s the global pandemic continues to disrupt travel and recreation opportunities throughout the country, families won’t need to look far to find activities in Colorado’s high country.

Military families can save a little cash too this August, as Colorado Parks and Wildlife offers active-duty and retired military personnel free admission to all 41 state parks (with documentation) during the month.

Campers, hikers, cyclists and water sports enthusiasts have a multitude of options when it comes to choosing day trips or weekend getaways, thanks to the state’s mild fall climate.

Though there are sights to see and recreational opportunities across the state, Mueller State Park is located just 30 miles west of Colorado Springs, between the towns of Divide and Cripple Creek, along Highway 67. It’s is one of the closest state parks to the Pikes Peak Region and features some of the best turning-aspen-grove views in the state.

“Colors peak around the end of September,” said Brian Kerrigan, park manager at Mueller. “And, visitors can catch a great view of the changing aspens from just about anywhere in the park.”

Mueller boasts over 55 miles of trails and includes 132 campsites in a mixed forest. Reservations for campsites are highly recommended and the park offers a variety of activities to suit family units.

“We recommend the Elk Meadows Trail,” Kerrigan said.

“It’s a fairly easy trail that features rolling hills and a lot of aspen groves and meadows with aspens backing up against them. Some of the best photo opportunities lie on the trail

Since many outdoor activities typically allow families to gather yet still maintain distance from others, all of the state parks have been open and operating, even as the COVID-19 pandemic rages. Visitors must follow rules specific to each park that include the wearing of face coverings and maintaining distance from others.

“State park visitor centers have recently reopened, though with limited access,” said Bill Vogrin, spokesman for the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Southeast Regional Office. “And though playgrounds are still closed, park campgrounds are open and the parks with beaches are limiting capacity.”

Lathrop State Park near Walsenburg sits roughly 90 miles from Colorado Springs and provides a great option for travelers seeking superior hiking prospects while being surrounded by astonishing vistas and peaks from three different mountain ranges. The park features two side-by-side lakes – one for motor boating

and another for paddle sports (canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding). Lathrop is open for all activities, weather permitting, through September.

“Lathrop State Park is one of those hidden gems,” Vogrin said. “It includes an archery range and a walking trail that takes visitors around the perimeter of the lakes, plus, there’s a golf course next door, so visitors can get a variety of activities in, in one place.”

History buffs and those seeking to view some fascinating geological formations can venture a bit farther south to Trinidad Lake State Park. The massive park covers nearly 20,000 acres, features the Purgatoire River and Reservoir and is a relative haven for anglers and bird watchers. It’s also one of the few places on the planet where the K-T Boundary is exposed.

“Scientists travel the world to find evidence of the K-T Boundary,” Vogrin said. “It’s a layer of ash that suffocated most life, including the dinosaurs, about 65 million years ago, following the impact of a massive asteroid on the Yucatan Peninsula.”

Scientists define the boundary as a geological signature (a thin layer of rock) and say there are no dinosaur bones above the K-T Boundary. Visitors who want to view the boundary can find it on a hillside along a road in the park, and the park visitor center has all the information visitors will need.

Just outside of the town of Trinidad, travelers can find Colorado’s Highway of Legends Scenic and Historic Byway. The scenic byway takes visitors on an 82-mile loop from Trinidad to Walsenberg. They’ll view volcanic formations near the Spanish Peaks and geological features known as the Dakota Wall and Devil’s Stair Steps that seem similar to the Garden of the Gods and Boulder’s Flat Irons.

The new $92 million museum stands out in the southwest area of downtown Colorado Springs.

he United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum opened to the public Thursday, July 30.

Located in sou.wntown Colorado Springs, the 60,000-square-foot museum is dedicated to the compelling stories of U.S. Olympic and Paralympic athletes and the artifacts, media and technology behind the athletes.

General admission tickets go on sale 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, with prices ranging from $14.95 to $24.95.

Memberships are currently on sale, and members will have early access to secure their tickets.

Manitou library, art center explore shared space

he Pikes Peak Library District and Manitou Art Center are exploring a potential co-location partnership that could benefit library cardholders, MAC members, local artists, community partners, taxpayers and the local economy.

“PPLD and the MAC have a strong history of collaboration, working closely together to positively impact lives and strengthen community,” PPLD Chief Librarian and CEO John Spears said. “We’re excited about possibly pairing our physical collection and other library services inside an existing space that already provides opportunity to create, learn, exhibit, perform, and connect with others in Manitou Springs.”

These discussions are taking place as the Manitou Springs determines what to do with the historic Carnegie Library building, owned by the city and currently leased by PPLD for the Manitou Springs Library.

On July 7, City Council voted to discontinue the lease agreement, permitting PPLD to explore other location options in Manitou Springs that offer ADA accessibility, in addition to the ability to provide meeting rooms, computer labs and creative studios to the community.

“While the Carnegie Library building is rich in history and meaning, it’s not currently adequate or suitable as a public library space,” Spears said. “PPLD’s departure would provide the city with the necessary time to plan for the building’s future and allow us to

relocate so we can best serve Manitou Springs residents — and in a way that’s on par with the rest of our library district.”

The district and the MAC are considering the possibility of housing the Manitou Springs Library inside of the MAC while still providing access and use for MAC supporters, local artists and community partners.

In this scenario, PPLD could provide staff support and a physical collection of books and other library materials, along with access to resources like meeting rooms and creative spaces, for library patrons. MAC members and artists would still maintain benefits while gaining more opportunities and exposure.

The partnership would bring together music, theatre,

visual art and the vast resources and services of the public library in one space.

“We have already experienced great success partnering with PPLD on a number of initiatives, and the MAC is excited about this opportunity, which could lead us to do even more for the community in the future,” MAC Executive Director Natalie Johnson said.

“This co-location venture also could provide other long-term benefits, like minimizing infrastructure costs for MAC and PPLD while leveraging and complementing each other’s strengths of service,” Johnson said. “This would truly be a win-win for MAC supporters and members, PPLD cardholders and residents of Manitou Springs.”

The road back to the diamond

T

he COVID-19 pandemic shook the sports world to its core in March after the virus made its way to the United States.

When society retreated to quarantine, sports, including NCAA men’s and women’s basketball, followed suit by canceling the remainder of both seasons as well as both NCAA tournaments.

Even the Colorado high school sports season — the remaining winter sports and all spring activities — shuttered due to the virus.

Intramural sports at Schriever Air Force Base faced the same fate as the installation moved to teleworking effective March 16 for majority of its force.

In the midst of its volleyball season, the 50th Support Squadron elected to nix the remaining games to ensure the Airmen’s safety.

While sports may seem insignificant to halt on base during a pandemic, those activities serve a meaningful role in camaraderie, and Airmen hit the four pillars. Those pillars include: mental, social, physical and spiritual, which are meant to provide balance to an Airman’s life.

“Activities like this are always important for the Airmen no matter what, and that’s why we’re here,” said Charles Thornton, 50th FSS recreation assistant.

“We want to be able to provide for [the Airmen].”

Airmen began funneling back to base mid-June following a low number of COVID cases. Then, leadership at 50th FSS began connecting the dots to compile the softball season.

Thornton said he and 50th FSS fitness staff spoke with different leagues around Colorado Springs to obtain information regarding player safety and sanitizing equipment.

“There are a lot of different things that play into

sports,” Thornton said. “When we don’t have to think about those things, we don’t tend to look at every scenario and try to get three or four different possible answers. But that’s the time we’re in right now. We want everybody to be safe.”

Thornton and 50th FSS worked with Rocky Mountain Sports Officials, which also provides officials to Schriever during intramural games, to produce a season.

The RMSO uses more than 10 softballs per game to curb the spread of germs, cleans used softballs while others are in play and sanitizes equipment, including bats, with disinfectant wipes.

“We tried to take a lot of what they’re doing downtown and implement that to see what Schriever can use,” Thornton said. “There are a lot of little things we’re doing, and we’re trying to figure out the best way to do it.”

Those minor details include on- and off-the-field activity. The 50th FSS realizes sports symbolize more than winning or losing; sports provide moments where Airmen can share stories from their events.

“We’re trying to give Airmen an outlet, and we want them to be able to get out of the office, get some group morale as a unit and continue with their day afterward,” Thornton said. “If they have a great game, they’re going to talk about it the rest of the day. They’re going to talk about how this person had a great hit or a great catch or the game-winning drive. Whatever the ‘it’ happens to be, they’ll talk about it.”

Briefly, due to lack of registrants, Airmen nearly lost that opportunity to have their moment. On the secondto-last day to sign up, Seth Cannello, 50th FSS fitness and sports manager, had just three letters of intent.

“We’ve never been in a situation where I feared we wouldn’t have enough teams to conduct a season,” Cannello said. “I was worried we wouldn’t register enough for a

complete season this year. If we had less than five teams, we would have forgone a [regular season] and just hosted

a round-robin tournament.”

The 50th FSS didn’t have to conduct a round robin tournament, though, as eight teams eventually signed up to play softball, which started its season July 7.

Teams received specific guidelines, including the aforementioned sanitary expectations, along with typical bylaws of the league to guide players.

Nearly four months after 50th FSS played its last intramural game, and following the hoopla of letters of intent, the 4th Operations Squadron faced U.S. Air Force Warfare

Center in the season opener.

“It was great having everyone come out, and it was well overdue for everyone to come out and get some camaraderie,” said Joel Boxberger, 4th Space Operations Squadron flight commander, after the game. “It felt great, especially after having a few months off. [The fitness staff has] done a great job of getting everything ready and making sure all the measures [were] in place.

They communicated rules well in advance and kept us up-to-date- throughout the game.”

Boxberger’s teammate, Robert Kyner, 4th SOPS engineer, appreciated the additional rules guidelines that ensured Airmen safety.

“Everything went really well,” Kyner said. “It’s nice to have these rules in place to make sure people follow them to keep everyone safe.”

While the final slate of games for July were postponed due to weather and the first Peterson-Schriever Garrison Commander’s call, teams continue to have an avenue to compete.

“Safety was obviously our No. 1 concern, and group morale was No. 2 because we wanted people to enjoy getting out of the office,” Thornton said. “Third, we wanted to get competition back. We’re happy to be able to do that.”

UCCS joins Space ISAC as founding member U

CCS is now a founding member of Space ISAC, which was welcomed into the National Council of ISACs on July 16.

The university joins Kratos Defense, Booz Allen Hamilton, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, MITRE, SES, Parsons Corporation and Purdue University to build collaboration across the global space industry. Gretchen Bliss, UCCS’ director of cybersecurity programs, will sit on the Space ISAC Board.

UCCS’ membership creates new access for the Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center to Colorado’s space and cybersecurity ecosystems, and to UCCS’ cybersecurity engineer students and graduates.

“UCCS is uniquely positioned to provide the cybersecurity workforce and research that industry and government are looking for with the headquarters of the Space ISAC, National Cybersecurity Center and Exponential Impact all located in our cybersecurity building,” Bliss said.

“Our students and faculty will be able to collaborate with the leading organizations, government, academia and industry in the space and cybersecurity fields on education, training and research. They’ll be able to provide timely, effective solutions to hard problems at the national level.”

Space ISAC, the nation’s only space-dedicated information sharing and analysis center, is based in Colorado Springs and was unveiled in April 2019 during a classified session at the 35th Space Symposium.

The Space ISAC and National Cybersecurity Center share space in UCCS’ cybersecurity building. The Business Journal reported April 27 that the Space ISAC is set to expand its footprint next year, with the construction of a Cyber Vulnerability Lab and a Watch Center, covering 7,000 square feet in its space at the NCC. That’s part of a larger buildout at the sprawling facility that houses the NCC, Space ISAC and Exponential Impact, funded by a $2.75 million U.S. Economic Development Administration grant and matching funds.

Weber Street to become downtown bicycle connection W

eber Street between Pikes Peak Avenue and Uintah Street is set to be converted from four travel-lanes to two travellanes, two bike lanes and a new center turn lane.

The new configuration will extend a key bicycle connection from downtown and create a neighborhood friendly street in the Near and Old North End neighborhoods.

The change was made in conjunction with repaving in July.

“Changes to Weber Street make good on the City’s promise to add much needed north/south bicycle infrastructure to connect downtown to neighborhoods to the north,” said Tim Roberts, transportation planner for the city of Colorado Springs. “Adding bike infrastructure will create more neighborhood feel to this low volume roadway and will provide connections to several bike routes and key destinations without compromising traffic flow.”

The new traffic configuration will provide: • Dedicated space separating people in cars and people on bikes; • Connections to bike lanes and sev-

eral key destinations; • A center turn to provide dedicated space that serves to improve traffic flow, and improves safety by reducing rearend collisions; and • A shorter distance for pedestrians to cross and improved sight visibility between approaching vehicles and pedestrians.

Weber Street was identified in 2018 for roadway improvements and repaving based on traffic analysis and neighborhood input received during the Old/ Near North End Transportation Study.

A series of public meetings held between August 2017 and February 2018 identified traffic improvements to maintain neighborhood integrity while accommodating for continued growth in this area bordering downtown.

This corridor was outlined in the Experience Downtown Master Plan and the COS Bikes! Vision Map from the Bike Master Plan. It’s one of several downtown roadway projects that evolved out of public discussions in 2017 and 2018 to provide more bike connections and close infrastructure gaps downtown, according to the city.

heyenne Mountain Zoo has been voted the fourthbest zoo in North America in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

This time, America’s mountain zoo was recognized in two categories: No. 4 Best Zoo in North America (up from No. 6 in 2019) and No. 2 Best Zoo Exhibit in North America, for its Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit (up from No. 5 in 2019).

This is the fourth consecutive year the Colorado Springs zoo has placed in the top 10 in the competition.

In a statement announcing the results, Bob Chastain, president and CEO of Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, said the best zoo ranking “means even more to us this year, with the difficult times the Zoo has been going through in 2020.

“Even though the Zoo was closed due to virus restrictions for nearly three months, and we currently have limited capacity and other precautions in place, our fans and members still rally around us,” Chastain said.

Voting for the online contest was originally set to begin

March 16, in the midst of COVID-19-related closures and nationwide stay-at-home orders.

Voting was temporarily paused on March 24, and reopened June 14 with voting through July 6.

Despite the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo closing to the public March 17, it received its highest ranking since 2018, when it also placed fourth in the Best Zoo in North America category.

Its Rocky Mountain Wild exhibit opened in the summer of 2008 and is home to a pack of endangered Mexican wolves, four Canada lynx, two North American porcupines, two bald eagles, two grizzly bears, three mountain lions, three river otters, a family of turkeys and a flock of wood ducks.

Its newest resident is a young, orphaned Alaskan moose, which moved into the exhibit July 15.

A panel of travel experts, recruited by USA TODAY editors, nominated 20 North American Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoos and exhibits, and supporters had a total of four weeks to cast their votes, once per day, for the nominees of their choice.

Hard conversations for hard times

C

hildren pick up more than they get credit for — more than just colds and unsuspecting wild animals. They may not have all of the details, but they listen, they watch and they talk.

When their parents are anxious, they pick up on that. If they don’t know the hows and whys or if those concerns seem forbidden, they fill in the ambiguity with worry. Given the fear and uncertainty surrounding things like COVID-19, that means they’re probably scared and probably have been for months.

Much about the near future remains up in the air — school districts across Colorado have pushed back start dates, for example — so there’s a world of ambiguity for children and adults alike.

That means hard conversations aren’t far behind.

Parents must take time to talk to children about what’s going on, even if that means having discussions about the world. But these conversations can go a long way toward helping curb doomsday thinking in the short term and, in the long term, give children important tools for coping with the harder parts of life and the feelings that come with it.

“The best way to help kids overcome anxiety isn’t to try to remove stressors that trigger it,” said Dr. Clark Goldstein of the Child Mind Institute, discussing one such feeling. “It’s to help them learn to tolerate their anxiety and function as well as they can, even when they’re anxious. And as a byproduct of that, the anxiety will decrease or fall away over time.”

Worth noting, tone matters.

In published content on talking to kids about COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control, Harvard Medical School and Mayo Clinic all have said that maintaining a calm attitude helps.

Kids of all ages rely on their parents for a sense of security, so that calm helps parents to avoid passing on anxieties unintentionally.

Dr. Mark Reinecke of the Child Mind Institute warns specifically against dwelling on worst-case scenarios.

“Keep a sense of perspective, engage in solution-focused thinking and balance this with mindful acceptance,” he says.

Dr. Jeffrey Lichtman of the Touro College Graduate School of Education calls COVID-19 in particular a teachable moment. He explains that the recommended precautions for preventing the spread of COVID-19 are just good everyday hygiene. Little things like that can give kids a better sense that they’ll be safe.

The complement to mindset is setting.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, a UK-based organization, recommends picking somewhere relaxed and neutral for the conversation to happen. They suggest a walk or a bike or car ride, but parents should know their kids well enough to make that call. NSPCC also says that, for families with multiple children, making one-on-one time for the conversation can be beneficial.

Further, it’s important to have the conversation before it gets too late in the evening and kids (or parents) get too tired to give the conversation the energy it needs.

Sometimes, the hardest part can be starting. The NSPCC has said that a too-forceful approach can be counterproductive and cause children to shut down rather than open up. For some subjects and some kids, a more oblique approach can help. Consider using a relevant book or video that dovetails into the conversation naturally.

Some subjects, however, benefit from a more direct approach, particularly those tied to a specific traumatic event. Dr. Deborah Serani, a psychologist and contributor to Psychology Today, said that when there’s bad news like the death of a loved one, it’s important to be prompt and direct.

Use the words dead, died and death, not euphemisms like “passed on” or “in a better place.”

“Research shows that using realistic words to describe death helps the grieving process,” Serani said.

Worth noting also, children should feel heard and have space to ask questions, according to both Child Mind Institute writer Rachel Ehmke and the NSPCC. Giving them the space to ask questions and to open up about their concerns helps parents better meet their emotional needs during such conversations. Ehmke stressed the importance of taking kids’ questions seriously, even if they’re about something that might at first seem frivolous. Honest, clear answers give kids space to build a clearer understanding of tough situations.

Sometimes, that means the answer is “I don’t know,” and that’s fine, according to both Ehmke and Serani, whether “I don’t know” leads to researching an answer or making peace with uncertainty.

According to Child Mind Institute child psychologist Dr. Janine Domingues, it’s helpful to let kids know that they’ll be kept up to date if new information surfaces, which reassures them and keeps lines of communication open.

Be aware of kids asking the same question or nearly the same question

over and over, especially if they become more anxious or upset over time. Dr. Jacqueline Sperling, a contributor for Harvard Medical School’s health blog, said this behavior is called reassurance seeking. If it happens regularly, it could be a symptom of unmanaged anxiety.

Sperling’s recommendation, in that case, is to consult a mental/behavioral health professional about cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT, which can teach them healthier coping skills.

All of this demands parents practice vulnerability with their kids, which for many is much harder than reading up on hard subjects and being prepared to answer questions.

It’s OK to admit that scary things like pandemics, serious illness and missing school friends are scary and emotionally painful. Kids need help avoiding trains of thought that keep them stuck in catastrophic daydreams and nightmares, but they also need to see that it’s normal to feel bad about real things and that such things don’t mean life just stops.

When children see their parents grieving the death of a loved one, it tells them that it’s OK to grieve, Serani said. It’s OK to cry, and it’s OK to cry together.

Sometimes, crying is what healing looks like.

Closer to home, service members and families will find Cheyenne Mountain State Park just out of the Gate 1 entrance to Fort Carson, across Highway 115.

“For those who would like to test themselves, Cheyenne Mountain State Park opened a summit trail in 2018,” Vogrin said. “Visitors can hike to the top of Cheyenne Mountain via the Dixon Trail, which features one-of-a-kind views of Colorado Springs and the Front Range. Hikers can start at the visitors center via the Limekiln Trail and hook up with the Dixon Trail further up.”

Anglers, cyclists and motorcyclists can also find late-season activity opportunities at the Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area near the town of Salida, a two-hour drive from Colorado Springs. Anglers can find walk-and-wade or float-fishing opportunities throughout the scenic Arkansas Valley.

“The river flows are gentler, but families can still have a nice rafting experience in August,” Vogrin said. “We recommend using a guide with one of the outfitters in the area as the river is not something to be taken lightly.”

For families who want to take their furry friends along for a recreation experience, pets are welcome at Lake Pueblo, Lathrop and at Staunton State park, located six miles west of Conifer in Jefferson County. Staunton includes dramatic outcroppings, a waterfall and several streams.
