The month of December has opened up with numerous challenges and opportunities for Ad Infinitum. For once, we have finalized our release of the October and November monthly issues, and soon we are back on track to publishing our news in a timely manner every month.

While the early days of this month were filled with hectic coverage schedules, the latter parts of December hung around in a somber mood. December was supposed to be a buzz on the publication, focusing on events such as the eliminations (and the now-postponed finals) of the MSU-IIT Math Wizard, the hosting of the Philippine Mathematical Olympiad satellite testing center, the gift-giving initiative of MIDSA this year: Tagkos for a Cause, the upcoming General Assemblies for CSM and KASAMA, yet all the anticipation came to a grinding halt when tragedy struck on December 3, 2023.

A sudden act of violence gripped the Catholic community of MSU, especially during the First Sunday of Advent, the beginning of the Christian liturgical year, when all people gather in anticipation of the Redeemer. At the Dimaporo Gymnasium, where the sacrosanct sacrifice of the Mass was to be offered, a blast, killing four and injuring many, resulted in a shock that ran deep within the hearts of MSUans.

It really pains us to see that this act of violence has led many to question our hope for a maayong MSU after the incident. While the scars of violence dealt within the walls of the MSU Marawi campus have been a phenomenon that has persisted for years, in fact, the Mindanao Varsitarian even cried out against the prevailing culture of impunity within their campus, where the perpetrators of violent acts are still at large and waiting to be brought to justice.

The call for hope should also resound with the call to accountability. Hope is best found when we have nothing to rely on ourselves, and accountability to our administrators as well as our peacekeeping forces makes sure that the trust that remains within us should work to alleviate our fears within the situation of security. By becoming hopeful, we begin to see how interconnected we are with each other. It is in hope that we begin to see the efforts of MSU-IIT and other sister campuses offering acts of solidarity towards the evacuees from the Main Campus, who have left Marawi in haste following the act of violence last December 3. It is with a hopeful spirit that we shelter our fellow MSUans with dignity, and it is with the essence of accountability that the MSU which they return to as a safe university, a peace zone with violence thrives no more.

Villanueva told Ad Infinitum that the Nottingham Open featured his first grand finals appearance, on his first international tournament that later became his first championship. “I am truly humbled and I can only hope that this success inspires others to find their excellence as well.”

Named after a pun on the wellknown college slogan, Team “The Excellencia isn’t Est Norma-ing”, composed of Devlin Villanueva from BS Physics and Zhea Sanchez from BS Biology (Biodiversity), bagged the Grand Championship in the recently concluded Nottingham Debate Open last December 2-3, 2023.

“Kuya Dev and I really did not expect much from this competition. We are both from CSM and I had 8 exams in the coming two weeks,” Sanchez said.

When asked for advice from future CSM debaters, Villanueva emphasized that when in positions of unlikely success, being unprepared and inadequate, one must trust themselves to keep moving forward. “Your belief does not reduce the entire spectrum of possible outcomes that the world will create for you. Take one courageous step forward and see where it takes you, detach yourself from earthly desires, and focus on internal ambition. In a world where perfection is unattainable, your response should be bravery.”

Villanueva was hailed as the finals’ best speaker and 6th tournament best speaker, while Sanchez was named 3rd best speaker. In addition, they were the second-breaking team in the said tournament. Moreover, Tristan Segura from BS Biology (Animal Biology) pushed to the semifinals and also grabbed the title of 6th best speaker.

Yet, throughout six intense debate rounds, Sanchez and Villanueva made it to the grand finals. “When we made it to the grands, I was just overwhelmed, and I wanted to speak my heart out, that’s what I did in my speech with the motion that was entirely philosophical”.

“I just said to myself that I would debate to my fullest extent, but I also would not take it against me if we did not win or break, especially because this is our first international tournament and I know that there are great debaters from all over the world,” she added.

When she saw that her team bagged the grand title, she was left speechless and in tears.

Segura also acknowledged the great deal of inspiration brought about by this victory towards Lynxes. “I hope the achievements that Kuya Dev, Zhea, and I have made cultivate a new interest in debate for those of us in the college. For those who want to have their voices heard, and to those who want to change and discover something within themselves,” he concluded.

Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) garnered a 68.18% overall passing rate in the December 2023 Chemists Licensure Examination conducted last December 13-14, 2023.

Out of 22 takers from MSU-IIT, 15 passed the licensure examination, with 13 succeeding among 17 firsttime takers and 2 out of 5 repeaters qualifying for the boards.

Moreover, 27 Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (BS Chem) graduates also passed the Chemical Technicians Licensure Examination, joining 114 new Registered Chemical Technicians from MSU-IIT who were successful in the said examinations.

MSU-IIT garnered an 87.02% performance rate in the RChT Licensure examinations, with 108 of the 121 first-time takers and 6 out of 10 repeaters passing.

The Registered Chemical Technician Licensure Examination may be taken

by BS Chemistry, BS Chemical Engineering, as well as other courses

such as BS Chemical Engineering Technology, BS Environmental Engineering, and other undergraduate degree holders who have earned at least 30 units of Chemistry-related subjects.

The National Passing Rate for the two examinations stands at 51.74% for Chemists and 82.86% for Chemical Technicians, respectively. MSU-IIT's high passing rate underscores its dedication and competence in becoming licensed chemistry professionals, as well as the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.

Mathematics enthusiasts from various programs over the Institute filled the CSM lobby to compete for the 2023 Search for MSU-IIT Math Wizard. The Statistics and Mathematics Society (SMaS) held elimination rounds today, December 2, 2023, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in CSM rooms 111, 113, 216-218, and 221-A.

“They [the working committees] have contributed to the success of the search for MSU-IIT's Math Wizard 2023, and the future wizards’ appearance has enthralled the elimination round. I’m also excited to see who makes it to the final rounds,” he added.

“As one of the winners of the Math Wizard last year, today’s elimination round was more difficult compared to the elimination round last year. The questions were difficult, and I may not be able to correctly answer some questions, but hopefully, I could enter the top 18 and proceed to the pre-final round,” Herrera concluded.

More than 75 online registrants and 41 walk-in participants took the eliminations, which consisted of a pen and paper test to assess the mathematical capabilities of participants.

Only the top 18 contestants will proceed to the next round and grab a chance to gain the title of Math Wizard this upcoming January.

The finals were originally slated last December 6, 2023, however, the event was postponed upon further announcement.

SMAS Mayor Carl Juvanne Cabillon thanked both the participants as well as the committee behind the event.

Germaine Phil Herrera, 2nd runnerup of last year’s Math Wizard Competition, was one of those who took part in this year’s elimination rounds. He remarked that despite being a placer in last year’s final rounds, this year’s eliminations took a different, and even more difficult, turn.

Asst. Prof. Leonardo Estaño of the Department of Biological Sciences, together with collaborator Dr. Joycelyn Jumawan, received the Best Poster Award in the Scientific Poster Competition under the National Sciences Category at the recent 2023 National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) Mindanao Regional Cluster Convention held last November 30, 2023 at Caraga State University, Butuan City.

He encourages Lynxes to always keep on learning and utilize it to make a difference in the future. “Let’s influence the generation to make one healthy choice.”

The said council is an agency connected to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), and is considered as the advisory body to the Philippine government on matters of national research interest.

Furthermore, it is also known as one of the country's largest and oldest scientific organizations that comprises several professions from all fields of science, including the social sciences and humanities.

Prof. Estaño highlighted the significance of their study, which tackles fishbone zoonotic trematodes with snails and birds as their intermediate and definitive hosts found in the Philippines. “The study underscores the importance of further exploration and comprehension of fish-borne zoonotic trematodes in the Philippines, particularly in unique freshwater ecosystems which have implications for fish, birds, and human health,” he added.

Chemistry Department Chairperson Prof. Charlie Lavilla Jr, Ph.D recently bagged the second-place spot in the poster competition during the International Conference on Drug Discovery and Translational Medicine (ICDDTM) held at Mines Beach Resort, Seri Kembangan, Selangor, Malaysia last December 4-8, 2023.

As a platform of international engagement, ICDDTM brought together various stakeholders in the health research sector—academicians, health industry players, researchers, clinician scientists, medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, other healthcare personnel, policymakers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows—from all parts of the world.

His paper, titled “Selected Mindanaoan Medicinal Plants as Potential Agents to Improve Insulin Resistance in Skeletal Muscles Under Metabolic Stress”, bested other competing posters in the said conference, which aimed to discuss the current progress of drug discovery and trends in translational medicine worldwide.

Notably, an undergraduate BS Chemistry student, Heisen Jane L. Esdicul was among his study’s co-authors. Other collaborators in the said research project were research assistants Charles Klein M. Gorit and Francis N. Limbag, as well as Prof. Mylene M. Uy, the director of the Premier Research Institute of Science and Mathematics (PRISM).

Several graduate students under Prof. Lavilla’s advisory also presented their respective projects at the conference. These were Michael Angelo Circulado, an MSc. Candidate, Jessa Marielle Paulines, an MSc. graduate, and Richemae Lebosada, a PhD student.

Standing up for Peace means making every MSUan safe

Ad Infinitum’s last editorial before its half-decade hiatus (written by its soon-to-be final editor-in-chief, Naf Kabalu) reflected a sentiment of peace that has long rooted since the 2017 Marawi Siege. Malaya nga ba talaga? Malaya bang natatawag kung nakakulong sa dagok ng hawla? Malaya bang matatawag kung hindi makatulog nang mahimbing sa gabi dahil sa takot na matamaan ng mga bala o maputukan ng bomba? Peace of mind comes with freedom, and for MSUans all over the system, the same struggle still exists, the same fear manifested when the Dimaporo Gymnasium was bombed in early December last year.

For some, the incident may have sparked heavy discourse among IITians on campus security, with students suggesting heightened security measures, upgrading the security guards’ batons, installing an Xray machine on the University gate, et cetera. However, from another facet, it has been an unveiling of how the acts of violence within the MSU-Marawi Campus have been a long-ticking wake-up call for their administration to not only plan on safety measures, but also to proactively work on ensuring that all MSU-main students by implementing such policies.

The humorously insensitive meme rampantly circulating in social media viewing that when you graduate from MSU, you not only throw away your cap but also your bulletproof vest and anting-anting strike both chords of criticism and awakening—that a shadow of violence still lingers amidst the hopeful eyes of MSUans aiming to become instruments of peace in the community.

The recent editorials from the Mindanao Varsitarian (the official Student Publication of the MSU-Marawi Campus) have criticized the main campus administration’s laxity towards gaining transparency and trust for MSUans, such as strict entry requirements, introducing gates at all entry points and profiling of university vehicles.

Beyond criticizing the Marawi Campus administration for their supposed laxities, this also serves as a wake-up call for the National Government to invest in university security measures as well as peacebuilding and economic development in Mindanao, and supporting initiatives that lead to lasting peace in the community.

These calls have also underscored the role of dialogue as the university is a diverse community, vastly different from the homogeneity expected around other parts of Marawi City. Moreover, the university needs to be brave for its students, especially in attaining a budget priority for security infrastructure.

Dakilang Pamantasan’s primary mission in this conflict-ridden land is peacebuilding beyond the deterrents of violence. Peace is indeed not the absence of violence, but fostering an environment where violence is remotely possible. The lofty goal of attaining peace within the system should be a holistic one, involving the peace of mind of students, faculty, staff as well as other university constituents alike. While the presence of military or police personnel may be seen as an indicator towards building a secure community, it is not the ultimate arbiter of peace among MSU constituents or even, Mindanaoans at large.

Indeed, a similar trend has popped on over social media in the past month: MSU, ang hirap mong mahalin. MSU, ang hirap mong ipagtanggol. It is indeed difficult to fight for one MSU when we see our fellow MSUans suffering from this lack of trust that they have in the University.

In the Candlelighting and Solidarity event held in Rizal Park last December 14, 2023, our very own Chancellor, Alizedney M. Ditucalan, promised us that MSU-IIT would do its best to make sure IITians are protected by ensuring strict entry access, putting the campus on Code White, and having a comprehensive reevaluation of all university events. Truly, Chanzed reassured our parents, our relatives, and our families that the University is doing its best to keep every IITian safe, but how about our fellow MSUans—how can we fight with them, how can we stand up for them, how can we make their voices that cry for peace to be heard?

Genuine peace among students means having the confidence to walk around MSU without fear, not only because accountability exists for perpetrators of violent acts—but also because people are educated and awakened to realize the importance of a diverse Mindanao, especially within the Mindanao State University System. This confidence must not only run through the veins of IITians but also be realized among all MSUans when we desire to speak of ONE MSU, an MSU that stands up for peace and walks the commitment to make every MSUan– wherever campus they may be, safe in their journey towards attaining the norm of excellence.

Students, to be active and engaged learners, require essential resources beyond learning materials and support systems. It’s crucial to consider our safety, health, and overall wellness.

We can do more and beyond to heighten these measures. For instance, baggage scanners and improved detection systems to detect objects on and inside the individual’s body, and reintroducing temperature screenings to detect elevated temperatures simultaneously.

The recent MSU-Marawi bombing in the Dimaporo Gymnasium raised an outcry of reactions among university constituents. The bombing was not only a ferocity that causes adversity and threat, it also drove consciousness in the state of security and safety in the MSU-IIT campus. It raises a vital question: how safe are the IITians within the premises?

These machines and strategies used by other establishments and institutions guaranteed to amplify safety and could discern sickness early on, mitigating worst scenarios. Some schools in the United States have adopted full-body detection systems for security, the implementation in some Philippine establishments is limited due to cost and health risks, demanding careful consideration.

Moreover, vehicles’ stickers are commended to replace with barcodes to improve access control flow and provide relevant area and identification cards for visitors, thus, aid to distinguish students from other constituents. Knowing who enters and exits the academy is a step forward to attain peace and harmony.

Upon entering, security guards utilize hand-held metal detectors and batons to inspect belongings in addition to checking identification cards and, at times, probed your reason for entry.

Fourth-year students under the BS Statistics Program gathered on December 6 at CSM Lecture Hall B to host their Undergraduate Research Colloquium. The event lasted from 1 pm to 5 pm with seven papers examined throughout the affair. The BS Mathematics Program also held its research colloquium a week earlier on November 29.

The research fields covered during the program included machine learning, data mining, spatio-temporal analysis, and matrix calculus. Prof. Johari M. Abbas, a faculty member from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, remarked that their criticism of the undergraduate proposals benefits the researchers in the long run.

“I hope you will apply the suggestions that the faculty told you. This is just the beginning [of your research journey],” Prof. Abbas remarked.

Karen Jalop, a presenter at the colloquium, noted that the event was truly a gratifying moment upon seeing their ideas materialize and finally come to life, and that this event was made possible after months of dedicated effort. “With the guidance of our eversupportive faculty and advisers, we were enlightened on the path that we are going to take towards this journey. I'm so excited to face the hurdles next semester,” she concluded.

The event took place at the Premier Research of Science and Mathematics (PRISM) 4th Floor Conference Hall, where Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Ephrime B. Metillo graced the event to critique the symposium presenters.

Sedic’s paper on chitosan extraction won first place in the best paper competition during the 55th Federation of Institutions in Marine and Freshwater Studies (FIMFS) Annual Convention held last December 6-8, 2023 at the Mindanao State University - Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO).

Bou Obina, another participant in the event, noted that the presenters showcased their fields of study, even dating back from their undergraduate interests. “I was also amazed by Prof. Metillo's suggestions, guidance, and connection [to various interdisciplinary fields], and as an audience, I truly appreciate that the event gives new learnings and clarification [in recent research trends].”

Nonehar Sedic, a Master of Science in Marine Biology student and a paper presenter, told Ad Infinitum that the event helped advance marine science researchers in their research fields. “Overall, the goal of this event was to help aspiring marine enthusiasts to learn more about conservation and marine sustainability,” she stated.

To further appreciate the role of conserving endemic Philippine fauna, Dr. Lisa J. Paguntalan, executive director of the Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation, Inc. (PhilBio), opened the William L.R. Oliver “Only in the Philippines” section in the Natural Science Museum on December 12, from 9-11 am.

The event served as the culmination program of all regional leadership camps. There in the congress, MIDSA presented our key extension program which is the MIDSA Tinabangay 2022: Christmas Gift-Giving Initiatives for BooKIDS and Bantay Bata, through a poster presentation.

The MSU System, through MIDSA president RJ Castillon as the Official Representative of the MSU System, crafted a Manifesto of a Patriot Scholar. Castillon and other regional representatives also conducted a reading of it, which they later signed during the event.

The College of Science and Mathematics-Executive Council (CSM-EC), led by Governor Johanisah Naga, with KASAMA Senator Hafzah Imam and other student leaders within the College of Science and Mathematics, joined in “Empowering Change Together: a Diversity and Inclusion Dialogue” at the Premier Research Institute for Science and Mathematics (PRISM) function hall last December 11.

“The enlightening presentations from resource speakers broadened my understanding of the nuanced challenges student leaders face, shedding light on microdiscriminations prevalent at MSU-IIT,” she furthered.

“This experience highlights the importance of recognizing stereotypes as incomplete narratives, emphasizing that those in leadership roles must grasp this complexity to extend their reach to those in need, making a student leader's platform a key conduit for amplifying voices that often go unheard,” Gov. Naga added.

The dialogue was conducted by the Center for Learning and Academic Support Services (CLASS), in partnership with the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Services (OVCSS), Office of Student Development Services (OSDS), and the Kataastaasang Sanggunian ng mga Mag-aaral (KASAMA).

Asst. Prof. Yasmira P. Moner delivered a talk on the Principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, followed by workshops on unconscious bias led by Ms. Tessaly V. Saquin, RGC and leadership development on inclusive student governance by Asst. Prof. Ian Embradura.

In a statement to Ad Infinitum, Governor Naga expressed that the dialogue organized by CLASS stood as a pivotal platform, particularly for student leaders, that provided insights into navigating inclusivity in the university.

The event concluded with a commitment ceremony where all student leaders present uphold their role in fostering an inclusive community within the university as well as to share their knowledge and expertise to their constituents regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Asst. Prof. Phyllis Marie Teanco, Director of the Office of Student Development Services, noted that the program participants stayed for the quality of discussions, as well as the commitment for leaders to cascade the skills towards diversity and inclusion to their constituents.

“A handful of souls were present when we had our HIV [previous] dialogue event, and now though we are few, we are growing, and still, you took your time,” she concluded.

Over 70 Mobile Legends: Bang Bang enthusiasts from different MSU-IIT colleges attended the local edition of the M5 University Watch Fest hosted by Titans Esports in the PRISM 2nd Floor Conference Hall last December 2.

M5 is the fifth iteration of the “M series”, a global MLBB tournament.

This year’s tournament was hosted in the Philippines and involved 16 teams from all over the world.

The Watch Party commenced with students viewing the first match of Filipino team APBren vs Burmese Ghouls. APBren later won the event with a 2-0 sweep in the series. Titans ESports CEO Julius Anthony Magallon then welcomed IITians to the event. "As [the] organizer, it is an honor for us na marami ang nakapunta at maraming newcomers.”

Days don’t always come clean and kind.

Many blues have passed but still bearing with some of those, the whole body is exhausted from head down to the toes.

Expel all frustrations to a friend or through post, just don’t miss the part where we raise and do the toast!

New year doesn’t always mean new life for some, a different thing from the others to one may come.

Uncertainty they say is life’s absolute emblem, to take over it has always been one’s problem.

Fear of shortcomings is wondered how to avoid ’em, but no one knows really how, thus, no one could tell him.

Stories were written, others even got rewritten.

New faces are coming yet the number still continues to lessen.

Plans were fulfilled but haven’t yet felt by the system.
