game preview TODAY’S MATCHUP Senior quarterback Trey Feeney finished 51 of 58 passing for 531 yards and six touchdowns in the Johnnies’ 49-10 win at Carleton last Saturday (Oct. 24) in Northfield. Senior wide receiver Riley Schwellenbach caught six passes for 126 yards and a touchdown. Another senior wideout, Thomas Jacobs had his second 10-catch game of the season for 88 yards and two touchdowns, which increased his team-leading total to 11. Junior running back Wyatt McCabe caught a career-high 11 passes for 87 yards and a touchdown. SJU’s defense held the Knights to 184 yards, 25:18 of possession and a 2-for-11 performance on third down. Gustavus Adolphus, meanwhile, passed for 405 yards in a 55-7 home win over Hamline. Junior quarterback Dylan Blount made his first appearance since the season opener, due to injury, and ended the day 21 of 32 passing for 370 yards and six touchdowns. Junior wideout Liam Frommelt caught six passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns, while junior Jacob Ginskey, who filled in for Blount at quarterback the previous five games, recorded six receptions for 83 yards and a score.

SERIES HISTORY Today’s game is the 92nd meeting between Saint John’s and Gustavus

Adolphus on the football field. The Johnnies are 55-33-3 all-time against the Gusties, including a 29-11-1 record here in Collegeville. SJU has won 35 of the last 38 meetings overall, including a 31-13 win over the Gusties last season in St. Peter.

RECORD-BREAKING DAY Feeney’s 51 pass completions last weekend at Carleton were an MIAC record, while the 531 passing yards were an SJU record. The previous conference mark for pass completions was 47 set by Augsburg’s Jordan Berg against Gustavus on Oct. 27, 2007. The MIAC record for passing yards in a game is 602, set by St. Thomas’ Tom Stallings against Bethel on Nov. 13, 1993. Feeney has now thrown for 2,798 yards and 34 touchdowns (to four interceptions) through seven games this season, crossing the 300-yard mark six times and surpassing 400 yards the last three games in a row.

49-10, AGAIN Last Saturday’s score of 49-10 was not a scorigami – that score has occurred three other times in SJU football history. The most recent? Last season’s victory over Carleton on Family Weekend. All four of the scores have come against a team from Northfield (the other two in back-to-back games vs. St. Olaf), and SJU has never lost a game when the score has been 49-10.

SCHWELLENBACH

RILEY IS ROLLING Schwellenbach has 21 receptions for 371 yards (17.7 avg.) and two touchdowns over his last two games. He is currently second in the MIAC with 698 receiving yards – five behind Frommelt’s 703 – – and is third with 45 receptions. Jacobs leads the conference with 11 receiving touchdowns and is second, one behind Macalester’s Paxton Boyd, with 47 catches.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN The Johnnies are 8-3 all-time on Halloween, including a 5-1 record in Collegeville: 1936 vs. Itasca J.C. (W, 39-0); 1941 vs. Augsburg (W, 25-6); 1958 vs. Concordia (L, 8-40); 1970 vs. Macalester (W, 31-6); 1992 vs. Macalester (W, 41-0); and 2015 vs. Augsburg (W, 42-14). What does being a Johnnie mean to you?

What were the reasons you chose to come to Saint John’s?

What is your best memory from your time on campus – on or off the field?

Being an all-around stand-up guy. It means being kind, respectful and treating people the right way. As an athlete, I think it’s especially important to represent the school well because people see you as a reflection of the football program and the university.

The gameday atmosphere is so special in Collegeville, and it gave me an opportunity to continue to play with my brother (Alex), who graduated last year.

Eating meals with teammates after morning workouts or practices in the winter and spring. Those meals seem to last way longer, and usually more people on the team are there – making it more memorable.

What is something people may not know about you?

Who are some of the people on campus who have had the biggest impact on you during your time at SJU?

I had eye surgery in fifth grade. They moved muscle from one of my eyes to help balance things out with my weaker eye. My eye doctor told me my depth perception is a little off because of the imbalance. But I’m not sure I believe him, especially when I’m out there playing football!

The obvious answer is the coaching staff. But besides that, the person who has had the biggest impact on me has to be “Boz” (accounting professor Warren Bostrom, who passed away last fall). He was my advisor not just in school, but in life. He helped get me through some personal struggles and always wanted the best for his students.

What is something people may not know about you? I’m an avid fisherman and love fishing on Lake Sagatagan for largemouth bass, or on the Mississippi or Sauk Rivers for smallmouth bass, any chance I get. Last spring I caught a 6-pound, 4-ounce bass on Lake Sag.

halloween treats abound for sju over the years There have been a lot more Halloween treats than tricks for the Saint John’s football team over the years. Today’s matchup marks the 11th time the Johnnies have played a game on the year’s spookiest day and they boast a record of 7-3 in those contests. That trend did not start off so successfully though. SJU was haunted three times by Concordia in matchups on the 31st day of October – falling 29-0 on a rain-soaked Moorhead field in 1931, 40-8 at home in 1958 and 20-0 on the road in 1964 (during a season in which the Cobbers finished as co-NAIA national champions). Sandwiched between those setbacks was a 39-0 Halloween win over Itasca Junior College in Collegeville in 1936 in which multi-sport standout Vedie Himsl (who later went on to briefly manage the Chicago Cubs) rushed for touchdowns of 50 and 55 yards, and a 31-0 night victory over Augsburg at Parade Stadium in Minneapolis in 1959. Since 1964, however, the Johnnies are a perfect 5-0 on All-Hallow’s Eve. And they’ve had their share of Halloween heroes. In 1970, wide receiver Dave Arnold hauled in touchdown catches of 30 and 28 yards in a 31-6 win at Macalester. He finished with six catches for 104 receiving yards in all. Then, in 1987, Dave Woodbeck carried

OCT. 31

the ball 23 times for 118 yards as SJU again beat the Scots 16-0 in St. Paul. The running backs continued to carry the day in 1992 when freshman Korey Dean made the most of his first collegiate start, rushing for five first-half touchdowns in another victory over Macalester, this one a 41-0 thrashing in Collegeville. “John started me and that’s what it did for my confidence, “Dean told the St. Cloud Times afterward. “I was ready for (the game). I was working hard in practice and it paid off.“

HIMSL

In 1998, it was Roland Buller’s time to shine, rushing for 115 yards in a 35-0 victory over St. Olaf to become the first Johnnie running back in three years to cross the 100-yard mark. But the biggest Halloween game numbers belong to Sam Sura, whose 4,031 career rushing yards are top in program history. He had 179 of that total in a 42-14 home victory over Augsburg on Oct. 31, 2015, while rushing for three touchdowns. That included a 78-yard scamper in the second half. He also hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nick Martin. “It’s no secret that a balanced offense is a great offense,” Sura told the Times afterward. “It opens up everything for me.“

Tight end tandem: Plum and Harren both making waves for SJU this season Getting big numbers from the tight end position is nothing new in the Saint John’s offense. Over the past several seasons alone, the Johnnies have had a three-time All-American in Alex Larson, followed by a back-toback All-American in Joey Gendreau. The team is still getting a similar level of production at tight end this fall, but it’s come with a twist. This time around, one player isn’t carrying the entire load. It’s been a two-man job. Charlie Plum, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound senior from Cretin-Derham Hall, and Andrew Harren, a 6-5, 230-pound senior out of Sauk Rapids, are seeing extensive playing time – sometimes both at once. And each player has responded. Heading into action today, Plum has 28 catches for 313 yards and four touchdowns while Harren has 16 receptions for 163 yards and two scores. Both players had key second-half touchdowns in a 24-21 season-opening win over Wisconsin-La Crosse on Sept. 5 while Plum hauled in a 42-yard touchdown pass in the Johnnies’ 42-16 victory over Bethel on Oct. 3. Then Harren laid out for a key 13-yard catch in the second half of a come-from-behind 33-23 win over Concordia on Oct. 17. “Andrew and I have always been in pretty much the same spot on the depth chart,” said Plum, who is back for a fifth season on a medical redshirt after breaking a thumb his freshman year. “We played JV together and we’ve steadily worked our way up. “Now that we’re both on the field for a majority of the time, it’s really cool. It gives us a chance to use the chemistry we’ve built, whether it’s making calls or deciding who runs what route. Which one of us gets the ball and which one is blocking doesn’t really matter. We’re both going to do whatever it takes to help us win.” Harren echoed that sentiment.

8

GoJohnnies.com

“It’s never been a contentious thing between us,” he said. “I was really excited when I heard he was coming back because we build off each other. We each have our strengths and weaknesses, but we lean on each other and ask for help. “I just think that’s a culture thing at Saint John’s too. You can compete with one another

for a spot and help each other at the same time. And the way it’s worked out, we’re both getting our touches. So that’s perfect.” Indeed, the Johnnie coaching staff couldn’t be happier with the way things are going. “They’re both athletic guys with bigger bodies,” SJU coach Gary Fasching said. “They both catch the ball well and run great routes. And

“I use it every day,” he said. “We have a few in the weight room and guys are always working with it. I think the fact that so many of our players use it is a testament to how effective it is. You get a really good stretch.” Plum and Harren are now focused on stretching out the Johnnies’ season as long as possible. “This team is special enough to win a national title and that should be our goal,” Plum said. “That’s not easy to do. We have to keep getting better every time out. But we have the talent to make it happen.” “That’s the ultimate goal,” Harren added. “It would be the perfect way to go out.” they’ve each stepped up and made plays when we’ve needed them to. I think every game we’ve played so far, one or both of them have come up with huge catches.”

helped me and I don’t want it to disappear. Hopefully, it honors his legacy a little bit.” Harren is among those who’ve tried it and come away impressed.

Plum and Harren are excelling off the field as well. Harren, an accounting major, is a returning All-MIAC academic selection who already has a job offer from a big four accounting firm in the Twin Cities. Plum, meanwhile, has developed his own calf-stretching device and plans to begin marketing it in January. He already has a website set up (rigsramp.com). “I’ve been working on it for about a yearand-a-half,” the exercise and health science major said. “My original plan was to go to physical therapy school next year. But I’ve started to get some really good traction so I think I’m going to give myself a year and ahalf to go all in on this. “I had a mentor going back to high school named Roger Erickson (a noted St. Paul fitness, hydration and flexibility trainer),” Plum continued. “I started going to him because I couldn’t stop spraining my ankles. He got me interested in physical therapy. He’d come up with something similar (to the calf-stretching device) when he was doing work for the Baltimore Ravens (through fellow Cretin-Derham Hall graduate Matt Birk) about 25 years ago. “When he passed away (in 2024), I got one of his original pieces of equipment. He’d never really tried to sell it. But I modified it and made it a little different. I know how much it OCT. 31

SJU football community asked to help family in need Makayla Mooney, wife of former Saint John’s football player Andrew Mooney, is a beloved daycare provider and local Saint Joseph resident who is just 27 years old and facing an unimaginable fight. Makayla recently suffered a sudden brain bleed and stroke. Even more heartbreaking, she is four months pregnant with the couple’s first child. A GoFundMe has been created to support Makayla and Andrew during this incredibly difficult time. If you’re able, please consider donating or sharing their fundraiser, which will help Makayla and Andrew cover mounting medical bills,

future surgeries, everyday household expenses and lost income while her daycare is closed. You can find the donation link by scanning the QR code located on this page. Every contribution and every share can make a difference. Let’s come together as a community and show the Mooney family they’re not facing this fight alone.

All-American Profile Baptism by fire helped make Redepenning a dominant force on Johnnie offensive line For Jesse Redepenning, the road to becoming a two-time AllAmerican started when the offensive tackle from Lac qui Parle Valley High School arrived at Saint John’s as a freshman in the fall of 1993. Almost immediately, he found himself across the line of scrimmage from standout defensive lineman Jim Wagner, who went on to be named that season’s MIAC lineman of the year.

“I was pretty quiet as a sophomore, but by my junior and senior seasons, I think I was the worst trash talker on the team,” he recalled with a laugh. “I probably talked too much. “I just got more confident in myself. I started to realize I was talented enough to be a pretty good player at this level.” A math major at SJU, Redepenning spent a bit of time in the Twin Cities after graduation. But he soon realized life in the metro was not for him. So he returned home to

Western Minnesota where he has remained ever since. He’s now a business banker for Minnwest Bank handling farm loans. “I knew I wanted to get into the banking world,” he said. “It took me awhile to work my way up, but I got here. “I really enjoy being in this area. It’s home for me.“

“It was like the second day of practice and they brought me up from the freshman team thinking I might have a chance against him,” Redepenning said. “The very first play, I went flying about 8 to 10 feet backward. It was a pretty good wakeup call when it came to learning what the competition was going to be like there. But Redepenning, who entered fall camp that year weighing 210 pounds, kept at it. By Christmas, a steady regimen of lifting weights had him up to 265. And as a sophomore the following year, he earned a spot in the starting lineup on a team that advanced to the NCAA Division III national semifinals. Even if there were still a few bumpy moments along the way. “I think I jumped offside at least once in seven straight games my sophomore season,” he said. “(Head coach) John (Gagliardi) would get so mad at me. Then he started to realize we scored a touchdown on every single one of those drives. “So at least the penalties didn’t seem to hurt.“ Redepenning only grew more dominant from there, earning All-MIAC and AllAmerican honors as a junior and senior in 1995 and ’96. By his own admission, he also got a little (well … a lot) more vocal.

Support the Next Generation of Johnnies on Give SJU Day Owen Skram answers eloquently when the senior is asked what he likes best about being part of the Saint John’s community. “Being a Johnnie means someone will always have your back,” he said. “Someone is always looking out for you. It really is a second family. There’s so many people in your corner who want you to succeed.” Never is that illustrated better than on Give SJU Day, the annual 24-hour drive that serves as the hallmark fundraising event for Student Fund scholarships. That fund provides direct financial support to Saint John’s students – 98 percent of whom receive some form of scholarships or financial aid to help make their SJU experience possible. This year’s event is scheduled for Nov. 18. Last year, a total of $1,098,808 was raised, marking the second-straight year the $1 million threshold was crossed.

“It’s really a day when the Johnnie community comes together to support our students,” said Charlie Raasch ’18, the interim director of annual giving at SJU. “Alumni, parents, friends, employees. Anyone who cares about Saint John’s has an opportunity to be part of it. “And the best thing is every gift – no matter what the size – goes directly toward providing scholarships for the next generation of Johnnies.”

• Help achieve challenges for new donors, young alumni donors, Johnnie Sustainers and more. • Use social sharing buttons (Facebook, X (Twitter), Linkedin, texting and email links) to generate gifts. Inspire others to give and you can earn incentives!

Your investment on Give SJU Day will generate an additional return. Every gift made that day, regardless of the amount, is matched by $100 from the Saint John’s Alumni Association through the first 1,300 donors. Beyond that, there are several other ways to lend a hand: • Position your gift as a class match to help your class lead the way for number of donors.

football facilities

An autumnal playground, the natural bowl in which Clemens Stadium sits has been home to Saint Johnʼs University football for 118 years. Ringed by the gorgeous fall colors of the surrounding Central Minnesota woods, the field has long become a destination spot, a status only solidified when Sports Illustrated named it one of college footballʼs top 10 “Dream Destinations” in 1999. Those vivid surroundings, coupled with the programʼs rich history of success, has consistently translated into large crowds. SJU has finished among the

GAGLIARDI FIELD

national leaders in per-game attendance in NCAA Division Ill in each of the last 21 seasons – including crowds of 10,000 or more 26 times since 2001. That included a facility-record 17,327 for a matchup against St. Thomas on Sept. 26, 2015 – a day in which ESPNʼs “Sports Center on the Road” program was broadcast live from the stadium.

Across the road, meanwhile, sits Gagliardi Field, named after legendary former head coach John Gagliardi, the winningest coach in college football history. The facility was made possible by gifts from more than 50 individual donors, many of whom were former players. The artificial turf field has markings for a full-length football field, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, two cross-court soccer fields, baseball and softball, along with three batting cages when the Skalicky Dome goes up from October to April each academic year.

Hansen, Obering came a long way to make their marks at SJU For Matt Hansen, it was a

decision made easier by family connections in Central Minnesota. For Chandler Obering, it meant setting a course for an area with which he was unfamiliar. But both seniors say a desire to experience new surroundings drew them to the football program at Saint John’s. “I was definitely looking to go out of state,” said Hansen, a graduate of Niwot (Colorado) High School who has handled the kicking and punting duties for the Johnnies the past two seasons. “I wanted to branch out and explore new parts of the country. I’d say the biggest draw at Saint

John’s was the athletic flexibility. I had the ability to try both football and soccer at first, then later to add track and field.”

Hansen’s mother, Sarah (Omann) Roberts, is a Sartell High School graduate who ran cross country and track and field at CSB. Most of her family still resides in the area, providing Hansen with a much-appreciated network of support. “It’s definitely been easier having family nearby,” said Hansen, whose 77 extra points as a junior was a single-season program record and who currently ranks seventh on the school’s career list. “I got injured last spring and I had to go to St. Cloud Orthopedic two times a week. My grandpa was there with a ride every single time. He always hosts a meal at his house after home games. So family members who are coming from out of state to see me play have a place to go.” Obering, meanwhile, also wanted a change of pace. The 6-foot-4, 295-pound defensive lineman out of Villa Park (California) High School looked at both Saint John’s and Linfield (Oregon) during the recruiting process before deciding to enroll in Collegeville in the fall of 2022. “I wanted to do something

different,” said Obering, who is back for a fifth season on a medical redshirt and is in his second season as a starter on the defensive line. “I didn’t want to do the same thing with all of the same guys. “I came out here for a visit and saw snow for the first time. I just fell in love with the atmosphere. I knew it was the right fit for me.” Hansen and Obering are not alone. The two are part of a group of 35 players on this season’s roster who come from locales other than the five-state (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North and South Dakota) area. In addition to Colorado and California, they represent Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska, Florida, Arizona, Texas, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Washington, Alaska and Hawaii. “Our bread and butter is always going to be Central Minnesota and the Twin Cities when it comes to recruiting,” Johnnies coach Gary Fasching said. “That’s where the majority of our players come from. But we love getting out-of-state kids here too. They add a lot to our program. We’ve had a pretty big group of guys who’ve helped us a lot in that group over the past decade or so. “The key is building a culture where everybody feels welcome. And for that, I have to credit our Minnesota players. They make sure they reach out to the guys from further away. When holidays come up, and those guys can’t get home because we’re still practicing, they make sure they take them into their own families.

it without the people here. I call them a second family. My teammates, Coach Dumo (Damien Dumonceaux), the friends I made. That camaraderie made me stay.” Hansen too cited a sense of community as one of the things he loves best about SJU. “There are so many opportunities to get involved and get to know people,” he said. “I’d tell someone coming here from out of state not to be afraid of branching out. Go to school events. Join groups. Everyone here is really welcoming. “And if you’re on an athletic team, you have an automatic friend group right there. Four of my five roommates now play football and the fifth one did in the past. This team is like a built-in family.”

Hansen is spending this semester as a product owner intern at Trinity Logistics helping develop a project he himself pitched to the CTO during an internship there this past summer. He works virtually for the company’s headquarters, which is located in Delaware. Obering, meanwhile, will graduate in December and plans to get his master’s degree at Loras (Iowa) while also helping out as a strength-and-conditioning coach under head football coach Brandon Novak ’01, the former defensive coordinator at SJU. “Coming here turned out to be the best decision I ever made,” said Obering, whose father, Mike, liked Minnesota enough to move here and now resides near Duluth. “My time at Saint John’s has been amazing.”

They go out of their way to make sure those guys don’t feel too homesick.” That’s certainly been the case for Obering, who said his coaches and teammates have been there for him throughout his time on campus. That support came in handy when he suffered a season-ending injury during the preseason his freshman year. “That was hard because I’d just gotten to campus and I didn’t have anyone out here I knew,” he said. “But I’m not a quitter, and even though it seemed scary, I was determined to stick it out. I’m the first one in my family to go to college and I didn’t want to let a setback like that make me give it up. “It ended up working out just fine and I’m glad I stuck it out. But I couldn’t have done
