Guide to Choosing Your Application Type
After taking a look at the different types of college applications, you may be asking yourself: Which application type(s) should I use? It’s possible not all of the schools on your College List use the same application type. Below are a list of questions you can ask yourself to help you decide which application types to use:
● What are the application option(s) for each school on my College List?
○ Research each college on your College List by reviewing each of their Admissions pages to see the various ways you can apply!
■ Is there more than one college that I am considering applying to that is available on the Common App?
● Then the Common App is a great choice in order to save time filling out separate applications!
■ Do I want to apply to more than one Historically Black College and University (HBCUs)?
● Are multiple of the HBCUs member institutions of the Common Black College App?
○ Then the CBCA is a great choice to save both time on the separate applications, and money on the separate application fees!
● Do I want to apply to colleges for free? If so,
○ Do I qualify for a fee waiver?
■ If yes, you can use a fee waiver to apply to college via both the Common App and Coalition App for free at any time, for any college!
■ If no, consider applying to some of your NC Colleges via CFNC’s Free Application Week in October, when you can apply for free without a fee waiver! Check back here early this fall to see what the 2023 dates will be and the list of NC Participating Colleges once they are posted.
● Do I want to be sure that each school I am applying to 1) graduates students with low to no debt and/or 2) will meet 100% of my demonstrated financial need?
○ Colleges that use the Coalition App must meet either or both of those criteria Find some colleges on the Coalition App and apply there!
