tools and knowledge that they need to go out and explore on their own, but also develop day hikes and other programs aimed specifically at those with young ones from birth to 4 or 5 years old.”

For families looking to introduce their young children to camping, Schmidt recommended starting small at an established campground such as Farish Recreation Area, located at 12005 Rampart Range Road in Woodland Park.

“If you’ve never camped with a toddler, it might be a little much your first try going out with a tent and trying to camp with your toddler. I’ve been through that struggle,” he said. “You don’t want to be 5 miles down a trail with a toddler and that’s the first time you’re sleeping in a tent with them.”

Fountain Creek Nature Center, 320 Peppergrass Lane in Fountain, and Bear Creek Nature Center, 245 Bear Creek Road in Colorado Springs, also offer low-impact options — as well as local historical knowledge — for inexperienced hikers or young children, Schmidt said.

“Those are a couple of good options for people who are trying to dip their toes into the water,” he said.

As with children, Schmidt recommended a slow start for those unaccustomed to outdoor activity.

“Although it can be enjoyable and they might love it and want to do more activities outdoors, it has the potential to be a little bit high risk and maybe put them off other

outdoor activities,” Schmidt said.

“Start with something low-impact to get your feet wet. That’s a good foot in the door to see what else is out there.”

Palmer Park, along with North Cheyenne Cañon Park and Ute Valley Park — all in Colorado Springs — all offer hiking trails of varying difficulty, Schmidt said.

“There’s something for everyone in North Cheyenne Cañon,” he said.

“It offers day hikes, mountain biking, and it has a lot to offer as far as scenic views and easy access to anything from beginner to intermediate to expert.”

Ute Valley Park also offers bouldering options, which is ideal for those not prepared for the hefty financial investment required for rock climbing, Schmidt said.

“It offers different challenges than rock climbing — you don’t go as high and you’re not climb-

ing up these big long walls – but it is a very enjoyable activity,” he said. “A lot of people like doing that because it’s very low-investment as far as the equipment you need. You don’t need a harness or a rope to be able to boulder.”

Thanks to federal funding, the Peterson Outdoor Recreation Center can offer the necessary equipment at a low cost to Department of Defense cardholders who want to try activities such as rock climbing for the first time, Schmidt said.

“As a beginner, you’re not going to want to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on equipment for something you don’t know if you’re going to like. That’s a high price to pay to realize you don’t like doing something,” he said. “So that’s one of the really nice things about this building is we have a lot of resources to be able to offer people that are beginners in a lot of areas.”

Colorado high country offers service members, families winter fun

ikes Peak region service members can consider themselves fortunate to live within a couple hours’ drive of some of the best outdoor winter recreation the nation has to offer.

Following a fairly dry early season, the snow has been flying of late, so most winter resorts in the state have accumulated a solid snow pack and Outdoor Recreation at Fort Carson is prepared to assist thrill seekers with planned activities for the next few months. All service members, their

families and military retirees are eligible to participate.

Gear and equipment are also available for rent from Outdoor Recreation’s Equipment Checkout Center and there’s no shortage of opportunities to get out and enjoy Colorado’s winter splendor, including skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiling, ice climbing, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing.

Families and single Soldiers don’t even need a car to get to the slopes if they take advantage of Outdoor Rec’s, “Get on the Bus,” trips.

“We offer ski and snowboard trips to Monarch Mountain ski area,” said Erina Patrick, Fort Carson Outdoor Recreation director. “People can package their trip with a lift ticket, equipment rental and transportation. Our goal is to make the trip simple and easy, and all of our trips depart from our building here, so it’s kind of a one-stop shop for a ski trip.”

Skiers and snowboarders can’t beat the rates for these trips, either. If purchased at the resorts, most skiers will pay close to or more than $100 for a daily lift ticket, but at Outdoor Rec, an entire package that

includes transportation, equipment rental and lift ticket will set one back just $85.

Those with their own equipment can get a lift ticket and transportation for $75.

Skiers who may already have a season pass or their own daily lift ticket can opt to pay $55 for transportation and equipment rental. And, for those who only need a transportation, the ride costs $35.

“Get on the Bus” trips are planned for Feb. 23, March 9 and March 23, but skiers and snowboarders must register by the See Winter page 19

A BIRTHDAY IN PARIS The last several years, I’ve spent my girlfriend’s birthday doing what I want to do on her birthday weekend – the annual Pikes Peak Ascent, a 13.32 mile run from the base of Pikes Peak to its summit.

The only activity that needed to occur on the absolute right day was a dinner cruise on the Seine River for the birthday evening, which we highly recommend.

Renate was able to get everything scheduled that we wanted to do, and ensured we were going to have a good time … and we absolutely did!

Montessori Philosophy and How It Benefits the Child

By Jessica Coleman, M.Ed. What is the Montessori philosophy? How does Montessori benefit my child?

These are often questions received from parents that are looking into a Montessori program. I am an educator in a Montessori Primary classroom. I am a Montessorian that has moved towards this philosophy after seeing the benefits from a parent’s perspective as well as that of an educator. Having my background in traditional Elementary education and Montessori has allowed me to see these benefits more clearly.

Montessori is a philosophy of teaching young children that was created by Maria Montessori. It is an inclusive academic program that was developed by astute observation of children and how they learn best. Maria Montessori developed her philosophy in the early 1900’s and it is still applicable today. The Montessori method of teaching children has been shown to suit the needs of children by employing developmentally appropriate practices that are supported by modern day research on young children.

As an educator with a background in Elementary education, I have come to believe wholeheartedly in the Montessori approach to learning versus the tradition approach taken in other school settings. This is because I have personally witnessed the transformation of children’s educational experiences when they are in the Montessori environment. They can accomplish so much more in a Montessori environment because of the way that the environment is designed.

The Montessori philosophy is centered on the child. It is based on their interests and how they learn best. The educational path is based on the individual child and what they are ready to learn. Montessori focuses on independence of the child to prepare them for real world applications. This is accomplished in a variety of ways within the Montessori classroom.

The Montessori approach creates a prepared environment in which the child will find success. The teacher is a part of that prepared environment. The teacher acts more as a guide in this environment, by providing the initial lessons on the materials in the classroom. Observations are conducted by the teacher so the teacher knows what the child needs. During the academic work cycle the teacher observes each child and records what they are working on, how they are doing it, where their sensitive period is, and what the next step may be. Having a trained Montessori teacher benefits the child by providing them consistent lessons. If a child’s sensitive period is missed it will be harder for the child to learn the material. Sensitive periods are the term used in Montessori to describe the windows of development that children experience. By close observation conducted by the teacher, the child benefits greatly because the Montessori teacher is aware of what the child needs to learn next.

The Montessori teacher is also responsible for maintaining the prepared environment. They do this by keeping the shelves neat and clean, not cluttered. Each work has a purpose and all its pieces, nothing is broken, missing, or out of place.

The classroom is maintained each day and prepared for the next day. The benefits of this type of environment for the young child are that is appeals to their sense of order and helps them to refine these senses. In addition, they are drawn to the materials on the shelves and they are not overwhelmed by the classroom environment.

Follow the child is what Maria Montessori said. What this means is to follow the child’s interests and what they are drawn to in the prepared environment. In my experience this means giving lessons within their sensitive periods and not before or after they are ready for something. An example of this is one of my previous students who was four and just missed the cut off for traditional kindergarten by a week. She was ready to read, she could blend all her letter sounds and form words and knew several sight words. She read every day and practiced

sight words every day. This desire to learn came from within her, not from me telling her she needed to. By the end of the school year she knew 220 sight words (kindergartners should know 100 by the end of the school year) and was reading at a mid-first grade reading level. She also excelled in math areas and was able to master her addition and subtraction facts from 1-9. This child wanted to do all these things and the environment in her Montessori classroom enabled her to accomplish this. By the end of the year she was able to test into first grade, because of her drive, the support she received from me, and by providing a prepared environment.

Montessori materials are specific to the Montessori approach and reinforce the philosophy that the child should be able to do the work independently after receiving direction from the teacher. Many of the Montessori materials are selfcorrecting and have control of errors. This allows the child to discover their mistakes and correct them without asking the teacher if it right or not. This strengthens the child’s ability to be intrinsically motivated and builds self-esteem. Another benefit of Montessori materials is that they are designed to allow the child to learn concepts beginning with a concrete foundation before moving to abstraction. An example of this is the math materials found in the Montessori classroom. Children are able to work with and see math concepts in a touchable, tangible form which provides them the foundation needed to move on to more abstract math concepts.

The Montessori classroom is well rounded with a focus on academics, social skills, and emotional stability. We utilize positive redirection to develop the children’s abilities to problem solve and resolve conflicts in a socially acceptable manner. The areas of the Montessori classroom are carefully constructed to help a child build upon their emerging skills and advance at their own pace.

Some of the areas in our classroom environment are: Practical Life, Sensorial, Language, and Math. Practical Life is especially appealing to the young child as it gives them opportunity to practice skills to advance their independence. It also enables the child to refine their abilities so that they are prepared for more complex activities as they get older. Children learn to concentrate on the task at hand in a supportive environment, laying the foundation to prepare their mathematical mind. In Sensorial, children have their first true exposure to classification and invites exploration and discovery. The language area helps children to recognize letter sounds and letters and to express their thoughts through written word. Math is introduced so children become comfortable and familiar with both counting and number symbols. In addition to these core areas, we enrich the environment further with Geography, Culture, and Science.

Children in the Montessori classroom are of mixed ages, in the Primary classroom children are aged 2.5 to six. Having mixed ages allows the children to learn from their peers. Students love watching others do more advanced work and it inspires them to work to achieve the ability to do advanced work. Mixed age classrooms allow for creating a pro-social community within the classroom environment. The young children are guided by the older children and once they become the older child, they are able to become leaders in their environment.

By staying in one classroom for a longer period of time, transitions are lessened so there is less disruption to the child’s learning.

The Montessori philosophy is all these things combined. One cannot function without the other. Each piece goes with one another and provides what is the Montessori philosophy or approach. These all benefit the child in so many ways.

Montessori benefits the child developmentally because it is based on where they are at in their development, in all areas of the classroom academically, socially, and emotionally. Hope Montessori Academy strives to provide this rich environment of learning to all of the children who attend.

Whether you want to donate to a charitable cause or just rent equipment for a day or two, these shops offer something for everyone.

Mountain Chalet offers backcountry, alpine touring and cross country ski rentals and demos. Additionally, the store offers avalanche safety gear rentals including beacons, shovels and probes. “A lot of the skis we rent out can be used in resorts and in the back country,” said Shane Leva, Mountain Chalet store manager. “That’s the difference. You’ll notice our prices will be dramatically higher than everybody else because the setups are a lot more than everyone else is offering.”

Basic alpine touring rentals start at $65 for the first day and $40 for each additional day.

Leva added special, one-of-a-kind demos is $75 for the first day and $55 for each additional day.

“What that gets you is the ski, binding, boots, poles and climbing skins,” he said.

“It breaks in half and ends up looking like a pair of skis,” Leva said. “You go uphill and then put it back together for the downhill.”

Leva said besides REI, Mountain Chalet is the only store in Colorado Springs offering backcountry rentals.

“If you want to get into the backcountry, it’s a fun place to stop by to learn about the gear and get started,” he said.

Leva’s favorite part about working at the store is getting people in the gear for their ideal trip.

“That’s kind of how we started,” he said.

“We started giving back to veterans organizations and it branched out from there.”

Gentges explained the consignment operates on a tiered pricing system.

Anything under $250 and the seller receives 50 percent store credit, $250-500 receives 60 percent and $500 and above receives 70 percent.

“This system encourages people to donate nicer stuff,” Gentges added.

Items to be consigned or donated include skis, snowboards, jackets, boots, bindings, goggles and gloves.

“We typically stick to stuff that’s newer,” Gentges said. “However, we do dabble in some older snowboards, but skis and bindings have to be a certain age and they have to be on a specific list.”

The store also accepts climbing and hiking equipment and apparel.

Gentges said customers have the option to donate their proceeds towards any number of the 23 nonprofit organizations with which the store partners.

“You can donate to anything from the Rocky Mountain Field Institute to Home Frontier, Project Sanctuary and the Springs Rescue Mission to name a few,” he said.

Gentges said 100 percent of net profits go toward charitable causes.

“We’re owned by the Beanstock Foundation, operating out of Denver to support Colorado nonprofits in the area,” he said. “It all goes back to the community. In that vein, we call ourselves a social

Mountain Equipment Recyclers also partners with Kids on Bikes, and in-house organization handling bike consignment.

“A lot of the donated bikes we get go towards our Kids on Bikes program,” Gentges said. “Through the school district kids can earn a bike by attending safety and maintenance classes and showing up for community rides. This gets kids and families involved in cycling.”

Gentges’ favorite part about working for Mountain Equipment Recyclers is the community engagement.

“The fact that were not focused on making money for us, and really trying to give back to the community is the best part,” he said. “It’s a feel good store, and there’s so much random stuff that comes in on donation, it’s really cool to see.

“The store is a cool way to give back for people who have gear just sitting in their garage that want to give it a new life.”

Additionally, Gentges loves talking to people who know little to nothing about skiing and snowboarding or what they should they be looking for in a product.

“I love educating people and getting them inexpensive equipment so they can get out and enjoy the things I love to do as well,” he said.

occurs commonly in people who have recently moved to higher altitudes. And he says that fitness level isn’t a mitigating factor. Even professional athletes have shown signs of altitude sickness.

“The most important thing I tell people now is, ‘Don’t do what I did,’” he said. “You’re not going to acclimatize faster through exertion, so don’t go out and run sprints.

The process needs to happen more slowly.”

He recommends people start by simply walking for a few days, then follow up with slow runs. During slow runs, it’s important to monitor breathing, being careful to use the diaphragm and breathe deeply.

“Short, choppy breaths don’t provide enough oxygen, which means you’re cutting off oxygen to your body,” he said.

He also advises soldiers and family members to get more sleep, because the body regenerates during sleep mode. And, drink more fluids than normal. The highaltitude air is thinner and creates greater fluid loss throughout one’s respiratory system.

“I recommend that people take an iron supplement as well,” he said. “This helps red blood cell functioning (and helps muscles store and use oxygen) and vitamin C, which helps boost the iron.”

Given that people take the appropriate precautions and slow their training regimens to account for altitude change, how long should the acclimatizing process take?

The consensus among fitness industry professionals, athletes and outdoor enthusiasts seems to be that it takes roughly three to six weeks for someone to fully acclimatize to their new higher altitude, although symptoms of altitude sickness through regular activity should lessen within a few days.

That said, many Colorado Springs area residents and military families will travel often into Colorado’s mountains where, they too, can suffer from sickness due to the higher elevation and increased activity.

The Altitude Research Center at the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Medical Campus reports that altitude sickness is more prevalent for people at elevations above 7,500 feet.

The fix for this scenario is similar to lower elevations — limit high level exertion, monitor and try to control breathing, drink plenty of fluids and get a solid amount of sleep, but also avoid alcohol and salty foods.

hen Glen Williams first learned he would be taking on the position of Army Wellness Center director at Fort Carson, he sought advice from friends and other fitness professionals about how to get used to Colorado’s high altitude.

The retired military veteran and long-time Hawaii resident had never lived above sea level, and Colorado Springs sits at 6,530 feet. Nonetheless, he figured there’d be nothing to it.

“I used the ‘BroScience’ method of learning on this topic, which is basically listening to what your bros say,” Williams said.

His bros’ advice? Kick your training up a notch. Get out there and start running, and get your body used to it.

“So, that’s what I did,” he said. “I’m in decent shape, and I wanted to get acclimatized quickly, so I pushed myself hard.”

He experienced some rather alarming symptoms though — shortness of breath, headache, dry throat, dizziness.

He didn’t pay too much attention to these symptoms while he was running, but later that same day, he noticed something strange.

“I’m hanging out in my kitchen and realized that I still couldn’t get my air back,” he said. “The headaches and dizziness didn’t go away either. That’s when I decided to do some research.”

As Williams soon learned, he was experiencing signs of acute altitude sickness.

It’s a problem visitors and new residents experience.

There’s less oxygen in the air at higher altitudes. People who live near sea level have become accustomed to that increased level of oxygen, so when they travel to higher altitudes, their bodies must adjust to this new, lower level of oxygen.

“Red blood cells carry oxygen to your muscles and your brain,” Williams said. “As you work, your body’s red blood cells begin to deplete or diminish, and that means there’s less oxygen being supplied to your body.

So you’re not getting enough oxygen to refuel your body.”

Ultimately, this process produces altitude sickness which, in severe cases, can lead to pulmonary edema, a condition that can be fatal within hours if not treated.

“We rummaged through garbage scattered around the field we were in, trying to survive,” Zachary continued. “I grabbed a trash bag. That is a good way to carry things. Maybe if I ever got to go to school, that would do for my backpack, a trash bag. I picked up a pair of shorts. Wonderful! Clothes are so expensive! Now I don’t need to pay for shorts! I grabbed a discarded bucket then. We could try and find water, even dirty water, I could bring a gallon home with me. After all, we’re so thirsty.”

Zachary ended his blog sharing about how he was able to Skype with a group of kids in the Compassion program. “They were happy and clever, and they had dreams! Kids in poverty had dreams! Dreams that they were determined to accomplish because they believed they could do it!”

“Ideally, we encourage people to sign up by Wednesday prior to their desired trip because trips do fill up and it also helps provide time for people to make arrangements,” Patrick said. “If, for instance, they need to get their rental equipment, it’s easier to obtain it earlier than if they waited until 5 p.m. on the Friday prior to the trip. In that case, it might be tough because there will be a lot of other people renting as well. We also send out an itinerary on Thursdays that relays specific details about the trip.”

The Outdoor Rec Equipment Checkout Center has equipment available for skiing and snowboarding in all size ranges ages 4 and up, that includes boots and bindings.

Outdoor Rec staff members drive the bus, so they accompany each trip and can provide directions and answer questions at the ski mountain.

“This year, we’re also offering a Ski and Soak trip, Feb. 23, which includes a day of skiing or snowboarding at Monarch Mountain, followed by a soak at Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, rates include $65 for transportation and the hot springs, $105 for transportation, lift ticket and hot springs, and $120 for transportation, lift ticket, rental gear and hot springs.

Families and Soldiers who would

prefer to activities other than downhill skiing and snowboarding have plenty of options to choose from.

Fort Carson Outdoor Recreation offers snowshoeing and cross-country ski, snowmobiling and ice climbing trips to in-state destinations, but these trips are organized by the staff for groups (minimum number of participants depends on the activity) with advance notice (a month’s notice is advisable) throughout the winter season. “We like people to have completed our Climbing Wall Orientation class prior to going on our Ice Climbing trip, but that’s not required,” Patrick said.

“People can be a novice rock climber or a novice ice climber and still have a great time.”

The Climbing Wall Orientation covers knot tying, belay techniques and climbing communication.

Peterson Air and Space Museum

The Peterson Air and Space Museum is Colorado’s oldest aviation Museum, site of Colorado Springs’ first municipal airfield. The four original airfield structures built before 1941 still remain, including the beautifully preserved Art Deco passenger terminal. Our airpark has 13 aircraft that showcase the fighter interceptor heritage of North American Aerospace Defense, including three Canadian Air Force jets and the EC-121 Warning Star, an airborne warning and control aircraft. Come tour inside the EC-121 Warning Star. The City Hanger includes an ICBM launch control center, highlights from Air Force Space Command, NORAD, and other examples of our rich military heritage. The Museum is also home to a Medal of Honor Park, where you can learn about the origins of our nation’s highest military honor and help pay tribute to our United States Air Force recipients.

The Museum is located on Peterson Air Force Base so a little preplanning is required if you don’t have a Military ID. Call the museum 719556-4915 or visit www.petemuseum.org by 2PM the work day before your visit to get a visitors pass and check hours. We are open 9AM-4Pm Tuesday-Saturday except holidays.
