American writer Toni Morrison was the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2010 for her novel Beloved.

Wilma Rudolph was a decorated track and field Olympic medalist in 1956 and 1960, including three gold medals in 1960. She refused to attend a homecoming parade held in her honor unless it was integrated.
