AMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — I have the privilege of meeting with Airmen every day. Sometimes it is for joyful events such as promotions or awards, but other times it is for more deliberate counseling or course corrections.

Whatever the circumstance, I find that the conversation eventually evolves to the point where I ask some fundamental, but incredibly important questions.

Every meeting is a chance to positively influence someone’s future, but you must first understand where the other person is in their personal and professional journey before you can help them on their path. In my experience, the following questions rise to the forefront and are applicable to anyone at any age.

What do you value?

Since publication in 2009, more than 52 million people have watched Simon Sinek’s TedTalk “Start with Why.” Although Sinek is a charismatic speaker, it is his message that resonates. No matter if you are rich or poor, an Airman or General Officer, you have to know what is important if you want to live a fulfilling life.

We all have an unknown but finite amount of time on earth.

Although we often act to the contrary, we need to be deliberate

with our precious time. You have to understand what is important before you can set or change your course.

Your values should not only drive your strategic goals in life, but also explain fundamental questions about why you choose to serve. Our former Chief of Staff, Gen. David Goldfein, put it succinctly when he explained that Airmen serve because they believe in the “value proposition.”

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Force Support Squadron’s 19th annual Turkey Trot race is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 3 p.m.

The 2.5-mile race won’t be canceled due to the pandemic, though it will have guidelines in place for runners’ safety, said Seth Cannello, 50th Force Support Squadron fitness and sports manager.

“I will encourage people to spread out before the race and wear their masks,” Cannello said. “If people don’t think they’ll finish in the top three, there’s really no point in gathering together at the starting line. People can stagger themselves if they don’t feel comfortable being next to someone to ensure proper [physical] distancing.”

The race follows the “wing run” route, which starts north of the batting cages and takes Airmen west on the running trail, then north along the perimeter fence line.

The route then wraps along the housing area and back to the start. Cannello said the course will have easy-

to-follow markers for participants to avoid confusion during the race.

While the fitness center staff expects to have many participants, the amount varies due to multiple factors.

“When it’s warm, we typically have more people, so I’m hoping the great weather we’ve been having holds,” Cannello said. “Now that we are once again at 50 percent manning, I’m not sure what to expect. In a good year, we have between 100 and 150 people. When the weather is poor, the number of participants drops to less than 50.”

For some, weather won’t factor into the run. James Driscoll, 50th FSS Education Center flight chief, said he’ll be sure to follow COVID-19 instructions for the race, but is excited for the event regardless of conditions.

“As a runner I rarely know ‘bad weather,’” Driscoll said. “I run the Pikes Peak Rescue run every year on New Year’s Day. It is affectionately called, ‘Rain, Snow or 20 Below Run!’ We have run in [negative] 30 wind chill, blizzards, etcetera.”

While the Turkey Trot serves as a method of exercise for Airmen, Driscoll said he loves the group energy

“I am an avid runner, I participate in over 35 events per year, both on-base and downtown,” Driscoll said.

“Having the opportunity to participate with other members of the running community and Team Schriever is a needed psychological and emotional boost.”

Cannello said it’s important to ensure the 50th FSS fitness staff can offer such an event, especially with the holidays around the corner.

“We are offering a fun fitness challenge that will bring the SAFB community together in a non-work/ non-stressful environment,” Cannello said. “Being rewarded with a T-shirt at the end of an event is always an added bonus. The challenge should give Airmen an idea of where their fitness levels are standing. [Physical training] testing is scheduled to resume in January, which is right around the corner.”

not important to you, then you need to ask yourself why.

The answer can be deep-seated reasons or something as simple, but vexing as self-discipline. I often think of a quote from my high school football coach, a job very similar to command: “Don’t let short-term pleasures have long-term consequences.”

Although it is easy to think of this in terms of life-altering events, remember, the sum of countless small choices throughout the day, weeks or year will have long-term consequences. These small, daily choices may or may not ultimately align with your values and goals.

We must be constantly vigilant to ensure we are acting deliberately with our time and effort.

How do you integrate the different facets of your life?

We often encounter challenges when we decide to balance our professional and personal lives. This approach is fundamentally flawed because it assumes we can set up a contract between the two, as if you are two different people — a father/mother/son/daughter at home and someone else at work.

The reality is you bring all of you home and all of you to work. As military members, we are always on duty, ready to answer our nation’s call at a moment’s notice.

This doesn’t allow for “a balanced” approach. Instead, we must integrate our professional and personal lives – a concept Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos advocates – to avoid the perpetual trap of achieving “balance.”

For most, integrating your work and personal life is a challenge. Although work

should not be what you value most in life, it does offer fulfilling relationships and the financial means to support more strategic priorities.

It can seem hypocritical to say you value your family as a top priority, but spend majority of your time at work every week.

However, you must acknowledge to some degree, you are going to work precisely because you value your family.

Your livelihood provides them the means to experience a full and enriched life while transforming you into a better person through your relationships.

This does not mean that you have a transactional relationship with work, it acknowledges there are a host of indirect ways your work can support what you value most in life.

It is about the journey.

It is helpful to remember that your current situation is merely a snapshot of where you happen to be on your journey.

Recall that when Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence, he made a key adaptation to John Locke’s “trinity” in which he substituted “life, liberty, and property” with “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” when outlining mankind’s unalienable rights.

This was a deliberate decision and one packed with meaning. He recognized human beings have an insatiable appetite for improvement that physical goods can never fulfill.

Your idea of fulfillment and self-actualization are not static goals; they advance with each achievement. It is, therefore, the constant pursuit of your values where true happiness lies.

We must recognize we are all on a life-long journey. Our job as leaders and mentors is to help each Airman on their way. I believe asking these three simple questions can help you and others on your path.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Army Col. Michael Hatfield, commander, 100th Missile Defense Brigade, will accept U.S. Strategic Command’s 2019 Omaha Trophy for Global Operations from Rear Adm. William W. “Trey” Wheeler III, USSTRATCOM chief of staff, during a ceremony at U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command Headquarters, 3 Vandenberg St., Peterson Air Force Base, today at 8:15 a.m.

This is the first time an Army unit and the first time an Army National Guard unit has been selected for this prestigious honor, which recognizes outstanding support to the USSTRATCOM mission of strategic deterrence.

“We will continue to be the shield to guard, engage and destroy any threat to the homeland.”

Since then, the tradition has evolved to five awards to recognize USSTRATCOM’s premier intercontinental ballistic missile wing, ballistic missile submarine, strategic bomber wing, global operations (space/cyberspace) unit and strategic aircraft wing.

The 100th Missile Defense Brigade Ground-based Midcourse Defense is the only unit in the Department of Defense tasked with a dedicated mission to defend the U.S. and designated areas from intercontinental ballistic missile attack using ground-based interceptor missiles, emplaced at Fort Greely, Alaska, and Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

On March 25, 2019, the 100th Missile Defense Brigade proved its capability to defend the United States homeland and designated areas against an intercontinental ballistic missile attack. Brigade Soldiers, in concert with mission partners, executed the first ever salvo test launch of the Ground-based Midcourse Defense system: Flight-test Ground-based Interceptor 11.

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Delta 6 space operators participated in the first satellite-hacking event, a collaborative exercise between government, industry, academic and commercial cybersecurity researchers to strengthen security in the space domain, Aug. 7-9.

Hosted by the Department of the Air Force in partnership with the Defense Digital Service, the satellite hacking challenge, Space Security Challenge 2020: Hack-A-Sat, at DEF CON, is one of the world’s largest and most notable hacker conventions. It required the top eight of over 2,000 teams of security researchers, or ethical ‘hackers,’ to test their cybersecurity skills on simulated space systems. These ethical hackers are members of the cyber research and security communities and were tasked to legally and safely identify system weaknesses.

“The Space Force is responsible for operating and assuring technological capabilities that are critical to every American's way of life, from providing navigation through the Global Positioning Satellite to providing national security through space-based missile warning,” said 1st Lt. Alexander Tymchenko, Hack-A-Sat blue team lead. “HackA-Sat demonstrated the very real threats that cyber-attacks on space systems can pose to a digitally connected globe and the need for the Space Force to invest in securing them.”

Center’s Defensive Cyber Operations for Space program office and 12 Delta 6 members in the mission defense teams were responsible for monitoring challenge integrity and keeping score during the scenario-based “Capture the Flag” event. The event involved a fictional storyline that culminated in an uncooperative takeover of a rogue satellite.

In this storyline, the winning team would demonstrate their recapture of the hacked satellite by maneuvering the satellite to take a picture of the moon. Using a CTF challenge model, the goal of the event was to create a community

where one didn’t currently exist by inviting the space, cyber and security research communities to test their skills in a collaborative and open event.

“Delta 6 operators were able to see how the cyber domain interacts with our critical space missions, and the ways in which satellites and antennas can be exploited to disrupt those missions,” said Tymchenko.

Although the contest focused on having hackers find simulated vulnerabilities in space systems, it also helped the U.S. Air Force and Space Force to better understand the adversarial mindset of a hacker when it comes to exploiting space systems.

“By collaborating with the DEF CON community, SMC and the mission defense teams were able to explore unforeseen research areas in the space security domain, and adopt a more adversarial mindset in how we design and defend space systems,” said Capt. Alexandra Preiss, SMC Defensive Cyber Operations-Space lead.

Through events like Hack-A-Sat, which partner the information security community in an open and collaborative manner, SMC, the U.S. Air Force and Space Force will continue to improve the way space systems are secured and defended in order to maintain a secure and optimal space domain.

“The lessons learned from the event are going to help establish a new curriculum for the next generation of cyber professionals to defend the space domain,” Preiss said.

Keep fire safety top of mind when preparing your feast this Thanksgiving Staff Report National Fire Protection Association

QUINCY, Mass. — The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is urging the public to make fire safety a priority when preparing this year’s Thanksgiving feast. The association’s latest Home Cooking Fires report shows that Thanksgiving is the peak day for U.S. home cooking fires followed by the day before Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

According to the report, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,630 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day, three and half times an average day.

Unattended cooking was by far the leading cause of associated fires and fire deaths. Cooking is the leading cause of U.S. home and home fire injuries year-round and the

second-leading cause of home fire deaths.

“Thanksgiving often involves cooking multiple dishes at once, which can be particularly tricky with lots of distractions in and around the kitchen,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy at NFPA. “From getting ready for guests and managing family needs to entertaining when everyone arrives, these types of activities make it all too easy to lose track of what’s cooking, and that’s where a lot of fires tend to happen.”

Carli notes that the pandemic may reduce the number of larger group gatherings in favor of smaller celebrations, which may mean more kitchens being used to cook Thanksgiving meals this year.

NFPA offers these tips and recommendations for safely cooking this Thanksgiving: • Never leave the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop. Some types of cooking, especially those that involve frying or sautéing with oil, need continuous attention.

• When cooking a turkey, or other items in the oven, stay in your home and check on it regularly.

• Set a timer on your stove or phone to keep track of cooking times, particularly for foods that require longer cook times.

• Keep things that can catch fire like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels away from direct contact with the cooking area.

• Avoid long sleeves and hanging fabrics that could

come in contact with a heat source.

• Always cook with a lid beside your pan. If you have a fire, slide the lid over the pan and turn off the burner. Do not remove the cover because the fire could start again.

Let the pan cool for a long time. Never throw water or use a fire extinguisher on a grease fire.

For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. Only open the door once you’re confident the fire is completely out, standing to the side as you do. If you have any doubts or concerns, contact the fire department for assistance.

Keep children at least three feet away from the stove and areas where hot food or drink is being prepared or served. Steam or spills from these items can cause severe burns.

“The pandemic may limit the number of people in homes this year, but there will still be lots of the usual cooking and distractions that contribute to a sharp increase in cooking fires on and around Thanksgiving,” Carli said.

“Being vigilant in the kitchen remains critical to ensuring a fire-safe holiday.”

In addition, NFPA strongly discourages the use of turkey fryers, as these can lead to severe burns, injuries, and property damage. For a safe alternative, NFPA recommends grocery stores, food retailers and restaurants that sell deep-fried turkey.

ON BASE Dependent ID shortage at MPF

The Military Personnel Flight is experiencing a shortage of dependent IDs. The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs. Only new dependents who have experienced a change in status will be issued a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided by MPF. Once the Next Gen cards are functional, MPF will start issuing them based on priority and availability.
