his year, we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of Manitou Springs’ founding, so welcome to a summer with lots to do! Check manitousprings.org/manitou-springs-150 for more about those events.

We are just catching our stride at 150, so plan on having a fun, active time here. We are the gateway to Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, and many other attractions and natural wonders. Take the Cog Railway to the summit or hike the Barr Trail to the top of America’s Mountain. If you want to drive, the Pikes Peak Highway begins about five miles west of Manitou.

Those of us who live here love the outdoors and invite you to enjoy our trails and parks. The Garden of the Gods borders our city limits, and its stunning natural formations make for great walks and picnics.

Manitou Springs is a great base to check out other attractions like the U.S. Air Force Academy, the Olympic Training Center or the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum.

Explore our Downtown Historic District with its great shops and restaurants. Sample the natural mineral springs that brought Native Americans to the valley for centuries. Families will love the Penny Arcade, the perfect place for kids on a summer day or evening.

uring your visit to Manitou Springs, you’ll likely enjoy sunny mornings and afternoons that cool slightly as clouds build. That’s the typical weather pattern during the summer months. Often there’s a late afternoon shower or two.

Over the course of the summer months, we can get downpours that dump a lot of rain in a short time. Once in a while, heavy rains upstream can cause Ruxton Creek or Fountain Creek to get rowdy and flood nearby streets.

If flooding is imminent, you’ll hear the city’s flood siren (near City Hall), followed by a spoken alert instructing you to move away from the creeks and get to higher ground.

The city tests the flood siren at noon the first Monday of each month. At any other time, you should be aware of what to do when you hear the siren.

First and foremost, get away from the creek areas and head uphill on foot. It’s recommended that you don’t try to drive out of the flood zone; you could be trapped in your car.

City officials also recommend that you register your smartphone to receive notices from the El Paso County Emergency Notification System. Call the El Paso County Enhanced 911 Authority at 719785-1900 or register at www.elpasoteller911.org.

he Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce, Visitors Bureau & Office of Economic Development is your best resource for all things Manitou.

The chamber is open 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. weekends.

Manitou is home to 5,000-plus people in approximately 3.3 square miles. Being nearly surrounded by mountains means that streets can be steep, narrow and, often, one-way.

Other important things to know:

fatigued, nauseated, breathless and/or dizzy, sit down as quickly as possible. If you’re hiking, descend as safely and quickly as you can.

Take acetaminophen for headache and drink water. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

It’s always best to hike with at least one other person in case of trouble; if you do hike alone, let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to return.

Weather can change suddenly, so wear layers you can peel off or put back on.

If you’re heading up to the Pikes Peak summit, dress for weather at 14,115 feet.

Temperatures can be 30 to 40 degrees lower than in Manitou.

Manitou is at 6,500 feet, so flatlanders should take it easy for the first day or two.

The climate is dry, so between that and the altitude, hydration is essential. Limit your alcohol and caffeine, and drink plenty of water.

It’s imperative to wear sunscreen with a high SPF — mountain air is thin and the sun can toast skin quickly.

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING

Hopping on the free shuttle is a great way to get through downtown hassle-free. Check the chamber’s website (manitousprings.org/ manitou-free-shuttle) for updates on the Route 33 and Route 36 shuttles.

Parking on downtown streets requires payment. For details on rates, go to manitouspringsgov.com/562/_Parking-Mobility.

The city website (manitouspringsgov.com) has a link to parking information in the top left of the home page — just click to see realtime availability details.

Downtown also has four public parking lots: Wichita lot, 708 Manitou Ave.; Cañon lot, 135 Cañon Ave.; Hiawatha Gardens, 10 Old Man’s Trail; and the Smischny lot, 1134 Manitou Ave. See details at manitousprings gov.com/586/Downtown.

Payment kiosks are located throughout downtown; remember your license plate number so you can input it. The kiosks accept cash or credit/debit cards, and cards

are a good option if you’re unsure how long you’ll need.

You also can add more time at any parking kiosk by inputting your license plate number again. If you paid by card, you can input your cell number to get an alert when your time is expiring, then add more time from wherever you are.

Residential-area parking is for residents and guests only. Cars parked in those areas without Residential Parking Program permits will be ticketed.

The Manitou Springs Parking Office is inside City Hall, 606 Manitou Ave. The Parking Hotline number is 719-301-8413.

Speed limits in the downtown core are 20 miles per hour; watch for pedestrians and bicyclists. Riding bikes, scooters and skateboards on sidewalks is not allowed.

Also watch for roaming deer, which often walk through and across Manitou streets. If you see one deer, slow down and watch for the others sure to follow.

Manitou has roundabouts at the intersection of Manitou and Ruxton avenues, and at the intersection of Manitou Avenue and Serpentine Drive. In case you’ve never navigated one before, the rules are simple.

As you approach the roundabout, watch for oncoming traffic from your left. Those vehicles have the right-of-way, so stop and

wait. As soon as they pass and no other traffic is coming, you can turn right into the roundabout; vehicles waiting to enter must yield to you. Always yield to pedestrians.

MARIJUANA In 2000, Colorado voters approved Amendment 20, the medical use of marijuana. In 2012, Amendment 64 followed, legalizing the sale, cultivation and possession of recreational marijuana.

Both are available in Manitou at two licensed outlets: Maggie’s Farm, 141 Manitou Ave., maggiesfarmmarijuana.com or 719685-1655; and Emerald Fields, 27 Manitou Ave., emeraldfields.com or 719-375-0554.

Colorado residents with debilitating medical conditions can obtain a card permitting them to buy medicinal marijuana. Information: cdphe.colorado.gov/medicalmarijuana.

U.S. citizens age 21 and older can purchase up to 28 grams, or one ounce, of recreational marijuana. Possessing more can result in fines and penalties.

It’s illegal to use — smoke, eat or vape — marijuana at or near a dispensary, or in public. Manitou has marijuana-friendly lodging; check manitousprings.org/ Continued on page 9

If you have marijuana in your car, it must be sealed. And driving under the influence can lead to charges. If you’re smoking, wait six hours before getting behind the wheel.

If you’re eating or drinking a product with THC, wait eight hours.

“THC” is short for tetrahydrocannabinol, the main psychoactive component in cannabis that causes the “high” sensation.

“CBD” is short for cannabidiol, which can be extracted from cannabis or hemp. It does not cause a high, but is touted for helping to relieve a variety of ailments. CBD-based products are available in Manitou Springs shops.

Colorado law dictates the following: You must be 21 and older to buy, possess or use retail marijuana, and that’s limited to 1 ounce at a time. It’s a felony to give or sell retail marijuana to minors. Retail marijuana is intended for personal use.

Marijuana must be used in private or in certain licensed businesses. It may not be consumed openly or publicly. This includes areas accessible to the public such as transportation facilities, schools, amusement/sporting/ music venues, parks, playgrounds, sidewalks,

roads, and outdoor and rooftop cafes.

It is illegal to smoke at indoor-but-public locations such as bars, restaurants and common areas in buildings. Individual Manitou lodging establishments may allow consumption in private rooms.

Penalties for violating any of these regulations range from a fine to a jail or prison sentence.

ummer in Manitou Springs is like summer in most scenic mountain towns: busy. So what makes people choose Manitou over Colorado’s other lovely places? The short answer is that there is a little something for everyone.

So, whether you’re here for one day or the rest of your life, here are some ways to make the most of your moments in Manitou.

So it’s your first day in Manitou Springs, and (sadly) your last.

Never fear, in one day there’s plenty to do.

You can’t come to the Pikes Peak region without getting up close and personal with the peak itself. Consider hopping in the car to drive up Pikes Peak (5089 Pikes Peak Highway, Cascade, pikespeak colorado.com, 385-7325). For other ways to get to the summit, see pages 16 and 22.

Be sure to give yourself time to get used to the altitude and keep hydrated.

At the top, you can see the whole of Colorado Springs below while enjoying the famous high-altitude doughnuts. Be sure to get there before the clouds roll in (which happens in summer around 2 or 3 p.m.).

Tourists and locals alike are fans of Adventures Out West (advoutwest.com, 578-0935). You can take jeep tours, go zip lining, explore the mountains from horseback or ride in a hot-air balloon.

Find the AOW facility at the west end of Manitou Avenue.

If you want to sit for a while, check out Academy Riding Stables (4 El Paso Blvd. Colorado Springs, academyridingstables.com, 6335667), which tailors your trail ride to your level of experience. See more on page 37.

By the end of the day, you might be pretty pooped. That’s OK, because Manitou Springs is home to SunWater Spa (514 El Paso Blvd., www.sunwellness.net, 695-7007), where you can treat yourself to a massage or yoga. And consider a soak in the mineral-water tubs while gazing at Pikes Peak.

If you have kids (or just want to feel like one), head to the Manitou Springs Penny Arcade (900 Manitou Ave., 685-9815). You’ll find some modern games here, but a lot of the games are old, featuring mechanical wooden figurines and hand-painted backdrops. It’s a little history and a lot of fun, and prizes await.

The rest of us may be intimidated by the Incline or “too old” for games (as if ), but Manitou has plenty of activities for regular Joes. If you want to start your morning outdoors, try a self-guided mineral springs walking tour (see page 29) to sample the city’s healing springs and learn about local history from the informative signs at each spring.

Manitou through the ages L

ong before European explorers discovered the Pikes Peak region, Native Americans knew of the bubbling springs at the base of Pikes Peak. The peak, which the Utes called “Tava” (sun), was the first of their sacred “shining mountains” to catch the rays of the morning sun and, with the springs and Garden of the Gods, formed a special part of their mountain homeland.

Plains tribes including the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Kiowa, Comanche and Apache also visited these health-giving waters. Though usually enemies, most would practice restraint as they drank the water and bathed in the pools.

The Spanish were the first Europeans to visit the area, followed by French mountain men. After the Louisiana Purchase, the U.S. government sent Lt. Zebulon Pike to explore the new territory in 1806. Though he would miss the springs entirely, he brought attention to the area by reporting on his attempted climb of the mountain that’s named for him.

Dr. Edwin James, botanist of the 1820 Long expedition, was the first Caucasian to climb the peak and write about the springs. Military reports, like this one, were widely read by the public and Colorado’s medicine springs began to take on legendary status.

The most widely read review of Manitou’s charms was written by British officer George Frederick Ruxton, whose 1847 adventure to Pikes Peak is chronicled in his book “Adventures in Mexico and the Rocky Mountains.” He described the picturesque location and the superior quality of the mineral water, which “hissed and sparkled” in his cup.

Once miners started to flock to Colorado during the Pikes Peak or Bust gold rush, traffic increased dramatically as people used the Indian trail up Ute Pass as a route to the gold fields. By 1868, the Cheyenne and Arapaho were sent to reservations; the Utes met the same fate in 1879, separated from the sacred places of their ancestors.

Between the Gold Rush and Manitou’s founding in 1871, many people bought and sold the valley of the mineral springs. In 1868, Gen. William Jackson Palmer and Dr. William A. Bell investigated the springs while traveling through the area.

Along with other investors, Palmer and Bell organized the Colorado Springs Co. and began to quietly buy land at the base of Pikes Peak, including the box canyon that surrounded the mineral springs.

In 1871, stakes were driven for the boundaries of Colorado Springs and plans for the “pleasure grounds” of La Font were drawn up for future investors.

Palmer and Bell decided to rename their new resort Manitou, after the

Algonquin word for “great spirit.” The first hotel, the Manitou House, was completed in August 1872.

The great plague of the era was tuberculosis, which usually meant a death sentence for the afflicted. At a time when no one understood the science of disease transmission, entire families could become infected.

The medical profession proposed a theory that fresh, dry air, good food and lots of rest could possibly arrest the disease, so thousands of sufferers headed west in hopes of a cure.

Hotels, boarding houses and bath houses were built to accommodate the influx and local doctors were ready to prescribe which waters would cure which ills.

Despite the economic recessions of 1873 and 1893, Manitou continued its steady growth to become one of America’s premier health destinations by 1900.

Celebrities including President Ulysses S. Grant, Buffalo Bill Cody, Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman and Thomas Edison socialized with captains of industry and their families to partake of the balls, the scenic drives, the Cog Railway up Pikes Peak and promenades from spring to spring.

In the early 1900s, tourists began replacing the health-seekers, and attractions became even more important. The Cave of the Winds, the Cliff Dwellings, two incline railways and at least four dance halls brought even more admirers to Manitou. However, the Depression and World War II took a toll. By the 1960s, Manitou Springs, as it was now called, had seen better days.

The 1980s marked a turning point. A National Historic District was established, spurring restoration of many buildings and older homes. An art colony began to grow and prosper with the formation of art cooperatives and galleries.

Traditional attractions were rediscovered and new amenities offered, leading the way to the Manitou Springs of today.

Take in the view from America’s Mountain

isitors who want to drive to the summit of Pikes Peak and park in the top lot through Sept. 30 will be required to make an online reservation. Reservations can be made up to one month in advance on DrivePikesPeak.com. Same-day reservations will be allowed if space is available.

The timed-entry reservation system, which will allow a two-hour window for guests to arrive at the gateway, will ensure visitors have a parking space on the summit. The new system comes a year after the opening of the new Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center.

Visitors who don’t make a reservation can still drive to Devils Playground, and during June and July there’s a free shuttle bus to the top.

Besides the world-famous Cog Railway, Pikes Peak is served by two well-kept hiking trails and the paved Pikes Peak Highway. Be sure to check www.cograilway.com/weather to see what’s happening at the summit.

Barr Trail starts at the top of Ruxton Avenue and up Hydro Street in Manitou Springs, where there is also a parking lot. The other trail is on the west side of Pikes Peak and starts from the Crags Forest Service Campground near Mueller State Park, south of Divide in Teller County.

The highway, which starts in Cascade, just west of Manitou off U.S. Highway 24, is approximately 20 miles long.

The highway closes at 3 p.m., and the average round trip takes two or three hours. Along the way, you’ll find picnic grounds, Devil’s Playground, the Crystal Reservoir Visitors Center and the Glen Cove Inn. If you’d rather leave the driving to someone else, a four-hour Gray Line sightseeing tour starts in downtown Colorado Springs. The fare is $79.50 for adults (13 and older) and $59.50 for children 2 to 12 years old (younger children are not permitted), and includes the highway toll.

Make tracks for the summit

T

he Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway has been a centerpiece among Pikes Peak region attractions for more than a century.

As with any aging infrastructure, it needed maintenance and general refreshing, so the Cog closed in October 2017. Since then, teams of people — some in Switzerland — have been working on new cars, tracks and station amenities.

After The Broadmoor management invested $100 million in the project, the world-renowned attraction reopened in summer 2021 with additional restrooms, a walkway over the tracks, a second gift shop and a second track near the station.

More sidings on the mountain allow a train heading down, for instance, to get out of the way of a train heading up. Automatic switches have been added so conductors don’t have to get out and switch the tracks, saving time on the three-hour round-trip.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to buy tickets online (they’re discounted) and give their cellphone numbers so Cog staffers can update them about parking availability and traffic. Passengers should not arrive at the station, 515 Ruxton Ave., more than 30 minutes before the time on their tickets.

Staffers will direct traffic on Ruxton and around the parking lots.

Three automated gates will provide entry: one for longer vehicles, one for intermediate and one for compacts.

Parking is limited near the railway station, but more is available at Hiawatha Gardens, 10 Old Man’s Trail in downtown Manitou (visit www.manitouspringsgov.com/562/_Parking-Mobility), and a free shuttle will take you up to the station.

It’s a good idea to bring extra clothing so you can add layers of clothing as the railway climbs to 14,115 feet — then peel them off on the trip back. The summit can be much colder than Manitou Springs, which is 7,700 feet lower.

As you travel for nine miles up the mountain, watch for wildlife including elk, deer, bighorn sheep and the tiny marmots living among the rocks. For most of the trip, you’ll be traveling through forests of Colorado blue spruce, ponderosa pine and bristlecone pine.

Soon, the train is traveling above timberline, Pikes Peak’s bald head, on the last leg of your journey to the Summit House Complex.

But before going in, pause to enjoy the 360-degree views, which inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write the lyrics to “America the Beautiful” after an 1893 wagon trip to the summit.

Inside the visitors center, you’ll find interpretive exhibits about the mountain’s history, geography and climate.

You’ve probably worked up an appetite, so take a break for food in the dining area or on a terrace with a view. Then, sink your teeth into a high-altitude doughnut, made from a delicious recipe passed down since 1916. The doughnut machine is so large and heavy (1,500 pounds), it had to be moved in before the building was finished.

Everything, inside and out, is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act; all elements were designed and built to be environmentally responsible.

Before you head back down on the train, don’t forget to pick up some souvenirs. You can show them to your friends and family back home while you share stories of your adventures on Pikes Peak.

One heck of a staircase

T

he Manitou Incline has a well-earned, nationwide reputation as one of America’s greatest physical challenges. It attracts thousands of people, like moths to a flame.

However, we don’t want you to get burned, so we cannot stress this enough: The Incline is an extreme trail and should not be attempted if you have any doubts about your physical ability. Consulting your doctor first is not a bad idea.

The 2,768 steps — railroad ties — rise at an average grade of 47 percent, with the steepest section tilting at 68 percent.

Although people do make it to the top on their first attempt, there is no shame if you don’t. We encourage you to use common sense and “bail” if you’re not feeling up to going all the way.

There are several places where you can safely exit the Incline, the first being at tie No. 395 and then again at No. 1,300 (Northern Return Trail). Both trails connect to the Ute Trail (the trail to the right as you stand at

the Incline base) and offer a scenic return to your starting point.

Your final bailout opportunity is at tie 1,794, where you’ll find a bench to rest on and take in a magnificent view. Here you can access the Barr Trail, another scenic route for your return.

In 2019, an Eagle Scout added the numbered plates on every 100th tie to help track your progress. In December 2021, another scout installed a log bench near the Incline’s base, a great spot to catch your breath.

For inspiration, look at the bulletin board at the base of the Incline and read of the incredible personal records that Incliners have accomplished.

Other things to know: • Reservations are required and can be made about a month in advance at www. coloradosprings.gov/incline. If you don’t see spots available, the “no-show” rate runs very high so if you just show up you’ll have a good chance of getting on the trail; • Although you will see people returning down the Incline, we encourage you to

descend via Barr Trail (signs at the top will point your way), a more scenic and less steep return; • Remain on designated trails. Cutting switchbacks causes damaging erosion; • Leave No Trace: whatever you carry on your journey, pack it out; • Dogs are not allowed with the exception of service dogs; • During summer months; avoid busy weekend days; • Start in cooler, early-morning hours or after 4 p.m.; and • Take plenty of water; one liter per person is not too much.

When you visit the Incline, you’ll find plenty of encouragement and sound advice.

estled at the base of majestic Pikes Peak and a stone’s throw from the soaring rock formations of Garden of the Gods Park, Manitou Springs and the surrounding area offer plenty of trails for hiking enthusiasts of all abilities.

Intemann Trail: This trail is 4.5 miles in length and is rated easy to moderate. It has three access points: The Iron Springs trailhead on Ruxton Avenue near the Cog Railway, Crystal Park Road to the Crystal Park trailhead or 26th Street and Gold Camp Road to the Section 16 trailhead.

Barr Trail: This difficult trail is 12.6 miles one-way and gains 7,258 feet. The best way to get there is by taking the free shuttle from the east end of Memorial Park (500 block of Manitou Avenue). See page 16 for details. If you drive, take Manitou Avenue west to the roundabout and drive up Ruxton Avenue. Drive past the Cog Railway station and follow signs to the Barr Trail trailhead parking lot. Information: barrcamp.com/ getting-here/the-hike.

Garden of the Gods’ sandstone formations and stunning views have made the city park world-famous. In fact, it’s been named the United States’ No. 1 park and the world’s No. 2. Red Rock Canyon Open Space features 17 miles of trails winding around vertical rock formations, ponds, quarries and canyons. The official address is 3550 W. High St. Take Highway 24 east from Manitou to Ridge Road and turn south to the main entrance and parking lots. No amenities. Information: coloradosprings.gov/parks/page/ red-rock-canyon-open-space.

Bear Creek Regional Park and Nature Center has seven miles of easy and moderate trails. Take Highway 24 east to 26th Street, go south and

North Cheyenne Cañon and Stratton Open Space have easy, moderate and difficult trails. Trail maps are available at the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center, 2120 N. Cheyenne Canyon Road. Maps are also available at the Helen Hunt Falls Visitors Center, three miles above the discovery center. Information: coloradosprings.gov/parks or 719-385-5940.

Trails include: • The Columbine Trail is a moderate to difficult 4-mile trail with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. The Lower Columbine trailhead is behind the visitor center, the Mid-Columbine trailhead is one mile west of the center and the Upper Columbine trailhead is four miles west of the center. The trail is open to hikers, cyclists and equestrians.

• Mount Cutler Trail is a little more than 1 mile from the trailhead to the overlook east of the Mount Cutler summit. The trail gains 300 feet. The trailhead is on the south side of the road, about 1.5 miles from the main gate near the Starsmore Center. Only hikers are allowed.

• Seven Bridges Trail is a moderate trail about 1.5 miles one way with an elevation gain of 1,000 feet. It’s in Pike National Forest and crosses Cheyenne Creek over — you guessed it — seven bridges.

The trailhead is off the closed portion of Gold Camp Road on the west side. Parking is available at the intersection of Gold Camp Road, High Drive and Cheyenne Canyon Road. Hike past the gate and follow Gold Camp Road 0.7 miles to the trailhead. The trail is unmarked. Watch for the creek running under the road and the trailhead will be on your right.

• Silver Cascade Falls Trail is easy and measures one-third of a mile from Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center to the top of the falls. Park near the visitor center and walk over Helen Hunt Falls.

• St. Mary’s Falls is 1.2 miles from the parking area to the trailhead and 1.6 miles from the trailhead to the base. The elevation gain is 1,300 feet. Take 26th Street or Cheyenne Road to North Cheyenne Canyon Road and then to Gold Camp Road. The trailhead is about 1 mile past the locked gate at the intersection of North Cheyenne Canyon Road, Gold Camp Road and High Drive. Hike along Gold Camp Road to Tunnel No. 3. Follow the trail up and over the tunnel.

SACRED HEART PARISH www.sacredheartcos.org Originally, Sacred Heart was a mission of the oldest church in the diocese, Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Manitou Springs. Founded in 1888 in Colorado City, it was originally called St. Mary’s. In 1922, architect Thomas MacLaren built a new church in the Spanish Mission style at 2030 W. Colorado Ave., and it was renamed Sacred Heart.

In 1926, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate were invited to assume pastoral duties of Sacred Heart Bulletin file photo Church and OLPH as a mission. In Sacred Heart Church, Colorado Springs 1931, Holy Rosary Chapel in Cascade (4435 Holiday Trail) was added as a mission to the parish. In 1984, the Congregation of Holy Cross assumed pastoral duties and has served the parish ever since.

The parish mission is “to make God known, loved and served.”

OLPH was founded in 1860 and dedicated at its current location, 218 Ruxton Ave., in 1889. The little church burned down and was rebuilt in 1903 by the Gillis brothers. A Lourdes Grotto was added a year later.

Located halfway up the Ute Pass, Holy Rosary Chapel was built in memory of Thomas and Mary Green Cusack by their family and dedicated in 1931. The chapel is in a Romanesque style; architect Charles E. Thomas built it with local red rock.

ince our opening in August 2009, the Manitou Springs Heritage Center and Museum has served the community as a free museum offering a glimpse of Manitou’s unique past while introducing visitors to our vibrant town.

Today, the Heritage Center is fun central for several of our town’s events as well as a treasure trove of exhibits that capture the essence of Manitou’s history.

This year, our museum invites you to join us in celebrating Manitou Springs’ 150th anniversary. We kick off the celebration with our exciting new exhibit describing the events leading to our town’s founding.

Manitou was a 19th century leader in the battle against tuberculosis with its offering of health resorts, mountain air and mineral springs.

For generations beginning with the Ute Native Americans, visitors have here seeking the medicinal wonders of its effervescent mineral waters.

Health seekers traveled via railroads such as the Colorado Midland Railway and the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. They stayed in our grand hotels, such as the Manitou House, the Cliff House and the Iron Springs Hotel.

The history of Manitou’s Post Office is intriguing and helped spread the word about our town’s beautiful attractions, health resorts, points of interest like Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods, and our town’s mineral springs. Tourists came to explore our unique and beautiful architecture and experience outdoor activities including Pikes Peak burro trips, the Crystal Park Auto Road and the Cave of the Winds.

The 150th anniversary exhibit will also highlight interviews and the contributions of long-term residents, community builders and athletes who have set records and endured the physical demands of our mountain terrain and rarified air.

This year, the Manitou Springs Heritage Center and Museum will also present miniature exhibits inside the Spa Building’s rotunda and City Hall. Throughout July, our celebration of Manitou’s Sesquicentennial continues with the presentation of a play, “Merriments and Mystery: 150 Years of Manitou History.” The play will be performed on Fridays and Saturdays.

Our “Manitou Railroads” exhibit features the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, Manitou Incline and Manitou’s Other Incline — the Red Mountain Incline. Learn how the Inclines and the Cog Railway dominated the Manitou landscape and contributed to its growth as a tourist attraction.

Lately, much attention has been given to the reopening of the refurbished Cog and the completion of the Pikes Peak Summit House Complex. The Cog, as originally constructed, was regarded as one of our country’s greatest engineering feats at the time.

This year, we also celebrate the return of our “Pikes Peak Peanut Pusher” exhibit. Imagine making a drunken bet with your friends to push a peanut to Pikes Peak’s summit with the tip of your nose. This exhibit has reached such notoriety that it was featured on the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum,” and confirms our museum’s reputation for capturing “History with a Sense of Humor.”

Adding to the zaniness, the Heritage Center is sponsoring a Peanut Pusher who will brave the elements and push a peanut to the summit. The re-enactment will commence on Saturday, July 9, and continue throughout the following week.

Experience the development of the bottled mineral water industry in Manitou Springs. In the early 1900s, Manitou Springs, with its two competing bottling plants, was the capital of bottled mineral water.

Learn more about the mystery of the town’s “effervescent and healthful mineral spring waters” and see the Gusher Bottle, as well as the colorful bottles that helped put Manitou Springs on the world map.

The MSHC is a must-see stop on the First Friday Artwalk with our exhibit, “Van Briggle: The Manitou Connection.” See one of the largest exhibits of Van Briggle pottery in the Pikes Peak region.

n the book “Manitou, Saratoga of the West,” Sharon Cunningham wrote in her introduction that “The springs that bubbled in natural basins along the banks of the Fontaine qui Bouille at the foot of Pikes Peak naturally attracted the Indians.

“Mountain tribes traveling Ute Pass, and plains tribes following the banks of the stream, now called Fountain Creek, were awed by these effervescent pools, as well as by towering Pikes Peak, the strange rock formations of the Garden of the Gods, the beautiful streams and the abundance of game.

“Certainly a paradise, this was surely a gift from their universal god who controlled nature — a gift so respected that the area became sacred to the Ute, Comanche, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Arapahoe and Sioux nations. Anyone entering this neutral ground would lay down his arms and pass in peace.”

Many of the early explorations to the area documented the mineral springs as well and, as the nation’s population inched westward,

the mineral springs played an important part in the development of Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs. The latter was once referred to as the “Saratoga of the West,” intended to be a place of relaxation, beautiful scenery, fresh air and, of course, mineral water.

Today, you can enjoy the same benefits that early travelers enjoyed, and then some. Manitou offers beautiful scenery, fresh air, relaxed atmosphere and mineral water available 24/7 from fonts around town, easily accessible and ready to refresh. The mineral water is free and folks travel from miles around to taste the waters, fill jugs and relax in the “Valley of the Mineral Springs.”

f you’re visiting Manitou Springs/Old Colorado City for the first time and you’re an art lover, guess what? You’ve struck gold!

With more than 25 art galleries and co-ops featuring talented local artists to nationally renowned names you might recognize, the 5-milelong Colorado/Manitou Avenue corridor is, perhaps, the best-kept secret around.

While you’re vacationing here, think about a gallery-hopping day. The experience you’ll have visiting gallery after gallery on a bright summer day may well become one of your most memorable experiences here. If you’re a fan of a certain kind of art, the list below will help you select the specific art galleries you’ll want to make a part of your tour.

Ancient culture preserved for modern times A

nasazi cliff dwellings, built more than 700 years ago, await visitors at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. Preserved under a protective red sandstone overhang, there are no “Do Not Touch” signs for visitors. Everyone is free to touch and go inside these fascinating architectural remnants of a Native American culture that inhabited the Southwest’s Four Corners area from 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1300.

Next to the cliff dwellings is a three-story Pueblo-style building, which houses the Anasazi museum and a Southwestern gift shop.

This structure was designed and constructed in the architectural style of the Pueblo Indians, descendants of the Anasazi people.

The gift shop offers Native American hand-made jewelry, artifacts, ceramics and crafts, along with books and DVDs on the Ancestral Puebloans’ culture.

This outdoor archaeological and natural history preserve includes reproductions of a mesa-top stone building and an Anasazi oven. A nature walk with well-labeled native flowers, herbs, trees and other plants connects the cliff dwellings and the Pueblo structure.

It’s easy to spend a whole day at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings.

he North Pole-Santa’s Workshop theme park at the foot of Pikes Peak has two dozen family-friendly rides, an aerial tram, miniature train, animals, magician’s show and gift shop. And, of course, Santa and his elves are the stars of the show.

The park is on the side of a mountain with an altitude of 7,500 feet. To say that Colorado weather is unpredictable is an understatement, so come prepared for anything.

A few tips to help make your visit as pleasant as possible: • Dress appropriately for the mountains and the possibility of rain and thunderstorms in the summer and snow in the fall.

• Come as early in the day as is possible; rain showers and other precipitation usually hit in the afternoons.

• Always wear comfortable shoes (tennis shoes are best), as the park has very hilly terrain.

• The park is handicap-accessible, but keep in mind that it’s on the side of a mountain.

It takes a very strong and fit individual to push a wheelchair around the park.

• The park rents strollers ($3 for all day), but not wagons or wheelchairs.

Santa is always ready to welcome kids of all ages.

• Pets are not allowed in the park.

• Call before coming if the weather has been bad. The park is open, weather permitting.

It could close down for extreme fog or rain, accumulation of snow and extreme drops in temperature.

Hankering for the Old West?

he charming qualities of the Old West are not lost completely to the modern world. Today, people can do more than just read about it, watch a film on it or view a vintage photograph.

The pristine prairie land nestled against the Front Range foothills can still be experienced as if looking through the eyes of a frontiersman. Riding on horseback in the Garden of the Gods will take anybody back in time.

Historically, about five riding stables serviced visitors to the Garden of the Gods. Academy Riding Stables, established in 1937, stands alone in the new millennium, offering this unique experience.

The guided trail rides begin with a 15- to 20-minute safety briefing. This includes riding basics such as how to make the horse stop, go and turn. Most visitors have little to no experience with horseback riding.

From the greenhorn who never sat on a horse to the seasoned rider, Academy guides (also called wranglers or cowboys) match each person to a horse that fits his or her experience level.

Riders can choose between a one-hour or two-hour ride in the Garden of the Gods. From the 8-year-old child to the 80-year “young” great-grandparent, this leisurely ride around the famous park promises to be exciting, fun and unforgettable. It may even feel like a journey to the past.

Why go horseback riding in the Garden of the Gods? You’ll see the park the way our ancestors did 100 years ago. The sights include formations such as Sleeping Giant, Snakehead Rock, Kissing Camels and Balanced Rock. Like a cowboy of the Wild West, the rider experiences these red rocks in a way that is unlike any other — on horseback.

Although horseback riders must be at least 8 years old, younger children can experience a taste of the West on pony rides.

Colorado City characters C

olorado City was founded in 1859, 12 years before Gen. William Jackson Palmer’s surveying party drove the first stake of Colorado Springs. Only a couple of miles east of its predecessor, the general’s genteel little city on the banks of Monument Creek was everything that Colorado City wasn’t.

Palmer’s city banned manufacturing industries, racetracks, gambling, breweries, distilleries, liquor sales, saloons and bawdy houses; Colorado City welcomed them all.

The rip-roaring little city’s streets were full of adventurers, scammers, hard-drinking miners and other original souls who wouldn’t have lasted a week in Colorado Springs’ staid precincts.

Here are a few of the larger-than-life characters who helped define a rollicking, dangerous era in Pikes Peak region history.

“EAT ’EM UP” JAKE “Eat ’Em Up” Jake (last name unknown), an itinerant gambler and con man, came by his nickname in a high-stakes poker game in Colorado City in 1889. Here’s how the Pittsburgh Press reported the story 13 years later, on Sept. 11, 1902.

“Money was plentiful and gambling was easy enough (in Colorado City),” the paper reported, “but the stranger had to be on the square.

Crookedness in a game of cards simply meant death to the man who practiced it and the average stranger was not willing to take the chance.”

But “Eat ’Em Up” was not your average stranger. As the Press delicately put it, “… he suddenly found himself in a hole at a big game of poker, and he had staked his last cent. The pot was a four-figure pot. He had in some way secured an extra card in the deal. He had a hand that it would take a royal to beat, but he had an extra card and he was in a fearful dilemma.

“He knew that if he slipped the card up his sleeve or hid it about his person in any way he would get shot. The players had just ordered a round of sandwiches. His sandwich was placed before him on the table and he picked it up and catching the attention of the other players diverted somewhat, he slipped his extra card in between the slices of bread and began to eat it with the hurry and relish of a starving beggar.”

The scam worked, the pot was his, and he worked the con successfully throughout the west. According to the Press, he retired from his life of crime after a few years and joined the police force in an undisclosed Southern city, “a rattling good fellow and an efficient officer.”

SOAPY SMITH

A gambler, saloonkeeper, political fixer and criminal boss, Soapy Smith

successfully practiced his trade for two decades in cities throughout the west.

He first specialized in so-called “short cons,” quick street performances that drew crowds unfamiliar with classic con games. An accomplished magician and sleight-of-hand artist, Smith easily persuaded naïve Midwesterners to bet on three-card Monte and variants of the shell game.

But Soapy created his own game, which Jeff Smith described in his engaging 2009 biography of the infamous scamster. The “prize soap racket” required masterful sleight of hand and the cooperation of several accomplices.

Smith set up his “tripe and keister” (a display case on a folding stand), and arranged ordinary 2-cent bars of soap on the keister top. As a crowd began to gather, he’d wrap paper money around a few of the bars in amounts ranging from $1 to $100. Then he wrapped each bar with plain paper, and mixed them with wrapped bars containing no money.

He’d offer them to the crowd for $1 each. One of his accomplices would buy a bar, unwrap it and display the money he had just won.

Egged on by Smith’s skillful patter, the suckers bought bar after bar, never suspecting that the game was rigged.

Toward the end of the sale, Smith would announce that the $100 bar remained in the pile, then auction off the remaining bars to the highest bidders.

Soapy ran the scam for more than 20 years, using the proceeds to help build extensive criminal empires in Denver, Creede and Skagway, Alaska, where he died in a gunfight on July 8, 1896. The Skagway News covered the story with a memorable headline.

“Soapy Smith’s Last Bluff Called by Frank Reid — Dead in a Moment, Shot Through Heart.”

LAURA BELL Born in Missouri in 1861, Bell had a difficult and chaotic childhood.

Her father was committed to an insane asylum when she was a child. She married in her teens, bore a child and made her way to Colorado, where she settled in Salida in 1881.

She apparently divorced her first husband and subsequently married Tom McDaniel, a murderous crook who persuaded Bell to burn down her house for the insurance. McDaniel quarreled with the ex-con he’d hired to torch the place, a gunfight ensued and McDaniel shot his former employee five times while Laura looked on screaming.

Bell left Salida soon after and reappeared in Colorado City in 1888, without McDaniel. She may have initially worked as a prostitute, but she Continued on page 39

Colorado City characters (cont.) soon became Colorado City’s most famous and successful madam, running her business from 1889 to 1917, when she died in an automobile accident.

According to Jan MacKell’s 2003 book “Brothels, Bordellos and Bad Girls: Prostitution in Colorado 1860-1930,” the one-time charge for one of Laura Bell’s girls was $250. In an era when most careers were closed to women, and skilled workmen were lucky to make $5 a day, the world’s oldest profession must have had a certain appeal.

Bell’s pricing structure, which is confirmed by contemporary documents, was sustainable because she catered to the Colorado Springs elite.

The discovery of gold in Cripple Creek created a newly rich and extravagant population of mining millionaires, who may have formed her client base.

Ever the sensible businessperson, Bell paid off cops and judges, contributed generously to churches and charitable organizations and lived discreetly — so much so that no photos or contemporary descriptions of the famous “Queen of the Tenderloin” endure.

We know that she was smart and we presume that she was once beautiful, but what little knowledge we have comes from court records and the fanciful accounts of her contemporaries, such as …

In 1888, John O’Byrne was a young passenger brakeman between Denver and Colorado Springs on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. But that was just a job — his true calling lay elsewhere.

In the spring of ’88, O’Byrne acquired a pair of orphaned elk, took them home and “broke them to drive single and double.” Contemporary photographs show the two antlered beasts in harness pulling a modest open carriage their owner is driving. The elk were dazzling, disruptive and a source of great amusement to Prairie Dog. In his 1922 autobiography, he gleefully describes an afternoon’s excursion in Denver.

“My Elk team was always unwelcome in Denver; the society people of Capitol Hill in Denver had many fine turn-outs with blooded horses and expensive broughams and cheap drivers, and they took many fast rides away from me and my Elk team when the horses would get a smell of my Elk. I have seen as many as three runaways at one time, women screaming at the top of their voices and the driver hanging on for dear life.”

Predictably, the Denver cops banned Prairie Dog from Capitol Hill, but the animals were always welcome in Colorado City.

“It made no difference what time day or night you came to Colorado City,” O’Byrne wrote, “the excitement and amusement were continuous.

If we did not see two or three gun plays or one or two shot, we considered business pretty quiet.”

In a memorable piece of doggerel, Prairie Dog recalled those good times.

“In Old Town I cut quite a dash; I took many pains to spend all my cash and I drove through the streets with Laura Bell by my side – a span of Elk, how fine we did ride!”

But the good times came to an end as the Cripple Creek boom ended, the saloons closed and Colorado City faded slowly away. Prairie Dog mourned.

“Old Town isn’t what it used to be, times have made a wonderful change and today Old Town resembles an old dog with the mange.”

But O’Byrne might enjoy today’s bustling Old Colorado City, with its restored 19th century buildings housing shops, restaurants, galleries and even a saloon or two. No gambling halls though, but Prairie Dog would be pleased to note that his elk are memorialized by a restaurant bearing their names — Thunder and Buttons, 2415 W. Colorado Ave.

Festival thinks outside the box G

reen Mountain Falls is just a short, winding trip west on U.S. Highway 24 from Manitou Springs. Every summer, the small, quiet town becomes a vibrant hotbed of visual, performing and culinary arts — and so much more — that will entertain, inform and intrigue people of all ages.

How did this happen? It really started more than a century ago, when an Oklahoma family sought refuge from the hot summers and fell in love with the little town in the valley.

Christian Keesee, a descendant, also fell in love with Green Mountain Falls and decided to invite people to experience a variety of cultural offerings. With the able support of New York choreographer Larry Keigwin and Executive Director Scott Levy, the Green Box Arts Festival has grown exponentially.

The 14th annual event, which runs June 18 to July 4, boasts more than 50 performances, events, classes and camps. The centerpiece will be Colorado’s first James Turrell Skyspace, which will also be the first in the world to be carved into a mountainside.

Visitors can hike a trail to the site, where the world-renowned light and space artist has created a unique kinetic experience.

“James Turrell is known for cultivating peaceful and powerful environmental works of art that focus on human perception,” Keesee said. “His Skyspaces may be understood as creative observatories — a combination of architecture, sculpture, and atmosphere perfectly positioned in nature.”

But wait, there’s more, including three additional installations: “Communication X9,” by Israeli artist Yaacov Agam; “Meltwater,” by Green Box artist-in-residence Michael Krondl; and a new Keith Haring Outdoor Fitness Court®.

And then there’s dance: members of the New York-based Ballet Hispánico will bring their grace and technical skills to Green Mountain Falls and provide masterclasses in contemporary dance throughout Southern Colorado.

The Opening Night Block Party will include a spoken word performance by Ashley Cornelius, poet laureate of the Pikes Peak region, and a concert from the Tejon Street Corner Thieves.

The festival closes with the annual July 4 event, this time featuring The Denver Dolls and Latin Grammy winner Twanguero.

The Barker House is on the National Register of Historic Places.

BARKER HOUSE, 819 MANITOU AVE. In 1881, a former teacher and hotel manager named Charles Barker bought the Pine Cottage, built circa 1872. Barker renamed the structure and expanded it into a “first-class guesthouse.”

By about 1890, Barker had spent more than $20,000 expanding the 110-room hotel into one of Colorado’s best lodging establishments.

It was the first in Manitou to have a hydraulic elevator and became known for its excellent food and service.

In 1890, Barker transformed the building by adding the towers to create a Queen Anne-style structure.

Barker’s “addition addiction” depleted his finances and, in 1897, he had to sell his namesake hotel but stayed on as manager until his 1905 death.

After years of neglect, the stately grand dame was showing its age: the foundation was crumbling, which led to sagging floors and cracking ceilings. It also needed new plumbing, electrical and heating systems.

The Barker House was restored in the 1980s and transformed into 48 one-bedroom and efficiency apartments.

The jewels of Manitou Springs (cont.) and clean air would improve his health. The 14,000-square-foot structure incorporates nine architectural styles that Francolon had seen while traveling the world with his father, a diplomat.

See if you can spot these styles: shingle-style Queen Anne, Romanesque, English Tudor, Flemish stepped gables, domestic Elizabethan, Venetian Ogee, Byzantine, Moorish and half-timber Chateau.

Now owned and operated by the Manitou Springs Historical Society, the castle has been a tuberculosis sanitarium operated by the Sisters of Mercy, a boarding house for wealthy visitors, a retreat for clergy and an apartment house.

Today, visitors can wander through 30 rooms full of authentic furnishings and art before having tea (and delicious sandwiches and desserts) in the Queen’s Parlour. The men collaborated on many business ventures that would shape the region.

Bell married his childhood sweetheart, Cara Scovell, in 1872, and she was instrumental in making Briarhurst the community’s social center. The couple welcomed friends and family to the town, helping to shape it as a haven for British high society.

In 1886, the house burned and the family lost almost everything.

The next spring, they returned to Manitou to begin construction of an even more elaborate home. It included a schoolroom, a conservatory, a cloister and a library, all enclosed by pink sandstone walls.

Dr. Bell died in 1921 and the property has passed through many hands in the century since.

Today, it is a meticulously preserved restaurant and event venue that carries on its tradition as a welcoming and beautiful place.

CARNEGIE LIBRARY, 701 MANITOU AVE.

In 1910, local physician H.M. Ogilbee persuaded the Andrew Carnegie Foundation to donate $6,000 for a library. The city purchased properties at the current site and removed six existing buildings.

Ground was broken in 1910, and the classical Italian Renaissance library opened Feb. 22, 1911, becoming one of more than 2,500 Carnegie-funded libraries around the world.

Scottish architect Thomas MacLaren designed the library, which is one of 30 Carnegies that were built in Colorado. Less than half of those still operate as libraries.

In 1911, Manitou Springs’ population was fewer than 1,400. The population has grown to more than 5,500 residents, but the library has not kept pace with that growth or evolving ideas about a library’s role in the community.

The Pikes Peak Library District has temporarily relocated its operations to the Manitou Art Center, 513 and 515 Manitou Ave. Funds are being raised to expand and modernize the city-owned building while respecting its Carnegie-MacLaren pedigree.

In 1873 — before Colorado gained statehood — what we now call the Cliff House at Pikes Peak began welcoming guests.

Originally a stagecoach stop on the route to Leadville, the structure became a 20-room boarding house known as The Inn. It hosted trappers and hunters exploring the Rocky Mountains and future millionaires on their way to the Leadville mines.

By the early 1880s, Manitou was attracting people who wanted to drink from the area’s mineral springs. In 1886, Edward E. Nichols bought The Inn and renamed it the Cliff House.

It also underwent a personality change, becoming a sophisticated resort for the wealthy seeking the healthful, sparkling waters. The greatly expanded building hosted such luminaries as Theodore Roosevelt, P.T. Barnum, Thomas Edison and Clark Gable, who enjoyed sumptuous dinners and evening concerts.

In the decades since, the Cliff The Cliff House has survived and flourished through the decades.

House has survived flooding and fire, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Thanks to visionary owners, its artful blend of Victorian elegance and modern convenience continues to attract visitors to downtown Manitou Springs.

ure, you can take the winding roads to Cripple Creek to indulge in the casinos, but this well-preserved Victorian-era town has a lot more to offer.

Your first stop should be the Cripple Creek Heritage and Information Center, on your right just before you drop down into the city on Colorado Highway 67.

State-of-the-art interactive technology will give you a look at the region’s gold-mining history and its geologic and human history through the ages. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. every day, and admission is free. 9283 S. Colorado Highway 67; information: 689- 3315.

Right across the highway, you’ll see the Mollie Kathleen mine, which takes visitors 1,000 feet (about the height of the Empire State Building) into the Earth. Mollie Kathleen Gortner staked her claim in 1891 and the mine operated until 1961. Information: 689-2466.

In 1900 alone, this area produced more than $18 million in gold (equivalent to about $553 million these days), more than two-thirds of Colorado’s gold production that year.

When the mines played out, most of the people left and the district’s mining towns entered a long period of slumber. But modern technology has allowed mining companies to extract the remaining gold, so you’ll see activity in Teller County’s foothills.

Once you enter the city limits, watch for the Cripple Creek District Museum on your left, just before the highway turns right and becomes Bennett Avenue. Originally the Midland Railroad Terminal, constructed in 1895, this fascinating place has been preserving Cripple Creek history since 1953.

Wander freely through the complex, which also includes the 1893 Colorado Trading & Transfer building, an authentic mine headframe and the Assay Office, where hopeful miners brought their ore to find out if they’d struck it rich. Information: cripplecreekmuseum.com and 689-9540.

There’s plenty of parking for the museum and the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad station, built in 1894, next to the museum. There, it’s all aboard for a trip back in time, chuffing along behind a restored steam locomotive.

Other attractions in Cripple Creek are the Butte Theater (139 E. Bennett Ave., buttetheater.com, 689-6402), where melodrama reigns supreme; the Outlaws and Lawmen Jail Museum (136 W. Bennett Ave.), housed in the original Teller County Jail; and the Old Homestead House (353 Myers Ave., www.oldhomesteadhouse.com, 6899090), where “soiled doves” welcomed “gentleman callers.”

As you roam through town and check out shops, galleries and restaurants, watch for the donkey herd. The story goes that they’re descendants of the pack animals that miners used.

The donkeys are on a healthy-treat diet, and love carrots, apples and the donkey nuggets you can find at local museums, shops and the grocery store. No processed or junk food for these jacks and jennys.

Cripple Creek’s neighbor, Victor, is also worth a look-see. Take Highway 67 south from Bennett Avenue and go almost 5 miles to “the City of Gold Mines,” where old mine headframes loom over the well-preserved buildings and homes.

While there, visit the Victor Lowell Thomas Museum, 298 Victor Ave., which celebrates the native son who went on to worldwide fame as a radio broadcaster. Information: victormuseum.com or 685-5509.

T

he Rocky Mountain Dinosaur Resource Center in Woodland Park is about 20 minutes away from Manitou Springs, but you’ll journey eons back in time when you get there.

The RMDRC houses a world-class paleontology lab, a museum filled with skeletons and other specimens, and a gift shop. Visitors can peek through windows to see what the staff is working on, watch a video or touch selected displays.

The center’s paleontologists go out on digs in Kansas, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming, searching for fossils of dinosaurs, flying mammals and the aquatic critters that swam the ancient ocean.

They always find something interesting.

They’ll carefully remove the specimen and its surrounding soil or rock and wrap it up for the trip back to the lab. There, the scientists will study the specimen, clean it and prepare it for molding and casting.

The RMDRC supplies the world’s museums and universities with replica skeletons, painstakingly created from the originals. That way, the prehistoric bones will not be drilled into for mounting and, thanks to 3D printers, missing bones can be duplicated for display.

Those displays are mind-boggling, with everything from a T. rex to a nest of dinosaur eggs. You can wander through on your own or take a guided tour.

“I always recommend that people take the tour, because our tour guides are just so full of knowledge. You’ll get so much more out of your experience,” said RMDRC President JJ Triebold.

She co-founded the center with her husband, Mike, who has participated in many of those digs.

And don’t forget to look for souvenirs — which include actual specimens.

“We like to think we have the best dinosaur store in the world. If there’s a dinosaur in it, on it or about it, we try to have it in our gift store,” JJ Triebold said.

Known for a thriving roster of local musicians and a packed schedule, venues have positioned themselves as the place to be for live music enthusiasts and the musicians they love.

What’s in store for the summer ahead?

Beloved local favorites like the Red Mountain Boys and the Psychedelegates are are sure to appear, as are small-but-mighty acts like Joe Johnson and All Aboard. Whatever your genre of choice, be it folk, classic covers, indie rock or even the occasional raucous death metal act, there is certainly a show for everyone this summer.

Not to be outdone, the Manitou Music Foundation (MMF) has also built its own roster of fun events, including appearances by Roma Ransom and the West Side Rhythm Kings at the Manitou Springs Colorado Wine Festival (Memorial Park, 502 Manitou Ave.) on June 4 and the MMF Courtesy of A Music Company Deck Fest on June 18.

The Reminders will perform during the Music on the Mesa series.

Deck Fest will feature performances at popular venues Lulu’s, Trails End Taproom and the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort.

Lastly, the Manitou Springs Library has long been in the live music game with its popular Library Lawn Concert Series. This summer will be no exception, with regular Wednesday concerts in June and July.

Attendees are invited to pack blankets and chairs and enjoy a variety of acts on the lawn of the former Manitou Springs Carnegie Library building (701 Manitou Ave.). Jazz, Celtic, rock and folk are just a sample of the genres to be expected. See schedule on page 19.
