More than 90 percent of downtown businesses are locally owned, according to the Downtown Partnership.

Many of those retailers rely heavily on holiday sales, said Sarah Humbargar, vice president of development services for the Downtown Partnership.

At least two pop-up businesses, New Earth Beads and Sweet Addict Bakery, will offer special deals during downtown’s Small Business Saturday event. The first 10 customers at New Earth Beads will receive a free “swag bag” with their purchase, and Sweet Addict Bakery will offer a full menu along with a caramel fountain for hungry holiday shoppers.

Residents also can park for free in the city’s three parking garages on weekends during the holiday season, Humbargar said.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for shoppers to come downtown,” she said.

In Old Colorado City, vendors will set up from 10 a.m. — 4 p.m., with the annual Christmas Stroll beginning at 5 p.m. Residents can get a jump start on their Christmas shopping at business like the Michael Garman Museum and Gallery, which is offering 20 to 70 percent off hundreds of handmade sculptures during its annual holiday sale.

A host of mom-and-pop merchants will also peddle their wares down the road in Manitou Springs from 7 — 11 a.m. Much like its neighbors, Manitou Springs offers its shoppers unique gift ideas not found online or in department stores.

and family,” Humbargar said.

However, shopping at locally owned businesses has econmic effects that reach far beyond the holiday season, Humbargar said. For every $100 spent at a local business, $68 remains in the city — compared with $43 of every $100 spent at a chain retailer, according to the Downtown Partnership.

“A very small percentage of your money stays in the community when you’re shopping at a big-box store,” Humbargar said. “When you’re supporting local small businesses, those dollars stay local. The more dollars you spend in local stores, the more of those dollars stay here.”

Consumers often hear of “voting with your dollars,” Humbargar said, adding spending money locally is one of the best ways to have a voice in determining the kinds of businesses people want in the community.

“There is something to be said about voting with your dollars,” Humbargar said. “It’s a great way to show you care about your community and what kind of businesses you want to see there.”

And you can help your neighbors and friends flourish this holiday season while also sending your faraway loved ones a little piece of your new home.

“By shopping local, you are making a statement,” Humbargar said.

Local business sells vintage movie, music posters

It was 1983 when the third installment of George Lucas’ blockbuster franchise was scheduled for its release.

Hundreds of U.S. theaters already had received “Revenge of the Jedi” posters when then filmmaker elected to change the movie’s name.

“He decided jedi don’t seek revenge because they are supposed to be on the good side and changed it to ‘Return of the Jedi,’” said Mitch Ryan, the operations manager of Nerdgasm Emporium. “However, they had produced all the marketing items, and we have a copy of the original poster that was sent out to like 200 theaters.”

The printed poster — a must-have for “Star Wars” collectors — is among the store’s more than 100,000 vintage and new movie, television, music and art posters, Ryan said.

“Our bread and butter is obviously posters,” he said. “This business has existed in some form for almost 25 years with three different owners — all of which were hoarders of posters.”

Some of the posters date back to the ’60s and ’70s, including concert art for The Beatles’ “A Hard Day’s Night” album and tour.

“That one is actually only $70,” Ryan said.

“The originals — the way I price them is, I get on eBay and look at the prices there and then go like $10 to $50 lower.”

Most of the store’s poster stock is available on its eBay page except for originals because of the cost of shipping and insuring them.

Ryan changed how the posters were being priced and shipped after coming on board about a year ago.

“They had a flat rate shipping set up and were only averaging about 12 poster sales a day,” he said. “When you are shipping posters all over the world, you should have more than 12 a day.”

In addition to posters, Nerdgasm sells window art, to include from the “Deadpool” franchise.

He started offering free shipping, which helped increase daily sales to between 60 to 70 posters.

“I realized what was wrong and fixed it,” Ryan said. “And now, in my opinion, we are selling more along the lines of what we should be.”

In July, Ryan convinced the owner to change the business’ name and open a storefront to showcase some of the more valuable posters. The store also began selling a variety of entertainment collectibles and toys.

“We realized we needed to be a little more encompassing than just posters, so that’s where the emporium and collectibles part comes in,” Ryan said. “We also are adding

an area in the corner that will have local artists’ work for sale.”

So far, Ryan says the biggest challenge he’s faced is just trying to keep the doors open.

“We technically shouldn’t be in business,” he said. “When I took it over, it was to help liquidate, but I saw and see what can be here and pushed for there to be something more and luckily the owner was all about it.”

Beyond marketing on Facebook, the store’s large window art, which includes “Hulk” and “Deadpool” characters, also helps bring in new customers.

“We are off the beaten path a little but there still is a lot of people who drive on this road,” Ryan said. “We’ve been getting all walks of

Ryan also plans family-style gaming nights for games such as “Dungeons and Dragons,” “Magic: The Gathering,” “Pokemon” and “Cards Against Humanity” for adult-only evenings.

Baker blends science, culinary art to create French pastries

At first blush, it might seem that biochemistry and baking wouldn’t combine well.

But Nick Adkins, owner of Manitou French Pastries, found that his experience in a lab coat makes him a better chef as he prepares macarons, croissants, galettes, quiches and other delicacies.

Adkins spent seven years as a postdoctoral fellow in molecular medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

“My in vivo model was yeast,” he said.

That knowledge comes in handy, along with the attention to detail and procedures a scientific discipline requires.

“You’re thinking about the reasons behind the steps in recipes,” he said. “Knowing every ingredient and how it works is essential,” especially when working at altitude.

Adkins opened the patisserie in a tiny shop at the west end of Manitou Avenue on July 20. A few days later, Manitou Avenue was closed east of his shop as the city was forced to replace a damaged culvert below the street.

The closure hit at the height of tourist season, but word quickly spread through Manitou about the quality of Adkins’ work. As a result, the shop was a near-instant success.

“It started off just me,” Adkins said. “I worked 18- or 19-hour days the first month or so.”

Steady demand allowed him to hire an assistant after six weeks, and he recently added a part-time employee. The shop currently is open 8 a.m — 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Adkins, a West Virginia native, started helping his mom make biscuits when he was about 9 years old.

After finishing school, he intended to be a cancer researcher.

Adkins and his wife moved to Colorado Springs after she got a job here. Unable to find work in Colorado as a college professor or researcher, he decided to go back to school.

An intensive, four-month course at the Cook Street School of Culinary Arts in Denver and

a year at the Gastronomicom International Culinary Academy in Agde, France, confirmed that pastry was his passion.

Starting his first business wasn’t easy, but Adkins said he’s used to teaching himself what he needs to know. He also had help from a friend in Denver who owns a pastry shop and got advice from local business people, his insurance agent and his accountant.

Adkins thought a French bakery would fit well in Manitou and found a vacant spot in a building that formerly housed Safe Place for Pets. He outfitted the shop with a counter he found at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore and a secondhand refrigerated display case.

“I realized there was no pastry shop anywhere close to here,” he said, adding many of his initial customers were his neighbors.

He partnered with the Pelindaba Lavender shop in Manitou, which sells Adkins’ coffee cake and lavender coconut macarons, and struck a deal with Tubby’s Turn Around, another Manitou store, to sell his breads.

Adkins started making bread about six weeks ago but had to stop after breaking his thumb in a fall. A recently hired part-time assistant will help him produce sourdough baguettes, New York rye and sprouted grain loaves, and a variety of rolls.

He also plans to continue making custom cakes for special occasions and will add crème puffs, madeleines, pumpkin rolls and Christmas pastries for the holidays.

He wants to purchase the equipment he needs to make French onion soup this winter.

Adkins hopes to add another location with space for a café within the next two to three years but said, “I’d like to keep somewhat local in Manitou.”

Meanwhile, he’ll keep growing a loyal customer base that is impressed by the quality of his buttery quiches and not-too-sweet treats.

“We don’t cut corners on ingredients,” he said. “Most of the time, when people try our food, they come back.”

Ski deals aplenty for servicemembers, families

Unlike last winter, the snow is falling in Colorado’s high country this November and many of the state’s ski resorts have already opened.

That’s great news for Front Range military families, as they can begin planning their ski and snowboard trips without worrying about a lack of powder.

Military service has its privileges when it comes to skiing and snowboarding as most resorts around the state offer some type of discount. Active duty military members and their dependents, reservists and military retirees with Department of Defense or military identification often qualify for a price break — many times at steep markdowns. Some offer season passes while others offer daily lift-ticket discounts, and some offer both.

“The ski industry, generally, wants to make sure military members and veterans feel they’re appreciated, and that’s why we’re seeing the steep discounts at resorts across the state,” said Chris Linsmayer, spokesman for Colorado Ski Country USA. “From a snow perspective, we’re off to a great start and we’ve been fortunate to see solid accumulations in all of the geographic areas of the state.”

Aspen Snowmass – Aspen offers discounts on season passes and daily lift tickets for all retired veterans, active duty and honorably discharged military personnel of U.S. Armed Services and their dependents. Veterans must present a valid military ID, discharge papers or proof of V.A. benefits at the ticket office to redeem. Arapahoe Basin Ski Area – New for the 2018-19 season, Arapahoe Basin is offering a discounted military pass that offers unlimited, unrestricted skiing and riding at A-Basin for only $99 for adults and $79 for children. Pop-up shop program gives retailers chance to test market

A Colorado Springs native and her 15-year-old dog, Kaly, are among several new faces greeting shoppers downtown this holiday season.

Michele Osborne recently opened her pop-up shop, Art&Article, next to Iron Bird Brewing Company on East Costilla Street. The home goods and lifestyle store has been operating for six years online and features designer pieces from around the world, including Japan and Scandinavia.

“Pop-up shops are a really great way to test if there is a market for your business to have an actual store,” Osborne said.

“There is not a store like ours downtown really, and I wasn’t sure if it didn’t exist because there is no market for it. But I really feel like downtown is going through an exciting shift right now where they are really trying to add more unique types of stores and kind of diversify things.”

The downtown Holiday Pop-up Shop program can offer digital retailers, such as Osborne, an opportunity to test out selling products in a physical environment, said Sarah Humbargar, vice president of development services for Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs.

“The call for applications is open to any type of retailer,” she said. “We’ve had everything from galleries to little artisan markets to clothing stores participate over the years.”

Launched in 2014, applicants apply for a pop-up shop each year and then a committee determines which concepts will become operational businesses that holiday season.

“If they are selected, we work with them to find the right space and then meet directly with the landlord and them,” Humbargar said. “The landlord agrees to take 50 percent of their monthly rent from the applicant and then 50 percent is covered through the Downtown Development Authority as a grant.”

The leases are for two months, November and December, but the goal of the program is to have participants extend their leases beyond that.

“The program tends to work very well for a retailer that has a small vendor-type location already at somewhere like Pikes Peak Market,” Humbargar said. “Then it also works really well for online-only retail businesses that are looking to see if it makes sense for them to also go into a store in addition to online.”

Some success stories out of the program include the Rocky Mountain Soap Market, which just expanded into a new location downtown, as well as the newly-opened artisan market, Colorado Handmade, on Tejon Street next to Rooster’s House Of Ramen.

“Colorado Handmade was our only pop-up shop for the last two years,” Humbargar said. “We’ve been in a state of

having very little retail space the last couple of years and part of what the program does is it helps fill vacancies and makes sure all of our spaces are really full and vibrant during the holiday season.”

This year, Osborne and Peri Bolts, founder of Eclectic CO, had concepts that were selected to be part of the pop-up shop program.

Eclectic CO is located on Tejon Street across from Acacia Park and is a collective of 24 southern Colorado-based artisans.

The boutique-style maker’s market offers a range of handmade goods, including a variety of items crafted from materials bound for the landfill.

“This is intended to be a place that makers or artists can gravitate to that helps reduce barriers to market,” Bolts said.

She said a lot of the artisans also sell their products online either via their own website or an Etsy-like platform.

However, after meeting several of them at a pop-up market event in August, Bolts learned of their desire to have a more permanent physical retail presence but couldn’t because of the overhead cost.

“Overwhelmingly, they were like, ‘I would love to be in a brick-and-mortar store,’ but nobody could afford to do that on their own, especially downtown,” she said.

“Nobody can afford the rent alone. It really takes the collective movement to be able to do operate in a physical store,” Bolts said.

During the shop’s first weekend, all but one artisan made a sale with several already making enough to cover their part of the first month’s rent.

“It’s been pretty amazing,” Bolts said.

“I think as the word gets out and as we get closer to the holidays it’s going to be even better. Foot traffic here is fantastic.”

Meanwhile, Osborne said her first weekend started off a “little slower” than she had hoped.

“A lot of the people who have been coming in are coming in because friends told them to stop by or they heard about us through the Downtown Partnership,” she said. “But outside of that, it’s just been passersby and there is just not a lot of foot traffic on this block. That’s a little bit of a downer, but I do think we are a destination store, so I think that it will work out once people learn about us.”

Osborne also opened the shop to help connect the Springs to designers from across the world, she said. “I wanted to bring something new to downtown. We carry several international designers and ones from throughout the country.”

Both of the pop-up owners expressed interest in seeing their concepts become permanent downtown fixtures.

“We intend to be a full-time space after December it just remains to be seen if we can afford to stay here or if we have to relocate somewhere else downtown,” Bolts said. “We really intend to power through though and really feel this space is perfect for us.”

While Osborne also is hopeful to remain downtown, she isn’t ready to make that decision, she said.

“It’s kind of hard to tell at this point after only being open a weekend,” she said.

“Plus, this is during the holidays, so it’s not an accurate gauge of what business is like during the entire year. But if things go well, I would really love to stay.”

And if that happens, Osborne said her next move would be hiring employees.

“Right now, it’s just me and I am open seven days a week,” she said. “I definitely will need some help if I stay past December.”

Mt. Carmel is proud to soldier-on with Army Veteran Harold! He served as a forward observer, led security missions, conducted detention operations, operated heavy vehicles and led teams feeding troops. “I wanted to help our country; I wanted to lead. I did that for 22 years and I’d do it all over again,” said Harold. In retirement, before Christmas 2017, Harold was laid off from work.

Our team found rent assistance through Colorado Veterans of Foreign Wars and, in partnership with El Paso County Veterans Service Office, we launched an effort to correct VA benefit errors dating back to 2009. In less than 30 days, they were paid in full. “I thank God every day. I’ve been struggling for five years; this is a blessing for my family,” said Harold. “I can go to bed and know my car isn’t going to be repossessed. Bill collectors aren’t calling anymore.”

Today, life has improved. Harold plans to work with a Pikes Peak Workforce Center financial coach to rebuild his credit and buy a home. “For our younger veterans, I tell them: when pursuing benefits, don’t give up the fight,” said the former Army troop leader. “I tell all veterans to visit Mt. Colorado’s statute, which became effective in April 2014, defines a public benefit corporation as one that is intended to produce one or more public benefits and balances the public purpose with shareholders’ financial interests.

“We have to report out annually on our impact to keep clothing out of the trash cycle and empowering moms who are experiencing homelessness,” Marts said.

The company donates 3 percent of sales to Partners in Housing and donates upcycled children’s clothing to organizations such as Community Partnership for Child Development and Head Start.

The Tonya component of the company’s name represents homeless moms, and the Tate part stands for sea turtles endangered by pollution from shipping and landfill runoff.

Marts said she could have focused on other marine life such as egrets or octopi but decided to go with turtles.

“I had the benefit of swimming with two large sea turtles when I was on vacation in the British Virgin Islands around 2000,” she said.

Marts said sales of the baby and child bloomers, which retail for an average of $20, are “slow but growing.

Pikes Peak Women did an investment early on in the company for us to make a significant amount of pants.”

Marts has been doing the sewing at her home since her seamstress moved away, and also works on building a following on Etsy, Facebook and Instagram. A website is in the works.

Marts, formerly chief programs officer at Care and Share Food Bank, also does consulting work in nonprofit fundraising while she grows Tate & Tonya’s sales.

She plans popup appearances at the several holiday markets in November and December.

“My plan is to have three seamstresses employed by April of next year,” she said, “and I hope to pay myself a salary within the next three months. I would love for this to be my full-time job, but the notion of a public benefit corporation is to create jobs for other people.”

Sometimes small businesses are started on a shoestring. Melissa Marts’ new venture was started on a thread.

Marts’ company, Tate & Tonya, makes and sells upcycled clothing for children from infants to age 5.

She turns donated dresses, shirts and other items into one-of-a-kind kids’ bloomer-style pants and sells them on Etsy and at popup events.

Marts got the idea for the company while she was executive director of the Women’s Resource Agency, which aims to nurture financial independence for women and teen girls.

The agency has a clothing donation program for women who are trying to get jobs.

“We would end up turning away three-fourths of the clothing,” Marts said, adding some items went to organizations like TESSA and Goodwill.

But used clothing that has a few stains or rips or is out of style ends up in landfills “and just never breaks down” if it’s not made of natural fibers.

Other pieces would go to USAgain, which ships clothing overseas.

“They ship in huge freighters that travel to multiple places with really cheap labor,” Marts said.

In places like India, women literally unravel the clothing into thread, respool it and sell the thread.

“In some ways, it is a story of recycling,” Marts said. “But there is a cost to the environment and a cost to people — mostly young women — who don’t end up getting paid a reasonable wage to get out of poverty and stay stuck in that life.

“I was like, what can we do with these clothes that are going into the trash? We talked about making aprons, but people weren’t really excited about it. Then we came up with the baby bloomer idea. A seamstress at WRA started experimenting with different patterns, and we were off and running.”

But Marts found she didn’t have much time to work on the project and decided to start her own company, which she launched in April 2017.

She organized Tate & Tonya as a public benefit corporation, an entity that is a for-profit alternative to a not-for-profit company for socially conscious entrepreneurs.

Colorado is one of 19 states that allow public benefit corporations.

Colorado doesn’t track the number of these corporations, but BenefitCorp. net, a website that offers information about public benefit corporations, lists almost 4,000 such corpora-

Skin care store aims for healthier natural products

Jewels Burdick started making natural skin care products after a health scare in her family several years ago.

“My mother thought that she had Alzheimer’s because she was having a lot of memory trouble,” Burdick said. “It was very worrisome for our family and, sort of a long story short, she had an over exposure to aluminum chloride. That caused me to take a step back and research how she was getting heavy metal exposure.”

That’s when Burdick learned that aluminum chloride is often used in cosmetics and personal care products, she said.

“There is nobody that really regulates what goes on the outside of your body,” she said. “I also found out that 66 percent of what goes on your body gets absorbed by it and goes into the bloodstream.”

Burdick began making her own deodorant before slowly replacing all of her skin care products with ones she crafted.

Her first customers were friends and family. Then she began selling her products from a small corner at her graphic design agency, SuperFine Designs, in Old Colorado City.

“I would have all of these graphic designers in here working and people would come knock and whisper if they could get some deodorant,” she said. “It was kind of like prohibition-style body products.”

About three years ago, Burdick opened her natural skin care products store, Simple Body, where the design agency was housed at 2616 W. Colorado Ave. No. 5.

“I still have the agency but it’s only me now,” she said. “It was pretty scary making that decision and then worrying about if people were going to come in the store.”

Located off the beaten path, Burdick said Simple Body doesn’t get a lot of foot traffic.

“I’ve had to be pretty creative in how I setup the outside and where I put my sign,” she said, adding finding money for marketing

“Advertising is expensive,” she said. “I really have to rely on word-of-mouth and I’m fortunate because my customers don’t just like the product — they love it and are passionate about it.”

Burdick estimates about 70 percent of her business are repeat customers.

“And the other 30 percent heard about us from a friend or family member,” she said.

The store sells facial care products, body lotions and butters, as well as massage oils and other skin care products.

“All of my products have to work,” Burdick said. “They have to live up to what they say on the label because I have bought so many things in this industry that I was just so disappointed in.”

She recently launched the store’s zerowaste body products refill station to help reduce the use of plastic. The station features glass jars for purchase that can be refilled or customers can bring their own sanitized container.

“One thing that I have realized is that the younger generation cares about the earth a lot,” Burdick said. “They are super passionate about the ocean and our use of plastics.”

It’s also important to Burdick that she keeps her merchandise affordable, she said.

“I was sort of disgusted with how much natural body products cost when I first started researching them,” she said. “I always want to maintain a price point that won’t create

Oftentimes, people associate the high cost of a product with higher quality, Burdick said.

“I want to help change that mentality,” she said. “I don’t believe in that, and I think that people who make products like this need to stand behind them and be more humble and price their products a little more affordably for people.”

Another priority of Burdick’s is educat-

ing customers about her products and their ingredients, she said.

“Some people don’t know that what they put on their body goes in their body,” she said.

Common ingredients found in Burdick’s products include cocoa and shea butters, avocado and coconut oils, vegetable glycerin, vitamin E and cinnamon.

“The cinnamon is the preservative,” she said. “But, they are all ingredients that are great for you because that’s all I use.”
