eople hoping to improve their health typically look at the New Year as a great time to jumpstart a fitness routine. Health club memberships typically swell during the year’s first two months, while stationary bikes and elliptical machines tend to fly off the shelves.

By March, however, most resolvers have petered out.

“I think part of the fitness-resolution failure lies in the whole concept of the resolution itself,” said Glen Williams, Army Wellness Center director at Fort Carson. “Jan. 1 provides a perfect starting point for people who want to change things up and try to get fit. The trouble is, people make a fitness resolution without putting a whole lot of thought into the methodology behind it.”

Most people make that resolution to lose 10 pounds, for example. But, after three to four weeks

of eating what they think are healthier foods and exercising three to four times a week, they’re left sore, hungry and exhausted. Meanwhile, the scale shows little results for their efforts.

To Williams, this sort of resolution represents a narrow view of what people are trying to accomplish. Alternatively, positive results usually require a change in mindset.

Instead of resolving to lose a certain amount of weight, people should think in terms of wanting to make better choices and being better informed in the long term.

“You can’t manage what you don’t measure,” he said. “So, it’s always good to know your numbers.

That way you know what you can improve on.”

Health educators at Fort Carson’s Army Wellness Center typically test their clients for body-fat composition, maximum oxygen consumption (VO2) and metabolic rate. Williams said the AWC uses

standardized tests that are particularly accurate, but that people who don’t have access to a military wellness center should be able to find similar, though probably not as accurate, testing equipment and guidance at their local gyms as well.

“When people first come into the Army Wellness Center, we show them their baseline [test results],” he said. “Even if someone was excellent in some category and poor in others, he or she would know their numbers. Then, every time they come in afterward, they’re looking to keep that number or improve upon it. And, that’s where we try to keep them in that maintenance phase.”

The maintenance plan is useful for those who are out of fitness shape and looking to improve their health and happiness, but it’s also helpful for those in relatively good physical condition looking to improve on their performance.

he holidays are over and it’s that time of the season where people begin to tally up their bills.

While everyone is cleaning up messes made during the holidays, many are preparing resolutions for 2020 — and getting finances in order is a common one. That may mean building up a savings account, repairing credit issues, eliminating debt and more.

It’s a task many people seek to accomplish but often struggle with. Part of the problem is many people don’t empower themselves with the proper tools to do the job.

“Step 1 is to write down your goals and put them where you will see them,” said John Willcockson, a Colorado Springs area financial counselor. “There is something about writing goals down on paper that boosts your motivation.

“Take a moment to figure out which goals are most important, and put them in order.”

Willcockson suggests those with financial goals get SMART. No, he’s not questioning anyone’s intelligence. It’s an acronym used to help stay on course financially.

“In financial counseling we like to use SMART goals,” he said: Specific: direct, meaningful, detailed; Measurable: quantifiable, able to track; Attainable: realistic for your abilities and resources; Relevant: aligns with your values; and Time-based: milestones and a deadline.

Wealth isn’t created overnight and patience is key, Willcockson said, so

it’s important to start with small, manageable goals in order to hit bigger achievements.

One suggestion, outside of opening a savings account, is to create a spreadsheet to track spending habits.

“Making a planner or spreadsheet helps you to see where you can tuck away and save more of your money,” said Heather Wynkoop, member service representative at Ent Credit Union. “As long as you utilize it, it can be a useful tool. If you have that strength to keep from spending or buying random items, you can see where else you can save.”

Rather than splurge on small wants, Wynkoop said that money could go toward a vacation or savings.

Or, even better: It can be reinvested.

One way to build wealth and save money is with a savings account, preferably a high-interest yield account.

But what about those going through financial hardships?

Those living paycheck to paycheck may have a difficult time building the wealth needed to begin saving.

Cailin Joe, member service representative at Ent Credit Union, says savers have to begin somewhere.

“You’ll never make a difference if you don’t make that first step,” Joe said.

Willcockson said this is where the SMART plan comes in handy. Putting the SMART acronym into practice not only requires discipline, he said it also helps to create a vision.

“We might think, ‘I want to buy a car’ and that’s an OK start,” Willcockson said. “To be successful, you will do better with more detail. If you want to buy a three-year-old Corolla with no more

than 40,000 miles, at a price no higher than the [Kelly Blue Book] average, that gives you enough detail to make progress. Some research may be required.”

Specificity helps people develop a keener sense of what they’d like versus what they need and helps to hone in on what must be done to reach those goals.

“You might find that working with someone else can help keep you on track,” Willcockson said.

“Ask a friend to keep you on track and honest. If your goal is to save $100 John Willcockson per month toward a down payment on your Corolla, ask a friend to check your progress at the end of each month.

You may have to share each monthly bank statement with your friend.

“If your savings balance has not gone up by $100 at the end of each month, you owe your friend an agreed upon reward; maybe a Starbucks coffee or a chocolate sundae. If you do hit your monthly goal, your friend buys their own coffee, and you both enjoy a visit.”

Debt is also a hitch that burdens people from reaching their financial goals. Willcockson said that’s a subject that can fi ll an entire paper. But he kept his suggestion short.

“Find a debt or financial counselor — free, if possible — and check with your bank or credit union,” Willcockson said. “Avoid debtrepair companies. Their ‘cure’ is typically worse than the disease. Figure out how much you owe and write down the name, the balance, the interest rate, monthly payment and any deadlines on that debt. MENTAL HEALTH IN 2020 T

he military demands its service members maintain a culture of physical fitness, and walking around any base, it’s easy to see the results. But good mental health lacks that same visibility. Mirrors can show toned muscles, but they’re not as good at reflecting finding inner peace and purpose. However, psychologists have published a wealth of information on mental health, including specialized research on those in the military.

Mental health issues aren’t uncommon in the military — according to the American Psychological Associationpublished book “Deployment Psychology: Evidence-Based Strategies to Promote Mental Health in the Military,” a 2004 report showed that between 16% and 29% of Soldiers and Marines showed symptoms of PTSD, depression or generalized anxiety when interviewed three to four months of a deployment. The book further notes barriers to seeking care, including major social stigma around asking for help.

“Less than half of service members with serious mental

health problems reported receiving professional help,” the book says. “[Discussions on this] contributed to the development of population-wide postdeployment training to reduce stigma and encourage service members to seek care.”

But since mental health has no physical refelction, it’s not always easy to know how bad things are and how serious a response is needed. Another APA-published book, “Building Psychological Resilience in Military Personnel,” says that service members who address minor problems and anticipate challenges before they can turn into bigger problems tend

to be more resilient.

“Seeking help when people are first noticing their distress [helps],” said Maj. Judy Cole, mental health flight commander for the 21st Medical Group at Peterson Air Force Base. “If someone hasn’t been sleeping or has been feeling down for a few months, that is the time to come in for help.”

She clarifies, however, that members should come in anytime for assistance, even if they have been struggling with mental health concerns for an extended period. With the variety of helping agencies the military offers, no one need to try to handle their concerns alone. Rather, she says that less healthy coping mechanisms have consequences, and if someone has been officially reprimanded or is facing legal consequences, asking for help won’t make the legal issues go away, but we can help individuals cope better with these situations.

It’s crucial, then, for service members to be paying attention to any warning signs of declining mental health. Cole suggests using an app or a journal to keep track of what’s going on, since writing things down can make trends or worrying behaviors pop out more clearly.

Another potentially useful tool from the APA perspective, “Building Psychological Resilience,” discusses the Soldier Adaptation Model (SAM) for looking at a service member’s mental health. It models mental health in three stages: potential stressors, strains and outcomes.

Potential stressors, as defined by the book, are pretty straightforward. It lists extended work hours, isolation from family, boredom and potential danger. That model focuses on deployed service members, so it’s important to reflect on other stressors, such as deadlines, paperwork and physical fitness tests. That reflection should extend beyond work, too, and encompass private life stressors like illness.

Strains, in the SAM, are negative responses to those potential stressors. They can be emotional responses like irritability or emotional exhaustion, but they can also be behavioral.

Be aware of withdrawal from social groups or activities, as well as of increased drinking or substance use that may suggest substance abuse. The Center for Disease Control defines moderate drinking as no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two for men, with a “drink” being a standard 1.5-ounce shot of 80-proof spirits or the equivalent amount of alcohol in beer or wine. Be aware also of cognitive strains — things like unusual distractibility or forgetfulness. Other warning signs include reckless driving and unusual aggression.

Outcomes are the consequences of those strains, which includes things like chemical dependence, on-the-job accidents, anger management issues and more.

Generally speaking, Cole said that behavioral changes are tells when someone’s mental health is declining. Overeating or unhealthy eating can be a mental health red flag, for example, as can lingering headaches and starting or increasing a smoking habit.

As for the solutions, preventative or responsive, they’re simple and straightforward, and they involve taking basic care of oneself.

“There are a group of people that are more resilient, and from what we’ve seen, that group … they’re taking care of themselves,” Cole said. “They’re staying active. They’re putting good food into their bodies, engaging in enjoyable activities, and making sleep a priority … it’s the simple things that we do that have the most impact.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs offers a variety of apps to help maintain these healthy habits, as well as to ward off bad coping habits. Cole makes particular note of

the Mindfulness Coach app, which, according to the VA website, is designed to help veterans, service members and others develop the habit of paying attention to a moment and understanding it without passing judgement. Practicing mindfulness can also include journaling, yoga, tai chi or other meditative practices, depending on the interests of the individuals in question.

The VA website also offers a variety of more specific use apps, from a Mood Coach that helps schedule and track positive, mood-affirming activities, to Stay Quit Coach and VetChange, which are designed to help users quit smoking and develop healthier drinking habits, respectively.

Of course, the military is fundamentally a workplace, so looking at strategies for coping with stress at work apply. In addition to mindfulness and developing healthy responses like diet, exercise, sleep and a sense of connection to friends and family, the APA talks about establishing and communicating boundaries. Having a clear line between working and not working can help keep work stress from bleeding over into relaxation and recreation time. It’s especially easy to neglect or be expected to breach that boundary in the internet age, but that makes said boundaries all the more important.

“There are very few of us who actually need to be attached to our phones 24/7,” says Cole.

Having that clear boundary makes it easier to plan relaxing and recharging time, too. Cole notes that service members get 30 days of leave time per year. She said it’s important to make use of that time, rather than letting it build up, and that it’s good to plan out longer blocks of time in order to be able to disconnect and recharge.

In 2017, password security company Dashlane reported the average American has 200 accounts requiring a password, while LastPass put the number at 191. That’s expected to double within five years.

Customize Toolbar icon > right-click the LastPass icon > Show in toolbar or drag and drop the LastPass icon into your toolbar.

Next, save your passwords in the LastPass vault. The easiest way (and the way I wish I’d found first) is to use the internet as usual, and save your passwords as you log in to each site.

That way you don’t have to set aside time to think of the sites you need and the passwords you don’t remember.

When you log in to a site, click the LastPass icon by the password field and confirm that you want LastPass to save the password to your vault.

Any time you return to that site, LastPass will fi ll in everything for you.

LastPass also helps with sites you haven’t used before by generating random passwords for you and storing them in your LastPass vault.

When you’re creating a new account, just click the LastPass icon to use the “generate and fi ll” option to make a new password. You can even click “more options” to tailor things like length and which special characters to include (see more at youtu. be/_Hlen9eeWi4).

For many sites, LastPass can automatically change your password.

Click the Auto-Change button and LastPass will create a new (long, randomized) password for that site and save it for future visits.

The LastPass icon in your browser will also alert you to password issues as you visit sites. When you see a red alert number over the icon, click to find out what should be fi xed. An example: “LastPass has detected that you have used the password for this login on other sites, too. We recommend going to your account settings for this site, and creating a new password.”

LastPass can securely store your credit card information and address for fast checkout in online stores.

To set up: Click the LastPass icon in your browser. Select Form Fills > Add Form Fills. Enter the information you want to store. It’s encrypted along with your passwords and other data.

You can add multifactor authentication to your LastPass account so that your master password alone isn’t enough to log in and access your LastPass vault. To set up: Click the LastPass icon in your browser and select Open My Vault.

Click Account Settings. Click the Multifactor Authentication tab. Click the pen icon next to your preferred authenticator and set the “Enabled” drop-down menu to Yes. Follow the directions.

So that you can access LastPass from your mobile devices, download the app for iOS, Android or Windows phone.

I haven’t dug into LastPass’ other features — yet — but there are options to share passwords with other people, grant emergency access to your account, and securely store digital records and notes (think insurance cards, Wi-Fi passwords, memberships).
