His nickname is Herkimer, and for around 70 years, he’s guided tourists to a place that boasts the largest private insect collection in the world, the May Natural History Museum. The insect-averse will be glad to know that the museum’s over 100,000 specimens are mounted, while those who think bugs and butterflies are cool can see over 7,000 different species in this long-standing museum.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park 410 JL Ranch Heights, tinyurl.com/z2swe9kw What’s better than the great outdoors? Due south of Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, Cheyenne Mountain State Park hosts 28 miles of trails, perfect for families at a wide range of fitness levels to lace up their hiking boots or bust out the bicycles. Also noteworthy, the park has year-round camping sites, as well as restroom facilities and picnic areas, so it’s a great place to enjoy the outdoors for a bit. It’s also worth noting that most hiking trails in the park are not dogfriendly, so check online and plan accordingly. The park also hosts events all year round, ranging from wildflower walks to guided night hikes to, this Father’s Day, a cornhole tournament. but there’s nothing else like it in the world. Starting in 1969, Jim Bishop started hand-building a stone cottage for himself and his wife as a wilderness getaway, but with time, effort, a little goading from the neighbors and a heroic dose of mission creep, the one-room getaway grew into a 160-foot tall castle, complete with its own chapel, steeples, bells and even a fire-breathing dragon — a heck of a “wow” factor for all ages. It’s open all week, admission costs nothing, all tours are self-guided and it’s funded by donations and proceeds from the gift shop.

Paint Mines Interpretive Park 29950 Paint Mine Road, Calhan, tinyurl.com/3hycf3hm Rock formations can be beautiful for their size, shape and color, and it’s the color that really strikes hikers at Paint Mines Interpretive Park. There, where erosion has sliced through the prairie over the millennia, exposed formations bear striking bands of tan, white and pinkish-purple clay, a visual treat. This colorful stuff was used by Native American tribes of the area to add color to pottery, and archaeological evidence points to human activity there 9,000 years ago. These days, it’s illegal to climb on or remove anything from the formations, but the trails offer amazing views of the formations, and it’s a great spot for a picnic, though it’s important to note that no dogs are allowed.

It’s neat to see just how big (and just how small) the differences are between dogs and modern wolves, and the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center offers guests the opportunity to observe a variety of rescued wolves and foxes on the educational tours offered by this wildlife sanctuary. The two-hour event offers an avenue for Airmen, Guardians and their families to decompress after the first Friday of each
month — hence the name. Hundreds of attendees and their families gathered at the softball fields for food, drinks and chatter to celebrate the occasion. Eric McCullough, 50th Force Support Squadron community cohesion coordinator, is one of the event’s several organizers and said they strive to accommodate all
who attend. “We’ll always have free entertainment, whether that’s a band, DJ,or a talent contest for everyone and their families to enjoy,” McCullough said. “The family part is always important because they’re just as much part of the military as the Airmen and Guardians. “Just like we want our members to have a good time and relax,” he said, “we want the same for the family unit. They can come out, get free food and start the weekend off with a good frame of mind.” McCullough emphasized the importance of morale among the force. He understands the arduous tasks Airmen and Guardians endure and seeks to alleviate that pressure with events throughout the year. While speaking about First Friday, McCullough peeked at a poster hanging on his office wall. In yellow, the words ‘Summer Slam’ hover above a BMX biker performing a stunt with a crowd in the background. Summer Slam is the base picnic held each July and involves a slew of events and entertainment for eventgoers. “We’re hoping to get back to more of that this summer,” McCullough said. “We’ll have live music, a BMX stunt team and a whole bunch of surprises. It’s great to have these back because it was difficult not having these events last year to help with our mission.” One of 50th FSS’s missions includes providing, “high-quality morale, welfare,

Spouse club eases military life By Scott Prater
M
oving to an unfamiliar place can be a daunting experience for anyone. For a young parent whose spouse has deployed or is away from home for long periods, it can be downright overwhelming. Spouses face a number of challenges as soon as they arrive at a new military post. Service members are often tasked with military duties upon their arrival, so spouses are left to handle all of the logistical, legal and administrative tasks associated with moving the family across the country. That’s one reason Jami Thomas always joins her new local military spouses club before she even departs her previous location. “I want to make those connections with people I know are in the same boat as I am,” she said. “For one thing, you don’t know what you don’t know. So, connecting with spouses who are already established on a military installation really clues you into the things that can make your transition smoother.” Take for instance the issue of arriving at a new home with no household goods. How does one feed their family, find a dry towel or even have a place to sit? At Fort Carson, the Mountain Post Spouses Club (MPSC) manages the on-post thrift shop. Families who need vital household supplies can find them there, along with a friendly, welcoming face and an encouraging word. Settling in is one thing, but escaping isolation and loneliness is an issue all on its own, especially this past year, when the pandemic essentially stopped people from gathering at times. “When we first arrived here, I knew I would have to get

But, with their events, they also provide spouses with something to anticipate and get excited about.” Calling the MPSC a club is a bit of a misnomer. Years ago, military spouses clubs were often exclusive in their member-selection process and many just hosted a few social
events each year. At Fort Carson, the MPSC has been open to spouses of all ranks for several years and it has a tiered membership-fee structure. Its leaders prefer to take on more of a role that emphasizes support and mentorship of their fellow spouses as opposed to simply hosting events for a chosen few. See Spouse page 14

The Museum that Works
The lure of GOLD brought prospectors and miners to the wild west. Industries and towns grew up around the mining sites to give us what is now our beautiful Pikes Peak region. Visit the Western Museum of Mining and Industry to experience the thrills and dangers of that era. You’ll see real WORKING machinery, including a 35 ton, 1895 Corliss Steam Engine. See a model mining drift — walk through a mine-shaft without the claustrophobia. Try out the new interactive “Mining in America” exhibit, and the way too cool Fluorescent Minerals Room — a 360° dark room with glowing rocks! This summer, head to WMMI for FAMILY DAYS when many of the outdoor machines run, including the 1920’s Osgood Steam Shovel— the same kind that built the Panama Canal. Plus, feel the power of the huge Stamp Mill, which crushes rocks in search of gold! There are hayrides, blacksmithing and gold panning. Each month features special exhibitors like Robotics, Model A cars or ham radio operators. Family days are June 12, July 10 and August 7. Connections and guidance on preparing federal resumes recently cinched Katrina Atkins’ position as an education counselor at Peterson Air Force Base. “I’m a military spouse with a lot of education and hardly any experience,” reflects Katrina, but it wasn’t until she connected with Mt. Carmel Veterans Service Center two years ago that she was able to access tactile experience through the Americorps program at CSU Pueblo. “Part of my Americorps job was going to Peterson to give education briefs. I had applied to several of the same positions for over two years but it wasn’t until I had a connection that I got the job. Because they knew me, I was a direct hire with no interview,” says Katrina. “When I applied this time, Mt. Carmel helped me with my federal resume, which was a deterrent for the previous applications,” she says. If you are a military spouse ready to join the workforce, please reach out. Air Force Family Chooses St. Peter Catholic School
Julie and Brian Malloy have a combined 48 years of military service, have been stationed in over 12 locations and been deployed four times. As parents of three children, outstanding education is a priority. Julie shares her experience with St. Peter Catholic School: “Returning to the Colorado Springs area, where there are so many military families, was a specific goal for our family. We first started at St. Peter Catholic School in 2013 when our oldest daughter was in 2nd grade. Our two boys were both in preschool and we were absolutely hooked on the school after their first year. It was a pleasant surprise for us and our children to find so many other kids from military families. Our shared military experiences give us something in common and our bonds within the school are strengthened knowing we can rely on our military connections for rides to and from school or sports, if needed. The military community at St. Peter is a family within a larger family of warm and welcoming people. This school is an absolute jewel and we frequently and enthusiastically recommend St. Peter to our military friends and coworkers relocating to the Springs. It is wonderful that we have an abundance of military peers who opt to enroll their children in St. Peter. “This school is unlike any other school because of the true sense of community. The teachers and administration know each student on a personal level, they genuinely care about the students, and our kids have developed a strong appetite for learning. “The dedication of teachers and staff was never more evident than when students were welcomed for full-time, in-person learning in August of 2020. I’m extremely grateful our children were nurtured academically and socially with minimal disruptions in the midst of a pandemic. “We came to St. Peter for the top-tier, unparalleled education for our
kids in a faith-based environment. And we have gotten it! But alongside this tremendous education, we’ve also acquired friends that are like family, exceptional communication from all teachers, and a variety of extracurricular activities including sports, science club, music lessons and drama. We couldn’t be happier with our choice of St. Peter Catholic School.” Catholic Classical Education at St. Peter St. Peter Catholic School offers exceptional educational opportunities for students age three through eighth grade using a Classical Education model that utilizes Socratic Seminar, Institute for Excellence in Writing, Shurley Grammar, and Latin (middle school). Our curriculum encourages questions and curiosity and helps students build habits of inquiry, wonder, memory, attention and thought. By inspiring curiosity and compelling the pursuit of truth, our students are allowed to flourish in an educational environment that provides a foundation for advanced studies in all disciplines. Compassion, love, respect and family are hallmarks of the character and morality elements of the curriculum and are traits that are taught and exemplified by the students, staff and school families. The classical curriculum is enhanced with enrichment offerings of Spanish, music, art, P.E. and after-school sports and band. Preschool St. Peter Catholic Preschool is available to three- and four-year-olds who have completed potty training. Our preschool provides a safe and secure environment where children can discover the world around them. Children are able to choose from a variety of activities in the classroom, which will enhance their social, physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual development. We offer extended care before and after school.
Catholic Classical Education for prek through 8th grade
St. Peter Catholic School in Monument offers preschool thru 8th grade and provides superior academics and faith formation in a safe, caring community where each child is accepted and respected. With an average class size of 18 students, every student gets the attention and specialization he or she needs. Athletics and arts are offered in addition to a curriculum that is an alternative to Common Core and independent of public school testing requirements. Financial aid is available.

Spouse From page 12
“Our group of spouses spans the horizon,” Thomas, now the club’s current president, said. “And, we have members who live on other military installations in the area. So, we want to be inclusive and make everyone feel welcome.” As for events, the group managed to host four events, since September, where it could bring in up to 50 people. Thomas said the events and functions are important because they provide connectivity for spouses, as well as a safe space to meet people. “When (COVID-19 restrictions) tightened up again, our events went virtual, she said. “We did crafts during a few events, hosted virtual trivia and interactive type activities. There was always something available for spouses virtually. This April was month of the military child, so we wanted to recognize military kids with an event. Just trying to meet people where they were was a high priority for the group during the pandemic.” Spouses can choose to be as active in the club as they choose, from just showing up for events to taking on a role on one of the group’s leadership boards. On the mentorship side, more seasoned members often relay the types of information spouses need to keep abreast of military activities, from explaining the military rank structure to how units operate and train. “Nobody wants to feel like they’re being kept in the dark,” Thomas said. “In that regard, we really try to educate spouses about what they can expect when their spouse’s unit is due to deploy or leave on an extended training mission. There are a lot tasks that need to be completed in those types of circumstances, such as completing powers of attorney and the different official military forms. But, there are also resources available that can assist. This kind of stuff is completely new for a military spouse, especially those with young children, and they often don’t about these help-

military ball. “I’d never heard of Operation Deploy Your Dress before coming to Fort Carson,” Stewart said. “It can be hard to find a dress, not to mention expensive, and many spouses can’t fit that type of expense into their budget.” Thomas explained that one of MPSC’s most important goals is to help spouses in any way it can, whether that be through relaying an understanding of military operations, or this last year, reacting to the COVID-19 restrictions and safety measures on post. “When you’re a spouse and your kids are home and you can’t get away, that’s a lot,” Thomas said. “Our spouses needed their own thing, even if that was sitting in a closet with a glass of wine while they connected with other people. That was important to them. So, that’s what we did. Not hav— Katie Stewart ing a function was not an option. In the beginning we used Zoom, but we knew at that point that we were going to have to get creative. So, we created cookies and cocktails, a virtual function, and other similar events.” Now that restrictions have eased, the MPSC held its annual awards ceremony last week to a limited socially distant audience. “We just had an indoor board meeting for the first time since I can remember,” Thomas said. “When I walked into the room, I realized that I love hearing the buzz of conversation. People were seeing each other for the first time, live in 3D. It was exciting. Now of course, we’re heading into the season where military families change duty stations. A lot of us will be saying our goodbyes and then welcoming in a whole new set of spouses.” To learn more about MPSC visit www.mpsc.us

As mentioned earlier, the MPSC manages the on-post thrift shop. Revenue generated through operations and fund-raising efforts throughout the year goes toward the MPSC grant and scholarship fund. This past month MPSC awarded more than $100,000 in educational and community grants and scholarships to individuals and local organizations who applied throughout the calendar year. It also conducts campaigns to assist spouses in specific areas. A few years ago, the group started the Operation Deploy Your Dress campaign, which provides gowns for spouses who would normally be unable to attend a formal
