eterans Day is a U.S. legal holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars, and Veterans Day 2019 occurs on Monday, Nov. 11. In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated in many countries as Armistice Day the following year, Nov. 11 became a federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day.

ARMISTICE DAY

The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, marking the official end of World War I. Nonetheless, the armistice date of Nov. 11, 1918, remained in the public imagination as the date that marked the end of the conflict.

One year later, in November 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilsonproclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The day’s observation included parades and public gatherings, as well as a brief pause in business and school activities at 11 a.m.

On Nov. 11, 1921, an unidentified American soldier killed in the war was buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C. On the same day the previous year, unidentified soldiers were laid to rest at Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

Red poppies, a symbol of World War I from their appearance in the beloved poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae, are sold in Canada and the United Kingdom on Remembrance Day to raise money for veterans or worn in the lapel as a tribute.

On June 4, 1926, Congress passed a resolution that the “recurring anniversary of [Nov. 11, 1918] should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations,” and that the president should issue an annual proclamation calling for the observance of Armistice Day. By that time, 27 state legislatures had made Nov. 11 a legal holiday. An act approved May 13, 1938 made Nov. 11 a legal Federal holiday, “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day.'” In actuality, there are no U.S. national holidays because the states retain the right to designate their own, and the government can only designate holidays for federal employees and for the District of Columbia. In practice, however, states almost always follow the federal lead.

American effort during World War II saw the greatest mobilization of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force in the nation’s history (more than 16 million people); some 5.7 million more served in the Korean War. In 1954, after lobbying efforts by

veterans’ service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday, striking the word “Armistice” in favor of “Veterans.”

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954. From then on, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

The next development in the story of Veterans Day unfolded in 1968, when Congress passed the Uniform Holidays Bill, which sought to ensure three-day weekends for federal employees—and encourage tourism and travel—by celebrating four national holidays (Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Columbus Day) on Mondays.

The observation of Veterans Day was set as the fourth Monday in October. The first Veterans Day under the new law was Monday, Oct. 25, 1971; confusion ensued, as many states disapproved of this change, and continued to observe the holiday on its original date.

In 1975, after it became evident that the actual date of Veterans Day carried historical and patriotic significance to many Americans, President Gerald Ford signed a new law returning the observation of Veterans Day to Nov. 11 beginning in 1978. If Nov. 11 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the federal government observes the holiday on the previous Friday or following Monday, respectively.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Great Britain, France, Australia and Canada also commemorate the veterans of World War I and II on or near Nov. 11: Canada has Remembrance Day, while Britain has Remembrance Sunday (the second Sunday of November). In Europe, Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every Nov. 11.

In the United States, an official wreathlaying ceremony is held each Veterans Day at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, while parades and other celebrations are held in states around the country.

Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day—a common misunderstanding, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Memorial Day (the fourth Monday in May) honors American servicemembers who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade The Colorado Veterans Day Parade proceeds south on Tejon Street, starting at St. Vrain Street and ending at Vermijo Avenue.

HISTORY OF THE PARADE Several years ago, a small group of patriotic volunteers formed a nonprofit organization to host an annual Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade. Our mission is simple: To honor all veterans and to educate and inspire community awareness while paying tribute to the service and sacrifices all veterans have endured in the pursuit of freedom.

In just this short time, our parade has grown to be one of the biggest and best in the United States. This has only been possible because of the work of hundreds of community volunteers and the generous financial support of the local business community which covers all the parade’s costs.

We have rekindled a great tradition where veterans are enthusiastically cheered as they walk down Tejon Street in Colorado Springs. For that reason, and because we encourage participation by all veterans (including those who are not members of a formal organization), veterans come from all over southern Colorado to participate in the parade.

In addition to presenting the parade, our board works diligently to educate children of all ages on the sacrifices our military veterans have made. We encourage kids to participate in or attend the parade as a way of saying thank you to our veterans. Over 500 Boy and Girl Scouts marched or assisted with the parade; five high schools built patriotic floats for the parade, and ten high school bands played a musical tribute to our veterans. We also had approximately 40,000 spectators at the parade; many of these were children with their families, so it appears our efforts to educate today’s youth are paying off.

We have Active Duty Units from the Air Force Academy, Ft. Carson, Peterson & Schriever Air Force bases representing branches of the Air Force, Army and Navy regularly participate, as well as Canadian Units stationed in the Colorado Springs-area bases.

The Colorado Springs Veterans Day Parade is entirely funded through donations from local businesses and individual contributors. It costs approximately $50,000 annually to host and those funds are received through monetary as well as in-kind donations. The parade board does not receive any funding through any government agency, and we do NOT charge veterans to participate; nor do we solicit funds from their organizations. We are an IRS approved 501c (3) nonprofit organization.

PARKING

HANDICAPPED SPECTATOR PARKING: On Bijou Street between Tejon Street & Nevada Avenue.

Handicapped spectators can sit in their car and watch the parade, or watch from outside of their vehicle (their option).

HANDICAPPED PARTICIPANT PARKING: On Platte Avenue between Tejon Street and Nevada Avenue (close to the Acacia Park Apartments) for elderly and disabled veterans that are participating in the parade only. Meters will be hooded but handicapped participants will still be able to park.

Veteran’s Day Parade

The Pledge of Allegiance From THE RED SKELTON HOUR, January 14, 1969

On January 14, 1969, I presented “The Little Old Man” as a teacher. The time was 1923. The students had finished reciting the Pledge of Allegiance which at the time was but 10 years old. The old sage called the children together and said, “Boys and girls, I have been listening to you recite the Pledge of Allegiance all semester and it appears that it has become monotonous to you or could be you do not know the meaning of those words. If I may, I would like to recite the Pledge and give to you a definition of the words.

I – meaning me, an individual, a committee of one.

Pledge – dedicate all of my worldly goods to give without self-pity.

Allegiance – my love and my devotion.

To the Flag – our standard, Old Glory, a symbol of freedom. Wherever she waves, there is respect because your loyalty has given her a dignity that shouts freedom is everybody’s job.

Of the United – that means that we have all come together.

States – individual communities that have united into 48 great states 48 individual communities with pride and dignity and purpose, all divided with imaginary boundaries, yet united to a common cause, and that’s love of country.

Of America.

And to the Republic – a republic, a state in which sovereign power is invested in representatives chosen by the people to govern. And government is the people and it’s from the people to the leaders, not from the leaders to the people.

For which it stands!

One nation – meaning, so blessed by God. Indivisible – incapable of being divided.

With Liberty – which is freedom and the right of power to live one’s life without threats or fear or any sort of retaliation.

And justice – The principle and quality of dealing fairly with others.

For all – which means, boys and girls, it’s as much your country as it is mine.”

Since I was a small boy, two states have been added to our nation, and two words have been added to the Pledge of allegiance. “under God.” Wouldn’t it be a pity if someone said, “That’s a prayer” and that would be eliminated from schools, too?
