Monday-Friday | 10:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Chick-fil-A on campus is open throughout January, giving Miami University staff a great opportunity to enjoy a favorite lunch spot before students return for the start of the spring semester. This exciting new dining venue, which opened last fall in Armstrong Student Center, quickly became the busiest dining operation in the building, driven by strong student demand. During January, Chick-fil-A will be open Monday through Friday from 10:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.—the perfect chance to enjoy a relaxed workday lunch and your favorite menu items without the semester rush. Fun fact from the fall semester: the number one item purchased was the classic chicken nuggets. Have you tried them yet?

In honor of Black History Month, Miami Dining is partnering with the Black Student Action Association to create a custom menu with dishes inspired by African American culinary traditions! Everyone is invited to come to Western Dining Commons on Feb. 24 from 4:30 to 8 p.m. to try the menu and learn about influential figures and moments in history.

WINTER ROAD SAFETY Nicole Roberts Winter weather has already made its way to Oxford. MUPD provides the following reminders to ensure everyone stays safe on the roads. Before heading out: • Check the weather where you are, as well as at your destination, when going longer distances • Check that your tires are properly inflated • Pack a winter safety kit in your vehicle • Remove all snow and ice from your vehicle before driving • Make sure your phone is fully charged, and you have a charger with you • Don’t let your gas get below 1/2 tank
When driving: • Turn on your headlights • Increase your following distance to allow more space to stop • If you slide on ice, don’t brake or accelerate. Remove your foot from the gas and gently steer your vehicle in the direction of the skid • Slow down before exiting highways, as ramps often have icy patches • If your car breaks down, pull off the road as far as possible and turn on your emergency flashers. Stay in your car until help arrives
Winter safety kits may include: • Food and water • Extra clothing • Blankets • Flashlight and batteries • Ice scraper • Jumper cables or a portable jump box • Essential medication

Staff Development is excited to share that our 2026 workshop schedule is now available in the Workday Learning Library. After working closely with campus partners, we’ve finalized a full lineup of learning opportunities designed to support growth, skill-building, and professional development across Miami University. This year’s offerings include our refreshed Microsoft Excel Series (Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced), Google Sheets courses, and our Performance Management Series, which supports effective goal setting, feedback, and performance conversations. We’ll also continue offering popular assessment-based workshops such as Strengths, MBTI, and DiSC in the Workplace, helping individuals and teams strengthen communication, collaboration, and self-awareness. To find these courses and more, check out the Workday Learning Library. In addition to scheduled workshops, Staff Development will continue adding new content and learning opportunities throughout the year. MUPD STAFF CHANGES Nicole Roberts During the fall, MUPD welcomed two new officers and celebrated the retirement of another. Ofc. Haylie Brown joined MUPD from the City of Batesville, Indiana, in August. She was awarded a bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Joseph University in 2020 before completing her Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 2021. In her service to the City of Batesville, Ofc. Brown responded to calls for service, conducted criminal investigations, and was trained in evidence collection and preservation. She quickly earned her Ohio Peace Officer Certification and has been assigned to day shift responsibilities. Ofc. Paul Hellwarth came to MUPD from the City of Oxford in December. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Purdue University in 2015 before starting his law enforcement career in Wayne County, Indiana. He then completed his Ohio Peace Officer Academy in 2019. Ofc. Hellwarth has experience as a patrol officer, SWAT team member, and field training officer. He will be assigned to second shift upon completion of his initial training. MUPD also celebrated the retirement of Sgt. Thomas Lampl in November. He started his law enforcement career in 2000 as a patrolman for the City of Hamilton. He then served the Miami community from 2006-25. During his tenure, Sgt. Lampl was a patrol officer, field training officer, firearms instructor, detective, master investigator, and patrol supervisor. We thank him for his service and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

During winter weather, please use extra caution when approaching your bus stop, as sidewalks and curbs may be icy. Stand back from the roadway and make sure you’re visible to approaching buses, especially during low-light conditions. Keep your hands free by securing bags so you can hold railings when boarding or stepping off the bus, as steps may be slippery. Allow extra time for travel, as winter conditions can cause delays. Staying alert and prepared helps ensure a safe and comfortable ride for everyone.

MIAMI’S FIRST LICENSED ELEVATOR TECHNICIAN RESPONDS TO STATE LAW Denny Sickinger The State of Ohio recently passed a new law requiring anyone working on an elevator to be licensed by the state. One of our elevator technicians, Summer Shaffer, became the first elevator mechanic in Ohio to take, and pass, the five hour exam on Nov. 26, therefore obtaining her license. We found out about this law at the very last minute, meaning she had minimal time to prepare. By obtaining this license, Miami can keep doing elevator work in-house and continue to operate business as usual.

MIAMI CLUB WATER SKI TEAM Izze Keller The Miami Club Water Ski Team recently qualified and competed in the NCWSA Water Ski National Championships. This event took place from October 16th through the 18th at the Imperial Lakes in El Centro, California. The event hosted a number of different types of skiing events. The top 24 teams in the nation make it to either Division 1 or Division 2. These teams go through certain qualifying events before competing at the national level. The Miami Water Ski Team has competed at the Division 1 level for five consecutive years. The year before this they won the Division 2 championship. It is very rare that a midwest team competes in Division 1 as they aren’t able to compete and practice year round like some other teams in warmer climates. This speaks to the team's determination and commitment to their sport. When interviewing members of the team they often spoke of what they call “ski babies”, these are what they call their new members who haven’t skied competitively or at all in the past. The team prides themselves on taking new skiers and turning them into competitive athletes. The team spoke a lot about how much nationals brings the team together and is one of the highlights for the year. Members of the team said, “nationals is so fun…you get to talk to people with different experiences and get to hang out and have fun with them”. When interviewed the team spoke about the amazing experiences and people they get to meet through this experience. In 2024 the team won the Syndicate Spirit Award. This is presented to the team that shows the most comradery and commitment to their teammates. At nationals there is a different outfit theme each day, each team will dress up together. This brings them together and is a great, exciting experience for their teambuilding.

This year at nationals there were many amazing records set by the Miami team. Charlotte Matson set the newest team record with a jump of 77 feet. She is followed by Rachel Bell who now holds the second farthest with a jump of 65 feet. On the men’s side, three of their teammates (Drake Peavy, Jimmy Bolan, Braylen Lynch) joined the century club, meaning they jumped over 100 feet. Drake Peavy holds the third farthest jump of 113 feet for the Miami team. All of these records were set at this year’s national championship. It was a very successful competition for these athletes. The team also spoke about a tradition that is carried out every time there is a new personal best scored on the team. The captains take note of this and the team member is then “tackled” in the water by their other teammates. When the team spoke on this they stated, “The team shows you how proud of you they are… we have such a supportive culture”. This “tackling” as they call it shows how proud and supportive the team is. They foster an environment where everyone is included, and have a great experience. Many of the athletes on the team today are children or siblings of past team members. This shows the great reputation and supportive environment that the team creates. Overall, this team had a wonderful nationals experience. One of the seniors on the team spoke about her experience, “as a senior it has made my college experience…I wouldn't do it any different…it’s truly not just a ski team it's a family.” This is how all of the team members feel towards the Water Ski environment. The athletes consider each other family. They care for each other and achieve great things together as a team.

25LIVE LAUNCH: A BIG WIN FOR EVENT PLANNING The academic year started with a major milestone for Conference and Event Services (CES): the successful rollout of 25Live as the new system for managing all university conference and event spaces. The transition took a full year and strong collaboration across multiple departments. It also marked a big shift away from the long-standing Event Management System (EMS), which had been customized over nearly 20 years. While the change came with challenges, CES Director Paula Green credits the team’s shared commitment and expertise for making it a success. Green recognized key contributors including Geoff Combs and Hannah Muldoon-Davis of Armstrong, Brett Couch of Regionals, and the team’s 25Live Product Representative, whose support helped keep things moving smoothly. Special thanks also go to Alicia Rizzo of CES and Cody Pergram of the Registrar’s Office. Because the Registrar already uses 25Live for academic scheduling, Pergram played a critical role in building conference and meeting spaces, setting up security groups, and helping onboard the events team.

At the same time, Rizzo focused on creating the customer-facing tools and internal workflows that power event requests, messaging, notifications, and reporting. Her work has helped planners stay consistent and made it easier for customers to submit and track events. The first semester with 25Live has come with a learning curve, but the CES team has used that time to fine-tune processes and document best practices. Moving forward, the focus is on continuous improvement—making event scheduling even more efficient and effective for campus partners and guests to Miami's campus.

GOGGIN ICE CENTER TO CLOSE APRIL 5 FOR MAJOR SUSTAINABILITY-FOCUSED RENOVATION Goggin Ice Center will close for the season on April 5 to support a major renovation of the refrigeration system that maintains the facility’s ice rinks. The project will replace the current R-22 Freon refrigerant with R-717 ammonia, a more sustainable and efficient alternative. R-22, once a commonly used refrigerant, has been phased out globally due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP) and environmental impact if released into the atmosphere. Production and import of R-22 into the United States ended in 2020, resulting in limited availability and rising costs. In contrast, R-717 ammonia is a natural refrigerant with a GWP of zero and is considered the most energy-efficient option for industrial refrigeration systems. This upgrade will have a positive impact on Miami University and the surrounding community by eliminating a potentially harmful refrigerant and reducing the facility’s annual energy consumption. Additionally, heat generated during the ice-making process, currently exhausted into the atmosphere, will be reclaimed and integrated into university utility systems, reducing overall water consumption at Goggin. The renovation will also include the installation of independent heat transfer systems for each ice sheet, allowing for improved control of ice surface temperatures and overall rink performance. The closure does not impact Club Lounge and other space rentals in the arena. Goggin Ice Center is scheduled to reopen in early June for 2026 Summer Camps.
