VOICES Volume 7 June 2013 STATEMENT OF PHILOSOPHY The education of each student at Convent of the Sacred Heart is founded on the commitment to the Goals and Criteria of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. One such principle encourages students to be “active and informed” in today’s global world. Voices, a multilingual art and literary magazine, encourages each young woman to express her creative energy. It highlights student perspectives through prose and poetry in six different languages and multi-media artwork. This magazine is created by a dedicated group of students who give a louder voice to these languages by selecting writing and artwork from their student body. Translation is an essential creative element of the magazine, and each foreign language piece faces an English version to broaden the understanding of the written works.

La máscara Marguerite Sommer Un día me puse una máscara y desde entonces la luz desapareció.

La máscara me apretó despiadadamente la cara ocultándome en pavor, al buscar una salida.

Las paredes de cada cuarto parecieron estar cerrándose a mi alrededor y sentía la máscara arrancar mi cuerpo, como el agua que se lleva algo sumergido.

La superficie del agua desapareció y comencé a ahogarme en la soledad, y una vez que yo muera me sentaré en las playas del cielo, queriendo volver a revivir los días cuando llevaba la máscara.

La desato, me la quito, permito que mis pecados fluyan en confesiones.

Empezaré una nueva vida, una con valores y significado que yo no comprendía el día que me puse la máscara.

The Mask English version by the author One day I put on a mask and from then on the light disappeared.

The mask pressed harder into my face concealing me in fear as I looked for a way out.

The walls in every room seemed to be closing in around me and I felt the mask taking over my body, in the same way that water takes over something submerged.

The surface of the water disappeared and I began to drown in loneliness, and once I will have died I will sit on the shores of heaven, wanting to go back and re-live the times when I wore the mask I untie it, I take it off, and let my sins flow out in confessions.

I will begin a new life.

One with values and meanings I never knew the day I put on a mask.

Escape of Fire Bianca Chiappelloni “They’re following me! All of us!” gasped my mother, running towards my idling father and I as she clutched bundles of her fiery orange tunic dress, flailing the billowing fabric in an attempt to usher us forward. It really was no surprise that they spotted us, considering her attire alone could attract a thousand eyes: her scintillating reflection bouncing off of the clear surface of the City of Water, igniting the rippling waves of the canals in a fantastical flaming dance.

She left not one fortunate soul in her vicinity untouched, including those deprived of viewing the fleeting vision of her burning person.

Anything beautiful or pleasing was enough to provoke her open and joyful laughter, perking the ears of all those whom her melodious voice had left in its wake.

To the average khaki-clad tourist, the combination of her vivacious persona imbuing the air around my conservative, yet extraordinarily accepting father, would be quite a spectacle. Through the paradoxical unity of this couple, all the variety of Italian culture came to life. The Mediterranean mix of emotions, colors and flavors of personality could all be seen in this vibrant woman and her subdued husband.

My father, anticipating the coming shrieks if he did not follow the direction of my mother’s flapping skirts, took my hand, patting it while giving me the smile that only I knew meant that he loved my mother for her energy, not thinking it overwhelming in comparison to his energy. Then, he began his calm walk down the steps to the bottom of the creaking dock, pausing to allow my mother and I in front of him for protection against those whom my mother had claimed were behind us.

With his forest green hat and his hunting vest, he did not look like the man that should be married to such a gregarious woman. I, being the mixed daughter of the odd couple, did not appear like I should belong to either of them. My mother, so free flowing and bubbly, her dark bob bouncing from her ever-present energy, even when she was no longer moving. My dad, so reserved yet acutely aware of every one of your discomforts, always sought to make you feel more at home. Their balance, one would think, was found in their offspring, me.

Yet, I am not the balance. I am fully my mother, yet also fully my father. Both in one. I sway from being a replica of my mother’s personality when with one society, to the person of my father, when with others. I do not mean to change who I am, it is just that I am both. Each person is revealed depending on the circumstance.

My mother, latching onto my wrist, transferred her shocked and nervous energy into me, alerting me from the quiet thinking stupor both my father and I had fallen into. My mother now showed through me. Through her trembling fingers I could feel the unexpected and rhythmic pounding of her heart. Startled at the volume of the beating, I raised my gaze. Over her shoulder the images of the three men came into focus, and I realized that the beating was not just the sound of my mother’s blood rushing through her, but the sound of the men’s work boots on the old, rotting wood of the dock.

The men raced towards us, as we stood trapped at the water’s edge. Nearing us, they did not reduce their speeds. Sensing our doomed fate approaching, my father, mother, and I gathered together, clasping each other in an attempt to gain a rigid trust and fearlessness from each other.

When we squeezed our eyes shut, preparing for the blow that would throw our bundle into the chilling waters beside us, all went quiet. The thud of boots could not be heard. The uneven breaths of the men did not send hot shivers as they had two minutes prior.

Cracking my eyes to sneak a peek at the stillness around us, I saw the men on the opposite side of the dock, peacefully, yet quickly peeling off layers of clothing from under their heavy dark garb. Beneath it all, they brandished their Gondolier stripes. They were just late for their shift.

Realmente, no fue una sorpresa que ellos nos notaran, considerando su atuendo que atraía miles de miradas: un reflejo brillante que resaltaba de la clara superficie de la Ciudad del Agua, irradiando el brinco de las olas de los canales en una danza fantástica y llameante.

No dejó a ninguna dichosa alma cerca de ella sin afectarla, incluso aquellos privados de la visión fugaz de su resplandeciente presencia. Cada mínima maravilla o delectación era suficiente para iluminar su amplia y alegre risa, beneficiando a todos aquellos que su melodiosa voz alcanzaba.

Para los turistas vestidos en grisáceos colores, la combinación de su vivaz persona impregnada en el aire al lado de mi muy moderado pero receptivo padre, sería un espectáculo excelente. A través de esta paradójica pareja era como vivir indirectamente la variedad de la cultura italiana.

They dream of the future, Of rebuilding their broken society, Of making their imprint on Earth’s stiff surface, Of escaping the pressure of the moment.

They want to fix what they have, Mourn for what is not theirs, Yearn for all that is out of reach.

They never appreciate what they do have, The serenity of the rising sun, The beauty of the unknown.

The young ones, they dream Because they cannot see the good before their eyes.

Los niños de Sandy Hook In Memoriam Amanda Crowell

Mi primer día de escuela… yo recuerdo detalles insignificantes. Mi vestido. Mi amiga Christina que llevaba el mismo vestido, pero no nos importó. No existía la idea de competición. Mi autobús. Yo entré a esa máquina tan grande con mucho miedo, mucha incertidumbre, pero también con una luz en mi corazón. Había esperado cinco años para subir a ese autobús. Había mirado a mi hermano, Ryan, mientras él iba a ese lugar misterioso. ¿Puedes creerlo? Un autobús. ¡Yo estaba emocionada por un autobús! La vida era simple. Yo no podía esperar a entrar a esa escuela porque era el inicio de mi futuro.

Me bajé del autobús y vi el nombre: “Sandy Hook Elementary School” que estaba escrito en la pared. Todavía está escrito en la pared, después de todo este tiempo y todo lo que pasó. Algunas cosas nunca cambian. Había profesores y chicos y autobuses. My first day of school… I remember the most insignificant details. My dress. My friend Christina was wearing the same exact one, but it did not matter to us. Such pointless competition and jealousy had not yet tainted our innocent minds. My bus. I climbed up the steps onto the giant machine with fear and uncertainty… but also with an eager light in my heart. I had waited five years to enter this bus. I had watched my brother, Ryan, as the bus carried him away to some mysterious place that I only knew in my dreams.

Can you believe it? A bus… I was excited about a bus. What a simple life, where yellow boxes on wheels can fascinate my uncorrupted mind. I could not wait to begin kindergarten… it was the beginning of my future.

I skipped off the school bus and saw it: “Sandy Hook Elementary School” was written on the brick wall in giant green letters. Those letters remain on that wall today, after all this time and all that has happened. Some things never change. Everywhere I turned, I saw teachers and boys and girls and buses. My tiny feet walked me towards my new school. I was ready for all that would happen in this strange world called “school.” My teachers watched the young and eager faces of their new students and saw the future. From then on, I spent my childhood at Sandy Hook School.

I learned and smiled and sang and played with my friends. After five years, I left that school. I was ready to move on to a bigger and better school. I was grown up.

But other children were not as lucky as I. Those children arrived at school with a light in their eyes, just as I had. They learned and smiled and sang and played with friends, just as I had.

But some of them never got to leave that school. Why? There is no reason. There is no explanation. They were not ready to move on to a bigger and better school. They were not ready to leave us.

But they went to a place even bigger and more mysterious than any place I have ever been. They went to Heaven.

There are no words to express this tragedy. There is not a hug big enough to console the families of the children. There is not an eraser powerful enough to erase the horrible memories of the children that were lucky enough to live, but will forever be tainted by the terrifying images that they witnessed that day. There is nothing‌ nothing more than the emotions of our afflicted hearts. And our memory.

Aquella noche bajo las estrellas no dormí. Soñé. Cuánto soñé despierto y cuánto soñé dormido yo no sé. Sólo sé que un caballo blanco pobló mis sueños y los llenó de resonancia y de luz y de violencia.

Pasó el verano y entró el invierno. El verde pasto dió lugar a la blanca nieve. Las manadas bajaron de las sierras a los valles y cañadas. Me estrechó la mano un poco más fuerte que de ordinario y me dijo: ¡Esos son hombres! Nada más. Ni hacía falta. Nos entendíamos mi padre y yo muy bien. Yo hacía el papel de muy hombre pero aquella risa infantil y aquel grito que me andaban por dentro por poco estropean la impresión que yo quería dar.

Aquella noche casi no dormí y cuando dormí no supe que dormía. Pues el soñar es igual, cuando se sueña de veras, dormido o despierto. Al amanecer yo ya estaba de pie. Tenía que ir a ver al Mago. En cuanto aclaró salí al frío a buscarlo.

El potrero era grande. Tenía un bosque y una cañada. No se veía el Mago en ninguna parte pero yo me sentía seguro. Caminaba despacio, la cabeza toda llena de los acontecimientos de ayer y de los proyectos de mañana. De pronto me di cuenta que había andado mucho. Aprieto el paso. Miro aprensivo a todos lados. Empieza a entrarme el miedo. Sin saber voy corriendo. Cada vez más rápido.

No está. El Mago se ha escapado. Recorro cada rincón donde pudiera haberse agazapado. Sigo la huella. Veo que durante toda la noche el Mago anduvo sin cesar buscando, olfateando, una salida.

No la encontró. La inventó.

Seguí la huella que se dirigía directamente a la cerca. Y vi como el rastro no se detenía sino continuaba del otro lado.

And the view was becoming misty and blurry like a dream. The lively chat was silenced. All attentive to the vision awaked. Myth of the animal kingdom. Poem of the male world.

After Adela’s death I am having nightmares. I was afraid that Adela was going to be like Maria Josefa. What horror! Magadalena, Martirio, Angustias and Amelia could turn out to be like Paca la Roseta! What am I going to do? My daughters have to be virgins and not set their eyes on any man. They have to obey me! But after the incident with Pepe el Romano and Adela’s suicide the risk is that they will not do what I ask anymore. And this must not be so.

Magdalena, Angustias, Martirio and Amelia cannot leave this house. They are going to remain isolated until the day I die! Like Maria Josefa they could try to run away but they cannot, they want to get away but they are unable to do so because this is my house!

None of them is going to get married, not one. They will continue to embroider for me and for their own funerals and they will have nothing else in their lives.

I want my daughters to be virgins so that no one in the village can say anything about them. If my daughters don’t have a man, then no one will be able to gossip about them. If anyone one of them attempts to escape I will teach them a harsh lesson. None of my daughters will be like Adela. Never!

Every day, they want husbands. But Bernarda always says “No”. She locked up her mother in her room all alone. Bernarda does not think of her family’s welfare. She only thinks of Bernarda and her honor.

I have worked for her for many years. I have watched how she has been with her daughters. It’s bad. It is very, very bad. Bernarda is not a good mother. Sadly, she is the mother. She is a mother with all the power. Her power killed his daughter. Adela is dead. I wish I could change that.

Bernarda needs to change. I need to change her. Her daughters need her to change. Their mother needs to change. I will not work for a person who does not love their daughters. But I cannot. I do not have power. I don’t have her power.

Waiting outside the door, the sounds of you and him together at the window poured into my ears so that I could not shut them out. I heard the breaths and sighs and whispers. A wildfire consumed my whole body. It was envy. I wanted to feel the love of a man but was afraid of this love. I wanted to be touched and hugged and kissed to calm the heat that filled my arms and legs, chest and face pink.

I wanted to escape from this prison.

Then in a moment I lost control. I cried. Shouted, “mother” and of course, she came, familiar anger in her snake-like eyes.

Everything happened quickly after that point.

The sound of the bullet. The gasps of a sister. You ran, screaming and crying.

Where are you going?

I found you. Here you are, suspended in the air, the rope leaves crimson imprints on your pale, delicate neck. Here you are…dead.

Dead.

I do not know what I want now. I want nothing.

Ildara is nothing without her beauty. They do not want deformed people like her in those countries. There is no place for her now but here with me.

Work is all she can do. All she can do is work. Work, work, and work! I am going to look at her as she works, but I will never help her. She must be alone because she was going to leave me alone. Ildara must learn. She needs to take care of her father. We are a family. And family takes care of family.

I have been a hard worker all my life. Now Ildara should do the same. This is just how life works. You are born.

Your father and your mother take care of you. Then when you are old, you take care of your father and mother. This is reality. This is how most people live.

We are extremely poor. Sometimes I feel that Ildara does not understand. We have to work all our life to survive.

Without work, we will have no food, no home, and no life.

We will have nothing.

I love my daughter. Ildara is a hard worker. She listens to me. She takes care of me. But she was going to leave me. I don’t understand why she would leave me. I need her.

Mi belleza era mi boleto para lograr este sueño. En ese época estaba segura que viajaría a América un día y dejaría a mi padre.

Sin embargo este no iba a pasar. Mi padre con sus córneas ámbares y su apariencia disgustosa, vio mis medias. El se enfadó y dijo que mi madre nunca se preocupada de su apariencia y no lo deseaba tampoco.

El se dio cuenta que yo necesitaba mi belleza porque me ayudaría en mi vida futura. Él decidió que si no tenía mi belleza nunca podría dejarle porque no tendría las mismas oportunidades. Me golpeó la cara muchas veces hasta que no pude ver de un ojo y uno de mis dientes se cayó de mi boca.

My dream was to live freely, to live without my father. Every day I hoped that one-day I would not be victimized by Clodio. I wished to live in a happy place where I could decide what to do in my life - a place called America where gold is in the streets. This dream helped me to continue to work in my father’s house. The idea that I would be free one day, gave me hope. When I had to work and had to do everything for my father, this dream was the sustenance in my life. The red socks that I received represented my hope for the future. My beauty was my ticket to achieve this dream. At that time I was sure that I would travel to American one day and leave my father.

However, this was not the case. My father with his disgusting appearance, saw my stockings. He became furious and said that my mother never worried about her appearance and I should not either. He realized that I needed my beauty to help me in life. Therefore, he decided that if I did not have it I could never leave him, because I would not have the same opportunities. Because of this, he brutally hit my face multiple times until I could not see from one eye and a tooth fell from my mouth.

With this violence my father destroyed my dream. He destroyed my face and therefore my hope for the future. Now, I still live at home, working every day while he relaxes. It’s not fair but it is the social reality that exists today. Women, particularly the poor women of the world, are treated as inferiors. There are women all over the world who are abused like me and have no rights. These women and I need help. I am sharing my life story with the world because the abuse has to stop. I want to help other women with their dreams since my dream was destroyed. I am Ildara and I will never be free.

Production Notes Voices is published annually by a group of high school students at Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Connecticut. The magazine receives many submissions of artwork and writing and attempts to use as many of these pieces as possible to demonstrate the range of creative talents of the student body.
