Pop-Up Shops Three more ways to shop locally for the holidays

The Downtown Partnership has launched its Holiday Pop-Up Shop program for the fift h year running, placing retail concepts in empty storefronts for two months, subsidizing their rent and giving them the chance to grow into something that will hopefully last. This year, downtown shoppers will find new options for interior decor, furniture, fashion and more.

And that means she’s familiar with the choice between paying to ship furniture or selling and buying new.

“I wanted to be able to offer a product that actually was really stylish and affordable price that military people may only have for a couple years before they have to move on to the next [duty station],” she said.

It’s an escape from endless Ikea trips and, bonus, there’s no assembly required.

Williams has worked as a furniture sales rep for around a year now — she managed a corporate car rental location for ten years before — but her father, Don Svenby, has been in furniture for 45 years.

Svenby has worked for companies like La-Z-Boy and Weberg Furniture, working as a seller and as a buyer.

“I started [Fair Finds] online in the beginning of the summer,” Williams said. “And it was kind of slow going, so I decided to try this holiday pop up program to see if the retail space is necessary… . It’s basically a trial run on whether or not I’m going to continue to have a retail space or just focus on online sales.”

Hailey Sardi has wanted to run a women’s clothing store since high school, according to Local Honey’s other co-owner, Cara McQueeney. But things only coalesced to allow them to pursue Sardi’s dream in February of 2019. But when things pick up, they don’t slow down, and after opening as an online retailer in September, the two are trying their hand at selling in a brick-and-mortar situation, focusing on a mid-20s to mid-30s demographic.

They’ve hoped to open a storefront since they started planning, but that’s a means to their primary goal.

“Our mission is to encourage and empower women and the community, and we see that there’s a way to do that through clothing and fashion and welcoming women to a space like ours that is approachable,” said McQueeney.

‘Tis the season to start crossing items off those holiday gift wishlists. It’s not just a time to get cozy around the fireplace or bundle up and watch television all week.

This is Colorado, and people love the outdoors year-round — and local retailers understand that.

No matter your jam, local shops have their customers covered with a myriad items to keep family, friends and loved ones happy as this season for giving approaches.

Runners Roost

The Ski Shop isn’t limited to skis alone.

Running shoes? In the winter? It probably sounds like a unusual purchase, but the folks at Runners Roost are equipped to fulfill the needs of more than just runners.

And they do so in style.

The store has an assortment of socks and gloves to pair with fashionable hiking boots for those frigid months.

“We have hiking boots that we’ve never had before and they are waterproof,” Orlando Dimas, sales associate at Runners Roost, said. “They do not look like your typical hiking boots that you’d normally get from your mountain-type stores. These are more fashionable and can still be used for active wear. If you needed jog for any reason, that boot is going to take care of that.

“We have a boot made by On Cloud and they’re reflective, which is going to be great during the season as people are walking out there in the dark,” he said. “These also keep your feet dry.”

Building Community One

Dimas said the Roost understands that runners aren’t the only ones taking advantage of the outdoors during the winter, which is why they have a catalog that suits a variety of customers.

Don’t forget reflective socks and gloves, which will help keep you safe during the season’s early dusks. Runners Roost is also there to accommodate anyone needing to replace items.

“A lot of travelers and a lot of people coming in for the holidays forget things,” Dimas said. “We’re here to provide any service that we possibly can to help them make sure they’re safe during the winter months. Gentges said it’s a vital aspect of their business model.

“It’s the whole reason we exist,” Gentges said. “We like to provide high-quality gear at a discount price. Volunteer opportunities abound this holiday season

As we transition into the holiday season, thoughts often turn to memories of past special meals, events and celebrations, gatherings with family and friends, and other anticipated yearly traditions. It’s also the time of year when people often gain motivation for helping those in need.

While the veteran volunteer may find opportunities easily during the holiday season, especially if they have connections with community helping agencies already, newbies may find it difficult to find the right environment or type of work that suits them best.

Joey Bautista, Fort Carson Volunteer Services manager, explained that potential holiday-time volunteers can make the process of finding the right opportunity easier by contacting a resource agency.

Bautista said ACS would likely put Bishop to work in the organization’s marketing and publications department, where his skills would be most useful.

But that’s another aspect that potential volunteers should think about before jumping in, especially if they are looking for holidayseason opportunities, exclusively.

“Typically, this time of year, people should be flexible with the type of work they’re willing to perform,” Bautista said. “For example, my kids and I volunteer at the Marian House Soup Kitchen and the managers there typically put me to work washing dishes. And I’m fine with that because I want my kids to be able to interact with the folks in the dining hall. A lot helping agencies will put volunteers to work where they need the help.

It just makes sense.”

Potential volunteers should also be prepared to attend an organization’s volunteer orientation, where they learn various aspects of the volunteer experience specific to that agency. Some may also assist children and require their volunteers to pass a background check.

“It’s a good idea for people to contact helping agencies a few weeks prior to when they want to volunteer so they can perform all of the administrative tasks required,” Bautista said. “Attending a volunteer orientation is also a great way to learn about the mission and philosophy of the organization you’re volunteering for.”

Learning about an organization and taking an honest assessment of yourself are two of the most important steps that potential volunteers should take, according to Day. “When we first meet people who want to volunteer, they’ll typically say they either don’t know what to do or that they’ll do anything,” she said. “But when you start talking with them, you find out that’s not true. It’s when we get deeper into that initial conversation, that things start coming to their minds. And, they end up walking out with

Even people who struggle with inflexible work schedules or can only serve their community in a one-time stint have ample opportunities to do so.

For example, 1st Lt. Alan Martinez, a military police officer with 110th MP Company, and his unit mates organized a toy drive during last year’s holiday season. The MPs collected toys during their unit’s holiday party and delivered them to the Court Appointed

Special Advocates office later the same week.

“Our demanding schedule didn’t allow us to make a longer commitment, but we wanted to volunteer or help community members as much as we could,” Martinez said. “Our holiday party theme was ‘giving back to the community.’”

Martinez had a contact at CASA and said their representative communicated with him throughout the entire process.

“The CASA rep even came to our unit to speak with soldiers about volunteer op-

portunities,” he said. “The partnership and coordination turned out to be relatively easy.”

The relationship between a business and its customers in a capitalist society has traditionally been a pretty simple one: a business provides a product in exchange for a customer’s money.

But a sweeping movement is redefining that model for both businesses and nonprofits and is becoming increasingly prevalent in Colorado Springs — one in which organizations don’t just provide goods and/or services, but use their businesses to serve their communities in the interest of the public good.

Local entrepreneur James Proby runs one of those businesses: The Men’s Xchange began as a way not only to make money, but to offer affordable professional work attire for disadvantaged men in Colorado Springs.

In coming up with the idea for the downtown clothing store, Proby researched similar resources across the country and found that in virtually every city nationwide, there were organizations that helped women secure professional clothing for little to no cost. But the same resources scarcely existed for men.

“So we saw a need,” Proby said. “And the first thing we asked ourselves was, ‘How do we fi ll that?’”

When shopping at The Men’s Xchange, customers are able to purchase high-quality, gently used business apparel at about one-tenth of the cost of purchasing the items new.

A full, tailored suit costs $40. Sports jackets are $30, and dress shirts and slacks top out at $10.

But when a customer walks through the doors, Proby doesn’t just picture the profit he stands to gain from the sale of a suit; he envisions how the sale might help him make an impact on his community, as well as the impact

the suit itself could have on the life of the man who wears it.

And its social impact isn’t just through affordability. The Men’s Xchange has a policy that for every nine suits sold, a 10th is donated to an individual in need who is referred to the business by one of its local nonprofit partners.

“It allows us to take care of those individuals who can’t afford to take care of themselves,” Proby said. “And to remove clothing as a barrier to their next business or employment opportunity.”

For Proby and others who have incorporated a social impact element into their business model, the overall value of a business doesn’t just come from the revenue it generates.

“The impact we get to have on somebody else’s life when they get a chance to profit, benefit, grow, expand their lives and evolve, because of one small thing that we did for them, that is one of the most invaluable things,” Proby said. “In the social enterprise business model as an umbrella, there really are limitless applications. It allows us to have revenue that’s enough for me to think not only about, ‘How do I pay my bills?’ but also, ‘How do I touch the lives of other people?’”

Just down the road from The Men’s Xchange, in the heart of downtown, is a trio of social impact business all under one roof.

The Carter Payne performance and event venue, owned by husband-and-wife team Jeff Zearfoss and Melissa Howard, who also co-own Local Relic brewery in the same building, is making an impact on multiple fronts.

Local Relic, among other social initiatives, focuses on its environmental impact by offering an on-site recycling program, sources local ingredients to craft its beers, and works to ensure its supply chain is sustainable.

The Carter Payne has partnerships promoting local artists, arts organizations and nonprofits, and lends its basement venue to provide a much-needed community meeting space.

“This community … is better when we spend less time screaming at each other in all caps on social media, and more time actually making real, human, face-to-face connections,” Zearfoss said. “So that has sort of led to this idea for a hub for community gathering and for events and socialization and making real connections. We believe in the power of business to do good, so it was important to us to serve as a sort of home for other businesses to help showcase that idea of social impact.”

component that provides educational opportunities for culinary workers to help them secure better jobs at highend restaurants.

Businesses like The Men’s Xchange and those in The Carter Payne represent just a small sample of the innovative social impact business sector, which is growing nationwide and has planted firm roots in Colorado Springs.

And it’s not just for-profit businesses; many local nonprofit organizations are also evaluating the social impact model as a means to secure more consistent funding without having to rely on donor generosity.

The model is gaining so much traction in the Centennial State that just over two years ago, the Colorado Institute for Social Impact (CI4SI) — itself a social enterprise — was launched to provide classes, trainings, consultations and networking opportunities for local entrepreneurs.

Jonathan Liebert is CEO, executive director and co-founder of CI4SI and also serves as CEO and executive director of the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado. He said CI4SI was established in response to growing numbers of business professionals inquiring about the social impact model.

“It was really based on the need of the community and a lack of how-to information out there,” Leibert said. “There’s a lot of basic information online [about the social impact sector] and it’s all great stuff. People get really excited about it because they know there’s an opportunity to help make the community better through business. But what they’re lacking, typically, is information about: What kind of or-

ganization do I start? How should I incorporate? How do I do the accounting? How do I hire?”

CI4SI seeks to provide answers by offering training and educational opportunities to give aspiring social impact business owners the tools they need to successfully set up their new businesses.

And it’s not just new entrepreneurs the institute seeks to assist, it’s also long-tenured business and nonprofit owners who would like to incorporate parts of the social impact philosophy into their current models.

The economy is seeing more “conscious consumers” who research the brands they buy to ensure the businesses they shop at align with their moral and social values.

Incorporating social impact goals can attract fiercely loyal customers who prioritize a business’ social impact over its convenience and even its cost.

“Conscious consumers are on the rise,” Liebert said. “All of us, we go out and we buy products. And you’re essentially voting with your wallet every time you buy something — meaning, every time you buy a product from a company, you’re telling that company, ‘Keep doing what you’re doing.’

“So for some people, they just kind of buy what they want because it’s the best price or whatever, and that’s fine. But … for more and more consumers, specifically Millennials, they are researching a company on the internet before they are buying from them — and they are purchasing from companies that are giving back to nonprofits in their community.”

Outside of industry-focused trainings and education, another goal of CI4SI is to measure the impact and promote

awareness about what’s being called the fourth sector of the economy (the other three being extraction of raw materials, manufacturing and services).

Liebert said in measuring social-impact businesses across the country, states such as Colorado, and cities such as Denver, have been identified as hotbeds of activity.

And while Colorado Springs has not specifically been identified as one of those hotbeds, Liebert said the city’s tightknit business and philanthropic communities should position the city for a vibrant social impact scene that could possibly outpace even the much larger Denver market.

“I really think that Colorado Springs can lead the nation on this,” Leibert said. “Because I think what we’re starting to see right now is a shift in business.

“At the end of the day, what I love about this new sector of the economy is that everybody wins. I think people recognize that they can use this business model to create more impact in the community. And they can do it with things that they buy every day by just doing a little more research.”

Zearfoss agrees.

“I think we’re fortunate that Colorado Springs really is a leader on a national level in regards to this,” he said. “Every dollar that gets spent is a vote. So if those votes are being cast in favor of businesses that are operating responsibility and sustainability across a number of metrics, it’s a way to build the community and build the world that you want to see as a consumer.”

This holiday season, if you’re shopping for anyone who appreciates something unique and handcrafted, you have no shortage of options to explore. Expect the unexpected, the weird and the wonderful at the Group Art Show & Market at the Perk Downtown on First Friday.

Works includes pieces that are no larger than 18 inches in every dimension, but that is the only restriction. You’ll find pottery, paintings, wood and glass work, prints and photography and more from nearly 150 artists. Small Works is a juried show, but it had an open call for entries, meaning you might find work by artists who have never exhibited on Springs gallery walls before.

But, of course, familiar artists will also be well-represented among the galleries’ nearly 500 works. Rockstar painter Phil Lear is sure to submit a few pieces, along with S.P.Q.R. owner Brett Andrus, and fine art painter Claire Swinford whose figures often capture a sense of warmth and nostalgia.

Modbo owner Lauren Ciborowski estimates that most works in the show will be priced between $20-$300. Small Works is a purchase-and-take event, so be sure to show up early in the show’s run to get the best selection. We recommend opening night, Dec. 6. Claim the perfect gift before it’s gone!

Next, let’s take you somewhere outside the Springs’ creative districts: Gallery G44 (1785 S. Eighth St., suite A), which will once again offer its annual Holiday Show through Dec. 22. Here, you’ll find the playful and exuberant sculpture work of local eccentric Sean O’Meallie, the fascinating layered paint constructions of Karen Khoury, and the intricate textile and mixed-media work of Cass Mullane — plus, you know, more than 50 other artists if none of that suits your fancy.

According to owner Gundega Stevens, prices run anywhere from $4 to $3,000, with most pieces falling between $200 and $500.

That’s the stuff that’s up throughout the month, but ‘tis the season, too, for holiday gift and craft fairs. There are too many to name, so here are two that we’re looking forward to.

First off, we love everything underground, eclectic and off the rails — meaning we love graffiti artist Jantzen Peake, who has joined with a cohort of other locals to put on a group art show and market at The Perk Downtown for First Friday (Dec. 6, 7:30-10 p.m.). Works for sale will range between $10-$100, and

Peake expects a variety of mediums from watercolor to jewelry to custom T-shirt graphics, sculpture and mixed-media, among others.

Look out for abstract and contemporary art, and works influenced by pop culture, like cartoon-inspired art by Tokka, clothing by Richard Arnot of Edifice Clothing, and of course Peake himself. This is also a curated show, so be assured that you’ll be browsing the best of the best.

This same weekend, Colorado College will, once again, host its annual Arts and Crafts Sale (Dec. 6, 4-8 p.m., and Dec. 7-8, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), a juried market with original works by more than 80 local artists and many Colorado College students, who bring fresh work to the table. Here’s your chance to jump in on the ground floor and patronize the next big name in Etsy handcrafting or fine contemporary art. The sale lasts three days, and CC press materials say there will be a variety of mediums: clay, fiber, metals, glass, wood, photography, painting and drawing, and sculpture.

Of course, art doesn’t only exist on the wall or on a pedestal. If that special someone on your list enjoys a good stage show now and again, look no further than the Springs’ local theaters. Take your darling on a date to the Millibo Art Theatre’s annual holiday cabaret, Yule be Naughty Too (Dec. 12-22), which features local circus acts, physical comedy, aerial acrobatics and sweet and sultry music to put you in the holiday spirit. Wanna bring the kiddos? Look instead to the MAT’s Dances with Trolls, a family holiday show about Princess Snowflakey’s adventure with a crew of naughty holiday trolls.

Meanwhile, over at the Ent Center for the Arts, you can give the gift of a spirited cultural experience with A Celtic Family Christmas (Dec. 18, 7 p.m.), a concert of award-winning fiddlers Natalie MacMaster, Donnell Leahy, and their children. Should you wish for a little less sweetness in your holiday, Funky Little Theater Company will be putting on the irreverent southern Christmas comedy, A Doublewide Texas Christmas (Dec. 6-21).

We’re ready for the season of giving!

Collection boxes are in our lobby and ready for Toys for Tots, 4KidzSports and non-perishable food donations! In 2018, generous donations from community organizations and military unit collection efforts made Mt. Carmel the largest Toys for Tots collection site in the Pikes Peak region. Toys for Tots requests new, unwrapped toys for infants, children and teens. Mt. Carmel is also a collection site for 4KidzSports, a local non-profit that provides gently-used sports gear to help youth advance their lives through their faith and participation in sports, music, the arts, academics, and leadership training.
