ummer in Colorado will undoubtedly look different this year thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Heck, baseball enthusiasts will be lucky to see the Colorado Rockies play a single game this season. This virus has truly put the kibosh on large gatherings and a vast array of pasttimes.

But this is Colorado and nature’s spoils offer

another avenue to blow off some steam during safer-at-home restrictions.

On May 11, Gov. Jared Polis announced Colorado Parks and Wildlife could reopen state parks on May 12, providing an option for the day, night or weekend trip with family and/or friends – while socially distancing, of course.

Here are some recreational activities and the things you'll need to do them.

During the week of Polis’ announcement, 26 state parks reopened at half capacity. Though it’s great to have choices, it’s also important to understand how to remain safe while camping.

“It’s always good practice that someone who is not going with you knows where you’re going, where you’re going to be, when you’re going and when you should be back,” said Juli Yim, Schriever Air Force Base Outdoor Recreation director. “If something happens and no one knows where you’re at, that’s bad. If you alert someone, they can alert rescue services if need be. Also, make sure you have plenty of fresh, potable water with you or a means to produce potable water.”

Yim also advised exploring the campground prior to the trip. While it’s vital to have the right equipment, it’s just as vital to know the area.

“It’s critical that you know who is around you as well as wildlife and weather,” Yim said.

can’t get out of [trouble] by yourself.”

Acquiring the proper equipment and gear is just as critical. Schriever and Peterson’s Outdoor Recreation facilities provide gear for Department of Defense cardholders.

“Often times the cost is fairly nominal and inexpensive,” said Jake Eyermann, Pe t e r s on A i r Forc e B a s e O ut d o or Recreation director. “We have camping equipment like tents and sleeping bags – all of which get cleaned when they come back – those are $10 for a tent and $5 for sleeping bags per day. Travel and camping trailers are reasonable compared to what you find in the commercial arena. Those are $75 per day for a 20-foot travel trailer.

There is a cost, but it’s greatly reduced from what you find outside our gates.”

While Eyermann expects campsites to look different, especially for experienced campers, he added, "It'd still be worth the trip."

“I read on CPW’s Twitter, it said, ‘Plan as if you’re going to the moon,’” Eyermann said. “Plan and bring everything you need, top off your gas tank, do what’s necessary. Just ensure you have what you need and be self-sufficient.”

Eyermann wants walkers, runners, bikers and hikers to discover more of Colorado.

“I don’t just encourage them to visit [trails], but I want them to find their second- or third-favorite,” Eyermann said.

“My passion is to create opportunities and facilitate those. It’s important for our spirit and mentality to get out there and see some of those beautiful Colorado views.

Whatever we can do to help, we’re here to do that.”

Thomas said it’s her first time on her stand-up paddle board this year and she wanted to take advantage of the good weather.

Walking, hiking, running and cycling require few materials and nearly everyone – in groups of fewer than 10 – can participate. Each provides another avenue for airmen to exercise and Eyermann recommends they introduce one into their routine.

“I live downtown but I try to commute on my bike a few times per week,” he said.

“Even if you’re in the dorms or live close to base, I’d encourage you to bike, walk or run to get to that [location]. It’s good to

But don't fret. Rafts can be rented as long as users abide by social distancing guidelines. Each county also has specific rules listed on cpw.state.co.us.

There’s also fishing for those who prefer a quiet, relaxing day without getting drenched.

“Things like fishing make it where you don’t have to be right next to each other,” Yim said. “Especially if you’re fly fishing, where you really want to spread out.”

“Everyone has their daily stress – we all have it in one form or another,” Yim said.

“Exercise in itself is a great stress release for a lot of people. It gets your endorphins going. ... Be sure to get out and enjoy the outdoors.”

Auto shop a compelling option during pandemic shutdown “I do all the work on my truck here at the shop,” he said. “Next week, I’m coming back to work on the rear differential, but I can pretty much do everything here.”

Besides tools and equipment, the shop includes Automotive Service Excellencecertified mechanics, who can help users troubleshoot problems and assist with specific issues. Many times, the staff mechanics will jump right in and turn a wrench.

“We’re not going to do the work for a customer, but we can provide instruction and guidance and make sure someone is doing a repair or maintenance the right way,” said Tom Woditsch, Fort Carson ASC manager. “This takes a lot of the uncertainty of a job for people and helps them feel more confident when they come back to do their next job.”

A

s sporting events are cancelled, tourist destinations are shutdown, bars and restaurants remain shuttered and even shopping venues continue to lock out customers during the global pandemic, it can be difficult for service members to find places to go and things to do.

Stay-at-home and stop-movement orders also remain in effect, and as many service members remain on limited duty, there’s simply not much to do to kill that boredom and pent-up stir-crazy feeling.

For do-it-yourself types, those looking to

save some serious cash or those hoping to find something productive, the Fort Carson Auto Skill’s Center (ASC) presents a compelling option.

Following a brief closure early in Fort Carson’s COVID-19 response posture, the ASC reopened to active duty military personnel only in late April.

“We had to take some steps and put some restrictions in place to ensure the safety of our users and staff, but Fort Carson leaders decided it was a good idea to reopen some of our morale, welfare and recreation activities, like the golf course and outdoor recreation center,” said Mike Hubbard, act-

ing ASC manager. “We determined we could manage the shop in such a way that people could maintain proper social distancing while they repaired and maintained their cars.”

Of course, folks can work on their cars in their own garage or driveway, but doing so is much more difficult and time consuming.

The ASC has every tool someone might need for any job. Plus, it has vehicle lifts, which make tire replacements, oil changes and any under-carriage work a relative snap.

Woditsch is currently in Germany, as he traveled there on a short trip before the COVID-19 pandemic spread globally. He plans to return to Colorado when possible, but until then, he’ll continue to stay in contact with Hubbard and the ASC staff.

“Managing from afar has created definite challenges.” he said. “But, I was elated to learn that Army leadership decided to reopen the shop. “This is an unprecedented time, and we had to figure a lot of operational things out to make it happen, but we want to provide this service for service members. With people being stuck at home they have limited opportunities to do something productive, so the ASC provides a lot of value. People can get out and do their oil changes, rotate their tires, replace brake pads, make repairs and have a rewarding experience.”

For now, the shop is open limited hours on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and strict pandemic response measures have been enacted to ensure customer and staff safety – all users must provide and wear their own gloves and face coverings, and staff deep clean and disinfect the entire shop following operational hours, for instance.

Staff have also separated work areas (every other work bay is closed) to comply with social distancing guidelines.

“We’ve also restricted the types of repairs and maintenance that our customers can perform,” Woditsch said. “Normally, we get a lot of hobbyists who come to modify their vehicles or they’ll have special projects.

That’s a vital part of our business, and we want to get those hobbyists back in, but for now we’re limiting work to just what is necessary to keep a car either safe or running.”

Though it’s easy to imagine a grimy atmosphere, people may be surprised to find a modern, state-of-the-art auto workshop when they walk through the doors.

The ASC caters to customers on a firstcome first-served basis. No reservations are taken and all users must hold a DoD ID card and a Fort Carson shop card to use the ASC. To gain a shop card, users must attend a short shop-safety course, which is offered regularly.

For now, the ASC is open only to active duty service members from all branches, but staff plan to open to veterans, reservists and civilians who have access to Fort Carson as soon as pandemic response measures are relaxed. “The safety of Soldiers has to be our top priority,” Woditsch said. “Our staff has taken this seriously.

We have to handle this the right way and show that we’re deserving of being one of the first recreational facilities open. That said, we’ve been surprised at the level of coordination between service members and staff.”

Baking bread offers a sense of comfort were just there, but now they can be a lifeline, literally, to knowing you’re not alone. There’s someone else out there doing the same thing. Feeling the same thing. Share those feelings [you’re experiencing] with somebody.”

For those interested in trying their hand at bread-baking, author Joy Demorra shared a recipe for a peasant loaf that has gained notable popularity online. It requires no special equipment beyond a mug, an oven and a baking sheet — she uses a mixing bowl but says it’s optional for bakers who don’t mind more mess. Every measurement is based on the size of the mug. Check it out below.

Ingredients: • 2.5 mugs all-purpose flour (or whole wheat, if desired) • 1 packet (about 8.75 grams) dry yeast • 1 mug warm water • Salt, fine-ground (e.g., not big kosher flakes)

he last couple months have been hard on everyone.

That said, people are finding new ways to cope with the isolation and anxiety, with one of the more surprising tactics being bread-baking. Amateur bakers have been making their first loaves and posting pictures all over social media. As a result, yeast has been hard to come by. John Heilman, vice president of yeast manufacturing at international baking ingredient company AB Mauri, called the demand unprecedented in USA Today, and the same article cites Nielsen market research data saying that, in the four weeks ending April 11, yeast sales jumped 410 percent.

Local therapist Paul Gross says he has noticed people who weren’t baking before starting to bake, and he says it makes sense.

“If I said to you, what does baking bread smell like, you could instantly smell it in your nose,” Gross said. “You could basically trigger memories because our sense of smell is the strongest sense we have associated with memories.”

Many people have positive associations with the smell of baking bread. It’s comforting and homey in a meaningful way, and not just because, for many, bread is a comfort food. The fact that baking results in an immediate, tangible accomplishment only reinforces that association. Unlike, say, a well-ordered spreadsheet, it’s there to be seen, touched and, eventually, eaten.

There can also be benefit in the actual manipulation of the dough. For some, busy hands can make it easier to process or express difficult or complicated thoughts.

“I have folks who come in my office and I’ll hand them a fidget cube or a fidget spinner, just because they need to keep their hands busy,” Gross said. “It calms [them] down

so they can talk, they can get their thoughts out, or they’re not concentrating too much.”

What Gross describes sounds like mindfulness or certain forms of meditation: Focus or distract the mind so it gets out of its own way. When people talk about mindfulness or living a day at a time, that’s along the lines of what they mean.

Whatever the value of meditation, it’s important to note that baking should be another tool for coping with isolation, not the only tool. Gross said that, like anything, too much can become a problem, so it’s important to have multiple hobbies.

In a bowl, combine all-purpose flour with yeast. Put enough salt in the measuring mug to just coat the bottom, then add that to the dry ingredients and blend by hand. Add warm water and combine by hand until a sticky but firm dough forms. Add flour or water if necessary to achieve desired texture— it’s not uncommon for whole wheat dough to come out drier. Lift the dough, lightly flour the inside of the bowl, then set the dough down. Cover the bowl with a dishcloth or plastic wrap and set aside to rise for an hour, or until doubled in size.

Lightly flour a clean work surface and dust hands with flour, then gently turn the dough out onto the surface.

Smooth the dough into a circular shape. Gently stretch a corner of the dough, then fold it back in on itself. Rotate, stretch, fold and repeat until the dough resists stretching.

Flip the dough over and smooth the dough into a round shape by lifting and tucking excess dough from the sides into the base of the loaf. Dust a baking sheet with flour, then set the dough on it. Cover and let rise for an hour.

Preheat an oven to 400 degrees. Set a second baking sheet or other oven-safe vessel on the bottom-most rack, and pour one mug of water into it — do not pour water into the base of an oven.

Immediately before putting the bread into the oven, use a sharp knife to score an “x” in the top of the loaf. Bake for 30 minutes, then check. If the top is burning, cover it with aluminum foil. Either way, continue to bake for an additional 15 minutes. To check doneness, tap the base of the loaf. If it sounds hollow, it’s done. If not, bake upside-down for an additional five minutes, then check again. Once done, cool on a wire rack for 20 to 30 minutes before slicing. (Not an experienced baker? Store in a cool, dry place — not a refrigerator — for up to two days, in an airtight container for three to four days, or freeze and store as long as necessary.

—Paul Gross “If all that’s keeping [someone] holding on right now is just the act of making bread, I don’t want to tell them to stop,” he said. “[But] there’s a whole bunch of places you can call to say, hey, what coping skills can I [try]? Every therapist that I know right now is doing telehealth and can get people in pretty quick.”

Further, Gross said it’s important to stay connected to others. For the would-be bread-bakers, maybe that looks like joining a social media group or raising up a sourdough starter from a friend’s starter. It could be a lot of things.

But the details aren’t the point.

“Don’t be alone,” he said. “Talk to somebody online, on the phone, [through a] chat program, whatever. Before they

Healthy, responsible digital distractions during quarantine

T

here’s a balance to be struck between the easy entertainment of a screen and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle. That said, as Covid-19 safety procedures continue, it seems like much of the average American’s socialization diet will have to stay online.

It’s easy to fall into a pattern of too much screen time at the best of times, so under current circumstances, it’s all the more crucial to be mindful and deliberate about digital entertainment.

The internet, including much of social media, isn’t kid- or family-friendly. Facebook and Instagram’s apps are both rated T for ages 13 and up on the Google Play store, and Twitter is rated M for mature audiences ages 17 and up — these content ratings are not arbitrary or accidental. The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act limits the amount of data that companies can collect from children and bans them from marketing to children under 13. Websites rarely if ever have formal age verification, but according to a report from the national nonprofit Family Online Safety Institute, “Those calling for formalized age verification mechanisms should note that they are all too often ineffective, and counter to the prevailing data minimization aim of COPPA, which limits and protects the personally identifiable information of mi-

nors.” It falls to parents to teach their kids to keep their personal information private as a matter of online safety.

More specifically speaking about social media, for many youths, it’s their only way to stay socially connected during the summer or while in quarantine. FOSI suggests parents work with their teens to learn about

and set safety and privacy settings on social media. It’s also important for parents and teens to discuss what is and isn’t appropriate to post, as well as how to deal with others’ bad behavior and how teens can curate their online experience and avoid inappropriate or unwanted content. Yes, that means parents need to understand the websites and

apps their kids use — FOSI recommends using both research and hands-on familiarization. It’s a time consuming task, especially given the byzantine-at-best nature of internet culture. And it’s even harder to balance rules and consequences with giving teens the respect and space they need to grow. But the basics of good parenting translate to the internet just fine, including setting good examples and communicating.

With all of that said, the internet is full of fun, educational content for kids and families to enjoy together. For young children, it’s tempting to default to YouTube Kids, but that site has problems with meaningless and/or disturbing content made to rack up views and, thus, money through autoplay algorithms. While YouTube has quality educational or entertainment channels for nearly any subject, it’s better to make YouTube a supervised activity. It’s worth checking out seemingly innocuous content for older kids, too. For example, YouTube entertainer/comedian PewDiePie, who has over 100 million subscribers on his channel, has repeatedly faced controversy for racist and anti-semitic remarks in some of his videos, as well as directing his fans to more overtly bigoted content creators — Aja Romano wrote an article for Vox on the matter in December 2018. Consider instead using YouTube for a family karaoke night or doing exercise videos together.

direct young kids through sites operated by known kid-friendly organizations, such as PBSKids.org, howstuffworks.com or disney. com. Consider also looking for the websites of local kid-friendly and educational institutions. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science hosts a wide range of videos and activities on their “DMNS at home” subpage. The Pikes Peak Library District also holds a huge array of virtual activities for kids and teens alike, including digital escape rooms, craft and exercise shows and a “kids at home” art show. The library’s summer adventure program has programs for pre-teen and teenaged kids, both of which have been designed to accommodate social distancing recommendations. PPLD also offers a variety of digital rentals, including audiobooks, ebooks, music, streaming movies and more, all free.

Keeping families active and safe has its challenges, but technology can help in that way, too. Most obvious: some video games, called active video games, are designed to make players exercise as they play. Most AVGs aren’t a total fitness solution, according to Sam Kirk, a PhD candidate in sport and exercise psychology at Leeds Beckett University, but they do help players be more active than they would otherwise. In an April 2020 article on academic/journalism site The Conversation, Kirk wrote that a recent Nintendo Switch release, Ring Fit Adventure, does provide moderate to vigorous physical activity and musclestrengthening activities, though frequent gym goers will likely find its challenges underwhelming. In a scholarly article for

the International Journal of Serious Games, Kirk also notes that many AVGs tend to lack quality and variety compared to other games, and they don’t tend to sell as well.

Still, he notes that augmented reality games have shown better results.

Pokemon Go, for instance, has been on the market since 2016, and its gameplay requires players to walk or bike significant distances to catch Pokemon, hatch eggs, gather items, capture “gyms” and more.

Though less wildly popular than when it was ubiquitous in summer of 2016, it still

Many other companies also produce mobile active video games or augmented reality games. Consider also games like Zombies, Run!, a mobile fitness game that augments a player’s real, GPS-tracked run with narrative content.

here are so many reasons why you should plant a garden right now. Research keeps telling us that planting and tending green things reduces depression and anxiety and increases psychological well-being and cognitive function.

Just digging in the dirt apparently frees up microbes that, when inhaled, can stimulate production of serotonin,making us happier.

So although you may be a beginner, and your garden only a pot of herbs (and maybe a tomato vine), your plants will reconnect you to the Earth.

Larry’s Top 7 1. Sun: Full-day sun is a must. Eight hours of direct sun is a minimum. Vegetables here in Colorado Springs do not grow well in the shade.

2. Soil: Use good, rich, crumbly, organic soil. Adding mushroom compost is good, as is your own homemade compost.

3. Warmth: Plants need warm weather to grow. Root vegetables, leafy greens, onions and peas can be planted in cool (not below 40 degrees Fahrenheit) weather. Tomatoes, peppers, squash and beans need the soil temperature to be above 55 degrees before being planted or seeded.

4. Consistent care: Visit your garden daily, water when needed and check for bugs or disease.

5. Harvest veggies at their peak: Harvest lettuce when it is young (old lettuce is bitter), and once beans start to form they should be checked daily. Zucchini can go from 6 inches long (great size) to 12 inches (too big) almost overnight.

6. Provide seasonal protection: Use antihail netting over hoop tunnels to keep hail from damaging your plants. When transplanting out small veggies, protect them with a 1-gallon clear plastic milk jug with the bottom cut out and top left off. Remove in 10 days.

7. Fertilize regularly: Every three to four weeks use the recommended amount of a good organic fertilizer. After fruits form on your tomato plants or peppers fertil-

ize using just one-third the recommended amount.

His secret garden tips • Grow

a garden no bigger than you can joyfully take care of.

• Never

plant in a dry hole. When you dig the hole for your tomato plant, add a generous amount of water to the hole. Remove the tomato from the pot and gently place it into the water in the hole. Once the root ball is thoroughly moistened, tuck soil in and around your newly planted vegetable.

• “The best fertilizer is the gardener’s shad-

ow” (author unknown). This implies that the time you spend in the garden carefully tending your plants is the best thing for your plants.

• If you are making a new raised bed, use at

least 50 percent of your own soil from your yard (if the soil is extremely poor quality then this tip is not for you). Mix that with 50 percent of a good quality soil mix. Ask your local nursery or garden center for advice.

• If you don’t have much space, plant herbs

and salad greens. They both grow well in containers and will give you the most produce for the space. Herbs can turn ordinary meals into gourmet feasts, and greens (lettuce, kale, spinach, Swiss chard) are very nutritious.

No dirt? No worries Sprouting lets you do your farming indoors

I

f you want to garden but don’t have access to an outdoor space, you can still grow a bumper crop of sprout varieties in jars on your kitchen counter. Sprouts — the edible first growth from germinated seed — are loaded with antioxidants, proteins, vitamins and minerals and can make crunchy flavor magic happen on otherwise basic salads and sandwiches. Your harvest might include one fresh flavor or a mix, from alfalfa, clover, mustard, radish and broccoli, to onion, lentil, sunflower and more.

Regular garden seed or lentils from your pantry won’t do. Because sprouts grow best in warm, wet conditions — conditions also favored by bacteria — you will want to buy organic, chemical- and pathogen-free seeds specially produced for sprouting, and focus on cleanliness and daily rinsing in cool water as your crop grows.

To get started, you’ll need a sanitized wide-mouth jar with a purchased fine mesh lid (or a layer of cheesecloth and a rubber band). Rinse the seed, add a tablespoon or two to

your jar and cover them with a few inches of water. Let the seeds sit for eight to 12 hours at room temperature. Drain out the water, add fresh cool water, swish the seeds about, then drain again and place the jar upside down at an angle to promote drainage and air circulation through the mesh lid. Keep the jar out of the sun. Rinse gently two to four times a day so the sprouts never dry out completely.

Depending on the variety you’re growing, it may take from three to seven days until your sprouts at their best for eating — still relatively small and just starting to green up. Give them one last rinse and drain thoroughly in a colander, picking out any unsprouted seeds. When they’re dry, store them in the fridge in a covered bowl lined with paper towel and eat them within a week.

Routine, communication good for families

arenting is a challenge during the best of times. It takes a village to raise a child, and when the village is far less available, parental support systems become harder to access. Those who must go into work and previously relied on child care services may find those services altered or shut down. Local parents now work-

ing from home haven’t been able to rely on schools to keep their kids busy and learning since mid-March. Finding a babysitter or sending the kids to their grandparents’ comes with its own challenges and risks.

First, it’s crucial that parents take care of their own physical and mental well-being, including maintaining a healthy diet, exercising and getting enough sleep. Dr. Kelly Ross of the Department of Newborn Medicine at Washington

University School of Medicine in St. Louis told healthychildren.org (part of the American Academy of Pediatrics) that mothers who neglect themselves negatively affect their ability to care for their children.

“A mom who is well rested, eats a healthy diet, gets plenty of exercise, maintains close relationships with friends and gets help when she realizes she isn’t coping well, is far more equipped to be the best mother she can be than one who

doesn’t do those things,” she writes.

Dr. Rebecca Moles of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center recommends parents take “time-outs” when they feel like they’re reaching their limits. If the kids are safe, take a few minutes to recharge, whether it’s by taking a shower or a walk outside, lying in a dark room, calling a friend — little things. Parents who have spouses or coparents on the premises can take turns watching the kids and taking “recharge” breaks.

Ross also explains that parents who take good care of themselves set a good example for their kids. It’s easier to get children to exercise or drink enough water when that’s what they’re seeing their parents do.

The Child Mind Institute says it’s important for kids to stick to a regular schedule as much as possible during times of stress. Breakfast time is breakfast time and bedtime is bedtime, but that’s just the beginning. Moles says activities involving movement tend to engage kids most, so things like gardening, playing catch or making paper airplanes are great ideas. Structured activities go further than unstructured.

As for other ideas, the internet offers a wealth of suggestions. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science has assembled a webpage full of fun and educational videos and activities for all ages. Another option: Have kids help out in the kitchen.

And while Moles cautions against letting kids go from one screen to another, the internet can be a great resource for low-budget crafts or exercise options. YouTube fitness coach Joe Wicks, aka The Body Coach, has P.E. classes for kids with energy to burn. Child Mind Institute psychologist David Anderson suggests parents take tips from the past and think about what they did for fun as kids.

Of course, it’s not all arts and crafts, activities and workouts. Kids may not be old enough to understand the news, but they worry all the same. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that it’s important to talk to children about their fears. That may mean doing some homework

together and looking up recommendations from local health care agencies or larger agencies like the World Health Organization. Dr. Jeffrey Lichtman of the Touro College Graduate School of Education calls this situation a teachable moment. He explains that the recommended precautions for preventing the spread of coronavirus are just good everyday hygiene. Parents should calmly teach children to wash their hands with soap and water and to cover their faces when they sneeze or cough.

Kids of all ages rely on their parents for a sense of security, so it’s important to avoid passing on anxieties unintentionally. It’s also important to limit one’s own news consumption and remember that there’s more going on in the world than COVID-19. Dr. Mark Reinecke of the Child Mind Institute warns specifically against dwelling on worst-case scenarios.

“Keep a sense of perspective, engage in solution-focused thinking and balance this with mindful acceptance,” he said.
