry and DOD experiments.

USSPACECOM expands key allied space partnerships through multi-nation operations

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — National security in the space domain continues to expand its operational coordination and capabilities between the U.S. Space Command and allied nations. A multi-national space force, a strategic defense partnership between several nations including the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, operate together at the Combined Space Operations Center. Additional nations collaborating on space operations with the CSpOC include Germany, France and New Zealand.

USSPACECOM maintains strong international alliances and partnerships to conduct operations in and through the space domain. Given the increasing complexity of the space environment, the coalition provides a unified response to a variety of threats presented in the warfighting domain of space. The CSpOC is primed to conduct such operations.

The CSpOC, which reports to the Combined Force Space Component Command – a subordinate command to the newly re-established USSPACECOM – executes the operational command and control of space forces to achieve theater and global objectives. It operates 24-hours a day, seven days a week, continuously coordinating, planning, integrating, synchronizing and executing space operations; providing tailored space effects on demand to support combatant commanders; and accomplishing national security objectives.

Recently, New Zealand space operations representatives attended CFSCC’s weekly Products Brief (CPB), the operational forum where Coalition space strategy is synchronized, and CFSCC’s Master Space Plan and Combined Space Tasking Order are communicated and approved. This was the first time the CPB occurred at the truly “Five Eyes” level of integration. Five Eyes is a military term used to describe intelligence sharing and collaboration between Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the United States.

The second historic milestone occurred when Deputy Director of CSpOC, Group Captain Darren Whiteley – a Royal Air Force officer from the United Kingdom – signed the weekly Combined Space Tasking Order. It was the first time a coalition partner signed the order under Operation Olympic Defender (OOD) tasking the CFSCC subordinate units. OOD, which is a multi-national effort intended to strengthen deterrence, optimize space operations, improve mission assurance, enhance resilience and optimize space assets by engaging with U.S. government partners and allies, involves sharing information, data and resources. It is a method for partners to leverage and synchronize existing capabilities. CSpOC stood up in July 2018 to create a uni-

Adding allies to OOD, builds upon the success of the CSpOC and enhances the overall command’s capability to collectively defend vital assets in space.

“Allied partnerships are critical to defending our assets at home and in the space domain,” Whiteley said. “The threat is expanding and international collaboration is essential to strengthen deterrence against hostile actors. Through these

partnerships we are able to expand the depth and multiply the effects we can have to those evolving threats.”

Retaining U.S. and allied space superiority requires a combined approach. USSPACECOM’s existing partnerships with allied and commercial entities are foundational to its combat effectiveness. Through these partnerships with the CSpOC, USSPACECOM will continue to broaden and strengthen its mission throughout its assigned Area of Responsibility, but most especially within USSPACECOM’s subordinate commands.

Jax — which specializes in sustainably sourced seafood, being the first Colorado restaurant certified by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch — also has locations in Boulder (the original spot), Fort Collins, Lodo Denver, Glendale, and Kansas City.

This Colorado Springs location opens Tuesday, Jan. 7, with the first brunch service beginning Sunday, Jan. 12. I got a media preview on Jan. 3, with a mini tasting and tour through the significantly overhauled facility with chef/ founder Dave Query. (Random related fun fact: I served and shift managed in this spot circa 1999/2000 when I was in college and it was Il Vicino — so this tour for me was more of a “oh, the brewery used to be there, and fermentation tanks here ... how the hell did you get the pervasive wood-oven pizza smell out?” type tour.)

Back in June, Query told me he’s been waiting for the right Springs location for 20 years, saying: “We’re excited to have found a location we think suits the brand and allows us to do something in the way we do it well — which is small.”

Considering that well-established brand, he speaks modestly as we sit together in the new space. “We don’t see ourselves as a big fish in a small pond; we work twice as hard to gain our cred,” he tells me. “We’ve got proving to do.”

Executive Chef Sheila Lucero joins us for a moment, while dropping off stellar samples of Oysters Rockefeller (traditional style) and oysters chargrilled in Creole butter with garlic and parsley and grana padano cheese. She serves on the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch’s Blue Ribbon Task Force, networking with others around the U.S. on sustainability concerns.

Jax’s menu features a “note on sourcing” on its back page that explains their ethics and practices.

Guests can get in on the action via the Jax Oyster Club, through which you can order from the same providers and pick up oysters at Jax for dining at home.

Something I may circle back on later is any extra significance of Jax’s arrival on the scene — call it Boulderization maybe? — as in late 2018 I opined about the Denverization of the Springs with the arrival of Denver Biscuit Company and Dos Santos.

More recently, I caught all kinds of holy hell from some Indy readers when I used the opening of The Roswell to examine the current state of the Springs food scene, questioning if we were making any backward progress (concurrent with other hopeful openings, in this case.)

I’ll conclude here by simply saying Jax will be one to watch in 2020, and the early samplings show a lot of promise.
