MIAMI UNIVERSITY FINANCE AND BUSINESS SERVICES

MIICITAAWI MYAAMIA MIICIONI

LET'S EAT MYAAMIA FOOD | SPRING 2026

Bridget Maney and Aslynn Wetzel

Miami Dining Services is honored to partner once again with the Myaamia Center to host a special lunch featuring Myaamia-inspired dishes. This bi-annual event celebrates more than 50 years of partnership between the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and Miami University, offering a meaningful opportunity to enjoy traditional foods and learn more about Myaamia history and culture.

In anticipation of this event, Miami Dining intern Aslynn Wetzel spoke with Kara Strass, director of Miami Tribe relations at the Myaamia Center and a citizen of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma.

“Food is a very important part of Myaamia Culture,” says Kara, “and is something [that] brings our community together.” For her, this lunch is an opportunity for

Myaamia people to come together to try inspired dishes that incorporate ingredients native to this land, and she’s excited to see the broader Miami University community embrace flavors that might be new to them. Miami University students, staff, and faculty are invited to try our delicious menu, learn about the Miami Tribe, and engage with Myaamia people and the work they are doing to revitalize many aspects of their culture.

Join us April 16 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Western Dining Commons to try Myaamia food items.

The Myaamiaki Conference takes place April 18 at the Shriver Center — just two days later. This biennial event highlights ongoing work to support the revitalization of Myaamia language and culture and is open to the public.

GOGGIN ICE CENTER CLOSED THROUGH JUNE FOR MAJOR SUSTAINABILITY-FOCUSED RENOVATION

Goggin Ice Center closed on April 5 to support a major renovation of the refrigeration system that maintains the facility’s ice rinks. The project will replace the current R-22 freon refrigerant with R-717 ammonia, a more sustainable and efficient alternative.

R-22, once a commonly used refrigerant, has been phased out globally due to its high Global Warming Potential (GWP) and environmental impact if released into the atmosphere. Production and import of R-22 into the United States ended in 2020, resulting in limited availability and rising costs. In contrast, R-717 ammonia is a natural refrigerant with a GWP of zero and is considered the most energy-efficient option for industrial refrigeration systems.

This upgrade will have a positive impact on Miami University and the surrounding community by eliminating a potentially harmful refrigerant and reducing the facility’s annual energy consumption. Additionally, heat generated during the ice-making process, currently exhausted into the atmosphere, will be reclaimed and integrated into university utility systems, reducing overall water consumption at Goggin.

The renovation will also include the installation of independent heat transfer systems for each ice sheet, allowing for improved control of ice surface temperatures and overall rink performance.

The closure does not impact Club Lounge and other space rentals in the arena. Goggin Ice Center is scheduled to reopen in early June for 2026 Summer Camps.

NEW OFFICERS AT MUPD

MUPD recently welcomed two new officers.

OFC. BRENT WESSELER

Ofc. Brent Wesseler graduated from the University of Northwestern Ohio in 2015 and has been in law enforcement since 2017. He has experience in Indiana as a sheriff’s deputy, police officer, and state excise officer. He recently completed his Ohio Peace Officer Certification and is assigned to second-shift patrol.

MUPD EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR

Nicole

Det. Nelda Mattison was recently recognized as the 2025 MUPD Employee of the Year.

She has been a training officer for new officers, as well as new detectives, during her time here. Many Miamians also know Det. Mattison from her regular safety presentations across campus.

We are fortunate to have Det. Mattison as part of our department, and we thank her for her service to Miami.

Congratulations Nelda!

OFC. RYAN COSTELLO

Ofc. Ryan Costello is an Army veteran and was sworn in after recently completing his OPOTA basic training academy. He will now move on to field training on campus and will be assigned to day-shift patrol.

SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS

Spring in Ohio means frequently changing and sometimes unpredictable weather. It’s important to be familiar with the dangers in our area and know what to do before bad weather strikes.

Thunderstorms are powerful and dangerous. All thunderstorms produce lightning, and no place outside is safe in a thunderstorm. When you hear thunder, immediately seek shelter in a sturdy building, and make sure you have your emergency kit with you.

Tornadoes can develop quickly and move just as fast. Make sure everyone in your home knows where to go before a storm. Basements, underground shelters, and interior rooms without windows offer the most protection. A tornado watch means: Be prepared. Tornadoes are possible in your area, and you need to be ready to move quickly to your safe place. A tornado warning means: Take action. A tornado is imminent or has been sighted in your area. Move to your safe place and take your emergency kit with you.

Now is the time to prepare your emergency kit. You don’t want to wait until you need it. Kits should include flashlights, a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, water, food, and essential medications. Candles should be avoided, as they pose a fire risk. If you have pets, you will need to include food and water for them, as well as any crates or kennels to help keep them safe. When you hear a storm is coming, make sure all electronics are charged, and backup batteries are ready.

Flooding can happen quickly, and even though the storm may have passed, dangerous conditions can remain. You should know alternate ways to get to and from your home, so you can avoid low-lying areas prone to flooding. Never attempt to walk or drive through floodwater. It only takes six inches of water to knock down an adult, and 12 inches of water to carry away most cars.

While all of this bad weather may be concerning, being prepared and knowing what to do will help keep you safe as we move on to longer and warmer days.

MIAMI RECREATION SUMMER CAMPS AND PROGRAMS

As we look ahead to summer, Miami Recreation is gearing up for another exciting season of youth camps and programs. With a wide variety of options available, there’s something for every interest and age group, making it a great opportunity for staff to help spread the word.

This year’s lineup includes favorites like Rec Kids Camp, which offers a mix of games, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, and climbing, as well as Outdoor Pursuit Camp, where kids can explore nature, build friendships, and take on the high challenge course. Specialty camps such as Esports Camp, Climbing Camp, and Equestrian Camp provide unique experiences ranging from gaming fundamentals to outdoor adventure and hands-on time with horses at the Miami Equestrian Center.

For those looking for a shorter introduction to horseback riding, Equestrian Horse Days offer a one-day experience for younger participants to learn about horse care, behavior, and riding in a fun, welcoming environment.

In addition to camps, Miami Recreation will host Community Access Week, giving individuals and families the chance to explore facilities and amenities with flexible, one-day access throughout the week. Discounted summer memberships will also be available, providing full-season access for those looking to stay active all summer long.

With programs running from early June through late July, now is the perfect time to help promote these opportunities and connect families with a summer full of activity, learning, and fun.

MIAMI YOUTH HOCKEY CELEBRATES A REMARKABLE 2025-2026 SEASON

The 2025-2026 season was a tremendous success for Miami Youth Hockey, with teams across multiple levels achieving historic milestones, tournament championships, and impressive rankings.

The High School Varsity team led the way with a program-record 44 wins, finishing the season ranked second in the state and advancing to the State Final Four. The team also captured championships at the Indiana vs. Ohio Showcase, the George DiPaolo Thanksgiving Tournament, and the Pioneer Classic Invitational. The High School Junior Varsity team also had a standout year, earning the OSHL League Title, finishing as state runner-up, and achieving the highest ranking and rating in program history.

Success continued throughout the youth levels. The 14U Johnson team won the Buffalo Outdoor Classic, while the 14U A Morisaki team captured the Knoxville

Smoky Mountain Shootout Championship. At the 12U level, the 12U A Wernke team won the Big Bear Big Chill Championship, and the 12U B Geiger team went undefeated to claim the BTHL Championship.

The momentum carried into the younger divisions as well, with the 10U Miller team finishing undefeated in Buckeye League play and the 10U A Jackson team earning first place in the BTHL Silver Division with an impressive 29-9-2 record.

In addition, Coach Dan Wernke of the 12U A team was honored as Coach of the Year, recognizing his leadership and the team’s outstanding season.

From historic varsity achievements to championship performances across youth divisions, the season showcased the talent, dedication, and growth of Miami Youth Hockey at Goggin Ice Center.

A HEART FOR MIAMI AND ITS STUDENTS

When you walk into Market Street at MacCracken, you’ll likely find Danielle Hokanson greeting students with a smile and making sure everything runs smoothly. For Danielle, it's more than just a job. “I love this place,” she says. “It feels like home. My heart is here with Miami, the students, my team, and the job.”

Danielle joined Dining Services in 2022, bringing with her a background in customer service and retail. Originally from Hope, Indiana, she moved to Oxford from Cincinnati and quickly found her place on campus. “Being new to town, this was the place to be,” she recalls.

Over the past four years, Danielle has worked in several campus markets, including Scoreboard Market, King Cafe, and Garden Market, before settling into her current role as supervisor at MacCracken. Along the way, she’s gained skills she never imagined — everything from inventory management to invoicing. “I’ve grown so much in retail operations,” she says. “These are skills I didn’t think I would obtain through previous experiences.”

For Danielle, the most rewarding part of her job is the students. She loves watching them grow, building personal relationships, and even catching up with them after graduation. “We give them a sense of home,” she explains. “Especially the ones who come in multiple times a day. They tell us about their classes, their day, and we’re here to listen.”

Her dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Jen Robertson, director of markets, shares, “Danielle has great dedication to her job and her team. She is dependable, knowledgeable, and always goes above and beyond. She knows what needs to be done, and I am very thankful to have her on my team.”

Danielle describes the team culture as positive and collaborative. “We know how to get the job done, but we have fun while doing it,” she says. That sense of camaraderie keeps her motivated, along with the leadership team and the students she serves every day.

When asked what advice she would give to someone starting a career in Dining Services, Danielle doesn’t hesitate: “Keep pushing forward and have a positive mindset.”

Her story is a testament to Miami’s Love and Honor mindset and a commitment to community, growth, and connection. For Danielle, MacCracken isn’t just a workplace, it’s a home filled with purpose and people who matter.

A RECIPE FOR LOVE AND TEAMWORK

In Dining Services, teamwork is essential, but for Miles and Rachel Points, it’s also the foundation of their life together. This dynamic duo has spent years serving students and supporting colleagues, all while building a strong partnership both at work and at home.

The couple met 10 years ago through a dating app, and after a few years of dating, they moved in together and tied the knot in 2021. Today, they share a home filled with four cats, a dog, four snakes, a tarantula, and two guinea pigs; a lively household that reflects their adventurous spirit.

Rachel was the first to join Dining Services, starting as a dishwasher before working her way up through several roles, including lead food service assistant and assistant manager in the markets. She now serves as a supervisor at Western Dining Commons, where she thrives on connecting with staff and students. “I love talking with people,” Rachel says. “I’ve grown so much in public speaking and leadership. Now I enjoy hosting meetings and team-building activities.”

Miles joined the team in 2018, beginning as an assistant cook and steadily advancing to sous chef at Maplestreet Dining Commons. His passion lies in mentoring others. “I love getting out in the kitchen, managing the staff, and watching cooks grow and become better,” he says. “It gives me a sense of pride.”

Although they now work at different locations, Miles and Rachel still find ways to collaborate, whether through sharing ideas to improve operations or working together at special events like hockey games. “We’re a two-for-

one situation,” says Rachel. “Our management teams know both of us and help us keep similar schedules. It’s nice to have that balance.”

For Miles and Rachel, working in Dining Services is a shared experience that has strengthened their skills and their partnership. They have learned to balance their careers while supporting each other’s goals. Both enjoy exchanging ideas and learning from the different approaches at Maplestreet and Western.

As they look ahead, they remain focused on growth and teamwork. Their story shows how collaboration and adaptability can lead to success. For this couple, progress comes from learning, supporting each other, and continuing to move forward together.

CREATIVITY AND CARE AT PATIO GRILL

Patio Grill is one of Miami’s most unique dining locations, not only for its creative menu, but also because it is the only retail location on campus completely free of the top nine allergens. Behind the scenes, Dennis Hammer, a cook at Patio Grill, plays an important role in delivering quality meals and ensuring every dish meets the highest standards.

Dennis’s career path has been anything but ordinary. Originally from North Carolina, he has lived in 18 different states and worked in a variety of fields, including advertising, bartending, and even driving a paratransit bus. His diverse experiences eventually led him to Dining Services, where he saw an opportunity to combine creativity with culinary work.

Since joining the team, Dennis has embraced the challenge of making Patio Grill a place for students seeking safe, flavorful options. He values the opportunity to learn from colleagues across campus and credits his time at Miami with making him a stronger cook. “Every chef I’ve worked with has taught me something new,” he shares.

Patio Grill’s allergen-free environment requires precision and care, and Dennis takes pride in ensuring every order is prepared thoughtfully. “We want students to feel confident about what they’re eating,” he explains. “Our goal is to make food that looks and tastes great, even if it’s enjoyed later.”

For Dennis, the most rewarding part of his role is working alongside a dedicated team. “When everyone is focused on the same goal, it’s fun,” he says. “We solve one problem at a time and keep moving forward.” His advice for anyone considering a career in dining services reflects his own journey: Find work you truly enjoy and never stop learning.

With Dennis and the Patio Grill team leading the way, the future promises flavorful innovation and a continued commitment to serving students with care.

KNOW YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

Creating a safe campus environment starts with knowing what to do when an incident occurs.

Employees who sustain an injury on campus should immediately notify their supervisor and submit an Occupational Injury/Illness Report the same day as the injury, but no later than 24 hours. Examples of work-related illnesses that should be reported include musculoskeletal disorders (back pain, carpal tunnel), skin diseases (contact dermatitis), and hearing loss. These do not include common seasonal colds or flu.

A Non-Occupational Accident Report Form should be completed if a student or visitor is injured on campus or on university-owned property. The injured individual should complete the form whenever possible. If the extent of the injury prevents this, a witness or anyone with knowledge of the incident may complete the form.

Near-Miss forms should be submitted to report a potential hazard or incident that did not result in personal injury or property damage. Examples include unsafe conditions, improper use of equipment, faulty equipment, or failure to follow proper procedures.

Submitting these forms helps identify unsafe conditions or practices so corrective action can be taken — supporting a safe and healthy campus environment for all.

Forms can be found on Miami’s Environmental Health & Safety webpage.
