RIENDSVILLE, Tenn. — One of the biggest things you hear around the U.S. Air Force these days is accelerating change, so you read stuff like leveraging inclusion, innovation and diversity.

We’re talking about open-minded approaches that welcome the input of all service members.

But how do you get that insight? We may repeatedly look at issues and ask ourselves, “How can that person, just because they look different than me, possibly influence this mission?” Maybe it’s unanswered because we don’t take the time to appreciate personal experiences.

Space Force gains first professional military education center

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The U.S. Space Force gained its first professional military education center when the Forrest L. Vosler NonCommissioned Officer Academy was transferred from the Air Force Oct. 14 at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

The academy previously fell under the command of Air University’s Thomas N. Barnes Center for Enlisted Education. The education center now falls under the provisional Space Training and Readiness Delta, which serves as the parent organization for a number of education, training and test and evaluation units for the Space Force.

“Under Air University, Vosler has played a significant role in transforming enlisted professional military education into the student-centered collaborative it is today,” said Col. Kathryn Brown, Thomas N. Barnes Center for Enlisted Education commander. “As with any organization, it’s the people who serve who are its beating heart, giving [the center] its vibrancy and expertise to accomplish its mission.”

The Vosler academy first opened its doors in 1994 as the U.S. Space Command NCO PME center to “make good NCOs better.”

Today, the NCOA provides training at the second level of enlisted PME at PAFB for both Air Force and Space Force E-6s and is designed to prepare technical sergeants to become professional, war-fighting Airmen and Space Force members who can manage and lead units in the employment of air and space power.

the new service to establish its own EPME system by Oct. 1, 2023, which will serve as the focal point for all resident Space Force profession of arms centered PME curriculum for the enlisted force at key points in their careers, specifically at grades E-4, E-6, E-8 and E-9. Space Force EPME will deliver curriculum focused on USSF doctrine, values and competencies to equip enlisted space professionals to enable the freedom of operation in, from, and to the space domain and enhance the lethality of the joint force.

Vosler will continue to serve the EPME’s needs for USSF and USAF E-6s until the transition of the USSF EPME Center is fully established. Once the center is established, USAF E-6s who previously would have attended the Peterson NCOA will be absorbed back into other USAF NCOA schools, and USSF members will no longer utilize USAF EPME institutions except when accomplishing joint EPME opportunities.

“Over the years, the academy celebrated several firsts,” Brown said. “The first sister service graduate, the first female commandant and the first NCO preparatory course, which would become what we know as Airmen Leadership School.”

The academy’s most recent “first” is an important milestone for the newest military branch.

“Your benefit to the Space Force is already deeply felt,” Brown said, addressing members of the Vosler Academy.

“Over the past several months, you have helped develop space-focused curriculum to enhance existing curriculum to rapidly meet the need of space education. This transfer is a tremendous step toward the establishment of EPME for the Space Force.”

After accepting command of the academy, Col. Peter Flores, provisional STAR Delta commander, ended the ceremony with closing remarks.

“What a great day for the Space Force and for Vosler,” Flores said. “I’m a history buff, so I think of these things in terms of the context of the Profession of Arms. This is an incredibly exciting time for STAR Delta. We’re going to learn from this experience how [to improve] Space Force [specific] EPME and how to continue to partner with the Air Force, which we’re going to do for decades to come.”

Family Advocacy offers FAST counseling

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron Family Advocacy Program offers free therapy to Airmen, space professionals and their families at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

The FAP’s Strengths-based Therapy (FAST) is a resource Airmen can use to proactively manage stressors they may have within their family.

“FAST counseling provides support for any type of marital, couple, relationship, family or individual stressors that have a family nexus,” said 1st Lt. Ryan Barney, 21st OMRS family advocacy officer.

“There is no shame in asking for help.”

FAST counseling is confidential and voluntary, meaning an Airman’s chain of command cannot mandate the therapy and will not be notified of their attendance unless there is a major safety risk involved.

“There is no shame in asking for help,” said Kim Vehige, 21st ORMS family advocacy intervention specialist.

“Being in the military has its own stressors that non-military families don't have to deal with. We want folks to act proactively before things cross over into something that can be a much bigger issue.”

Stressors involved with working in the military can include shift work, deploying and a permanent change of station.

Therapists who conduct FAST counseling are licensed clinical social workers who are credentialed through the 21st Medical Group.

“Given all the stress with COVID[-19] and uncertainty this year, people are struggling,” Barney said. “We want Airmen to know there are services available to them so they don’t have to bear all that stress on their own.”

The counseling can be as many or as few sessions a client feels is necessary, with a typical session lasting one hour.

“If you’ve never seen a counselor before, it can be intimidating,” Barney said. “Our goal as providers is to make you feel at ease and help you understand what we’re here for. We don’t want to push people to talk about things they don’t want to.”

The FAP is open weekdays 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for

appointments. If Airmen and their families cannot attend counseling during those hours, the FAP team will connect them with services in the community that are available on evenings and weekends.

“We're not able to solve everyone’s issues,” Vehige said.

“But we want to give [families] more skills and tools to be able to manage conflict.”

than appreciating our apparent differences and here’s an example for you.

When I was building a deck at my camp several years ago, I worked off a set plan-and-materials list for a standard cantilever design, which I had selected from a builder’s book to use. And I was looking to purchase pre-cut wood runners for the deck’s stairs. Next time you are in a lumber store, you can locate them to get an idea of what I’m describing.

I thought that I had a pretty good idea from my plans and the pre-built stuff on how it would go. I had worked as a carpenter’s apprentice at one time, so I felt comfortable that I had the skills and knowledge to get it done quickly by myself.

However, shortly after starting the project, a close family member had a terrible automobile accident and broke dozens of bones on their left side. After months in the hospital, they were in a disabled and in wheelchair.

Sacred Space offers inspiration to Airmen

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The Schriever Chaplain Corps office hosts an ongoing video series dubbed “Sacred Space” on the Schriever Air Force Base Facebook page.

“Sacred Space” is a video that is designed to easily reach Airmen, space professionals and civilians.

“The messages are meant for everyone — no religious devotion is necessary.”

“We are able to engage Airmen and their families over the internet, by sending out a brief video message just encouraging them and inspiring hope as they go through their journey,” said Capt. Ronald Lawrence, PetersonSchriever Garrison chaplain.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic affecting many Airmen, the Chaplain Corps office created a way to prevail and boost morale.

“[Sacred Space] was birthed out of trying to do something creative to reach folks during the time of COVID response,” Lawrence said.

Although the motivational messages are provided by the Chaplain Corps office here, the messages are meant for everyone — no religious devotion is necessary.

Staff Sgt. Lathaniel Leigh, Schriever Chaplain Corps religious affairs Airman, said she has the opportunity to create and present Sacred Space videos as well.

“Sacred Space is more of a spiritual message than it is a religious message,” Leigh said. “So as a religious affairs Airman, I can speak on spiritual [matters], but I cannot counsel on religion.”

Providing viewer feedback on the “Sacred Space” videos is welcomed by the Chaplain Corps office.

“If people have suggestions or ideas for topics or just how [the message] has impacted them, feedback is nice and we're always open to ideas as well,” Leigh said.

‘DON’T GIVE UP’ campaign inspires P-S GAR Airmen

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — Thirteen Peterson-Schriever Garrison Airmen displayed motivational words and handed out candy at the North gate at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado as part of the ‘Don’t Give Up’ event Oct. 30.

The event’s organizer, Master Sgt. Erin Kirby-Guanill, 21st Medical Squadron aerospace medicine flight chief, said ‘Don’t Give Up’ served as a reminder to Airmen and civilians that they’re loved and have a support system.

Kirby-Guanill decided to implement the event here after hosting a similar event during her time at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

“Getting out there and showing everybody we love them and we’re here for them is important to me,” she said.

Kirby-Guanill’s nephew and sister both died by suicide and she said she understands how gestures of kindness can affect an individual.

“It takes a village to raise a child and I have the

same mindset when it comes to caring for Airmen.”

“I don’t ever want somebody’s family to go through what my family went through,” she said.

Seeing Airmen and civilians smile and hearing them honk their horns in support of the display assured Kirby-Guanill people appreciate their efforts.

“We’ve done this twice and the first time, a lot of people went to the first sergeants who work in the [restricted area] and told them how wonderful [Don’t Give Up] was,” Kirby-Guanill said. “Someone stopped me in the hospital and said they appreciated us telling them good morning and he didn’t realize how much people need that sometimes.”

Staff Sgt. Lathaniel Leigh, Schriever Chaplain Corps religious affairs Airman, said she was “eager” to participate in the campaign after hearing feedback from the first event held Sept. 29.

Brief interactions with Team Schriever personnel prior to their work day beginning plays a vital role in their psyche as they work to complete the mission, Leigh said.

“It takes a village to raise a child and I have the same mindset when it comes to caring for Airmen,” Leigh said. “My hope is [this] will encourage others to reach out if they are struggling.”

Kirby-Guanill plans to hold another gate event the week of Thanksgiving at Peterson Air Force Base and a holiday event here in December.

“I feel like these events help me as much as they help others,” KirbyGuanill said. “It’s so wonderful here because there’s no shortage of volunteers to help at the gates. The leadership on this base wants to be involved and show their support and I’m glad we’re able to help anyone who needs it.”

50th CES to install new light poles

SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — The 50th Civil Engineer Squadron is scheduled to replace 176 light poles across Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, starting mid-November.

The new light poles include improved engineering compared to the current ones, which have been on the installation for over 32 years.

“The previous designs didn’t take into account wind, vibrations and other natural variables,” said Hannah Yeung, 50th CES mechanical engineer. “The [current] light poles are failing because of this and some have already fallen, so it’s time to replace them.”

Of the 176 light poles that are scheduled to be replaced, 29 of them have fallen within the last year due to engineering failures, thus posing safety hazards to base personnel and infrastructure.

The current estimated project time is 220 days until completion. The new light poles will be installed around Building 210, the 21st Medical Squadron clinic, the Child Development Center, the base event center and the North and West portal parking lots, among other areas on the installation. There are no scheduled light pole installations within the restricted area. “[We do] not expect any major impact on the base population,” said Tech. Sgt. Jacob Mason, 50th CES noncommissioned officer in charge of construction management. “The largest noticeable impact is a few parking spots [will be] [un]available while the installation is occurring.”

Mason estimates five to eight parking spots will be taken up per light pole installation in the parking lots.

ON BASE Dependent ID shortage at MPF The Military Personnel Flight is experiencing a shortage of dependent IDs. The Air Force will be shifting to Next Gen IDs for dependents and no longer ship additional orders of the previous ID card stock. To make the current stock last, the MPF will be prioritizing issuance of dependent IDs, only new dependents who have experience a change in status will be issue a card at this time. An exception for expired dependent IDs has been extended to June 30, 2021, with memo in hand that is provided by MPF. Once the Next Gen cards are functional, MPF will start issuing them based on priority and availability.
