In their book, Art & Fear, authors David Bayles and Ted Orland tell a story of a ceramics instructor who divided a class into two groups: One group was graded on how

much they created in a designated amount of time, while the other group would be graded on the quality of a single work they made in the same time. In the end, it was the quantity group that produced the most works of quality. Turns out, this quantity group learned

from their mistakes while the quality group was paralyzed by the burden of perfectionism.

We spoke with the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College, Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum and the Colorado Springs Conservatory to learn more about their offerings for youths and families to close out summer.

Some current exhibits include Papel Chicano Dos — an exhibition through Aug. 7 that showcases works collected

by Chicano comedian, Cheech Marin of Cheech & Chong and Nash Bridges fame. To Bind or Burn is a show running through Aug. 21, featuring the recent work by the FAC’s 2019-20 Andrew W. Mellon artist in residence, Anna Tsouhlarakis. Tsouhlarakis — who identifies as Navajo, Creek and Greek — presents work that connects Native American art and Minimalism. Through Sept. 4, works from 20th-century blackand-white landscape photographer Ansel Adams will be on display.

through a pandemic, we’re definitely dealing with the community more oneon-one, on their terms,” said Jeremiah Houck, assistant director of the center’s Bemis School of Art. “Recently, a couple

friends scheduled a drawing class with one of our instructors — it was supposed to be a 30-minute lesson that turned into a 90-minute session with a ton of laughter. This reconnecting in person

Two of the most common questions asked while serving in the military are, “what are you going to do when you get out?” and “what do you want to be when you grow up?” For some, these questions come sooner than later. Whether you do one term in the military or complete a full career, the next step is always on your mind.

Employment after the Military

For most service members, when they leave the military, they will enter the civilian workforce. Most service members leave military service with valuable skills in leadership, management, and even technical trade.

But, in many circumstances, while the service member was off serving their country, their civilian counterparts were going to school or gaining valuable experience in their particular fields of work and study. So, how do veterans make themselves more competitive in the workforce? Simple, higher education!

These degrees show valuable critical thinking skills. The combination allows employers to recognize if a particular candidate has equivalent expertise compared to other candidates when coupled with your military experience. Your degree can help set you apart from the rest of the hiring pool.

When to Start

The simple answer is NOW. Each branch of the military has a voluntary education program. This program provides tuition assistance funds to help service members complete their higher education degrees. You can use these funds to pay up to 100% of your tuition costs for classes. Each branch of the military has different requirements and administers the program in its own way, but the bottom line here is that there are funds available to complete your degree. In many cases, you can get multiple degrees. For example, in the Air Force and the Army, you can use tuition assistance to complete an Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree.

What to Look for

When searching for universities, it is important to know which schools qualify for the use of your tuition assistance funds. First, the university must be either regionally or nationally accredited.

Universities with these credentials have undergone a rigorous certification process to ensure that they meet only the highest academic standards and policies. Next, look for a university that offers flexible classes and takes your military time commitments, your family, and your personal life into consideration. Investigate if the university provides a discounted tuition rate to maximize your tuition assistance funds. Ensure the university will transfer your military experience. For the Air Force, this experi-

ence is annotated on your Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Transcript.

For all the other branches, it is located on your Joint Services Transcript (JST). Look for any special agreements the university has with your branch of service. This next one may be a given, but find out if the university accepts tuition assistance funds. To receive these funds, the university must have signed the Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding and meet specific guidelines set forth by the DoD. Another item to consider is whether or not the university has staff solely dedicated to helping out the military community. Last and most importantly, see if the university offers the degree program you are looking to pursue.

Is it too late?

It is never too late to start your higher education journey. If you are still on active duty, visit your education office. They can assist you in the first steps of planning your education.

Your branch of service has allotted funds for your education. Use them!

What if I am no longer serving?

No problem here. Have you used your Veteran’s Affairs (VA) benefits?

Do you know what benefits you qualify for? The best way to find out is to contact the VA to understand what you are eligible for and how to request those benefits.

Once you find out which benefits you have, it is time for you to start looking for the university that fits you the best. Just like current service members, make sure the university has the degree you are looking for. It is beneficial to enroll at a university with a dedicated staff to help you through the entire admissions process and guide you through degree completion. Look for universities that are part of the Yellow Ribbon program. The VA has several tools available on its website to help you identify a university that will meet your needs.

How about my family?

For family members of our current service members, look for universities that offer special discount rates for spouses and dependents. With the passage of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, Veterans and active duty service members have the opportunity to pass this benefit on to their spouses or children. Additionally, there are several other avenues through the VA where family members can access funds for education. There are specific guidelines to follow. Visit your education office or the VA, and they will be able to assist you.

Library resources aren’t limited to what’s on site

Kids are full of many things, but nothing more so than questions. Every day, parents deal with more whos, whats, whens, wheres and whys than professors and politicians combined. While “because you’re my kid” goes a long way, many such questions require research, and Google’s full of information that might be wrong or totally irrelevant. And when kids get older, it’s hard enough to get them to do homework before some corner of the Internet has convinced them that the Earth is flat.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to ask for help finding good sources of information when they’re needed, and the best place to start is — as it has been for decades — at the library.

“Library staff are trained to be aware of sources of information and to evaluate the legitimacy of a source,” said Jenny Pierce, director of collection management for Pikes Peak Library District.

Talking once more about accessibility, the Colorado Talking Book Library in Denver collects audio books, large print books and books in Braille for those who cannot use standard print. Their collection is available to PPLD in-district card holders through both ILL and CLC, so such card holders can request specific items or make the trip and enjoy the welcoming experience of browsing an accessible collection. Sometimes, though, there’s nothing like going and doing — and for that, PPLD in-district card holders can use the Pikes Peak Culture Pass program.

Patrons at least 12 years old can go to ppld.org/culturepass and reserve a free admission pass to one of six local museums and educational sites, up to 30 days ahead of time. Each pass allows for a limited number of people, which varies by location, and patrons can’t reserve a pass for a given institution more than once every six months.

Those interested in local culture and history might consider the seasonal Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site. This outdoor museum’s summer living history program immerses patrons in the everyday activities of those who lived near Pikes Peak in various eras between the late 18th century and very beginning of the 20th century. Those interested in the myth of the American West and culture in the Pikes Peak region can get a pass to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy. From the days when farm and ranch workers came together to turn their chores into competitions to modern professional rodeos, this place has all manner of exhibits, collections and sculptures. The Western Museum of Mining and Industry, which also participates, teaches visitors about the work that was done to pull gold, silver, coal and more from the earth, as well as the tools that workers used to do it and the way mining shaped and enriched the Pikes Peak region. Also check out The Money Museum for a dive into the art, history and science of money.

Typically, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College participates in the Culture Pass program, but due to COVID-19 precautions, the museum is open only by reservation and is not currently available to visit with a Culture Pass.

PPLD does so many different things that it’s hard for anyone to keep track of it all — even the Colorado Springs Military Newspaper Group’s current and past reporting on what the PPLD offers gives only a glimpse at what library card holders have access to. Just get a library card already — there’s almost no greater tool to have on hand for when kids ask questions. And they never, ever stop asking questions.

Harrison School District Two Now Offering FREE Before and After School Care As students across the state return to classrooms this fall, Harrison School District Two (HSD2) is welcoming them with a FREE Before and After School program.

Beginning on August 10, 2021, all HSD2 Kindergarten through 5th grade students in noncharter schools will have the opportunity to engage in fun and exciting programming before and after school on every regularly scheduled school day at absolutely no charge to families. For the past six months, HSD2 staff and Out-of-School Time program experts from the YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region, Early Connections Learning Centers, and the City of Colorado Springs have collaborated to create and implement a plan that will be sure to meet the needs of families from throughout the region.

A continual theme in Dr. Birhanzel’s work as superintendent of HSD2 has been developing a vision to provide support services for the students in Harrison School District Two. In June 2021, Dr. Birhanzel presented the District’s three-year strategic plan, The Journey Forward. The new plan includes providing opportunities to serve families and help remove barriers, such as a lack of affordable, convenient, and quality childcare, impacting families trying to obtain and sustain employment.

In the spring of 2021, Harrison School District Two’s Research, Data, and Accountability (RDA) Department conducted a needs assessment to determine the estimated supply and demand for childcare among HSD2 families, identifying gaps in available, affordable before and after school services.

Parents desired a program that incorporates a bal-

ance of movement/physical activities, quiet-time activities, and homework help.

The District considered several options, from partnering with public agencies, private childcare, extending the hours of current HSD2 staff to expanding the existing partnership with three Outof-School Time service providers.

The quality of the service and consistent programming already provided by these Out-of-School Time partners made it an easy choice to expand their services to meet the additional needs of Harrison School District Two families. These providers have supported HSD2 on a smaller scale for many years.

The Early Connections Learning Center has provided parent-funded after-school care at Sand Creek International School for nearly two decades. The YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region is a solid national leader in Out-of-School Time programming and has provided care at several schools within the District.

The City of Colorado Springs has offered afterschool programs to students at both Deerfield Hills Community Center and Meadows Park Community Center, with funding offset by the City for years.

The partners and District staff collaborated to determine the scope of the program and define an implementation timeline to: increase the current availability of childcare, eliminate the cost to families, provide a nutritious breakfast and healthy snack to all participants, and satisfy the expectations for a quality program offering a balance of activity, homework help, and quiet time.

The before school program will begin at 7:00 am at all locations except Soaring Eagles Elementary, opening at 6:30 am. The after-school program will

begin at dismissal and end at 6:00 pm at all locations. Students will receive breakfast in the morning and a healthy snack in the afternoon.

The program will utilize existing spaces within each school site, except Stratton Meadows, which will occur at Meadows Park Community Center.

The Before and After School programming sites are: YMCA of the Pikes Peak Region: Bricker Elementary, Monterey Elementary, Mountain Vista Community School, Oak Creek Elementary, Pikes Peak Elementary, Soaring Eagles Elementary, and Wildflower Elementary.

The City of Colorado Springs: Centennial Elementary, Giberson Elementary, Otero Elementary, Stratmoor Hills Elementary, Stratton Meadows Elementary, and Turman Elementary.

Registration is now open.

HSD2 will also offer free adult education and English as a Second Language classes this fall. The hours of the adult learning classes coincide with the Before and After School care program, so families who are interested in taking the adult learning classes will have a free childcare option while they attend class.

In addition to the free care on regularly scheduled school days, the care providers will offer camp-type care on staff workdays, and extended breaks (such as October and February break and Spring Break) at a nominal fee to families.

The right gear choices help get you outdoors

Let’s face it — whether you’re new to living in the mountains or you’ve been here your entire life, venturing out for an overnight backpacking trip for the first time can be intimidating. My name is Jenn Cancellier and I’m director of event operations at the Indy and founder of the guiding company, Focus Backcountry.

I’m here to provide a little insight on how to get started in backpacking.

I grew up in Peoria, Illinois, and moved to Colorado in 2007. I had very little experience backpacking prior to my move and through the years I’ve gained some knowledge as to what gets people outdoors or — more to the point — what keeps them indoors.

Staying indoors usually boils down to three things: lack of access to gear; lack of trail knowledge; or lack of physical fitness. But nature is for everyone. Follow these tips and you’ll find yourself outdoors in no time.

Well, we all know that is a big fat lie. Gear is expensive!

Mountain Equipment Recyclers and Gearonimo are great local shops that sell used gear at a hell of a cheaper rate than most retailers. As for hiking boots, you may want to wait on this purchase unless you are 100 percent committed to making backpacking and hiking a long-term hobby. If you have a good pair of trail shoes or tennis shoes, bring them and save up for other essential items.

Get knowledge Where to begin? Fi rst, invite a partner who has some backpacking experience, if possible. Having someone with backcountry expertise can really enhance your experience. Second, research the trails and surrounding sites before your adventure. I recommend newcomers hike in places they’re familiar with before taking an overnight trip to a new location. If you don’t know the trail, spend some time day hiking before jumping into an overnight backpacking trip. This way you’ll get more comfortable with waypoints and surroundings. I spent a lot of time in the Sangre de Cristos range. When I’m on those trails, I am familiar with the area and its relation to civilization. Also, I study trail maps over and over again before going on a trip; I want to be as familiar with the space as possible before heading to the trailhead.

Get fit Backpacking takes a lot of effort, both mentally and physically. Always consult with your doctor to make sure you are cleared to take on an epic backpacking adventure. Once the doctor says you’re OK to hit the trails, set a date for your first trip and begin planning your journey. Backpacking season is normally between June and August. Give yourself anywhere from four to six weeks to prepare yourself physically for more strenuous trips. Day hikes should become a part of your weekly routine. As you become more and more comfortable, start carrying your pack. Add snacks, water and maybe an extra jacket so you get comfortable carrying weight. There are also some really great home workouts on YouTube and Pinterest that can be done with a pack.

Last words of advice: Take your time!

Start with shorter trips with minimal elevation changes. I am a sucker for secluded alpine lakes.

And do your research. The more you prepare before hitting the trails, the more confident you will be on your first backpacking journey.

Exchange programs share cultures near and far

When it comes to education, it’s not hard to argue that focused, mentored study in specific disciplines produces results for students seeking knowledge, understanding and achievement. But what if there was a way to learn about life and the world in a different way — one that textbooks and classroom lectures could never reveal?

Students who have studied abroad are familiar with this type of learning, and though some may return home with scant details of their actual schoolwork, most remain forever enlightened through their exchange experiences.

Johanna Wolfe, local coordinator for Foreign Links Around the World (FLAG), one of many international student exchange agencies that operate around the country, spent the 1986 school year living in Oslo, Norway, with a typical Norwegian family. The experience, she says, was life-changing.

For us, it’s so cool to get to know a young person who is driven enough to travel internationally and live with a family they’ve never really met before. All of our experiences have been really positive and we still keep in contact with our exchange students to this day.”

Pick produce and take in the farming life

Looking at the timeline of humans on a long enough scale, it’s clear that without farming there is no society as we know it. The development of farming changed our ancestors’ behavior and priorities on a fundamental level, and without those changes, most of the things we consider part of society could not exist. Even now, much of what people use on a day-to-day basis comes from farms — factory farms that bear little resemblance to bucolic Old MacDonald, but farms nonetheless — thanks to the mind-bending number of things that can be made from corn. Doctor Moreau-esque agri-business corn genetics shenanigans aside, summer makes a great time to reconnect with the foundations of food and the farms that grow it.

One of the most hands-on ways to do this is to visit one of the many area farms that allow folks to pick their own produce — a great way to reconnect with the labor that is fundamental to the relatively easy American lifestyle people often take for granted. It’s also fabulous for learning more about what ripe fruit and veggies look like, as well as to get some excellent local produce. Those who live in Colorado Springs will have to do some driving, so check a map and weather forecast, and plan accordingly. Farms that don’t have any kind of pick-your-own produce setup may offer farm tours, dinners and more. Below, we’ve listed a few ways to connect with farms and farm products for good eating, which also make for great ways to enjoy a beautiful summer.

High Altitude Rhubarb 7275 Wildridge Road, Black Forest, 719-494-8424, highaltituderhubarb.com Black Forest’s own, this farm specializes in rhubarb, which is high in vitamin K, vitamin C, calcium and manganese, and is hardy enough to grow well in Colorado’s climate. Most often, Americans use rhubarb in desserts, mellowing its tart flavor and astringency with sugar, which makes it great in pies, tarts, crumbles and more, though it’s also often eaten dried. Most of the rhubarb grown on this farm, owned by the Duncan family, is organic, but they note that issues in 2020 demanded some herbicide use, so some of the 2021 crop will be identified as non-organic. Check online for up-to-date information.

Tart cherries become pickable in late June, and now black raspberries, basil, pickling cucumbers and flowers are ready for eager hands to snatch up and take home. Tim and Claudia Ferrell’s farm, open since 1991, allows visitors to pick some of their certified organic produce between June and September, with other produce available for sale in their barn store, which is open year-round. They also hold a variety of events over the course of the summer and autumn, with most of the exact dates decided by how the plants themselves are growing and announced

on the Ferrells’ webpage.

Hanagan Farms 25388 County Road 24.5, La Junta, 719-384-5067, hanaganfarms.com Since 1905, the Hanagan family has grown tomatoes, chiles, melons, squash and just about whatever else they can in northern Otero County. According to Chuck Hanagan, the picking usually opens in early August, lasting through the first frost, with pumpkins and a corn maze that remains open even after that.

The family lists what’s about to be ready for harvest on Facebook, usually with a few days’ warning. They will also roast their tomatoes and chiles on-site.

“Our motto is ‘I wouldn’t sell you anything I wouldn’t feed to my own children,’” says Hanagan. “We can always tell you when it was planted, who planted it, how long it’s been grown, when it was picked, [and] who picked it.”

For those not interested in driving to the Hanagan family farm — around a hundred miles from central Colorado Springs — Hanagan sells produce at the Bancroft Park Farmers Market every Saturday. Their Community Supported Agriculture 12-week program, which lets members choose their produce, had around 25 Springs residents buy in for the 2020 season, and Hanagan estimates more than triple that in 2021.

Happy Apple Farm, owned by Tony Ferrara, has no admission fee and offers free hayrides. In addition to apples, they offer fresh cider, honey, pumpkins and a country store full of baked goods, with barbecue on the weekends. Jenkins Farms

has expanded to include Western Skies Winery, which produces a variety of wines — most notably apple wines, but they have a few traditional grape wines as well — and includes a tasting room with hours every Saturday. As for Third Street Apples, the owners have joked about changing their name to Third Street Pumpkins for the size of this year’s pumpkin crop, so while they’re reassessing what the harvest season will look like, they’ll have something to sell for sure.

Check each farm’s website for updates, with opening dates most likely announced in mid-August. With the popularity of these farms, it’s smart to call ahead to ask what’s ready to pick, as the harvest draws pickers from across the state and it’s not unheard of for fresh apples to get snapped up quickly.

Meat, eggs and honey can be ordered online for pickup at the farm. Of course, the father-and-son team of Jay and Sam Frost, plus master gardener Karen Witten, don’t just do retail — foodies may know Frost Farm from its partnership with event coordinators A Grazing Life, through which they organize seasonal one-off brunches and dinners made with their meats and produce. Some of these dinners feature respected local chefs, like Brent Beavers of Immerse Cuisine and BFD, Mark Soto of Slow Downz Texas Creole, and the Ephemera Dinners team of Ian Dedrickson, Adam Ridens and Jasmine Dillavou, just to name a few.

Today, the family of seven (plus employees) has grown into a full-on carbonnegative farm and plant nursery, offering a variety of heirloom produce and fresh eggs. They also host classes, teaching about growing microgreens, pickling and other fermentations, composting and blacksmithing, as well as a monthly storytime for kids and monthly farm tours. Home gardeners can purchase a variety of seedlings come November. But perhaps the most striking thing: The Camire family offers produce at pay-what-you-can-afford prices, sans any subsidies or nonprofit status, with a stated goal of making healthy food available to those who can’t normally afford it.

Owned by Amanda Miller and her mother, Terri, Green Mountain Ranch has been in their family for six generations and, predominantly, run by women. While the ranch’s beef tends to get bought up quickly, the horses and the land itself are worth visiting in and of themselves. The Millers raise two endangered species of horses: English shires, massive medieval draft horses that stand 6 feet high at the shoulder; and Peruvian Pasos, one of many species descended from now-extinct European “gaited” horses and known for the smoothness of their stride. Visitors can enjoy tours, presentations about the horses and the history of the area, and occasional carriage rides.

The ranch also operates as Little Scraggy Camp for by-reservation camping.

In the end, our family was pleasantly surprised that our children’s classes stayed in session all year! This was due to the diligence of the St. Peter Catholic School staff, parents, and students working together to keep cases down in our school building. As the year progressed, anxieties lessened and we were happy to witness our children having a very normal school year. We are so grateful for how St. Peter handled the COVID-19 challenges, which allowed our children to learn and thrive in a midst of a pandemic.” Lt. Col.
