January marks the start of a new semester, and commencing a new year of excellence is a challenge itself to be embodied by all Lynxes. The achievements of the past semester, endowed by the vibrant nature of Ad Infinitum’s first LynxWrapped, manifests that amidst the challenges of the past year, Lynxes still conquered the beaten path, and will stride into new horizons this 2024 with marking some fundamental strides.

However, there are also novel issues that come as both a blessing and a hurdle, such as revising our country’s constitution, in force since 1987, and has been described by then-Chief Justice Hilario Davide, one of its framers, as the only constitution that is pro-people, pro-poor, pro-social justice, pro-human rights, profamily, pro-marriage, pro-environment, pro women and pro-youth, yet simply works in the hands of a poor Congress, the same Congress that is in an active race to revise our nation’s charter for “economic purposes” that would allow the leeway of changes that would potentially threaten the security felt by Filipinos.

Another charter to be discussed is the widespread sentiment for an “independent Minanao” espoused by many public figures, that as the peace university of our country, we must seek into further research behind this popular clamor to ensure that the role of peace in this diverse region of our nation could still be fulfilled by the National Government, and our resources being properly allocated.

Finally, the charter that needs revision is our voyage as a student council, guided by the helm of the Kataastaasang Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral (KASAMA) officers who seek to revise the KASAMA CBL, in force since 2010. We express hope that such revision shall be reflective of the common will of all IITians towards a more effective KASAMA, and go onto the path of student support espoused by our college and University officials.

January, indeed, has become a journey of its own, from a metaphorical “50 days” of lengthy waiting and long progress, compared to the swift tide of the rest of the year’s months. This sense of timeliness should indeed remind us to use time wisely, as the first week of January is described as the National Time Consciousness Week. On behalf of the whole publication, we hope that all Lynxes have used their January wisely, especially on the conduct of their society activities, in the welcoming of classes and embarking in a new journey of academic life.

May we all have a productive year ahead to charter our journey towards influencing the future of Mindanao and beyond.

Lynxes back at school for A.Y. 20232024’s second semester Farah Dimpas

Proofread by: Stephen Guisando Photo by: James Monteza As the second semester for the academic year 2023-2024 kicks off on January 9, 2023, CSM students find themselves on the brink of new opportunities, challenges, and adventures as they embark on a new journey towards exciting new experiences, challenges and opportunities.

On the first day of classes, both new and returning students gathered, ready to learn new things, make connections with their peers, and take on the challenges of the approaching semester. While faculty loading was ongoing for some General Education subjects, CSM professors have already begun meeting with their students on the first week of classes.

According to Marryl Laput, a 4th year BS - Mathematics student, “It’s the first day of school, but we expect a tiring semester as we face our undergraduate thesis.” She added that the first day of classes also sets the tone for the rest of the semester.

Moreover, to kick 2024 off with a competitive start, the Haynayan Society under the Department of Biological Sciences also held its society days starting today and will last until Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024.

Moreover, the area stage for the Philippine Math Olympiad was also successfully conducted last January 13, 2024 at CSM LHB. It can be recalled that CSM also hosted the qualifying stages of the said math olympiad, which were held at various Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DMS) rooms last December 2, 2023.

"The Regional Testing Center is in Xavier University, Cagayan de Oro City. Now, owing to the distance from the regional testing center to the individual participants, the organizers of the Philippine Mathematical Olympiad opened an STC here in Iligan," Assoc. Prof. Michael B. Frondoza, Ph.D., Satellite Testing coordinator told Ad Infinitum.

The area stage is where qualifiers from all over Mindanao converge to determine the national-level contestants, Prof. Frondoza added, and such qualifiers in the area stage will proceed to the National finals, where contestants from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will go on a head-on competition.

"Before participants reach the national levels of the Philippine Mathematical Olympiad, there are qualifying and area examinations to be held. We are hosting the qualifying rounds, and this opens many opportunities for our secondary students.

Some of these opportunities are visible on the PMO Facebook page," Dr. Frondoza added.

Hosting such olympiad testing centers also allows competitors from various provinces around Mindanao to harness their talents, and also consider the vast improvements of CSM facilities to host further events of academic exchange amongst Math and Physics enthusiasts.

PRISM DevBio Lab Holds LectureSeminar on Stem Cell Disease Modelling Applications Walid Omar

To discuss opportunities in stem cell research in the Philippines, the Developmental Biology (DevBio) Laboratory in the Premier Research Institute of Science and Technology at MSU-IIT hosted a lectureseminar featuring Dr. Ahmad Reza Y. Mazahery from UP Diliman's Institute of Biology today, January 10, 2024, from 9 AM to 11 AM. Dr. Mazahery provided insights into stem cell technology, emphasizing Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (IPSC).

Furthermore, he expounded on the challenges in stem cell research, such as using stem cells beyond clinical applications unrecognized by the Philippine laws. Further restrictions on importation and logistical constraints are said to cause delays in research.

The highlight of the seminar was the discussion on disease modelling— defined as small-scale biological models used to mimic disease processes. One reason for doing so is the need to have ethically acceptable test subjects, as identification of targets cannot be studied directly in patients.

The typical process researchers take in studying stem cells is to select a matured cell and introduce it with a genetic factor, which will then proceed to induction, where the cells become IPSCs. Once IPSCs are available for research use, they are introduced to modified organisms or to model biochemical reactions toward certain diseases.

The lecture showcased promising applications of IPSC, including research on HIV, leptospirosis, liver diseases, bronchiectasis, and more diseases undergoing further research on Filipino populations.

Dr. Mazahery concluded the seminar by advising researchers to acknowledge the gradual nature of scientific studies, emphasizing the importance of patience, persistence, and building connections within the scientific community.

It was also announced by the seminar secretariat that certificates of participation in the seminar would be given to the attendees later through email.

SMAS holds Finals Round for 2023 Search for MSU-IIT Math Wizard James Monteza

The Statistics and Mathematics Society (SMaS) successfully concluded the 2023 Search for MSU-IIT's Math Wizard at CSM Lecture Hall B from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today, January 24, 2024.

The pre-final, wildcard, and final rounds were conducted via a raised-board competition.

Contestants were evaluated by the board of judges, composed of Dr. Karlo Orge, Lyster Cabardo, and Gabriel Engcong.

Prince Vanness C. Balaquit, a secondyear BS Chemical Engineering student, was declared the 2023 MSU-IIT Math Wizard after besting 18 competitors in the final rounds. Completing the top 4 were Norence Zyron Bedasua (BS Civil Engineering) as first runner-up, Kyle Dedoro (BS Electronics Engineering) as second runner-up, and Germaine Phil Herrera (BS Electrical Engineering) as third runner-up, showcasing their exceptional mathematical prowess throughout the contest.

The top 2 Math Wizard Winners are set to participate in the Nationwide Search for Math Wizard at the University of the Philippines - Diliman, according to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Chairperson, Dr. Mhelmar Labendia. Dr. Labendia highlighted the importance of conducting Math Wizard competitions, stating that it creates a challenging environment and friendly competition for MSU-IIT students.

In an interview with Ad Infinitum, Balaquit stated that he was honoured to be named Math Wizard 2023, even though his answers commonly relied on a stroke of luck. “Chamba ra to akong answers.” He added, “Pero, I'm really happy to be here.” He also revealed that he could not prepare much for the competition, occupied with academic work as an engineering student. “All I did was to be myself and have fun in the said competition.”

His advice to future Math Wizards: have fun in the competition. “The reason why I joined this year’s Math Wizard is because I found it fun. If that (having fun) is what you want, you will slowly but surely fit in there.”

In his closing remarks, Dr. Karlo Orge thanked the 18 finalists and the rest of the participants and wished Balaquit and Bedasua, who will be competing nationally, good luck. He also expects more IITians to join the 2024 Math Wizard search, which will happen around November this year.

The Constitution and By-Laws of the Kataastaasang Sanggunian ng mga Mag-Aaral (KASAMA) has been in force since the end of the mandate of former Chancellor Marcelo Salazar, and has been a testament of a bygone era in MSU-IIT, where the concepts of being world-class was yet to be born, the precepts of tolerance having yet to take root and the increasingly active and critical studentry yet to be taught with monitoring the ever-dynamic role of MSU-IIT’s Supreme Student Council.

After a series of political crises gripping the student body, in the aftermath of a constitutional amendment that was supposed to allow graduate students to hold power in the undergraduates’ representative body, and following a Truss-esque turnover of the shortest-serving KASAMA president, the studentry believes it is high time for the KASAMA CBL to be given a reboot and that flare went signaling ablaze during KASAMA’s general assembly last January 19, 2024.

With the Sanggunian adapting to a more transparent way of governance in light of an increasingly digitally-native constituency, the open forum of the said GenAss highlighted the role of student services and organizations, climaxing in discussions on reforming the KASAMA CBL. This was a topic hotly discussed at that timeframe as Hannah Polangi, then-senatorial aspirant and now head of the Institute Legislative Body, was a keen advocate of reforming KASAMA’s charter, pushing the provisions of an outdated constitution into finding purviews towards the future. The expectation towards the new administration was to go in-depth with rewriting the constitution and bylaws of MSU-IIT’s highest Student Council—and they are about to deliver this promise to IITians in due time– with Polangi heading a committee on revisions, working hand in hand with governors, sectoral representatives, and students from various backgrounds to rewrite the student council’s fundamental law.

While the discussions on CBL revision during GAAP season were scant, as the voice of the Lynxes, we had to go further and envision what this charter revision would look like, especially in the eyes of the architect behind this essential reform and revision. We approached Senate President Polangi, scoping her insights to help CSM students keep their eyes peeled as a new charter will soon be revealed.

Timely Updating and Rebooting Roles In the eyes of the new CBL’s principal framer, timeliness is of the essence, and in her words, the KASAMA ConCon aims to provide an up-to-date constitution that will be beneficial and timely representing the constituents.

“The vagueness of the roles of the executive council will be addressed, and the reassessment of the organizational structure of the councils will be fulfilled for determining a more effective practice towards a more effective governance,” she added.

Moreover, CSM students are more likely to expect a greater role of the newly-revived Council of Organizations (COO) within the revised constitution, as some leadership positions in university-based student organizations are held by Lynxes. In this manner, this rebooting of roles benefits most Lynxes that are active not only as KASAMA officers and associates but also in the executive councils, university orgs, and college-based societies, attesting to the new CBL’s potential to sustain org-life among more IITians.

Furthermore, the Office of Student Development Services (OSDS), in the onboarding and organization of the COO, seeks to make KASAMA as well as the university-based student organizations as partners in sustainability through community engagement following the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

The new CBL should then, touch further on sustainability as well as the efficiency of KASAMA, and its potential for partnerships among organizations to ensure common goals and align with Chancellor Alizedney Ditucalan’s 5-year roadmap towards the pillars of student support and community engagement.

Chartering Change: Expecting inclusivity and stability On the matter of the process of the CBL reading, she mentioned that a committee headed by Senate President Hannah Polangi herself, together with Senator John Lloyd Pioquinto and CVG Precious S. Camelotes, have drafted their Internal Rules of Procedure (IRP) for the Constitutional Convention, specifying the proceedings on introducing amendments and discussing the process of readings, with the full IRP to be disclosed to the public shortly after it is approved. The mentioned procedure consists of the aforementioned committee members and functions and delegates from KASAMA as well as the respective Governors. Finally, the ratification process will run through a plebiscite, which will be held before the end of their term.

From a busy CSM student’s perspective, the plebiscite should run on a major institute event, preferably near the PALAKASAN, rather than disrupt the final examinations or conflict with the KASAMA election season at the end of the Academic year.

OPINION

Student publications should also be tapped in this golden opportunity to inform the studentry about the contents of the new CBL, how its provisions work, and how the University administration prioritizes the concerns of students in demanding an efficient and effective student council for all IITians.

Polangi also emphasized that the OSDS has expressed their support for her project and conducted a Constitutional Convention Assembly to present the amended CBL to their constituents. This Assembly should be the capstone of various efforts from student sectors in MSU-IIT to ensure an informed constituency for a chance to look into the fundamental law of KASAMA that hopefully, will remain effective for years to come—and KASAMA could not do it alone.

“Executive councils, society heads, and the publication are the drivers for mass information dissemination throughout the studentry which is why they will be considered to be invited for the 3rd and final reading of the amendment and will have the chance to contribute to the ongoing amendment of the constitution and bylaws [of KASAMA].”

Sustaining the footsteps of change Finally, while there are glimmers of hope that this window to a new and more effective CBL could happen within this administration, Polangi clarified that if the amendment process will not be pushed through in the current administration, she's hoping that the next administration will continue her project.

“Amending the constitution is tantamount to being a mindful leader towards the people since she believes that it's the right of the students to be under into a system that will carry them out from misery and deliver them to an inclusive, secured, and just learning environment,” she concluded.

At the end of this consultative process, a CBL should be crafted for a transparent KASAMA, and a more efficient student body would be created that would align with the University’s vision of sustainability.

As students, we continue to influence our path toward an inclusive and world-class future that also deserves a student council that embodies efficiency, effectivity, and excellence.

Now is indeed the time to have it as several issues have already risen and this project of constitutional reform is a step towards solutions that will further solidify the executive councils, student organizations, and the studentry as a whole as “one KASAMA”.

At the end of the day, when the new CBL takes force, may the KASAMA CBL bring forth an inclusive and renewed identity supported by the so-called "mother of all Constitutions" of this institution, an institution that will guide the future of Mindanao towards the steps of progress.

KASAMA holds General Assembly for 2024, highlights student services and org plans Jireh Maghinay

One of the events that wrapped up the General Assembly was the Press Conference, where IITians had a chance to raise questions on student services.

The MSU-IIT pageant winners were asked about IITian life as the event concluded. Miss Iligan 2023 and Animal Biology student Kristel Anne Codas empathized that MSU-IIT is our community and the people that make our stay in the University memorable.

Leizel Abijay, an aspiring lepidopterist, graduated with a BS Biology (major in Zoology) and a Master of Science in Biology degree from MSU-IIT’s very own Department of Biological Sciences. Her recent publication in the Philippine Journal of Science (PJS) has inspired many Lynxes, particularly BS Biology students who admired her work with butterflies.

In an article published by PJS on Facebook, she revealed that the journal was at the top of her list of potential publications, and one of her experts from the University of the Philippines-Los Banos, advised her to publish her first paper in such a reputable publication. With her paper accepted, butterflies were metaphorically released in her stomach.

“I felt relieved, and I can say all of our hard work paid off (and I gave justice to the butterflies I captured haha),” she said in the PJS article. She also looks forward to more scholarly publications with PJS in the future.

Abijay’s journey as a budding butterfly scientist had its ups and downs, from being inspired by butterflies at a young age to facing blunders and medical emergencies during fieldwork.

Even though her journey was surrounded by doubts, her unwavering pursuit of knowledge paved the way for her to contribute to the field of research.

Her grip towards achieving success was enough to get featured in PJS with her first publication. However, it was not solely her efforts alone but a collective one, as she stressed how her colleagues aided her work during the entire field sampling.

Abijay also advised young individuals, especially Lynxes in her PJS feature to never hesitate to ask questions, seek good mentors, and embrace and learn from failures.

Building networks is also a crucial aspect of building collaboration with other researchers. In her closing statement, she highlighted that curiosity is done for service.

“Always remember that we do this not only for personal gain but for our country. Stay passionate!” she said.

All of these roots back to her statement “I want to be one of them” and has then stuck to it until the very end of her journey. Once a dreamer, she is now an igniter of dreams for many researchers that goes beyond the curiosity of academic compliance, as delight would come last to the chase when it was a sweet process.

Two Vice Chancy profs from CSM swap roles in 2024 James Monteza

Two professors from the College of Science and Mathematics holding Vice-Chancellor (VC) portfolios have been reorganized effective for the Academic Year 2023-2024.

Prof. Ephrime Metillo, then-VC for Academic Affairs (OVCAA), is now the VC for Research and Enterprise (OVCRE). Meanwhile, former OVCRE head Prof.

Gaudencio Petalcorin Jr. has now taken on the helm of OVCAA. According to a post on the university's official Facebook page, the change benefits both offices and clusters that the respective vice chancellors represent.

Meanwhile, Prof. Joey Genevieve Martinez, another CSM professor with a VC role, still holds the position of Vice Chancellor for International Affairs (OVCIA), a role he has held since January 2023.

It can be recalled that Prof. Metillo hails from the Department of Marine Science and Prof. Petalcorin from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Moreover, Prof. Martinez also comes from the Department of Biological Sciences.

Another change in the Vice Chancellors' offices is renaming the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development (OVCPD) into the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives. Prof. Pamela F. Resurrecion still heads the office, as mentioned above.

Ready to Go Beyond: Recapping the PreMidyear Graduation Activities Farah Dimpas

The Life after College Symposium, Application Letter and Resume Writing Workshop, Mock Job Interview, and Tribute Night were among the three days of Alay sa Graduates Activities of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) held on January 22–24, 2024. These events took place at the Mini Theater, Gymnasium, and Institute's Rizal Park, respectively. The MSU-IIT Career Center and Alumni and Endowment Fund Center oversaw the initiatives, which aimed to enhance the employability and readiness of the soon-to-be graduates entering the job market.

These exercises help graduates build and hone skills like professional document writing, effective communication, and interpersonal skills. They also aim to give graduates confidence, expose them to real-world work environments, and provide constructive feedback for continued improvement. All things considered, these initiatives help graduates make the smoothest possible transition from school to the working world by making sure they are competitive, well-prepared, and ready to handle the obstacles of the job application process.

Ada Bahian, a BS Animal Biology senior student, states, “Attending the symposiums and activities organized by the career center has helped me grasp possible scenarios of the impending shift from college life to the adult world.

The activities also allowed her to have a clearer career path after graduation. ”Though, there are no fixed blueprints for how my adult life would play out, because of the activities the center provided, I get to see glimpses of possible scenarios and steps I could take after graduation, whether it be continuing to graduate school, how to apply for jobs or decide on changing my career path. “ she added.

“One thing I've also found helpful in these sessions is the fear of uncertainty. We are being assured that all our concerns are valid and we are provided possible steps and solutions to make the unknown known.” Bahian concluded.

With their knowledge, credentials, and experiences from the Alay sa Graduates Activities, the graduates are ready to go beyond and step on the 13th Mid-Year Graduation Ceremonies on February 2, 2024, at the University Gymnasium.

Microbreo spikes out Plantaya in Haynayan Days Men’s Volleyball Finals James Monteza

The Microbreo Men’s Volleyball team gained the championship title in the Haynayan Days finals game in the Twin Courts, MSU-IIT, on January 10, 2024.

Microbreo scored 25-17, 25-22, and 25-14 in the said game.

Second-year microbiology student Mcdeevson Praga noted that Microbreo took this win collectively and acknowledged the active cheering of students and fans as a big boost towards taking the championship title.

Microbreo, undefeated in the tournament, possessed a clear advantage. However, this setback did not hinder the Animoria Women’s Volleyball team from winning the first finals game in the series. They subsequently took the decisive game victory with 25-23, 25-16, and 25-16 in three sets, respectively.

Kristel Codas, a player from Animoria, noted that initially, the team was not confident, especially since their lineup consisting of 1st to 3rd-year players was secured at the last minute. “Our first game was actually versus Microbreo, and we lost.

However, we didn't lose hope because we still had a chance to push through as long as we won our second game against Plantaya. Thankfully, we won,” she recalled.

“It feels good to have this championship, knowing everyone contributed to claiming this win. Of course, this victory wouldn’t be possible without the loud cheers of mcb students that gave us the morale boost we needed during the match,” he stated.

Microbiology senior Erickson Cale, meanwhile, was declared the most valuable player (MVP) in the said event.

Furthermore, Cale made a unique appearance on stage as he received the award for a Lireo-inspired costume, being Microbreo’s representative to the Haynayan Icons competition. In his acceptance speech, he highlighted that having multiple events in the Haynayan days was challenging. “MVP na gani, [nag-]Icon pa,” he concluded.

Animoria grabs win from Microbreo in twice-to-beat Women’s Volleyball Finals The Lower Bracket semifinals with Biodiviro was more challenging for Codas as their teams got to the deciding third set, and she owes it to the high morale possessed by their team, which was carried through the finals. “We knew we had no choice but to go up, especially since we had to beat Microbreo twice to win the championship match. One loss for us would mean second place, so we had to condition our minds to win both games so that all of our hard work, sweat, tears, and sunburn would all be worth it.”

Finally, Codas thanked her teammates who went with her to victory in this tournament. “To my girls! Even though we didn't have a substitute player, thank you for your strength and courage to push through and play all our games with a golden heart,” she emphasized. “I love you always. I am proud and blessed to have you as my teammates. To animal bio family, daghang salamat! To more wins in the future.”

Codas emphasized that they sought their best to enjoy the game and make Animoria proud, especially with such a strong mindset, high morale, and motivating cheers from Animal Biology supporters. “We would like to thank our Anbio family for supporting us and all the officials and officers who have helped make this event successful. We had fun playing with every single one of the players.”
