Brood X

They're Back!! - Brood X Cicadas It’s been 17 years since their last visit. It’s safe to say that most of us aren’t going to welcome the Brood X cicadas back with open arms, but let’s try to make the most of their visit! This particular Brood is different from previous years because it’s going to be the largest predicted amount of cicadas to emerge since 2004. There’s no need to worry if you’re an entomophobe, a person who fears insects - these cicadas are harmless! The thing that sets Brood X apart from the annual cicadas we see is its proximity to large metropolitan areas. With Oxford being close to Cincinnati, we are lucky enough to be in an area where the Brood will appear. These little buggers

will only last about four to six weeks after they emerge, so their stay is short lived. They do, however, make a lot of noise - cicadas have been reported to be loud enough en masse to drown out the sound of passenger jets passing directly overhead. Talk about loud! Miami’s campus is a prime location for Brood X cicadas to stay during their visit in the midwest. All of the trees throughout campus, the Formal Gardens, Western’s Campus, and much more are the perfect conditions for the cicadas to emerge. The cicadas will even be showing off their Miami spirit with their distinct red eyes.
