or many people, the New Year’s resolution concept rolls around every January. Health club memberships swell during the year’s first two months while stationary bikes and elliptical machines are hot sellers.

By March, however, most resolvers have petered out.

Glen Williams, director of Fort Carson’s Army Wellness Center, said this a typical pattern.

“I think part of the fitness-resolution

failure lies in the whole concept of the resolution itself,” he said. “January 1st provides a perfect starting point for people who want to change things up and try to get fit. The trouble is, people make a fitness resolution without putting a whole lot of thought into the methodology behind it.”

Most people make that resolution to lose 10 pounds, for example. But, after three to four weeks of eating what they think are healthier foods and exercising three to four times a week, they’re left sore, hungry and exhausted. Meanwhile, the scale shows

them little results for their efforts.

To Williams, this sort of resolution represents a narrow view of what people are trying to accomplish. Alternatively, positive results usually require a change in mindset.

Instead of resolving to lose a certain amount of weight, people should think in terms of wanting to make better choices and being better informed for the long term.

“We advise people to take baby steps,” he said. “Instead of drinking three sodas a

day, try to cut it to one and replace two of those sodas with water. The idea is to start slow and take another baby step at the end of a month. Maybe by the end of a month, for example, try to cut soda out entirely.”

What can really be helpful for people, Williams said, is learning that there are educational and testing resources available to them. Most military installations have a wellness center that can provide these resources and help people make headway toward their fitness goals. Service members, their families, retirees and DoD civil-

ians are all eligible to use these resources at no charge. At Fort Carson, for example, all people need to do is call or visit the AWC to make an appointment.

At the Fort Carson AWC, health educators provide people with body composition and metabolic rate tests. People may say, “That’s great, but how will knowing this baseline information help me attain my fitness goals?”

What most people don’t understand is that it took them a lot longer than three to four weeks to acquire those extra pounds.

Weight loss is all about calories, Williams explained. At the end of each day, people need to burn more calories than they consume.

So, how many calories does someone need to eat in order to lose weight?

“That’s a very difficult question,” Williams said. “Most people have no idea, but these baseline tests provide that information and allow people to track their progress with subsequent tests over time.

A resting metabolic rate is one objective measure that tells someone how many calories they need to simply exist in a 24hour period, “Because we can measure that reliably, we can build on that to give you an accurate picture of how many calories you need from one day to the next,” Williams said.

Along with information, health educators at AWC facilities also help people with proper goal setting. “Fitness goals need to be measurable, attainable and realistic,” Willaims said. “And, they need to be time centered and time dependent.”

Becoming knowledgeable about what’s realistic and attainable in a certain time frame is invaluable toward meeting goals.

Losing weight and exercising and making dietary changes are both cumulative and trending effects.

“People hear about the Keto Diet, fasting diets, the Atkins Diet, for example… well, the one thing all these diets have in

common is they restrict caloric intake,” Williams said.

Wellness center staff encourage people to begin using a food journal, if even only for a week, where they can track their daily caloric intake.

The caloric balance process is simple. If a person consumes 3,500 calories a day and the sum total of their activities burns up 3,000 calories a day, then that person has a 500-calorie surplus every day. Humans store energy as fat. If for example, there is 3,500 calories in a pound of fat, give or take, then every seven days that person is gaining a pound of fat.

Incorporating information about a person’s daily activities can help provide a picture of where adjustments can be made.

“This is what we call ‘meeting a person where they’re at,’” Williams said.

Once people gain a good idea of what they are consuming they can then begin making adjustments to their activities, the foods they purchase and the ways they prepare their food. “Basically, if you burn more calories than you consume, you’re going to lose weight,” said Williams.

Activity levels can range dramatically from one person to the next, but Williams said most people can make health headway by simply walking more, parking further from office buildings and taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

When people make that New Year’s resolution to drop 10 pounds, they are most likely setting themselves up for soreness, hunger and failure. But, developing a different mindset can have dramatic effects.

“Scientific studies show that it takes 21 days to break a habit,” Williams said. “But the studies also show it takes 90 days to solidify a habit. By the end of January most people have crashed and burned on their New Year fitness resolution. “That’s why by the start of the second quarter, you’ll find plenty of gym membership discounts available.”

ew Year’s resolutions are often tangible goals — lose 10 pounds, read 30 books, run 5 miles a day.

Mental health goals are more abstract, but equally important, and perhaps never more so than during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, local mental health professionals say.

With its financial expectations, endless string of social commitments, and the pressure to partake in holiday cheer, the “most wonderful time of the year” can quickly become overwhelming, El Paso County Health Promotion Coordinator Michelle Hewitt said.

“At a time of year often touted as magical, sometimes it can be hard to muster the energy to be able to enjoy it,” El Paso County Public Health officials wrote in “Managing Holiday Stress the Manly Way,” a newsletter reminding residents not to lose sight of self care during an often hectic season.

Lori Jarvis, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness in Colorado Springs, has some simple advice for those addressing their mental health in the new year.

“Pay attention,” Jarvis said. “If you feel like you need some help, you probably do.”

This season can bring certain “triggers” — external events or circumstances that may produce psychiatric symptoms such as anxiety, panic or depression, Jarvis said.

This is especially true for active duty military members who may be spending the holidays away from their family for the first time, she said. However, Jarvis and Hewitt agree acknowledging your feelings, rather than ignoring them, is the first step to taking control of one’s mental health.

when there is a change, it’s really unsettling,” Jarvis said. “It takes people being willing to acknowledge it, not minimize it.”

Both Hewitt and Jarvis emphasized local resources.

One of the newest — and more unique — is Man Therapy, Hewitt said.

A collaboration between Denver-based ad agency Cactus Inc., the Carson J. Spencer Foundation, and the Office of Suicide Prevention at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Man Therapy is an interactive mental health campaign targeting men 25 to 54 years old, according to www.mantherapy.org.

The website’s advice is packaged in typical “male” humor, Hewitt said, but the tips themselves are gender neutral: Document your feelings in a journal. Throw yourself into a household projects. The site even includes a link to the T-2 mood tracker, a mobile app that allows users to monitor and track their emotional health.

Jarvis recommended the Colorado Crisis Service Hotline for those needing immediate assistance. Callers can dial 1-844-493-8255, or text “TALK” to 38255, to be connected with a crisis counselor or trained professional.

Staffers will determine if an emergency response is necessary, but they also are there to simply lend an ear, Jarvis said.

“Maybe it’s 2 a.m., or maybe they aren’t too keen on talking to a friend,” she said. “It’s very real time and there for people if they are having a rough time and need to reach out.”

AspenPointe Mental Health also offers walk-in crisis services at two locations in Colorado Springs — 115 S. Parkside Drive and 6071 E. Woodmen Road, Jarvis said.

While people should absolutely utilize these resources during a crisis, finding constructive ways to cope on a day-to-day basis is critical to one’s well-being, Jarvis said.

“Don’t downplay it if you’re feeling significantly depressed,” she said. “If it gets to that point, please do use those services, but think about other kinds of self care.”

Examples include calling a friend, taking a bath, going for a walk or simply setting aside time for yourself each day, Jarvis said.

“Whether it’s watching ESPN or going for a hike, make sure to take time to do the things that make you happy,” El Paso County Public Health officials wrote. “Carving out a little time for yourself can recharge your battery and help you feel more energized.”

Diet and exercise are as essential to mental health as they are to physical health, Hewitt said. In their letter, county public health officials advised adding a few servings of healthy fruits and veggies each day in order to feel your best.

Rest is another key component, Jarvis said. A sleepdeprived person is more susceptible to unwanted emotions, particularly if they already are struggling with mental illness, she said.

“When you’re tired, you’re that much more vulnerable,” Jarvis said. “It’s amazing how much those things do help.”

For those who prefer a more structured approach, NAMI members offer a free 10-session educational program for adults with mental illness who are looking to better understand their condition, as well a 12-week course for those with family members with mental illness, Jarvis said.

The free Family-to-Family program will meet weekly for two and a half hours starting Jan. 24. Anyone interested can call 719-473-8477 or email info@namicoloradosprings.org for location information.

“We see a lot of people who start the year by doing NAMI’s program,” Jarvis said. “If you come away from the holidays thinking, ‘Oh my God, I need some coping skills,’ you should sign up.”

Get in shape before hitting the slopes, stay in shape during winter months

pending a day on the mountain with the family is a good alternative to staying inside and eating those leftover Christmas cookies.

Skiing and snowboarding are great ways to stay in shape and work off holiday dinners, desserts and drinks, but if unprepared, can lead to more than just a stomachache.

It is important to get in shape even before hitting the slopes, as being out of shape or unprepared can lead to injury.

Seth Cannello, fitness center director at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, said it’s a good idea to stay in shape throughout the year, as this decreases risk of injury while skiing or snowboarding.

“When you get tired you’re more likely to lose control,” he said. “If you crash, having a good core and being flexible are important to decrease the risk of serious injury.”

Cannello suggests cardio multiple times a week for at least 30 minutes a day, like running, cycling, swimming or using the elliptical, to increase heart strength and better prepare you for the increase in altitude and decrease in oxygen levels.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “a stronger heart doesn’t need to beat as fast. A stronger heart also pumps blood more efficiently, which improves blood flow to all parts of your body.

“Combined with a healthy diet, aerobic exercise helps you lose weight and keep it off.”

Once some of that winter weight has been shed, the mountains will be much more enjoyable.

Juli Yim, outdoor recreation director at Schriever AFB, said cross-country skiing in particular provides a significant upper body workout.

“In addition to getting people off the couch and working off all those holiday yummies, skiing or snowboarding can provide a significant increase

in aerobic capacity, in addition to increased leg muscle power and strength and increased balance, which can help decrease winter fall risks,” she said.

Additionally, aerobic endurance allows sustainable physical performance for longer periods of time, maximizing the body’s ability to take and distribute oxygen to muscles efficiently.

To sum it all up, aerobic exercise can be the difference between taking one run on the bunny hill, or taking on black diamonds until the last lift goes up.

Yim added exercise boosts endorphins.

“In conjunction with play (yes, adults can play too) and a social atmosphere, exercise can provide a positive influence on psychological health,” she said.

According to the Mayo Clinic, aerobic exercise may ease depression, reduce the tension associated with anxiety and promote relaxation. It can also improve your sleep.

With cold and flu season in full swing, Yim said exercise can also help boost your immune system, reducing the risk of getting sick and having to stay in the ski lodge.

Although skiing and snowboarding can be difficult at first, Yim said once you get over the initial falls, spending the day on the mountain with your friends and family can be a great way to celebrate the holiday season.

If you or your family members are unsure or uncomfortable skiing or snowboarding, most ski resorts in Colorado offer half or full day lessons, providing basic fundamentals of the sports.

Keystone Ski Resort offers ski and snowboarding lessons for ages 3-14 and 15 and up, for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders.

Additionally, the resort offers kid’s camps and private lessons.

“While some of us beginners find it a little stressful in the moment, skiing and exercise in general can be a great way to relax,” she said.

The Arena has also created a soccer niche, as it’s the only licensee of a TOCA trainer in southern Colorado. The TOCA is a machine that can be programmed to simulate specific passes.

“You can get 500 touches in 50 minutes, alone or with a coach,” Doug said.

The business also rents event space and would like to grow that aspect, he said, to include hosting wedding receptions and conferences.

have different ideas, different thought processes, we are certainly different ages,” Doug said. “Almost everybody who works here is under 30. ... It’s just a different thought process dealing with the under-30 group, whether it’s my family or not.”

And being open around family is easier said than done, according to Doug.

“Somebody might think they have this bomb idea, but the rest of us look at it and think it’s the dumbest idea we’ve heard all week,” he said. “It’s hard not to take that stuff personally.”

Doug said it’s also difficult drawing a line between business and family time.

“It’s hard not to take all this home and have a family dinner and not talk about business,” he said. “Being entrepreneurs is what we do — but it’s also who we are.”
