erving in the armed forces presents unique challenges and requires many sacrifices — not all of which will be faced by those who serve. Their families, too, face challenges and must make sacrifices, whether that means moving hundreds or thousands of miles every few years or managing day-to-day tasks while a loved one has been deployed. A lot of emotions come with a PCS or a deployment, and being able to identify, understand and manage those emotions makes things more bearable.

Those skills compose what psychologists call emotional intelligence.

Psychology today explains that emotionally intelligent people are aware of their emotions, positive or negative, including where those emotions come from, how they are affected by those emotions and how to manage those effects. University of New Hampshire psychology professor John D. Mayer, Ph.D., clarified in Psychology Today that emotional intelligence is independent of other personality traits; a person with high emotional intelligence may or may not be agreeable, motivated, optimistic or even happy. What they have is a tool kit to deal with their own emotions and understand others, and that tool kit translates directly to greater resilience.

The inverse is true also: A lack of emotional awareness can have serious unconscious consequences. Dr. Marc Brackett, founder and director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, did an experiment in which he and his colleagues split a group of middle school teachers into two groups, encouraged positive or negative emotional states, and had them all grade the same essay. The “bad mood” group gave poorer scores on those essays — a full letter grade, on average — and most of the teachers believed that they’d scored fairly, without regard for their own mood.

ing a strong foundation for the development of positive relationships,” wrote Monika Lohani, Marissa McCoy and Susan Rivers of the YCEI alongside Kevin Oden and James Cruchfield of the Lockheed Martin corporation in their academic paper Embedding emotional intelligence into military training contexts. “Being able to effectively build positive relationships in diverse settings is a key attribute of cross cultural competence that may be improved through EI training. By practicing emotion recognition/regulation strategies, individuals will begin to replace ineffective decision-making with productive responses to challenging situations.”

Tech Sgt. Erica Picariello knows this firsthand. She and her husband, Maj. Joseph Picariello, have four sons, all under 8 years old. She describes raising them as a “very delicate, choreographed dance” that requires not just her and her husband, but many friends — “it takes a village” indeed. Part of that dance includes teaching them to acknowledge and healthily express their emotions.

“They aren’t afraid to show their own emotions and aren’t scared of other’s emotions,” said Picariello. “It’s easier for them to help each other and engage when things aren’t just sunshine and rainbows.”

Helping the children of service members isn’t a matter of targeted emotional education, either. According to Dr. Shauna Tominey, assistant professor of practice and parenting education specialist at Oregon State University, kids may express challenging emotions in more everyday contexts during times of high stress.

In 2019, she wrote on PBS.org that military kids she worked with at a resilience workshop identified their “big emotions” occurring during everyday frustrations — interacting with siblings and peers, or doing homework.

As for how to encourage kids to develop emotional intelligence, Picariello says that she and her husband

Peak Education helps kids reach college

Peak Education aims to address issues surrounding education inequity.

n his 15 years traveling the country as an admissions officer to recruit students for Colorado College, Carlos Jiménez felt like he was fighting education inequality at the wrong end of the process. By the time he arrived to recruit high school students for college, those who were behind their peers were in a tough spot, and he couldn’t help them.

In 2020, Jiménez became the CEO of nonprofit Peak Education, which has addressed education inequity for more than 20 years in El Paso County.

The organization is community-based and serves more than 250 students in grades 7 through 12. By partnering with schools, Peak Education aims to give youths a leg-up when it comes to planning for their future. Jiménez says the Peak offers a way to address inequity before students even start the college admissions process.

“As an admission officer, you read lots and lots of applications as part of the job. And even in the application process, you see that it’s not only inequities and preparation in leading up to that point. It’s even an applicant’s ability to present themselves,” Jiménez says. “They don’t know how to speak

Jiménez says Peak Education is unique because it starts with kids in 7th grade and is particularly effective at changing students’ mindsets early on.

Then, in junior and senior year of high school, the organization provides intensive college scholarship and application counseling.

Ninety percent of Peak’s enrolled students qualify for free and reduced lunch, Jiménez says. The majority are students of color and would be the first to go to college in their family.

— Carlos Jiménez Peak Education is important to Colorado Springs because the city falls below the national average of youth going onto college after high school, Jiménez said. This means the city is drawing from other communities to fill jobs where college degrees are needed.

He sees college preparatory assistance — like the kind Peak offers — as “changing the trajectory of the community to be able to reach the rungs of the middle class [and] have economic impacts,” he said.

He hopes that Peak can “extend influence beyond just our scholars one day and start to change some of

Libraries offer online wintertime escapes

ith new COVID measures in effect and cold winter days making the great outdoors a far less palatable escape than it was during the spring restrictions, you’re probably wondering just how you’re going to get through the next few months without succumbing to total apathy. After all, there are only so many Netflix binges and Animal Crossing tasks you can complete each day. However, while it is safer to stay home, there is no need to consign your mind to the house as well.

With the days ahead uncertain, it just might be the perfect time for a digital renaissance, and you can launch yours at Pikes Peak Library District.

Accessibility lies at the heart of the public library mission, even during this increase in COVID-19 cases.

While browsing the district’s physical collections is offlimits right now, PPLD is offering curbside service to check out books or other media. When the pandemic began to accelerate, PPLD got to work creating a new way to translate the mission of accessibility in a socially distanced fashion by migrating their weekly classes and events to an online format.

While it’s common to associate the library strictly with books, PPLD has long offered unique, engaging classes in a variety of subjects. Have you always wanted to try your hand at wine-making? There’s a class for that, complete with supplies you can pick up curbside at any of the library’s participating locations. In keeping with their goal to keep the public safe, the class is held online and available to access at your convenience.

The most important service the library is offering at this time is probably its online learning and tutoring resources. As many El Paso County school districts make the decision to shift to distance learning through January of 2021, parents are struggling with where to turn when their elementary student presents an unfa-

miliar math concept or a particularly tricky grammar question. In response, PPLD has beefed up its online support tools considerably, which means that the next time you’re mystified by your kid’s “new math” you can tag in a library volunteer instead of attempting to relearn the whole of your elementary education.

All of these services can be accessed via the library website at ppld.org. If you don’t have a computer, the library is allowing folks to reserve a time to use one of theirs free of charge.

Military families find their rhythm at Mountain Song Community School

Veronica Slack, an Army wife and mother of three, fell in love with Mountain Song Community School the moment she walked through the door.

She loved the calming colors, the soft lights, the natural materials, and especially the community garden. She instantly felt Mountain Song was a place where childhood was protected and a love of learning was ignited.

It wasn’t long before all three Slack children were enrolled in the K-8th tuitionfree charter school nestled in a quiet neighborhood in Old Colorado City.

Through a developmentally-appropriate holistic curriculum, Mountain Song students develop a sense of wonder, interest, love, and enthusiasm for the world.

“That’s exactly what I wanted for my kids,” said Slack.

Like many military families, the Slacks learned about the Waldorf approach to education during a deployment to Germany, which boasts the largest number of Waldorf schools in the world.

“That’s just how it’s done in German schools,” said Slack. “We loved the way they celebrated festivals, how they introduced academics a little later, and how they emphasized slowing down and spending time together as a family.”

During the aftermath of World War I, Rudolf Steiner, the founder of the movement, saw “the need for imagination, a sense of truth, and a feeling of responsibility.”

Steiner opened his school in a factory in 1919 in Stuttgart, Germany with those three forces in mind.

Ever since, families seeking to foster a sense of wonder in their children have flocked to Waldorf schools around the world. Colorado families are no exception, especially military families living in the shadow of Pikes Peak.

“They bring such richness to our community,” said Dr. Teresa Woods, the principal of Mountain Song Community School.

“With military families’ unique experiences and travels, they bring such a diversity of thought. They also live and breathe our ideal of contributing positively to the world.”

The rhythm of the day at Mountain Song is organized to balance thinking, feeling, and doing. They offer an arts-integrated curriculum, where subjects are enlivened, made relevant, and given contextual meaning by incorporating music, singing, art, storytelling, drama, and movement.

Rather than learning from textbooks that other people write, students diligently create their own textbooks with the knowledge they gain throughout the year.

“We educate the whole child, the head, heart, and hands,” said Sarah Kreger, Mountain Song’s Director of School Performance.

The school fosters deep connections among classmates and their teachers, evident in the way the teachers “loop” with their students. Many students have the same teacher from 1st grade all the way through 5th grade.

Handwork is an important element in Waldorf education, and all Mountain Song students learn to sew, knit, and embroider. Steiner believed this helped children develop confidence as they embark on the journey that is life.

A hallmark of Mountain Song is its agricultural arts program, with a thriving school garden featuring 20 raised beds, chickens, rabbits, outdoor classroom spaces, a clay oven, and a geodesic greenhouse with an aquaponic system. Students learn not only how to grow and cook food, but also about the environmental, economic, social, scientific, and historical components of agriculture. The ultimate goal of the program is to provide students with the tools they need to have a resilient and sustainable future.

Mountain Song’s values extend beyond 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekdays, as families commit to reducing or even eliminating screen time so that their students’ innate creative and intellectual abilities will naturally unfold.

Our club list includes Art, Physical Education, Rubik’s Cube, and Yearbook. We also have five musical ensembles all taught after school, which include beginning band, jazz band, string orchestra, choir, and concert band. Included benefits to enrollment at MVHSA is access to organizations that further support our students’ interests.

Students can attend classes in the fine arts through the Colorado Springs Conservatory, learn about and engage in dramatic arts via our partnership with the Millibo Art Theatre, and work with professionals in the art of fencing.

To that end, Cameron works with schools and families to get kids interested in and educated about the outdoors early on.

While COVID has made it harder for Blackpackers to host its events, the organization is still committed to offering more camping trips, more educational opportunities, more hikes, and increasing their educational footprint. Cameron says a lot of people are interested in fishing and hunting, and she hopes to branch out into those areas soon.

More than anything, Cameron takes joy in teaching others what she has learned.

“I taught myself how to fish and I taught myself how to camp. I taught myself how to backpack, so I could teach my son. My favorite thing is showing people who have never camped before. They love it. You should see their faces in the morning when they realize they survived.

It’s like, ‘We made it!’ It’s an amazing feeling. I think the power people get from surviving overnight, out of their own power, is huge.”

The University of Denver’s Daniels College of Business offers eligible veterans unlimited funding

There is no doubt that the skills veterans gain in the Armed Forces are incredibly valuable. Yet, it is common for veterans to have some apprehension about the transition into a civilian career, specifically in a mid-to-upper-level role.

The University of Denver’s (DU) Daniels College of Business has given countless veterans a smooth shift into a rewarding career, not only in the corporate world, but in nonprofits, startups or other government positions.

Dennis Phillips (MBA 2016) admits that his journey from soldier to corporate leader was not without challenges, obstacles and surprises. Yet, the U.S. Air Force Major knew he wanted to expand his business and entrepreneurial mindset and was drawn to the Executive MBA (EMBA) program at the Daniels College of Business.

“The faculty, support staff, cohort and institutional values were a perfect complement to my own core values, and the program prepared me well for the private sector,” Phillips said.

Since 2017, Phillips has worked in the cybersecurity industry most recently with Ping Identity, headquartered in downtown Denver.

“It’s been great to draw upon both my military background and experience in conjunction with the skills and acumen honed in DU’s EMBA program.”

MBA graduates from Daniels need to understand all aspects of an enterprise and be able to manage across them, especially those pursuing executive-level roles. Scott McLagan, professor of the practices, has taught in the EMBA program for more than 15 years.

“In order to be successful, I tell students they have to speak three languages,” McLagan explains. “They need to be able to speak finance, understanding

revenue, growth, margins and return on capital. Their second language is strategy, where they know marketing, market segmentation, branding, how to allocate resources to achieve the best outcomes.

And, finally, they must speak leadership, so they can set a direction and get people aligned, committed and engaged to pursue the vision.”

These three languages are taught in the four MBA programs Daniels offers, and students express their comfort using them after graduation.

Since Phillips graduated, the Daniels College of Business has increased its commitment to veterans. Every eligible veteran who is accepted to a Daniels College of Business graduate program is offered unlimited Yellow Ribbon funding. Universities that participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program make additional funds available for veterans attending an out-of-state or private university.

“We value veterans in our student community,” said Sam Nesper, director of Graduate Admissions for Daniels.

“Veterans pour their leadership, work ethic and diverse, global experiences into the classroom, making them top contributors. In turn, we pride ourselves on providing experiences and resources to help them grow within the military or transition into a civilian career.”

Adam Cholewin worked in medical device sales before joining the U.S. Army. He served in the Green Berets and in Special Forces. Following his service to the army, he returned to his roots in the medical field as vice president of sales at AlloSource, but knew he’d want to take advantage of his GI bill and get a master’s degree. While his company would contribute to his graduate degree, the Yellow Ribbon program leveled the playing field.

“That made it completely on par with any other program I was looking at, from a financial standpoint,” Cholewin said.

“It enabled me to focus on quality of education and Daniels immediately set itself apart.”

The Daniels College of Business offers four MBA programs for part-time or full-time learners, online or on campus. One of the MBAs, our Executive MBA, is designed for those with 10+ years of experience, making it a favorite among military and veteran candidates.

“Often, we hear that veterans are reluctant to consider an Executive MBA program because they assume that their work and management experience needs to fall into a corporate, or civilian capacity,” said Lisa Grassfield, executive director of Enrollment and Student Engagement for the Executive and Professional MBA Programs. “Believe me, the leadership experience our military servicemen and women have gotten

in the field makes them great candidates for an EMBA program.”

Cholewin agrees, explaining that the skills that are exhibited by military personnel on a daily basis directly translate to those needed and sought after in the civilian world. Cholewin expects to graduate in the summer of 2021, yet he can already see his EMBA experience adding value.

“Even though I already had strong communication skills with others from the military, the EMBA has really paid dividends to utilize some of the skills I learned during the leadership portion of the program,” he said. “I also manage the marketing arm for two of our key growth products and I’ve been able to build relationships with key stakeholders on that side of the organization.”

All programs at Daniels combine the study of business fundamentals with hands-on experience via simulations, practicum projects and interaction with local, regional and global business leaders. Plus, students will experience personalized attention, small cohorts of other students and access to an alumni network that’s 37,000 strong and growing. Painted Paws matches veterans with canines to give purpose in life

hen Tyler Warrick came home from serving in the Iraq war, he suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome.

“My little dog, Moose, gave me a purpose to get up every day and deal with life,” he says.

That was the genesis of Painted Paws for Veterans, a nonprofit operating in Peyton that rescues dogs from across the United States, as well as locally, and helps train them to serve as companions to war veterans.

In October, the compound sheltered 74 dogs and a few cats as

Educating Children of Color dismantles biases

s a young female judge in the 1990s, Regina Walter believed she treated all the young people who came into her courtroom equally, regardless of ethnicity or gender. Then she went to a conference on disproportionate minority confinement and by the third day she was horrified by the internal biases that had caused her to look at young Black men as drug dealers worthy of prison and young white men as addicts worthy of treatment.

“I had already been on the bench for eight years so who knows how much damage I had done in that period of time,” Walter, the CEO of Educating Children of Color, said. After returning from the conference, she started a judicial task force to address the disproportionate incarceration of youth of color in El Paso County. After a decade, the group decided to focus on education because educational challenges were the one thing that every child coming through the justice system had in common.

is an accredited coeducational private Christian school for children ages two years old through 12th grade. PPCS was founded in 1981 to serve the Colorado Springs area and our mission is to provide a quality, Bible-based education taught by Christian teachers in a safe and compassionate environment.

Preschool classes are available for students two to five years old. Classes are held two, three, and five days a week. All levels meet in the morning from 8:30 to 11:30am and include Chapel, Computer, Physical Education, Spanish, Music and Library enrichment classes.

The full day Kindergarten program is an academic, child-centered program that focuses on intellectual, social, creative, and physical development. The curriculum includes phonics, reading, language development, math, science, social studies, Spanish, Bible, art, music, computer, library skills, and physical education.

The elementary school curriculum includes Phonics, Art, computer, music, daily Chapel, band (for 5th grade), Spanish, Bible, Accelerated Reading, and physical education. 1st - 5th graders are also invited to participate in Landsharks (Track & Cross Country) and 5th graders can play basketball and volleyball.

The middle school curriculum consists of English, math, social studies, science, computer science, foreign language, novels/Accelerated Reading, life skills, critical thinking, and Bible. Daily chapel is also a part of each student’s middle school experience. Students may choose from a variety of elective classes including art, drama, and band and participate in several sports and extracurricular activities that include football, basketball, and volleyball.

High School core classes include science, math, English, social studies, and Bible.

The student’s schedule may also include physical education, health, speech, and foreign language. In addition to core classes, electives such as drama, art, band, journalism, and computers will complete the student’s daily schedule. Honors courses and Advanced Placement (AP) courses are offered to qualifying students. Along with Bible, daily chapel is part of each student’s spiritual experience. Students may also choose from a variety of varsity and junior varsity after-school sports programs including cross country, track, basketball, volleyball, football, baseball, and cheerleading.

The Paul M. Rady School of Computer Science & Engineering represents an innovative partnership between Western and CU Boulder’s College of Engineering & Applied Science. Together, we’re helping to build the state’s technically skilled workforce of engineers.

Students in the partnership programs can choose to study Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science. Admitted as Western students, they transfer to University of Colorado Boulder after their second year to complete their degree as Buffs—however they remain on Western’s campus for all four years. This means students enjoy Western’s personal attention, small class sizes, spectacular surroundings and adventurous community for their entire college career.

As an added bonus, Western offers the Rady Merit Scholarship, a two-year, full tuition scholarship for all first-time freshmen who are accepted by Jan. 31, 2021, declare a partnership program major; have a GPA of 3.5+, and are eligible for Math 151 – Calculus 1.

Accelerated Degree Programs

Western also offers a multitude of accelerated degree programs, allowing students to earn their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in just five years—saving them time and money. Pursuing this path also gets students out into the workforce earning a paycheck and contributing to society sooner than if they had pursued a standard path.

Each of our accelerated degree programs function a bit differently, but in general students spend their first three years taking undergraduate courses and the last two taking graduate courses. After the fourth year, students earn their bachelor’s; after the fifth year, students earn their master’s.

Beyond the Classroom

In addition to gaining a personalized education, students at Western are free to push past their comfort zones. Western is a great place to take hobbies to the next level or to break into an entirely new type of activity.

Wilderness Pursuits, the on-campus gear and guide shop, offers rental equipment, various outdoor-focused courses and a full ski, board and bike tune shop.

Plus, there are more than 50 student-run clubs and organizations. These range from the academically focused, like the biology honor society TriBeta, to conservation focused, like the Gunnison Sockeyes, a flyfishing club.

Students can also explore the Multicultural Center, located at the heart of campus, which houses five clubs: Amigos, Asian Pacific Islanders Club, Black Student Alliance, Native American Student Council and Polynesian Chant & Dance Club. The Multicultural Center celebrates the diversity of people in and around the Gunnison community and helps students develop culturally, personally and academically. It is a place where members—regardless of age, ethnicity or gender—feel welcomed and encouraged to participate.

Academic & Social Support

Making the transition to college can be a confusing one. That’s why we pair every incoming student with an Experienced Peer Initiating Connections (EPIC) Mentor to guide them through summer and their first year at Western.

EPIC Mentors are upperclassmen who empower new students with the resources they need to connect with campus and the Gunnison community. Once new students are off and running, their EPIC Mentor will be there to answer any questions.

As a public institution with its roots in teacher education, Chadron State takes pride in its accessibility and affordability. Chadron State and its curriculum has grown to offer programs and courses in 49 majors and endorsements and eight master’s degree programs.

New, lower tuition

CSC lowered the undergraduate online flat rate for the 2020-21 academic year to $299 per credit hour. The tuition rate is open to students from all states and does not have any additional fees.

The online tuition rate has been lowered to $359 per credit hour for graduate-level courses for PK-12 educators during 2020-21.

The college is a major provider of online courses and degrees. Various agencies regularly rank CSC among the best institutions for an affordable online education.

Fully online graduate degree offerings include Master of Business Administration, Master of Organizational Management, Master of Arts in Education and Master of Education. A: A business degree empowers the graduate to do absolutely anything.

Undeniably, one overarching product of a college degree is an ability to think critically. A business graduate understands the economics of disruptive innovation and will willingly retool. In a way, business and economics is like a philosophy; it’s not about having the right answers, but having the right questions.

Q: Are CSC courses applicable to most or all types of businesses?

A: The value of CSC’s business courses come largely from our commitment to our specialized accreditation standards. These standards require continual program level assessment of courses, faculty credentialing standards, proof of faculty continuous improvement, and relevancy of curriculum development.
