Military faces unique higher ed challenges

2018 study by global policy think tank the RAND Corporation surveyed 81 United States Army Soldiers to ask why they enlisted. The resulting data CSMNG CSMNG showed that benefits like health care, tuition assistance and GI Bill benefits motivated around 32 percent of the soldiers they surveyed to join up. That’s hardly surprising; the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed a direct, positive correlation between education and earnings based on 2017 figures. But taking advantage of those resources and getting the most out of higher education means acknowledging and planning around the unique challenges military-affiliated students face.

Given the large military community in the area, most post-secondary education institutions in Colorado Springs tend to have experience with the needs of military-affiliated students, which includes veterans, active duty service members and the children of either.

“Twenty percent of our students are [veterans or] military-based, so we have a very robust veteran and military program,” said Lisa Buckman, director of the McCord-Herbst Veteran Center at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs.

Predominantly, Buckman’s office processes benefits — and any service member or veteran understands the demands of such a task — in order to ensure students are able to get their needs met as well as possible. Mixing bluegrass tradition with dusty desert cool, their newest release, “We Were Rich,” touches hearts and garnered comments like, “I can’t remember the last time I choked up over a song,” and “A song that touches your soul.”

Next on stage is singer/songwriter Jimmie Allen, who became the first black solo performer to win New Male Artist of the Year at the ACM Awards.

He launched his career with two consecutive No. 1 hits “Best Shot” and “Make Me Want To.” His current single “Freedom Was A Highway” with superstar Brad Paisley is climbing the charts. He performs at 7:30 p.m.

Finally, LOCASH, the headliner of the event, takes the stage at 9 p.m.

This American country music duo consisting of vocalists Chris Lucas and Preston Brust combines soul, rock, funk, pop, hip-hop and gospel in a high-energy version of contemporary country, delivering passionate, fun stage performances.

“We’ve had to facilitate meetings between professors and veterans who were grouped with younger people and... went to their professor and said I can’t work with 18-year-olds,” said Buckman.

With every obstacle comes an opportunity, though, so Buckman and her staff often remind veterans of how much mentoring they can provide and how they’ve been prepared

to mentor their juniors during their service, as well as just how much they themselves have grown since age 18.

Of course, with age and life experience of military service comes challenges shared with other non-traditional students, such as families and jobs. Buckman says that UCCS, for example, has a child care center on campus, and while the UCCS VC can’t offer financial support, she and her team have connections throughout the community

that they can connect military-affiliated students to if they can’t afford on-campus childcare.

For veterans specifically, Veterans Affairs work study opportunities not only offer financial aid benefits, they help veterans connect. The VC at UCCS hires up to a dozen VA work study employees during the school year, Buckman says, and they’re essential to processing benefits. Most universities have similar opportunities. Buckman also works closely with the Mount Carmel Veteran Service center and the Fort Carson Education Office, both of which have VA work study opportunities. Any applications she can’t hire due to limited positions, she will pass on to Mount Carmel or Fort Carson, who are always looking for contractors.

“We have 15 applications for the fall, we are not going to be able to hire all of them,” she said. The UCCS VC, once more as an example, also makes use of referrals to other organizations and offices on campus for needs that they can’t meet. It’s far from uncommon for any college students to have a mental health crisis at some point in their studies, so Buckman and her team can offer to the UCCS wellness center. That’s especially helpful for students waiting on VA care or referrals, given that agency’s 2014 and 2019 controversies over long wait times for care and alleged “secret wait lists” used to hide the extent of the issue.

“I don’t blame the VA, they are overwhelmed, which is why they send people out to the community now,” said Buckman, “but [when student veterans] come in and can’t even get a referral, we [direct them to] the UCCS wellness center. They are trained for this... and they’ll see you seven times in an academic year, and veteran and military affairs office will pay for it.”

Students Buckman and the VC work with are more than just their military affiliations, and the resources they need may have more to do with their gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or other factors, and some military-affiliated students want nothing to do with the military due to bad experiences.

“Whatever your issue is, we care that we help you,” said Buckman. “We don’t want anybody to feel lost.”

Moms a growing segment fitness industry

P

arenting youngsters can be a pretty tough challenge for most people.

Traveling even short distances can become overwhelming as parents must prepare themselves and their children for the trip, load the family into the car with all the necessary supplies, bags and carriers, then unload at their destination before even getting started on an activity. Those who wish to keep their fitness level up have an even more daunting task: How does one get a good workout in while also tending to the needs of their little ones?

That’s the challenge more than a few military spouses faced as recently as a couple of years ago. Thankfully since then, some innovative entrepreneurs have stepped in to offer a variety of fitness alternatives for moms looking to stay fit.

Marlie Bryant Yon, a certified fitness trainer and military spouse, opened Fitness Freedom Co. in Fountain back in June of 2018.

“There is an incredible need for this type of fitness program,” she said. “A lot of military spouses are alone most of the time as their husbands are either deployed or training for long hours. So, spouses need that support, especially when their husbands are gone.”

She originally joined the club while living in Tennessee, but after moving here in 2018, she found an opportunity to introduce the club and its fitness focus to the Pikes Peak region.

“We run with strollers quite a bit,” she said. “There are a lot of things you can do with a stroller, but it’s only a part of what we do. Really, our workouts are what we like to call bootcamp-style. Participants are moving the entire time. There’s nothing easy about them.”

Typically, stroller-mom and functionalfitness type clubs strive to provide a challenging experience. They’re almost always guided by certified fitness trainers who incorporate a wide variety of movements and intensity. Some, like Stroller Strong Moms even offers prenatal and post-partum focused fitness regimens as part of their repertoire.

Tess Partridge, a former collegiate athlete, loved working out, being competitive and staying in shape. And, she made a point to continue making those habits a part of her daily regimen even after graduating from college.

“After becoming a mom, however, I found it was really difficult and expensive to leave my newborn in a gym nursery or finding a group fitness class that was both child

Partridge’s program is called Mom’s Fitness Bootcamp, under the iStroll banner.

It incorporates instructor-led activities that combine cardio, core and strength training exercises designed specifically for moms with young children.

Many of the moms in the group bring their children in strollers and their toddler-age kids on foot. Partridge directs the ever-changing exercises much like a pilates instructor at a local gym. She dictates movements, specified repetitions and encourages participants as they work through carefully planned drills. Throughout the training session, she occasionally stops for planned breaks. Then the moms tend to their strollerbound children, take a few deep breaths and gear up for their next challenge It’s an interesting dynamic, something that could never happen inside a gym or a daycare center. And, its exactly the way the moms want it.

“There’s not a lot of groups or places out there where you can work out and bring your kids,” said Meagan Bennett, a military spouse. “And as for the work out, it’s been kicking my butt.”

Partridge likes to inject variety into the workouts as moms typically gather five days a week at various locations and venues in Colorado Springs.

“I love the community it creates. It’s moms supporting moms. We’ve made good friends and taken our friendships outside of this format to where we do many other things together.”

These types of moms fitness clubs seem to be catching on as Sylvain said Stroller Strong Moms now has more than 35 outlets at locations around the country and the world (locations have opened in Italy and Germany). In Colorado Springs, Sylvain operates two, while a third recently opened in the Monument/Tri-Lake area north of the city.

Bryant Yon started Fitness Freedom Co. with three moms, but the club grew quickly and now boasts over 20 participants with multiple classes and times. Plus, she offers an online programming for those who prefer to workout at home.

“The COVID-19 pandemic was actually good for our business,” Bryant Yon said.

“Gyms weren’t an option for a long time and I think people started making health a priority during the pandemic.”

The Story of Us: The Pikes Peak Region from A – Z is an exhibition featuring something significant about the region matching each letter of the alphabet, from The Antlers hotel to the Zoological Park that burnt down in 1916. And the sesquicentennial COS@150 exhibit showcases 150 objects telling 150 stories across 150 years, and innovatively includes the use of QR codes for an augmented experience.

“We use objects to attract people, to intrigue them and invite them to be curious … and create opportunity for a conversation,” said Leah Davis Witherow, museum's curator of history.

Bonus: Throughout the summer, food trucks park around the museum on Tuesdays during lunch for Food Truck Tuesdays — and on Wednesday afternoons, the Colorado Farm and Art Market sets up in Alamo Square Park.

olorado Springs has spent summer 2021 celebrating its 150th birthday — the difficult-to-pronounce sesquicentennial. In 1871, a spike was driven to break ground on a community that now, a century and a half later, is home to major military installations including the United States Air Force Academy, as well as the U.S. Olympic Committee, the acclaimed Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, and so much more. In the last couple decades, the Springs’ population has increased by nearly 40 percent. Along with this rapid growth have come new attractions and an exploding creative culinary scene, with a variety of craft and artisan dining establishments. Without a doubt, the biggest draw to the sprawl beneath America’s Mountain is its wild-but-mild weather and the great outdoors.

In addition to all the above, the Springs has a long list of educational venues to explore, including its various museums. From racing to rodeos and insects to athletes, here is a guide to the exhibits that make up El Paso County.

Pikes Peak Hill Climb Experience & Hall of Fame Shake and bake into the clouds Author Katherine Lee Bates stood atop Pikes Peak in 1893. Looking out over the “enameled plain,” poetic lyrics filled her mind. That evening, she wrote the words down at The Antlers hotel. Her poem eventually became “America The Beautiful.” In 1916, mining millionaire and philanthropist Spencer Penrose financed a highway up the peak and initiated an auto race to the top: the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Penrose promoted the new auto-race, also known as “The Race to the Clouds,” that’s been held annually since, except during the two World Wars. Rea Lentz won the very first race in 1916, before the competition went on hiatus for the next three years due to WWI. The Pikes Peak Hill Climb Experience & Hall of Fame is part of the Penrose Heritage Museum — located in The Broadmoor neighborhood — which houses a substantial number of collectables from the philanthropist. The Hill Climb Experience honors and showcases the moto-achievements of ascending and summiting America’s Mountain with great horsepower and speed.

Peterson Air & Space Museum Foundation Aim High … Fly-Fight-Win Located on the grounds of the recently rechristened Peterson Space Force Base (formerly Air Force Base), the Edward J. Peterson Air & Space Museum informs and educates the public by showcasing jets and missiles while honoring the aviation history and heritage of the U.S. military base.

The museum is located in the center of an 8.3-acre state historic district on Peterson SFB — and the buildings that make up the museum were once part of Colorado Springs’ original Municipal Airport. The main entrance is through the airport's original terminal, built in 1941. The outdoor Air Park is where the majority of the museum’s aircraft are on display. The Edward J. A timeless struggle on Mother Nature’s turf

M

y path to fly fishing began with a very boyish act. Our family owned a dairy out on Colorado’s high plains. We all worked hard, but for the 8-year-old me, time ran slow on long summer days.

And on this particularly long June day, I swiped a tub of cheese from my mom’s refrigerator and fed it in tiny pieces to the trout in our irrigation pond. Great entertainment, watching the fish dart from the depths to consume my offerings. A fishing kid’s dream, this pond was filled with cold spring water and it grew heavy rainbow trout with blue-green backs and crimson sides.

Forced to confess my sins to my mother, I sensed that she appreciated my desperate measures. Those were slow days for her, too. But she needed to make a stand. The cheese was gone and so were my fishing privileges. My fishing pole and tackle box, confiscated for one week.

Time to get creative, because not fishing meant not living.

At least that’s how it felt.

Prior to our arrival on the dairy, a fisherman had left a trout fly stuck to a board in our garage. It was old but wore its age well, with a bright green chenille body and wings made of deer hair. The hook seemed a bit rusty but strong. And, like a gift from the fish gods, two feet of clear

monofilament line were attached to the fly.

The country life had provided me with a sense of resourcefulness, and I used this gift to create my first “fly line” by tying together two lengths of bailing twine, followed by the monofilament leader and the fly.

I was back in business, so long as mom didn’t catch me sneaking off after the chores were done.

She didn’t, and I soon managed to sling the fly across the pond. The cast was no thing of beauty, but it was good enough.

The fly plunked onto the water surface and lazily began to sink. The chenille glowed and flashed in the summer sun, and I slowly retrieved my line.

There may be no greater thrill in fishing than to see a trout rise to your fly. And on that June morning in 1968, a gorgeous fish charged from its hiding place and smashed the old bug from the garage.

The fight raged in the clear water. I could feel the fish lunge with powerful tail swings.

Its silvery iridescent scales flashed in the sun. The fish jumped to shake the hook. It was game on. And then it wasn’t. The chunky rainbow had broken free, and I could see it dart back to deep water.

Disappointment grabbed me for a minute. But those feelings were soon replaced by something better. I had made a discovery.

Sure, I could have used bait … Velveeta, if I wanted more trouble from mom. I could have caught plenty of fish. But the fly was of the trout’s world, representing a natural meal, a smaller fish, or perhaps a drowning beetle. The game had changed.

I’d met the fish on the fish’s terms. And it felt grounded and natural.

There is plenty to talk about and explore in the world of fishing equipment… rods, reels, waders, etc. And today’s technology has made fly fishing easier, more expensive, and certainly fun and interesting.

But the cool thing about fly fishing is this: Catching fish via this ages-old method requires fishermen to get cozy with Mother Nature. It’s a gateway to a new appreciation for the outdoors and for the various furred and finned critters that live in our fields and streams. It will challenge you to sit streamside and observe mayflies flapping along the willows, or to watch a fish sip tiny midges from the water surface.

stream. That’s what is cool about fly fishing. And Colorado is the place to do it.

The state’s snowpack creates thousands of miles of streams and rivers, and trout reside in most of them. Close to Colorado Springs, the Arkansas and South Platte rivers offer excellent fly fishing. And our mountain lakes, the North Slope Recreation Area on Pikes Peak, plus Elevenmile, Spinney and Antero reservoirs, provide opportunities for big fish.

Like other outdoor pursuits, fly fishing can be expensive, but it’s possible to purchase all of the essentials, and start catching fish with an investment of $200 to $300. The idea is to understand what the fish are eating and present to them a reasonable imitation that behaves like the real thing.

Pricey equipment isn’t necessarily needed.

Trout reproduce naturally in many streams and rivers, and some are stocked to maintain a steady fish population.

Releasing trout to fight again, or to make baby trout, is a good idea. Some water carries special “catch and release” restrictions. Other streams and lakes may have limits of one fish or four. Buy a fishing license before you go. A yearly license costs about $36. Short-term licenses are available for less. Know the rules and protect the resource.

In May, before the high-country snow began to melt, I explored new parts of the Arkansas River. In one spot a massive rock jutted into the current and created a quiet pool on the down-river side. I sat on the bank and watched the small, moth-like caddis flies (a favorite natural fish food) flop on the water’s surface. The trout were there, hungry, prowling.

I had learned that trout love to eat caddis as they rise through the water from the riverbed to the surface. The caddis are vulnerable. They are candy for hungry trout. I tied on an imitation “caddis emerger” pattern (this is geeklevel stuff) and cast it into a swirling current that settled into slower, deeper water.

Opinion: How to divorce-proof marriage

I

’m days away from celebrating my 30th wedding anniversary. I’m not just married; I’m blissfully married. Tit-for-tat ego struggles with my spouse last approximately 2 minutes, then we’re back to holding hands.

We have made humble sacrifices for one another and spend most evenings dreaming together about our next adventure. We feel lucky because, over the Dr. Rosenna years, we have consoled many friends BAKARI through their divorce.

According to Pew Research statistics, the value of marriage is declining as more Americans over the age of 55 divorce. Americans are also waiting longer to get married.

Among couples who get married today, only 60 percent of those unions involve two first-time partners. In 20 percent of the marriages, both people have been previously married. Unfortunately, practice does not make perfect.

As a psychologist, I have witnessed the torch that lights the match to divorce many times. The actions that people expect their partner to do in the name of love feel more burdensome than creating economic security, completing domestic chores, and successfully parenting. Ambiguous emotional needs often take precedence over the practicalities of marriage.

It seems unconscious voids drive conscious behavior.

Adults who were raised in emotionally or physically unsafe environments may impose roles upon partners that manifest as unhealthy expectations. Adverse adult life experiences can also lead to a sense of insecurity. The insecurity

can manifest in relationships as expecting to be rescued.

Conflict arises when expectations become the focus of the relationship rather than growth.

In healthy relationships, each person is responsible for their own joy. When two people bring joy into the relationship, the pleasure is magnified for both of them. But, when one or both people attempt to fill a void, there will eventually be too little joy going into the relationship.

Relationships should feel validating and partners should reflect the beauty they see in one another. The reflections come in kind words, acts of kindness, and consistency of healthy patterns. However, when validation turns into a “need” little compromise is possible. A bad mood is interpreted as a decreased investment in the relationship; delayed communication makes the partner suspicious of an affair. A partner wanting to spend time with friends feels like rejection. These responses are not related to love but a reaction to previously unmet “need.”

Loving relationships are based on growth and support, not static roles or constant demands. Long-lasting relationships are fluid and change. The path to long-lasting love is self-awareness and a willingness to work on self. Both partners have to be able to operate as their authentic selves.

My husband and I have different interests and different emotional needs. So, we support each other in getting our needs met outside of the relationship. My husband sometimes teases me about my 2-hour phone visits with girlfriends.

I am patient when he chooses football over spending time with me. But, I don’t wait for him. I satisfy myself with other interests.

We recommend that kids begin their first appointments when their first teeth come in. Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic diseases among children, yet it is preventable with good oral care.

My child had a vision screening at school, isn’t that enough?

While school screenings are great at diagnosing issues with near sight and far sight, a basic screening can still miss overall health concerns in the eye. A study from the American Optometric Association finds that basic screenings can miss up to 75% of the vision problems that children are having.

What are some basic habits that I can teach my child for good oral care?

• Follow the 2 X 2 rule: Brush for two minutes, twice a day and visit your dentist for a cleaning and checkup twice a year.

• Floss early, floss often: Once a child’s teeth start to fit closely together, it’s time to teach them the habit of daily flossing. You’ll have to take the lead at first, then they’ll get the hang of it by the time they reach 8 or 10 years old.

• Tap is terrific: Water is the way to go! Encourage your kids to drink water when they’re thirsty instead of juice or soft drinks. Water washes away decaycausing bacteria, plus most U.S. tap water is enhanced with fluoride which helps build strong tooth enamel.

What are some signs I should look for that could indicate my child needs glasses?

There are several things parents can watch for. Frequent headaches, rubbing their eyes or squinting and holding screens or books close to their face can indicate a problem.

Also, clumsiness or frequently bumping into furniture can be a sign of vision problems.
