In 2023, we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Crosby Scholars Community Partnership. Together, in the first thirty years of our organization, we have .graduated 14,264 Crosby Scholars seniors and helped to prepare them for ..college. The Class of 2023 was our 30th graduating class of Crosby Scholars ...with 1,054 graduates enrolling in 141 colleges and universities throughout ...North Carolina and across the world. We could not have impacted so many ..students, families and our community without you. The vision of the Crosby Scholars Community Partnership is for every Forsyth County public school student to have the opportunity to pursue education after high school. Crosby Scholars’ programming for 6th through 12th grade helps students ACHIEVE in and out of the classroom and contribute to the community through service. During the junior year, Crosby Scholars provides each student with an advisor to help students APPLY to college and scholarships. If a Crosby Scholar has unmet financial need to enroll in college, Crosby Scholars provides Last Dollar Grants to help graduates AFFORD college. Since 1992, Crosby Scholars has helped more than 35,000 students in preparing for successful college enrollment. We are grateful for the community support that allows us to help students pursue their dreams and reach their full potential. As a first-generation college student, I understand the importance of the lifetransforming possibilities that a college education can offer. Today, I believe that access to education and the opportunity to obtain a four-year degree, twoyear degree, or credential is life-changing. Education opens the doors to a new future. The Crosby Scholars Program shares this message with our youth, striving to create opportunity for social and economic mobility and make generational change in our community. As we embark on the community phase of our Achieve Apply Afford Capital Campaign, we thank you! Our affiliation with Goodwill of Northwest NC, our partnership with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, and many strategic collaborations have us well-positioned to connect with students and families for change. With generous supporters, a dedicated board of directors and staff, along with a caring community, we know the best is yet to come! Gratefully,

“I am incredibly grateful to receive the Last Dollar Grant from Crosby Scholars. The support not only lightens the financial burden but also reinforces my beliefs in the value of education.”

Crosby Scholars programming for 6th through 12th grade helps students ACHIEVE in and out of the classroom and contribute to the community through service. A member of Reagan High School’s Class of 2023, Samir Flagg has been academically successful and community-oriented as a member of several clubs, organizations, volunteer groups and more. However, most people do not know about the struggles he endured on his way to success. "Samir is incredibly kind, intelligent, and caring – he always helps other people,” said Stephanie Pearson, Flagg’s AP Environmental Science teacher. “I noticed he was sometimes late, but little did I know there were family members he was actually helping, and he sometimes had to work late the prior night.” Flagg has consistently remained both optimistic and involved in the local community despite hardships as a child. He tragically lost his father in an act of gun violence when he was eight years old, and his mother unexpectedly died when he was 10. Flagg has since lived with his uncle and, despite everything, has not let his experiences hinder his path to achievement. Samir is attending NC State University and plans to major in statistics and minor in entrepreneurship. - Jamison Bell, Staff Reporter for the Reagan High School Rooster & Crosby Scholar

During the junior year, the Crosby Scholars Program provides each student with an advisor to help students APPLY to college and to financial aid and scholarships. Class of 2023 Crosby Scholar Alecia Washington was the first African-American student to become Valedictorian at R.J. Reynolds High School in 100 years. Alecia is attending the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and was accepted to the Levine Scholars Program, UNC Charlotte’s premier merit scholarship valued at over $115,000. Alecia shared, “UNC Charlotte has always been a top choice of mine, and to go there on a full academic scholarship is amazing.” She is grateful for the opportunity to be a Levine Scholar to help her achieve success as a nursing student and a young humanitarian. “The Crosby Scholars Program has been a great support system for me throughout middle and high school. My Crosby Scholar Advisor has been a tremendous wealth of knowledge and support as I was applying to colleges and scholarship programs. My advisor read over my essays and made helpful suggestions, and also conducted a mock interview to help prepare me for the scholarship interview process. The actions and words of the Crosby Scholars’ staff made me feel supported and confident, for which I’m very grateful for.”

The vision of the Crosby Scholars Program is to ensure that every public school student in Forsyth County has the opportunity to attend college. Since 1993, the Program has awarded over 11 million dollars to Crosby Scholars graduates. If a Crosby Scholar has unmet financial need to enroll in college, Crosby Scholars provides Last Dollar Grants to help graduates AFFORD college. In 2022-23, we have awarded $296,290 in Scholarships and $933,620 in Last Dollar Grants. Robinson "Ross" Claytor of Mount Tabor High School was named Michael Nachman Scholar for the Crosby Scholars Class of 2023! This is an $8,000 scholarship awarded to the Crosby Scholars senior who holds the highest cumulative weighted GPA at the end of the second semester of senior year, and successfully completes the Crosby Scholars Program. Ross shared, "The Michael Nachman is a great award that will definitely help me and others in the future receive a higher education and use that education to make the world a better place." Ross is most proud of being able to use his skills to give back to others in need through creating an education company where he teaches math and software development. "I think that the most important thing is being able to look around and identify community needs and help others." Ross is attending Columbia University in New York City.

A Counselor’s View Stan Huck, long-time Director of School Counseling at Mount Tabor High School, knows how important it is for students to receive messages of encouragement. Huck, one of eight children, was a first-generation college student who graduated from Ohio University and then obtained his master’s degree in counseling from Ohio State University. “In high school, I wanted to go to college, and I wanted to be a teacher, that’s what I wanted to do, but I didn’t know how that was going to happen,” he said. “If it wasn’t for the opportunities that existed for me to learn about that, it would’ve been hard to do.” His oldest sister set an example for him, attending two years at Ohio University and then teaching at a small Catholic school while she completed her 4-year degree in education. "I don’t come from a city that had a program like Crosby Scholars,” Huck said. “Learning that there was this college access program that started with students in 6th grade was very powerful. There is a mountain of evidence that if students join Crosby Scholars and sustain their involvement and attend whatever workshop—if it is skill-building in any way— it’s benefitting them, they’re growing every day.” “They’re understanding why it’s important to stay in school, to attend class, to pay attention, to make good grades.”

“When students are in high school, going to Crosby Scholars workshops and advising sessions, they’re getting a triple dose of learning what they need to do and how they need to do it and asking questions. Now Crosby Scholars is doing another layer of advising for financial aid that is helping kids and families understand the dual decision of what you want to do and where you want to do it, but how it’s going to get paid for also.” Huck appreciates that Crosby Scholars requires buyin from the students. “Crosby Scholars doesn’t just let you join a club and sit in the back seat,” he said. “You have to engage; you have to be present. Within the time I’ve been here, I’ve seen a greater emphasis on reaching out to underrepresented students and getting families to understand how powerful this is, to make sacrifices to get to these programs, to get them involved.” Huck said many Crosby Scholars qualify for financial aid, and they often come from families who do not have a plan for how to pay for college. “I think that programs like this are incredibly important,” he said. “It has to go beyond the public education system, but it’s also got to be a partner with the public education system. Those elements are so uniquely the Crosby Scholars Program. It is a partner that works so closely with our school district and just continues to make big differences for our young people.”
