Calhan's El Paso County raceway is a great place to get some fresh air with the family.

T

here’s little doubt, 2020’s summer season wasn’t much fun for most families. As movie theaters shuttered their doors, waterparks, amusement parks and even playgrounds remained off limits, most sporting events announced cancellations too. It was difficult to even find an open restaurant.

Many families were forced to cut their bore-

dom through TV shows and quiet, small gatherings at home.

Some, however, were out having a blast — motorsports fans.

All they had to do was take a short drive out east to Calhan, a small town on Colorado’s eastern plains, home of the El Paso County Fair, and a roughly 40-minute drive from downtown Colorado Springs.

were forced to adapt early in the season. They streamed their first few events on their website — with no fans in the stands. But after working with local and state health departments, Joe Bellm, the track’s racing manager, found a way for fans to attend and for the drivers to compete.

“Having an outdoor venue definitely worked in our favor,” Bellm said. “We sectioned the grandstands out to allow for reduced capacity, social distancing and so family units could sit together.

It worked out pretty well. We had a great season, for the drivers and the fans.”

Those fortunate enough to attend witnessed a spectacle every other weekend. And Bellm, a long-time Colorado driver and racing promoter, has proven to be adept at drawing cars and drivers to the quarter-mile dirt race track.

“Dirt track racing is one of the few forms of auto racing that’s actually growing in popularity around the country,” he said. “It mostly takes place at smaller tracks, where fans get can really get close to the action and gain a feel for the competition.”

At the races, fans can expect an attack on their senses. The unmistakable roar of race car engines can be heard long before fans even see the track, so ear protection is advisable, especially for young children. Besides the auditory overload, the track environment seems awfully familiar to a monster truck show, or a demolition derby. But, it also may remind some of a fair or amusement park atmosphere, with such staples as popcorn, funnel cakes, corn dogs and beer.

and region compete in a wide variety of divisions, from stock cars to open-wheel sprints and midgets, which drift around the track’s banked turns before leveling off on the straightaways. Drivers in most divisions compete in a season-long series and earn points in individual races as they vie for series championships. Drivers come from all over the state and region to compete at El Paso. Some are part timers with day jobs, while others try to make a living on racing circuits both in the region and around the country.

The competition is fierce at every race.

Events typically start with qualifying heats in most divisions followed by main events later in the evening. Races usually start at 5 or 6 p.m. and end near 10 p.m., although race events during the El Paso County Fair have ended later.

That said, El Paso County Parks, which owns the fairgrounds and the race track, also intends for the racing experience to be family friendly.

“We want to have a variety of cars at our events and Joe (Bellm) has done a great job of drawing some of the best classes and racing series’ in the region,” said Todd Marts, manager of recreation and cultural services for El Paso County Parks. “Race fans are typically a wide group of people and ages with families. That’s one reason we installed a playground and offer food vendors.”

Bellm says there’s no typical race fan, either. Some just want to see the races at their local track, while others will follow a car series as it travels to other tracks in the state, namely I-76 Speedway in Fort Morgan, Colorado or Phillips County Raceway in Holyoke, Colorado.

Bellm assumed the role of racing manager at the track through a contract with the county in 2014. Prior to gaining the management contract he called El Paso County Raceway “a diamond in the rough.”

“The track had excellent facilities — a large grandstand (capacity of 4,000), superior track lighting, multiple food vendor sites and a beer garden,” he said.

The only problem he thought at the time (2013) was that the actual racing surface was in sore need of an upgrade.

“Prior to the changes, the track was mostly flat and way too narrow for my liking,” said Bellm, who is now entering his seventh season as racing manager. “So, we widened the straightaways and banked the corners and I think that really improved the racing surface. Really, it’s an ongoing process, but it seems to improve every season.”

He said attendance for racing events at El Paso County Raceway continues to trend upward, despite the pandemic.

“We had some funds to go toward facilities and a good portion of those funds went to improving the track,” said Marts, “Though we’ve had our ebbs and flows (in attendance) over the past several years since Joe assumed the racing management contract, we’ve been successful. We just renewed his racing management contract, so that’s a telling sign.”

This racing season begins April 24. Races start with qualifying heats at 5 p.m. From there, the track typically hosts races every other weekend through mid October and most

events will take place on Saturdays. Military Arts Connection offers free arts classes

ife moves fast; finding time to step away from the “how” of living and reconnecting with the things that provide the “why” takes deliberate effort. A healthy human needs a certain amount of art in their diet, whether for self-expression, for reflection or simply for pleasure. Fortunately, Colorado Springs has galleries, concert halls, clubs, theaters, statue gardens, libraries and more in ample supply — availability pending pandemic restrictions, naturally. And thanks to a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and the Department of Defense, local service members, veterans and their families can be referred for art experiences at zero out-of-pocket cost.

The Military Arts Connection, administered by the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region, offers arts experiences and classes for service members, veterans and family members, all taught by local artists.

It’s a part of the NEA/DoD/Department of Veterans Affairs-run Creative Forces initiative, which has pioneered programs for arts and healing in the military sector for the last decade. new, connect with their family and community in a new and unique way, and learn alternative ways of expression — poetry, photography, whatever it is — that was not therapy,” said Erin Fowler, UCCS Veterans Health and Trauma Clinic clinical therapist.

While learning art may have therapeutic value, MAC isn’t art therapy the same way an exercise class isn’t physical therapy. It’s not about treating a specific need or difficulty. It’s about art as enrichment, as recreation and as a means of self-expression. Fowler says it’s also about the human-to-human connection, which gives MAC participants another familiar face in the community through an experience totally outside of military life.

“The variety of creative experiences that are available to the community is really rich and diverse and growing all the time,” said Andy Vick, COPPeR executive director.

“We’ve taken a little bit of a beating from COVID, in that some of the experiences really don’t lend themselves to a virtual environment...

Notwithstanding that bump in the road that COVID has [caused] us, it’s really been a wonderful way to engage and connect the arts and military communities.”

While the MAC program is only two years old, its roots go further back. As noted above, it is a part of the Creative Forces initiative, which was started in 2011.

“The NEA has been piloting this notion of creative arts therapies as a way to help active duty and veteran populations...” Vick says. “About 2015, they came out and held a meeting... at the Fine Arts Center, where they pulled together a variety of [local and regional] art entities — the State Arts Council was there — and the NEA basically said [they had] identified 11 communities around the country that have active military presence and a strong arts community [and were] interested in standing a program up here in Colorado Springs in conjunction with Fort Carson.”

As part of that, there is a clinical component to the NEA’s goals in each of the 11 communities — Fort Carson’s Warrior Recovery Center has a music therapist, for example. However, the NEA also wanted programs to connect arts and military communities in these 11 locations. In February 2018, COPPeR convened around 200 interested parties for a meeting of the minds, which defined local priorities and produced the earliest structure for MAC. “Other sites around the country have their own community connections program that look nothing like Military Arts Connection,” Vick said.

“There [is] so much richness here in Colorado Springs, and diversity of... services that, for some of us, the military, we realized we were missing out on but didn’t have a clear pathway to connect,” said Damian McCabe, a retired army lieutenant colonel and the former chief of the Child and Family Behavioral Health System for the region.

“And I think, conversely, there were lots of folks in this in the community wishing they had a more direct pathway to provide services to military families and veterans.

[They] just weren’t sure how to negotiate this monolith sometimes that the military appears to be in terms of bureaucracy and red tape and processes and security and access and all that kind of stuff.”

In addition to making it easier for artist facilitators to connect to the military community, MAC gives them training for cultural competency.

McCabe says that folks outside of the military often have a limited idea of what military life is like. It’s not a monolith — the backgrounds and experiences of active duty service members, combat and non-combat veterans, and their families all vary widely.

When the MAC trains artist facilitators, the goal is to give them the tools to make clients feel connected and integrated with the community.

“I can’t think of a better community than our local artist community, which is also hugely diverse, to plug in and provide opportunities,” McCabe said.

What MAC offers, Vick clarifies, is not a lifelong pass to free arts classes in a chosen discipline. The experiences tend to be short-term, enough to let participants try something new without some of the logistical and financial obstacles.

“We want to spread the resources we have available around to as many people as possible,” Vick said. “You sign up for a block of four guitar lessons, great. And if you love it, and if your referring entity thinks you could benefit from another four, that’s fine.”

For someone like that, for whom a few MAC-backed guitar lessons have sparked a big interest, Vick says they’ll have the interest, the basic knowledge and the connections to keep going — in that example, to buy a guitar, book lessons outside of MAC and so on. If MAC leads a participant to a lifelong hobby, that’s a wonderful outcome — but the main goal of the program is to give service members, veterans and their families the chance to have an enriching art experience.

emaining confined to the dorms as the pandemic lingers on stinks, but the 50th Force Support Squadron at Schriever Air Force Base has an alternative.

Those who lust for outdoor activities or want to mingle with friends and family, albeit in

bite-sized groups, can use Rec On. Rec On is part of the Air Force’s recharge for resiliency program, which provides safe recreational resources that build cohesion and camaraderie among Airmen and their families.

“We’re happy to make this available to those on our base,” said Tom Appleman, 50th FSS assistant outdoor director.

“This initiative assists local airmen, those who are gearing

up for deployment as well as those returning to their duty station to acclimate to life at home.”

Though the pandemic forced everyone to alter their everyday lives, Appleman said it remains vital that Airmen and Space Force Guardians have an avenue to expend energy.

Appleman said Rec On benefits Airmen who desire that brief escape and gives them an entertaining option.

“Morale can become an issue, especially during holidays,” Appleman said. “Providing these opportunities gives them the chances to at least get out and see some other folks, participate in activities, build morale, get some adrenaline going and not feel like they’re stuck on post.”

Seth Cannello, 50th FSS fitness center director, expressed his gratitude regarding the program.

“I think it is very important to remain active during the pandemic,” Cannello said. “If you’re stuck indoors and can’t do things you normally do, you’ll get bored. There are lots of activities people can do to stay fit and, in this case, remain busy.”

Rec On conducts myriad events throughout the state including at Monarch Mountain, the Arkansas River and campsites.

In winter, trips focus snowboarding, skiing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

“These are perfect events while we’re quarantining and having to remain six feet away from one another,” Appleman said. “Events may slow down a little bit in April and May because I’m a guide instructor, but we plan to host these every week.”

Rec On also holds whitewater rafting trips and hosts a plethora of hikes. Braden Prather, 50th FSS Outdoor Recreation clerk, used the program to adapt to life in Colorado.

different areas in Colorado and “created unforgettable experiences” through Rec On. Last October, the program held a ‘full moon hike’ where participants made a 2-mile trek in costumes.

“I haven’t been on a trip that wasn’t fun and I haven’t heard anyone else say they haven’t had fun during one of these trips,” Prather said, adding the events give Airmen and Guardians a chance to meet new people and build bonds outside the uniform.

“I’ve made friends specifically from going on these trips,” she said. “These are friends who I now talk to outside of the trips and I met them by going on the trips. I wouldn’t have met them any other way. It’s definitely like a little community. And it’s nice to have these at the Rec On prices.”

Ah yes, the pricing — most anyone who hears about whitewater rafting or snowmobile trips would clutch their money, reluctant to pony up their cash.

While Rec On activities aren’t free, they won’t leave participants in the red.

Rec On receives subsidized funding to reduce costs for active duty and reserve Airmen and their families.

The Air Force also has programs such as Information Tickets and Tours, which allows anyone with base or post access to participate in military-related events.

ITT, however, can’t offer similar discounts to those who use the program since it doesn’t receive subsidies.

“On one of our recent snowmobiling trips, it would have costs $185 through ITT,” Appleman said. “Through Rec On, it only cost $35. It’s a significant difference that we’re able to offer. We get to do awesome programs for prices [participants] probably wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere.

That’s a morale boost right there.”

Of course, adhering to COVID-19 mitigation measures remains a priority.

Appleman said they impose strict rules to ensure the safety of participants, who must remain 6 feet apart when possible. And Appleman requires everyone to wear masks in accordance with state guidelines with minimal exceptions.

“During snowmobiling, once we’re out on tour and on the snowmobiles, masks are not required since you’ll be more than 6 feet away from each individual snowmobile and person,” he said. “During transportation to and from the program, masks will be required for the entirety of the ride.”

In December, Appleman said they filled vans to just 30 percent capacity, which amounted to four riders including the driver.

They did allow more than four on the trips, but additional participants had to provide their own transportation.

“We did have programs up to 10 people maximum including the staff member but had to be careful with that

because of the state guidelines,” Appleman said.

While times remain cumbersome during the pandemic, Appleman hopes Rec On eases that burden with its weekly activities.

“It’s hard to remember to check up on everyone,” Prather said. “It’s great to be able to have fun, destress — there’s a lot of stress these days — get out to see people in a nonwork related environment.”

The ASC instructors are experienced working with military with disabilities ranging from spinal cord injuries and traumatic brain injuries to visual impairments and neurological conditions. Over a hundred military and their families participate in Operations Rise and Conquer annually. Through high-quality year-round adventure activities participants learn new skills, push their limits and build confidence. “We feel it is important to create experiences that bring the entire family together, with the support they need,” said Program Director Chris Read.

Pikes Peak Library District makerspaces reopen

ikes Peak Library District reopened its makerspaces and video/audio recording studios on Tuesday, Feb. 9, along with a limited number of meeting spaces at five locations.

Library patrons also can check out studio equipment and use 3D print drop-off services.

“We have heard from many who are eager to come back and use these spaces and equipment,” said Teona Shainidze Krebs, chief public services officer and deputy chief librarian for PPLD. “We’re thrilled to have finally reached the point where we can safely resume more services while still prioritizing everyone’s health and safety during the ongoing pandemic.”

The makerspaces at East Library, Library 21c and Sand Creek Library will give access to laser engravers, sewing machines and die cutters.

The studios at Library 21c and Sand Creek Library will be available for on-site sound recordings and other video and photography needs with equipment like musical instruments, cameras, tripods and lighting.

East, Penrose, Rockrimmon and Sand Creek libraries, along with Library 21c, will have one meeting room available for one

public reservation per day. Reservations can be made up to six weeks in advance for a maximum of two hours at a time.

“Our team has put in a lot of work behind

the scenes to safely reopen these spaces,” Shainidze Krebs said. “They took the necessary time to ensure all needed precautions and processes were in place, and now we’re ready to open more doors and connect more people with what they need to pursue their goals.”

Safety protocols and restrictions for use are in place to protect library patrons and staff. For example, all equipment must be reserved in advance, room capacities will be strictly enforced, and buffer times will be instituted to allow for thorough sanitation between each reservation.

PPLD’s other requirements that adhere to local public health orders, including face coverings and building capacity limits, will continue to be in place.

Service hours vary by location, and reservations will be required for use of these spaces and equipment. Patrons can continue to use the Library remotely, take advantage of curbside services, or visit the Library to browse the collection, use a computer and WiFi, charge devices, and fax, copy or scan documents. The first hour of each day is reserved for people at higher risk of serious complications from COVID-19.

CPW relocates orphaned bear cubs; Groomed trail etiquette

n Wednesday, Jan. 27, Colorado Parks and Wildlife returned five orphaned black bear cubs to the wild, by “denning” them on Pikes Peak. Of the five cubs, two were orphaned after a homeowner in Colorado Springs shot and killed their mother, in an incident that remains under investigation.

Two were orphaned when their mom had to be put down

by CPW after it attacked a person in Manitou Springs, and one was reported as being abandoned, according to CPW District Wildlife Manager for Teller County, Tim Kroening.

Kroening said the cub that was reported as being abandoned was monitored by CPW and was captured after it was determined that its mother was not returning to take care of it.

The cubs, which weighed around 100 pounds each, were sent to Wet Mountain Wildlife Rehabilitation to prepare for life on their own in the wild. Once they were deemed to be mature enough to live on their own, they were returned to CPW. On Wednesday, the cubs were tranquilized and transported to their new homes in artificial dens CPW built on both the north and south slopes of Pikes Peak. Once there, the cubs, still tranquilized, were placed in their dens where it was expected that they would roam around their new homes for a short time after waking up, before returning to the dens and going to sleep (called torpor) until spring.

Doing so helps keep bears from coming into residential areas looking for food, and reduces human-bear encounters.

In other news, with the announcement last month that Mueller State Park will be grooming some of its trails for cross-country skiing, it’s a good time to mention winter trail etiquette. Cross country skiing requires relatively flat, even and packed surfaces. If you’re snowshoeing or hiking on a trail that has been groomed for cross-country skiing,

or you see cross-country ski tracks on the trail, do the right thing and stay off the groomed surface and off of the cross-country ski tracks. Going to one side of the groomed surface or of the ski tracks will allow cross-country skiers to have a good outdoor experience.
