It’s is one of the closest state parks to the ELENA TRAPP Pikes Peak region and features some of the best ZK BRADLEY turning-aspen-grove views in the state.

“Colors peak around the end of September,” COLORADO PUBLISHING HOUSE said Brian Kerrigan, park manager at Mueller.

“And, visitors can catch a great view of the Chairman of the Board changing aspens from just about anywhere in JOHN WEISS the park.”

Circulation Coordinator Mueller boasts more than 55 miles of trails and TIM KRANZ includes 132 forested campsites. Reservations for campsites are highly recommended and the park offers a variety of activities that are fun for the entire family. The park also features a campers’ services center that includes showers and laundry facilities as well.

Summer may be fading, but sunny days year-round mean rafting isn’t out of the question in autumn.

“For visitors willing to get out of the car and hike around, we recommend the Elk Meadows Trail,” Kerrigan said. “It’s a fairly easy trail that features rolling hills and a lot of aspen groves and meadows with aspens backing up against them. Some of the best photo opportunities lie on the trail down to the old Cheeseman Ranch.”

Lathrop State Park near Walsenburg sits roughly 90 miles from Colorado Springs and provides a great option for travelers who want superior hiking opportunities while being surrounded by astonishing vistas and peaks from three different mountain ranges. The park fea-

tures two side-by-side lakes — one for motor boating and another for paddle sports (canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding).

Lathrop is open for all activities, weather permitting, through September.

“Lathrop State Park is one of those hidden gems,” Vogrin said. “It includes an archery range and a walking trail that takes visitors around the perimeter of the lakes, plus, there’s a golf course nextdoor, so visitors can get a variety of activities in, in one place.”

History buffs and those seeking to view some fascinating geological formations can venture a bit farther south to Trinidad Lake State Park.

The massive park covers nearly 20,000 acres, features the Purgatoire River and Reservoir and is a relative haven for anglers and bird watch-

ers. It’s also one of the few places on the planet where the K-T Boundary is exposed.

“Scientists travel the world to find evidence of the K-T Boundary,” Vogrin said. “It’s a layer of ash that suffocated most life, including the dinosaurs, about 65 million years ago, following the impact of a massive asteroid on the Yucatan Peninsula.”

Scientists define the boundary as a geological signature (a thin layer of rock) and say there are no dinosaur bones above the K-T Boundary. Visitors who want to view the boundary can find it on a hillside along a road in the park, and the park visitor center has all the information visitors will need.

Just outside of the town of Trinidad, travelers can find Colorado’s Highway of Legends Scenic and Historic Byway. The scenic byway takes visitors on an 82-mile loop from Trinidad to Walsenberg. They’ll view volcanic formations near the Spanish Peaks and geological features known as the Dakota Wall and Devil’s Stair Steps that seem similar to the Garden of the Gods and Boulder’s Flat Irons.

Service members and families can’t get any closer to home than Cheyenne Mountain State Park. The entrance is just across Highway 115 from Fort Carson.

“For those who would like to test themselves, Cheyenne Mountain State Park opened a summit trail just last year,” Vogrin said. “Visitors can hike to the top of Cheyenne Mountain via the Dixon Trail, which features one of kind views of Colorado Springs and the Front Range. Hikers can start at the visitors center via the Limekiln Trail and hook up with the Dixon Trail further up.”

A roughly half our drive south rests Lake Pueblo State Park, the most visited park in Colorado. It’s known for its boating activities and will be busy throughout the fall. Boaters can launch until Oct. 15 and can even hand launch their craft after that date.

Anglers, cyclists and motorcyclists can also find late season activity opportunities at the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area near the town of Salida, a two-hour drive from Colorado Springs. Anglers can find walk-and-wade or float fishing opportunities throughout the scenic Arkansas Valley.

For families who want to take their furry friends along for a recreation experience, pets are welcome at Lake Pueblo, Lathrop and at Staunton State park, located six miles west of Conifer in Jefferson County. Staunton includes dramatic outcroppings, a waterfall and several streams.

Fall arts and culture: a snapshot C

olorado Springs is rich with arts and cultural entertainment options for kids, adults and whole families alike. The city hosts a wide range of performing arts venues, from the prestigious Pikes Peak Center to the UCCS-backed Theatreworks company and more. Below, we’ve picked a few fun, offbeat productions set to take place in the last months of 2019 that should provide a great way to enrich a night out.

But these are only a few of the myriad cultural events happening in the Springs all of the time. That’s even truer in October, which is National Arts Month. How can a person stay informed and up-to-date on all of the plays, concerts and art shows happening in town? Millibo Art Theatre 1626 S. Tejon St., 719-465-6321, themat.org Owned and operated by Jim Jackson, executive director, and Birgitta De Pree, artistic director, the Millibo Art Theater, known also as the MAT, stands a stone’s throw away from the popular Ivywild School. This little theater hosts a variety of performances for all ages, and that’s no boilerplate. Their Kids First series features performance specifically for younger kids and their families, ranging from adaptations of Aesop’s fables to puppet shows to circus-style performances — Jackson is a seasoned veteran of clowning. Through their Premieres series, they host a rainbow of new and novel works. For instance, on Sept. 6-8, the MAT will host a show called Mythico.

Produced by Aerial Aura, this family-friendly show is an interpretation of a variety of Greek gods and myths, set to an original musical score. Aerial Aura will feature the aerial talents of 11 local performers, including Aerial Aura co-founders Emily and Chris Wegert. The MAT will release their full calendar of performances, including Kids First and Premieres shows, soon. Your best way to get that calendar is to swing by the MAT itself and pick one up.

The FAC hosts a massive collection of Native American and Southwestern regional art, offering a one-of-a-kind glimpse into cultures indigenous and colonial that have called the Southwestern U.S. home. But don’t mistake this cultural institution for a house of dead cultures. Take, for

instance, the FAC’s vibrant performing arts program, which includes an upcoming concert performance of Carrie the Musical, scheduled for Friday, Oct. 25. Adapted from Stephen King’s novel Carrie, Carrie the Musical debuted in England and on Broadway in 1988. While the original run was considered a flop, to the point where it was immortalized in Ken Mandelbaum’s Not Since Carrie which examined Broadway’s biggest flops, revivals have taken home awards and gained traction. In 2019, the FAC’s performing arts program was also nominated for 26 Henry Awards by the Colorado Theatre Guild, so be

On Nov. 15-17, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College will host the 32nd annual Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Festival. The festival honors the necessity of different perspectives by helping women filmmakers share their works with wider audiences.

Subjects range from lighthearted to heavy and impactful, but there’s a little something for everyone.

The organizing organization, the Rocky Mountain Women’s Film Institute, operates the Madelyn Osur film library, which allows members access to a selection of films from the last 25 years of the festival. Springs Ensemble Theatre 1903 E. Cache La Poudre St., 357-3080, springsensembletheatre.org The Springs Ensemble Theatre is one of a few smaller theater companies in the Springs, standing apart by an unflinching and inventive approach to its subject matters. Good theater starts conversations in the car ride home and long after, and SET’s past productions of The Elephant Man, The Laramie Project and others are sure to do just that. From Dec. 5-22, SET will stage Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar. But as the company has done with public domain scripts in the past, what they’re saving on rights, they’ll invest into making the performance one of a kind. In this case, they plan to flip the genders of every character in the play. Will that change the dynamics between Caesar and the Roman senate? It’ll be interesting to find out either way. Sports a way to build muscle, comraderie

s the weather begins to change, so do the days of swimming and tanning.

Luckily, even when the weather turns in Colorado, there are still many options to explore if you’re looking to engage in sports, whether it’s playing or watching.

CJ Thornton, fitness center assistant at Schriever Air Force Base, said the best fall sport to play on a military base is football.

“Our football intramural season typically runs to the end of September and is a great way to boost unit morale,” he said. “Being able to play against another

unit on base brings out unit pride through competition and fair play.”

Intramural sports can be found outside the military too, as Play it Now Sports and SoccerHaus offer intramurals year round.

Play it Now Sports offers adult volleyball and flag football, as well as children’s sports including soccer, basketball, flag football, volleyball, dodgeball, baseball, T-ball and archery.

Juli Yim, outdoor recreation director at Schriever AFB, said from an outdoor rec perspective, fly-fishing and hunting are generally great this time of year.

“Rock climbing, hiking and mud runs are also fun to participate in for fall,” she added.

If you do not have access to a military base, Colorado Springs offers rock climbing year round at places including CityROCK and the Springs Climbing Center.

CityROCK offers beginner, adult and children’s classes and an indoor cave.

The Springs Climbing Center offers drop-in visits, day passes, belay lessons, private lessons and memberships.

Additionally, for $15 a month on top of a membership, the climbing center offers a 24/7 training room dedicated to climbing training and conditioning.

If you are looking to enjoy sports from the comfort of your own home, the fall is a great time to tune into sports on television.

at Schriever AFB, said while the regular Major League Baseball season is long and can very boring, watching the World Series can be one of the most exciting things on TV. “I’m not really sure why, but a highly contested baseball game always keeps me on the edge of my seat; even if my favorite team isn’t playing,” he said. “I also really enjoy the start of the NFL season and following my favorite college football team.”

Cannello added fall is the perfect time to watch sports.

“There’s something about the smell of fall as the temperature drop and leaves change colors that bring back memories of playing football when I was a teen,” he said. “It’s

Although Cannello doesn’t like watching sports with others, he understands the appeal.

“It’s too distracting, but I know a lot of people that come together to root their favorite football (either college or pro) teams on,” he said. “Potlucks and fantasy draft parties are the norm around this time of year.

“College football is starting this weekend and nothing brings people together more than watching your favorite teams, eating barbecue and just being around your friends” he said. “Being able to bring everyone together and have a passionate debate about which team is better is what being a fan is all about. We have no idea what the future holds for our teams, but we all have the same hope: They win a championship.”

Yim said she’s more of a rugby fan.

“The 2019-2020 Premiership Rugby starts Sept. 20, with the regular season starting in January,” she said.

Both Cannello and Thornton agree watching sports can create bonding moments.

“It’s funny how sports can bring folks together even if they don’t agree on who they want to win,” Cannello said. “I think everyone has a competitive spirit that tries to get out there — whether you’re actually playing a sport or if you’re simply watching one.”

Outdoor enthusiasts teach wilderness skills

uring his work as a search-andrescue team leader in Virginia, Matt Sargent encountered many people who got into trouble because they weren’t prepared to handle unexpected events in the wilderness.

Mountain Marrow, the company Sargent founded with his wife, Alex Braha, and Colorado native Aaron Hutchings, is designed to teach hikers, campers and backwoods adventurers how to stay safe and what to do when things go wrong.

The company offers courses and wilderness experiences that focus not just on survival, but on tools, knowledge and skills that can make an outdoor trip more enjoyable for kids and adults. It also offers team-building expeditions for businesses.

“We can take someone who’s never been outside and make them comfortable with it,” Sargent said. “People who have camped all their lives can still learn something new.”

The courses are taught at Glen Isle Resort near Bailey and on Mountain Marrow property outside Cripple Creek.

The company name embodies the power and energy symbolized by bone marrow, a concentrated source of essential nutrition.

The founders didn’t want to use the word survival, since their courses offer much more than survival skills.

Sargent spent much of his childhood on his grandparents’ 120-acre farm in the Shenandoah Valley, where he loved exploring the natural world, fishing in a pond and spending time in the farm’s wooded areas.

After finishing school in Winchester, Va., he attended Nashville Auto Diesel College, where he earned a diploma in automotive refinishing and collision repair. He was

employed by an auto body shop for three and a half years, until he decided that profession wasn’t for him. Then came a series of jobs in construction and private security.

Along the way, he volunteered with search-and-rescue organizations and participated in operations in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina. A registered Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and certified tracker, he trained with top survival and wilderness living experts.

Sargent’s direction changed when he met Braha, a Colorado Springs native who worked as a business and political management consultant in the Washington, D.C. area and started her own business, K. Alexandra Strategies.

“I grew up knowing how to run a business,” said Braha, whose parents owned the popular Pasta di Solazzi restaurant.

“My mom had me on a milk cart when I was 5, running the cash register.”

to Colorado to visit Alex’s family. It was Sargent’s first trip to the state, and he was impressed.

The couple realized they had the makings of a company, pairing Sargent’s outdoor knowledge and skills with Braha’s business acumen. The plan for Mountain Marrow solidified when Sargent met Hutchings at a training event in the Ozarks.

They developed a curriculum linking knowledge of indigenous people with current technologies, as well as their own skills.

Hutchings’ experience as a dog trainer for the Marine Corps led to a course on camping with canines that’s titled Hike With Spike. His ability to keep a group of youngsters engaged and entertained for hours sparked a course called Wild Child, “a combination of just getting kids excited and learning some things about the outdoors, but also giving them the skills to be safe,” Sargent said.

The team also developed a two-day introductory course, a six-day survival course on how to make it through 72 hours in the wilderness and a weekend family camping adventure, among others.

Courses range in price from $65 for the one-day Wild Child class to $699 for a sixday Advanced Adventurer experience.

Land navigation — awareness of surroundings and “something as simple as realizing I followed this stream all the way in” — is a skill that cuts through all of the courses, Sargent said.

Another basic tenet: “At a bare minimum, let someone know where you’re going,” he said. “Best is, don’t go by yourself.”

Much of the wisdom Sargent and Hutchings share is based on an ounce of prevention.

“People either are very underprepared or overprepared,” Sargent said. If a storm rolls in or you get lost, “you’re going to wish you were overprepared.”

Preparation and training can keep a minor inconvenience from turning into a ruined weekend, and save lives.

But Mountain Marrow also teaches fun skills, such as how to start a fire with a water bottle and using a knife safely to make chopsticks if you forget utensils.

Though still a fledgling business, Mountain Marrow has already taught more than 500 adventurers how to enjoy and be safe in the wilderness.

“We want to get involved with some of the schools and give back to the community,” Braha said. “And we want to feed into Colorado Springs being a destination for outdoor stuff. Mountain Marrow is one part of that.”

Farm and Art Market helps vendors thrive

arah Hamilton greets a customer by name at the Colorado Farm and Art Market, and they spend a few minutes catching up before Hamilton rings up the purchase of freshly harvested greens, herbs and flowers.

Hamilton is in her third year owning and running New Roots Farm, a 5-acre family operation near Cañon City. She raises crops organically using natural pestcontrol methods and sustainable practices including building healthy soil.

Customers know and seek out New Roots Farm at the Colorado Farm and Art Market, one of Hamilton’s principal outlets for her produce.

“The shoppers that come to CFAM are people who truly care about where their food is coming from,” Hamilton said.

“So they’re willing to have the patience for things to be in season and are very understanding and very excited and appreciative to buy our produce, which is very gratifying.”

That’s exactly what the market was de-

signed to do — attract customers so small farmers, artists and artisans can survive, said manager Natalie Seals as she surveyed the thriving scene at the market at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.

Colorado Farm and Art Market operates the downtown market on Wednesdays and also hosts a Saturday market at the Margarita at Pine Creek.

“The big advantage is building up a customer base with personalized, one-on-one interactions,” Seals said. “These are not staff members that are sitting in a store and some CEO somewhere is making money.

These are people that are creating everything that they sell, and you can talk to them and share their passion.

“You can find out exactly why this vendor who does these body care products that are all natural, exactly what inspired him to want to make these products; why this vendor who grows microgreens, what drives him to grow these organic, local microgreens. ... You don’t get that at Walmart.”

The Colorado Farm and Art Market, formed 15 years ago, is organized as a cooperative, a legal entity owned and oper-

ated by its vendor members, who do about $300,000 in sales through the markets each year.

“The vendors get a vote in how this cooperative is run,” said Seals, who is the only paid employee. “We’re not a nonprofit, but we don’t make a profit. Any money that comes in just goes right back to making these vendors successful.

“We’re definitely growing,” she said.

“Last year’s sales were 18 percent higher than the year before, and we’ve been somewhere in the 15-20 percent range [of growth] since 2014.”

Seals said the market currently has about 50 regular members and another 20 guest vendors. Not all attend each and every market session, but those who do contribute a percentage of sales to the market each day.

The market has served as a support for vendor members and as an incubator for new businesses.

“This is all small businesses trying to get off the ground,” Seals said. “There are quite a few businesses that were CFAM that are in storefronts now.”

Pikes Peak Lemonade and Cacao Chemistry gourmet chocolates, both downtown businesses, got their start at the market. So did Radiantly Raw, an organic chocolate business located in Manitou Springs and Old Colorado City.

During the off-season, the cooperative helps members by connecting them with people who can help them develop their business plans and accounting.

Hamilton has been around the market since it was founded; her mother, Susan Gordon, ran Venetucci Farm for many years and was one of CFAM’s founding farmers.

“CFAM was founded because all the truly local Colorado farmers were going to all the other markets around Colorado

Springs and having to compete with really big farms that are often just resellers … selling produce that wasn’t necessarily in season for Colorado,” Hamilton said.

“That’s why they banded together to form this cooperative market where the requirement is that you actually produce and grow what you sell and that it is local to Colorado.”

The market has moved around quite a bit since its founding but now has procured favorable locations downtown and at the Margarita.

Hamilton said her sales at the market represent about 30 to 40 percent of her business. She also sells through a community supported agriculture association.

Doug Wiley, owner of Larga Vista Ranch near Boone, produces meat and dairy products and offers vegetables later in the season. Seals, a founding member, said the co-op has been a lifesaver.

“I was rebuilding my business when we started this back in 2004,” Wiley said. “I was doing more direct marketing, and we weren’t able to get into any other market stream, so we started our own,” said Wiley, who also sells through the Arkansas Valley Organic Growers CSA. “It’s helped us get exposure and gain new customers.”

Wiley said his pasture-raised pork is his best seller.

“It’s just the way we raise those hogs out in the field,” he said. “They get to roam and graze. They’re not all jammed up in some little container; they live the way pigs should live. It’s a taste all its own.”

Belonging to the co-op means that, as a part owner, he puts more into it, he said.

“I probably wouldn’t have stayed with the farmers market otherwise,” he said. “It’s a lot of work. The longer you’re a member, the more you benefit.”

Floorball is a modern variation of floor hockey that was first introduced in Sweden back in early 1970s. It is played on a gym floor with lightweight sticks, a whiffle like ball and the players wear sneakers. There is a focus on safety and skill over physical strength with rules disallowing any intentional body or stick checking. The simplicity of floorball makes it very adaptable. It can be played on any hard surface and modified based on the size of the play area. All it takes is a stick and a ball. This makes it a sport with a low cost to enter.
