or those who serve or have served in the military, as well as their immediate family, part of life is regularly following orders to deploy or change duty stations. And over the course of those duties and moves, a service member will wind up collecting things along the way, keepsakes that tie to memories of bygone times, places and people. They might be official, things like decommissioned uniforms or old rank patches. They might be commemorative, things like challenge coins and event T-shirts.

Whatever they are or what they mean, they’re important.

So why leave them to get lost or damaged? Why not do something more to honor their meaning?

here’s something special about playing a vinyl album; the soothing sound of the needle gliding around the record, creating its warbly, blissful tones and vocals.

Music lovers can enjoy and share that experience during the holidays. In recent years, vinyl records sales have surged despite much of the world shifting to streaming.

Yes, people continue to share Spotify Wrapped playlists to highlight various songs, artists and albums. Vinyl music, though, is a tangible (and sometimes nostalgic) gift.

“The process of everyone sitting down, wiping off a record, putting it on and in 24 minutes you have to get up and flip [the record] is beautiful,” said Tim Atherton, co-owner of Earth Pig Music.

“Music is a good gift because it’s great for the soul and records tend to slow us down.”

Reminiscing about a classic album or recalling parents playing vinyl records provides a bonus gift in addition to a record.

Bryan Ostrow, co-owner of What’s Left Records, said it serves as mental medicine.

“Music gives people a sense of community,” Ostrow said. “Going to a record store and flipping through records when you’ve had a bad day is a therapeutic experience. Music brings people together and they need music to bring them together while they can’t physically do so.”

Both Earth Pig Music and What’s Left Records have an array of vinyl records — new and used.

Be Prepared for EXTREME WEATHER

Both co-owners shared some of their favorite genres and artists.

Earth Pig Music (1953 W. Unitah St.) Atherton’s passion for music began as a kid and he’s developed a palet for various genres music since.

The store has thousands of vinyl records in the $20-$50 range. Atherton said Earth Pig sells mostly used records, but they have new albums and newer pressings of old records.

Recommendations Funk

Whether as solo artist or with a group, George Clinton’s music transcended time.

Atherton said he enjoys Clinton’s funk vibe and his ability to capture the audience with his vibrant style.

“I think George Clinton just had an absolutely wonderful groove and he makes me smile,” Atherton said. “We all like to share things that make us smile and hope it makes other people smile. He has a lot to say if you listen to the lyrics.”

Blues

Atherton’s father, Terry, played blues albums throughout Atherton’s childhood. Now, Atherton shares that adoration.

“I don’t know if blues is a common genre, but I really think people should give it a try because of those mellow rhythms in their songs,” Atherton said.

Reggae

Why not spin a vinyl reggae record during the holidays?

Atherton said reggae exudes passion and soothing tones that can resonate with all listeners.

Atherton recommended artists such as the Twinkle Brothers, Jacob Miller, Dennis Brown, Bob Marley and Hugh Mundell.

“It’s not a commercially viable genre, so a lot of people don’t give it a chance, but it’s good for the soul,” he said. “[Reggae artists] have a lot to say. Some of the Rasta’s see the world for what it is.

I listen to some of their songs or sing lyrics and I go, ‘Man, this is relevant today and these lyrics are from 40 years ago.’”

What’s Left Records (829 N. Circle Drive) Ostrow, along with his brother, Sean Ostrow, started What’s Left Records in August using unemployment payments.

The outside of their store displays a mural created by artists in the Knobhill Urban Arts District. What’s Left Record’s vinyl collection is as vibrant as the artwork.

Ostrow said they have “a couple thousand” records ranging from $2 to $50, depending on condition.

“We have music from someone who probably recorded in their basement to U2 or Modest Mouse,” he said.

Similar to Atherton, Ostrow said vinyl records capture a listener’s attention in ways streaming music cannot.

“You open up [a vinyl record], you flip the record and you take the time to listen to it,” he said. “I think people realize the beauty in physical copies of music, especially with vinyl records.”

Recommendations Pop

The British rock band Coldplay gained popularity in the mid-1990s and continues to produce hits.

Since their inception, the band has

released eight albums and ‘Parachutes,’ the band’s freshman release, went ninetimes platinum since July 2000.

“We just got a press of their album [Parachutes],” Ostrow said. “As a big, tough metal guy, I really enjoyed the vinyl album. It’s a classic and has so many amazing hits.”

Rock

The American rock band Hum also made its name in the 1990s with albums such as “Fillet Show,” “Electra 2000,” “You’d Prefer An Astronaut” and “Downward is Heaven.”

They disbanded in 2000 but reunited this year to make a record, which What’s Left Records has vinyl copies of in their store.

“I recently listened to their new album [Inlet],” Ostrow said. “For me, it’s definitely album of the year.”

Hip-hop

Ostrow said he enjoys the energy and style of New York City’s own, A Tribe Called Quest.

The musicians from Queens formed in 1985 and compiled multiple hit records including “The Low End Theory” and “Midnight Marauders.”

“We have several hip-hop albums in our store and [A Tribe Called Quest] is one of my absolute favorites groups to listen to,” he said.

Music has the ability to uplift spirits and change someone’s mood. With the madness of 2020, Atherton said it’s important to use music to keep emotions in balance.

“When times are crazy, I think we need to go back to what makes us happy,” Atherton said. “This year, I’ve hiked and fished a lot but I’ve also listened to a lot of music. Music can remind us why we put up with all the crap. It’s food for the soul and we need to eat up.”

he holiday season at the end of 2020 is bound to be a bit different than in years past. As extended family gatherings and celebrations take a hiatus during the pandemic, most holiday events have also been postponed or canceled. Similarly, people may think that community-assistance agencies’ activities have also slowed down.

But while the anxiety of interacting with people during a third wave of the pandemic may inhibit many to forgo volunteer plans, nonprofit agencies are reporting that volunteers are needed more now than perhaps ever around the world.

Joey Bautista, Fort Carson Volunteer Services man-

ager, said that while people were sheltering in their homes during the first pandemic wave, helping agencies such as the Marian House Soup Kitchen never stopped serving those in need.

“It’s a little more difficult to volunteer during these times, as local organizations take precautionary measures, but they need volunteer help, especially in this envrionment,” he said. “Most helping agencies require their volunteers to pre-register before working in this environment, so it’s important for people to find the type of work that suits them best and then contact the corresponding agencies as soon as they can.”

Potential seasonal volunteers can make the process of finding the right opportunity easier by contacting a resource agency.

“Army Community Service (ACS) at Fort Carson has quite a lengthy list of helping agencies on an off post that people can learn more about,” he said. “Those who put a little planning and research in prior to searching for opportunities should have better success at finding just the right fit for them.”

ACS’s resource list includes more than 50 local agencies that assist the community in a variety of ways, including the American Red Cross, CASA of the Pikes Peak Region, the Boys & Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, Operation Homefront, Catholic Charities, Silver Key Senior Services, the Salvation Army and Pikes Peak United Way. Leaders at Carson’s BOSS program, a single-soldier activity group, continue to set up opportunities for people to volunteer at agencies like Habitat for Humanity throughout the year.

Before choosing an agency to assist, however, volunteers should answer a number of questions for themselves.

“It’s a good idea to consider the number of hours or days you have to contribute,” Bautista said. “From there, you should decide if you want to utilize your skills or if you want to venture out and open your horizons. Volunteering for a limited time during the holiday season is a great way to gain a new experience and possibly network with people you would probably never meet otherwise.”

Bautista said many helping agencies attempt to place volunteers in areas where their skills would be most useful. But, that’s another aspect that potential volunteers should think about before jumping in, especially if they are exclusively looking for seasonal opportunities.

“Typically, this time of year, people should be flexible with the type of work they’re willing to perform,” Bautista said. “For example, my kids and I volunteer at the Marian House Soup Kitchen and the managers there typically put me to work washing dishes. And, I’m fine with that because I want my kids to be able to interact with the folks in the dining hall. A lot helping agencies will put volunteers to work where they need the help. It just makes sense.”

Potential volunteers should also be prepared to attend an organization’s volunteer orientation, where they learn various aspects of the volunteer experience specific to that agency. Most, if not all, agencies will require that this year, when they can relay details about specific protective measures, such as social distancing rules, face covering requirements and limited group sizes. Some may also assist children and require their volunteers to pass a background check.

“There may be some administrative tasks to be performed, so it’s a good idea to reach out to an organization a couple of weeks prior to the dates you’re looking at volunteering” Bautista said. “Attending a volunteer orientation is also a great way to learn about the mission and philosophy of the organization you’re volunteering for.”

Learning about an organization and taking an honest assessment of yourself are two of the most

important steps that potential volunteers should take, according to Bautista.

“When we first meet people who want to volunteer, they’ll typically say they either don’t know what to do or that they’ll do anything,” he said. “But, when you start talking with them, you find out there are things they’re not willing to do. So, thinking about what you want to do will ultimately lead you to a better volunteer experience. That increases the chance that you’ll volunteer again.”

Even people who struggle with inflexible work schedules or can only serve their community in a one-time stint have ample opportunities to do so. For example, Fort Carson military police organized a toy drive during last year’s holiday season. The MPs collected donated toys and delivered them to the Court Appointed Special Advocates office later the same week.

Their demanding schedule didn’t allow them to make a longer commitment, but they still wanted to volunteer or help community members any way they could.

Whether people have a lot of time or even just a little, most all volunteer help is greatly appreciated.

“Fort Carson ACS can connect volunteers with resources that conduct holiday-time toy drives as well,” said Tonya Dower, ACS volunteer coordinator. “Those who are looking to volunteer in an administrative capacity can also contact their local military spouses club.”

The holidays bring out the best in many and worst in some. Forging a strategy to endure could get you through the tough times.

“More often than not, mental health isn’t paid attention to until it’s in a spot where people begin to notice it,” said Jessica Ditson, Schriever Air Force Base violence prevention innovator. “During the holidays people have more family time and that can be with nuclear family. Sometimes we assume people come from a positive family and that’s not always the case.”

During holiday months, Ditson said it’s important to do maintenance checks to maintain a positive mood and ensure everyone remains cordial.

“We have to keep tabs on how we feel throughout the day,” she said. “Are my thoughts healthy? If not, are they something I can change? Do I need to ask someone to give an outside perspective? ...Your mental health needs to be at the forefront of what you’re doing.”

Dealing with family Visiting family doesn’t always resemble a Hallmark movie. The most peace many experience is during the car ride or flight to and from their destination.

“Oftentimes we feel like we have obligations to visit family,” Ditson said. “Sometimes, in the case of marriage, one spouse or the other is more or less excited about [seeing family]. That can cause problems in a relationship. It’s not like in movies when Santa shows up with everything we want, saves the day and it’s all joy.”

Tech Sgt. Lathaniel Leigh, Schriever Chaplains Corps religious affairs airman, said visiting family should be a positive experience.

“Focusing on what can be controlled is key,” Leigh said. “Learning new ways to stay in touch and connect can greatly benefit anyone.”

Limiting contact with certain family during a visit is a practice Ditson said curbs stress and helps provide a better vacation.

Shortening interactions can also eliminate tension and ease strain on family relationships.

“You have to be mature enough and in a good place emotionally to know whatever a person says doesn’t have to be your truth,” Ditson said. “It can be theirs, and that’s OK. Your job isn’t to change someone’s mind or bring them to your point of view. It’s to be present with them during this time.”

Vlogger chronicles her

itness can be a relative term. For many folks, passing an Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) would be a clear indicator that a person was “in shape” or “fit for duty.” For Sgt. Earledreka Toles, however, it hardly measured up.

“I think the APFT is too easy,” she said recently. “So, when I stopped maxing out my run times a while back, I knew I was in trouble.”

The three-year Army veteran and former collegiate track athlete felt changes to her diet and exercise were proving to be ineffective and that she felt sick, depressed and overwhelmed by the process of getting into the kind of shape she desired.

“When I was in college, youth and competitive sports kept me in shape,” she said. “But, as I grew older and settled into a life of work, my motivation [to stay fit] declined.”

While attempting to fix her motivation problem, Toles tried her hand at earning the Expert Soldier Badge, a grueling event that challenges a Soldier’s fitness, among other combat skills. Then she completed an assessment for the Security Force Assistance Brigade, another physically demanding test that she passed, but suffered through.

But while proving to herself that she was fit enough, especially at short-term tests of strength and endurance, she still felt overweight and out of shape.

Perhaps worse, she lacked the internal motivation to keep working at it consistently.

The fix, she says, came from a surprising place — YouTube.

It turns out Toles is a bit social-media savvy. She’s hosted a video log (vlog) for a few years now, where she speaks to viewers about what life is like for a Soldier.

“It’s kind of geared toward recruits,” Toles said of the vlog. “But, since I vlog about life as a Soldier, a lot of other service members can identify and empathize with it… and me.”

YouTube views her as sort of hit as well. She has 6,700 subscribers and the vlog continues to grow. What’s important, however, is that after Toles vlogged about her fitness struggles, one of her subscribers challenged her to do something about it.

Now she posts from the gym, setting her camera up near a machine or

free-weight station while talking with her subscribers about fitness routines, nutrition and mental health.

“Most of what the military puts out [on television or the internet] is pretty stiff,” she said. “I like to make my posts fun, witty, entertaining, if you will. No one wants to watch a 15-minute-long boring video, so I try to make my [vlog posts] high energy and interactive.”

While attempting to meet her subscribers’ challenges, “Dreka” went full vegan, among other changes. She also enrolled in a fitness program at Fort Carson’s Army Wellness Center (AWC).

Since Sept. 8, her first day at AWC, Sgt. Toles has dropped 15 pounds and feels like her physique is returning to her college track days.

“The fix was the conversations I had with the staff at AWC,” she said. “After my initial lean-body-mass assessment, I learned I was actually obese for my height and gender. The first class I attended was called ‘Upping Your Metabolism.’

For Toles, the education and information she soaked in from AWC staff was most important for her fitness turnaround.

“I learned I should be tracking the food I put into my body, getting 10,000 steps a day, knowing the ingredients in foods,” she said. “And, I have so much energy now. I can think more freely. I remember things better. The pounds are coming off. It’s amazing to witness.”

Every discussion — whether it’s about the pandemic, sports, music — builds discomfort and creates a negative environment.

Setting boundaries prior to a conversation helps avoid frustrations and allows for peace of mind.

“You have to be emotionally intelligent enough to know if you can have certain conversations on a given day,” Ditson said. “Do I want to have this conversation with this person? Is being right worth what happens next? That doesn’t mean in an emotional outburst kind of way, but just to know when to cut it off or when you have the mental bandwidth to engage on whatever the topic may be.

“Give the [conversation] the respect it’s due so no one is emotionally charged.

You don’t want it to end with someone having hurt feelings or slamming doors.”

Putting restrictions on political conversations is also critical. Though the election concluded in November, the aftermath lingers.

knowing the audience helps prevent unwarranted emotions.

“It doesn’t matter which administration you choose, there’s always a lot of room for discussion,” Ditson said. “It could be a very healthy conversation, but you may know it’s not going to end that way. You have a choice to manage your expectations and say, ‘This has been the pattern of behavior whenever we discuss politics and I know what’s coming.’”

The coronavirus pandemic has separated families and friends for nearly a year. Many remain indoors, abiding by government-issued mandates.

In some cases, especially for the military, Leigh said it’s their first time

away from a family construct during November and December.

With many military members, depression and anxiety increase during this season and Ditson said that’s due to a change of pace and too much or too little family contact.

Rather than feel glum, Leigh suggests building bonds and character through the situation.

“I find I learn the most when I [step] outside my comfort zone,” Leigh said. “I do my best to encourage new experiences while also partaking in traditions [military members] are used to and sharing with others what those [experiences] look like. Start new traditions or keep in touch with old ones. Make new friends; find ways to show others you care.”

Excited and energized, Toles began creating videos about her fitness journey and posting them on her vlog.

“I am a 33-year-old woman who is

obese, but by the world’s standards, I’m someone who looks healthy. And I’m still active in the Army. What is life like for a parent who works and has two kids at home. I’m so passionate about helping Soldiers and recruits and people like me because we don’t all have the answers.

But, when you find somebody who does, you have to stay connected to those types of people.”

Recently she began a pilot video project, where she posts videos three time a week.

She calls Mondays, Military Monday, when her posts cover military content.

What brings joy to some, though, might not for others. Leigh said individuals should explore to learn what they cherish.

“I find great joy in a hard workout or packaging meals and handing them to homeless,” Leigh said. “[You can] invite others to do the things you enjoy and be available when others ask you to share in the things that bring them joy.”

Whether in person or via technology, people should ensure the holidays remain a joyous experience. Ditson said to slow down and appreciate the moment rather than focus on the negative.

“We’re so busy moving on to that next task or opportunity that we don’t give ourselves time to check in,” Ditson said.

“It’s crucial, especially during this time of the year, to step away and say, ‘Maybe I need to slow down’ or ‘Today is the day I need to focus on my mentality so I can communicate how I need to do with family or friends.’”

She’s even made videos along with Chapman-Hamilton. The pair have covered such topics as food tracking, resistance training, consistency and the importance of using a fitness tracker.

Most military bases in the area offer wellness center services, which include educational and informational classes, and Chapman-Hamilton explained that the Fort Carson AWC is open to all active duty service members in the area.

The human body’s basic survival and maintenance needs do not stop. According to the World Health Organization, adults ages 18-64 should get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week — that includes those who have disabilities or chronic conditions. People over 65, too, should spend at least 150 minutes a week doing moderate exercise appropriate for their health, focusing more on strength and balance exercises. Children 17 or younger need an hour a day of physical activity, predominantly aerobic.

But COVID-19 has made large gatherings dangerous and irresponsible, so those who rely on the gym for exercise may find meeting those needs more difficult.

Further, while Colorado’s natural splendor can be a playground year-round for winter sports enthusiasts and those who don’t mind bundling up, that’s not for everyone. Further, that may not be safe for those who have conditions or family whose health requires them to take additional precautions. Thus, it’s useful to be able to get proper exercise in the home.

According to Dr. Emily Harold, a sports medicine specialist at the University of Utah, it’s important for people starting a new exercise regimen to give their joints and tendons time to adapt to the new demands.

Harold says they can be prevented by incorporating rest days for tendon groups and escalating exercise slowly.

That’s important especially because joint injuries like tendonitis and tennis elbow are common and take a long time to heal compared to muscle injuries.

“Typically, it starts as a kind of pain that some people get off and on, and then usually what happens, it doesn’t keep you from doing anything when it initially starts,” said Harold in a 2016 interview. “So you feel the pain, but then you keep doing that same activity because you want to do it. And then it gets to the point where you can’t do that activity anymore, and at that time it’s very severe. It can be really hard to treat. Some of these tendon injuries can take three to six months of real good therapy and treatment to recover. And so it’s much better to prevent them from happening in the first place.”

Those interested in building resilience in connective tissue ought to consider tai chi as an exercise. This Chinese martial art dates back to the late 12th century, and various styles are practiced around the world. The

basic practice requires no equipment and limited space, so it’s great for COVID. Make no mistake: tai chi is a martial art, and with proper training, it can be used for self-defense — fans of the popular cartoon Avatar: the Last Airbender should recognize it as the basis for “waterbending.” But the focus of the practice on the joints, as well as its relatively low impact and slower pace, makes it popular among older populations.

“As we get older, it’s not our biceps that go out or our triceps. It’s our shoulders, our elbows our hips, our knees or ankles,” says Julie Parler.

Those interested in building resilience in connective tissue ought to consider tai chi as an exercise.

She’s a long-time practitioner of the Yang family style of tai chi, which is the most widely practiced style worldwide. Her husband, Michael Parler, runs the Tai Chi Association of Colorado Springs and is its Sifu, or teacher. He has been practicing tai chi for 30 years.

“Michael helps people to open those open those gateways, open the body up,” says Parler. “We focus gently on the joints and the connective tissue, and how to move energy through the connective tissues.”

Specifically, that energy is ch’i, or qi, a Chinese metaphysical concept. While science doesn’t recognize the existence of qi, it does serve as a useful tool for visualizing a combination of physical phenomena including the intentional tension and compression of certain muscles in concert, as well as blood flow. The core principle of tai chi is the water-like flow of qi through the body. For those interested in training in tai chi, Sifu Parler offers video courses through his school’s website (taichicoloradosprings.com), as do many other practitioners.

balance more than the rest, and the United States Air Force fitness test looks at strength and aerobic endurance. But a healthy body needs all four types of exercise to be fit and resilient.

“Sometimes we’re trying to get outside and run, and then we’re kind of losing sight of that other facet of fitness which is flexibility,” says Dionne Roberts, a local yoga instructor trained by the Colorado school of yoga.

“Yoga is a really fantastic way to utilize your space at home. All you need is a section that is equivalent to a mat [about six feet by two feet], so even if you don’t own a yoga mat, there’s no reason that you can’t still [practice].”

Roberts practices multiple styles of yoga, but she teaches integrated vinyasa, a modified version of vinyasa yoga, which sees practitioners holding poses only for the length of a breath. It achieves the deep stretch that most people expect from yoga, but Roberts and other practitioners of integrated vinyasa hold certain poses for longer — three to five breaths, say — for meditative purposes. Other styles will hold poses for even longer, which can provide balance and static strength training.

“You might find that you have an accelerated heart rate and you get a little bit sweaty,” says Roberts of her own practice. “I mean, even just staying in those static poses, it can be a little surprising, as you start to shake, that your body starts to turn on the temperature gauge a little bit more too.”

For those interested in learning or practicing yoga, Roberts’ teacher, Boulder-based Gina Caputo, offers online classes almost daily. Local yoga studio Asana also offers multiple live-streamed classes every day, which Roberts says can help offer a sense of pseudo-companionship, even when practicing in isolation.

“Flexibility is probably the most overlooked component of physical fitness, and you need to be patient with yourself as you move towards those goals,” Roberts advises. “You might not be able to do a pose like an Instagram yoga teacher can, and you shouldn’t expect that the same way you wouldn’t just walk out your front door on day one and go run 10 miles.”

As COVID quarantine restrictions continue, it’s important to maintain complete physical fitness. Practices like tai chi and yoga are just two ways a person can maintain fitness with limited space and no specialized workout equipment, as well as exercising the body in ways that push-ups and jumping jacks do not. Because even in lockdown, life goes on.
