A picture’s worth a thousand words, but nobody ever said those words were truth. Roland Reed, pictorialist photographer, was known for his work romanticizing Native American life before the reservation system. His images, while gorgeous, featured constructed and planned scenes that had little to do with reality. To offer visitors insight into the gap between what photographs like Reed’s depicted and the reality that Native Americans face, the Pioneers Museum is working with local artist Gregg Deal, who is Pyramid Lake Paiute.

He’s made his career in part on opposing and challenging stereotypes about Native lives. This exhibition includes a mixture of Deal’s own work and commentary with historic images constructed by Reed, a juxtaposition between what’s real and what’s merely the prevailing narrative.

Locals most likely know artist Gabriella Doussett from the Bemis School of Art at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. She’s been teaching there for the last five years. But when she’s not there or working out of the Cottonwood Center for the Arts, she’s making and showing mixed media and sculptural figurative art. Her current exhibition, “The Song Remains the Same,” features pieces that remind her of her favorite songs.

“I’ve always been very inspired by, mostly classic rock and roll, though I like classical and other kinds of music,” she says. She’s delved deep into the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix for this all-2D arts exhibition. Check Art 111’s website for gallery hours.

AdAmAn fireworks display Pikes Peak Midnight, Dec. 31 This marks the 98th year that the AdAmAn Club has ascended to the top of Pikes Peak on New Year’s Eve to set off a remarkable fireworks display at midnight. While locals can watch the amazing display from miles around, weather depending, the club will spend the 30th hiking up to Barr Camp, where they’ll spend the night. On the 31st, they’ll summit the peak through whipping winter winds and temperatures that can plummet to -50 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep an eye open around 9 p.m., too. That’s when the club test-fires five shells in memory of the original “frozen five” who ascended the Peak in 1922: Ed Morath, Fred Morath, Fred Barr, Willis Magee and Harry Standley.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, named the sixth best zoo in the country by USA Today readers, continues to be a choice attraction for adults and families alike, but it only gets better in the evening.

Through Jan. 1, every night sees the zoo glow with colorful lights, including 85 light sculptures. Outside, patrons can deal with the cold around warming fires throughout the park or purchase hot cocoa.

Patrons can also enjoy one of the zoo’s many indoor enclosures, getting a close-up experience with giraffes, elephants, monkeys, birds, and more. Throughout the park, watch a variety of special animal enrichment sessions and keeper talks, including face-to-face encounters with smaller animals. Check the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo website for a schedule of animal events.

Holidays bring increased safety risk for family pets

The holidays are here, and it’s likely family and friends have already started preparing the meals they look forward to all year. Parties and gatherings present an opportunity for elaborate feasts, where families revel in the holiday atmosphere. For family pets however, the holidays present an increased risk for foodborne illness.

Most people have heard that chocolate is toxic to dogs, but many may be unaware that grapes and raisins can be dangerous as well. Other common flavor producers like onions and garlic can also be toxic for dogs.

“It’s important for people to understand that animals don’t metabolize food the same way we do, especially the fattier foods,” said Capt. Ashley Kotran, veterinary corps officer, Fort Carson Veterinary Center. “A lot of people like to feed meat to dogs, but they should avoid doing so. Dogs can acquire pancreatitis, which is extremely painful, from these types of foods. It’s a costly veterinary emergency as well, so its just not worth it to give them fatty foods.”

Also, those leftover bones may seem harmless following a meal, but when cast aside, they present a tempting feast for pets and can become a significant danger.

Bones can actually get stuck in an animal’s throat or perforate the esophagus. If the bone travels to the stomach or intestines it can cause even worse perforations there. They can also chip or even break teeth and cause other dental problems as well.

While foreign body ingestion occurs more often with dogs, cats tend to suffer from what veterinarians refer to as linear foreign body ingestion.

Mischievous cats can consume ribbon, tinsel and electrical lights on trees. With smaller animals, these can cause either a direct obstruction or they can anchor themselves in the stomach or gastrointestinal CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

“Linear obstructions may require surgical intervention,” Kotran said. “Emergency clinic staff may be able to reach a pet’s obstruction with an endoscope, through the animal’s throat, but if not, it may have to be surgically removed from the abdomen. Either way, it’s a costly procedure.”

Pet owners should also be aware of the potential shock danger of holiday electrical cords and the poisoning danger presented by toxic plants, such as true lilies, daylilies, poinsettias, holly, mistletoe and pine needles.

“It’s a good idea for cat owners to conduct some research on true lilies and dayliles,” Kotran said. “Even plants that don’t have the word ‘lily’ in them can be toxic to cats.

“These plants cause severe kidney disease, and even one or two licks provides enough toxin to harm an animal. Poinsettias also have a reputation for being toxic to pets, with the associated mild vomiting and diarrhea.”

Kotran explained that pets typically show signs of abdominal pain if suffering pancreatitis.

“If a pet sits in a praying position, with their rear end up and their front legs out, that’s abdominal pain,” she said. “Owners should also take notice of pets who are abnormally lethargic. Those who actually see their pet ingest something should call the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals poison control center.

They have vets on call who can tell people exactly what they need to do.”

Though it may be fun and festive to decorate during the holiday time frame, families should pay close attention when stringing holiday decorations. Many include electrical wires, which can present a shock hazard to pets.

Pet owners may notice obvious things, like visible trauma, ulcers in a pet’s mouth, or black and red swollen areas around gums.

after the incident. Sometimes that shock will throw off heart rhythms as well. And, sometimes owners will find an animal passed out.

That could mean they have been chewing on a cord and got a zap and then fainted. So, it’s a good idea to keep emergency veterinarian’s contact information handy.

Calling a veterinarian can help pet owners determine just how serious their pet’s condition is. If a visit to a veterinarian is required, the staff will usually induce vomiting and follow with supportive care.

Families who plan to travel this holiday season either with or without their pets have a few issues to consider.

Kotran recommends that those who will bring their pets along for the trip should make sure they obtain a health certificate for the animal from a veterinarian.

“The health certificate shows that the animal is healthy enough to travel, either by car or plane,” she said. “And, if owners are flying, they should look into specific airline regulations and ensure they’ve met vaccine requirements. A lot of the airlines require the health certificate for animals, especially those of the brachycephalic breeds. Some of those breeds have trouble breathing normally.”

If a pet is traveling by car, ensure they are properly and securely restrained, and away from any air bags.

Families who are hosting a holiday party should consider the disturbances that often accompany them. the clamor and racket of crowds can cause anxiety or stress in some animals, so it’s important to make sure pets have a comfortable place to get away from noise. Table and counter food should also be cleared away when not in use and trash should be covered and kept out of reach of animals.

Ultimately, the holidays remain a busy time for veterinary clinics, and families should keep a 24/7 emergency contact handy in the event their regular provider is closed.

Food, experience for the soul

Few things unite a family during the holidays like food.

Of course, there are gifts, games and sharing stories — and an occasional barb at a family member that, hopefully, doesn’t lead to an altercation.

But when it’s time to throw down in the kitchen, on the grill or wherever it is one chooses to do their mealmaking during the holidays, rest assured, most people can’t wait for that moment when dinner is presented.

Picture it: that scrumptious turkey coming out of the oven with the fancy covers on its legs, resembling something you may have seen on TV. Except this is real life, and you have the privilege and the pleasure of eating it!

Or maybe your thing is that savory sweet potato pie that your grandma makes. The kind that makes you change from jeans to comfy pants because you know extra room will be needed after a few extra slices.

Food is the gift that doesn’t need to be wrapped and comes from the soul. Not to mention it provides people energy to make it through the holidays.

Local restaurateurs and management discuss a few of their favorite traditions during the holiday season and how they use food to keep their loved ones happy.

Owner, Bingo Burger While the restaurant is known for its mouthwatering burgers, its use of local ingredients and local brews, Richard Warner, owner of Bingo Burger, said he loves to go the extra mile during the holidays.

Warner said this time of year is a big deal for his family and he enjoys preparing meals during the season.

As he does with Bingo Burger, Warner said he makes sure his holiday meals are all locally purchased. “(We have) locally sourced, pastured turkey, San Luis Valley potatoes and sweet potatoes, Pueblo chilies as well as lots of heavy cream and butter in the mashed potatoes,” Warner said. “We’ll finish the feast, even though we are all usually stuffed, with a delicious pumpkin and fresh apple tart from my wife Mary’s Hopscotch Bakery.”

Those smiles on the faces of their family and friends after that apple tart is an experience Warner attempts to share with customers.

While patrons of Bingo Burger don’t receive that savory dessert, Warner said they spread that joy in other ways.

“We’re currently featuring a Boozy Shake made with rum from Springs’ own 1350 Distillery and Colorado City Creamery ice cream,” Warner said. “Both (Bingo Burgers) are located directly on the path of Springs’ and Pueblo’s Parade of Lights. Those nights are incredibly busy, but we work hard to make certain everyone has a great time and leaves with a smile on their face and extremely satisfied.”

Oskar Blues General Manager Jenn Cancellier said she and her family go for the traditional meal during their Christmas feast, “with all the fixings.” But there’s more to the meal than just food, she said.

“It reminds me of home,” Cancellier said. “It reminds me of the things you’re thankful for: family, friends and good health — to have everybody together in the same room. It makes you feel grateful and appreciate that you have that time together with everyone.”

Cancellier said, “We go all out in decorating the restaurant” to give it that holiday feel.

“We have a Christmas tree upstairs and downstairs and have Christmas lights all over the place and there are snowflakes everywhere,” Cancellier said. “We try to make it feel very Christmas-y when you walk in our venue. It’s a Southern, Cajun explosion of multiple things. So really you’re getting a lot of comfort food.

“For people coming from the South who don’t have that to come home to, they can come into our restaurant and have that gumbo or jambalaya that they might not be able to get when they go out for Christmas dinner or at home.

BOBBY LASHWOOD

General Manager, Paninos While Paninos crafts longtime favorites at its multiple locations in Colorado Springs, Bobby Lashwood, general manager, knows how to venture outside the box as well.

Lashwood, who’s been in the food industry for more than 15 years, said he loves to make prime rib for a holiday meal for his family.

“I’ve been doing that for about 10 years,” Lashwood said. “The previous restaurant I was at, we cooked it on a regular basis and it worked during the holidays, so I stuck with that.”

Lashwood doesn’t get too fancy with the meal, but makes sure the prime rib is moist and succulent when his family is ready to eat.

“I wrap it and bound it in rib rope and make sure that’s tight in a circle,” Lashwood said. “That way the juices flow properly and equally. And I just put salt and pepper on it and roast it for six hours.”

Whether it’s at home with loved ones or visiting a local joint during the holidays, making the most of that time with family and friends is important, he said.

Yeah, you can buy a lot of stuff online or from major-label food producers via grocery and department stores. But, as always, we’re going to direct you instead to look locally for more unique and special items that show much more personality and love.

Plus, these items will generally be more boutique and craftoriented, meaning better ingredients and authenticity where it matters.

Some of the following recommendations are pretty straightforward, like, “buy and eat me!” While others hold a more experiential element, like, “DIY or learn-to-make.” The following are just a small selection from around town, of course, so if you don’t see exactly the right gift for your respective loved one, perhaps these picks will at least get you thinking about similar possibilities.
