The Saint John’s swimming and diving team is coming off one of its best seasons in two decades a year ago. The Johnnies captured nine MIAC titles in 2024-25, nearly doubling 2023-24’s five. SJU finished second of six teams at the MIAC Championships, its third second-place finish in four seasons.
Nationally, Saint John’s ranked 36th—the best national ranking since 2004-05 (22nd). SJU collected three All-America honors, its most since 2010-11 (six). But, with five graduating All-MIAC performers, the pool inside the Warner Palaestra will feature plenty of new faces as SJU looks to build off that success.
Junior Cody Watts (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) returns to lead the Johnnie diving corps after participating at last season’s NCAA Diving Regional. He finished 10th in the 1-meter dive (392.50) and 15th on the 3-meter board (361.95). He collected his second All-MIAC honor with a third-place score in the 1-meter dive at the MIAC Championships for the second year in a row. Watts has already been named the MIAC Diver of the Week (his third career honor) after winning the 11-diver versions of both the 1- (335.05) and 3-meter (302.25) boards at Hamline’s Diving Invitational on Oct. 11. Watts will look to replace Eli Grabinski ‘25 on the podium after Grabinski earned a pair of All-America honors at the 2025 NCAA Division III Championships. He finished eighth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 463.70 to become the first Johnnie diver to finish in the top eight at nationals since 2021 J-Club Hall of Honor inductee John Deters ‘92 in 1992 (fifth in the 3-meter dive and eighth on the 1-meter board).
Joining Watts on the boards this season is senior Tim Rotter (Blaine, Minn.), sophomore Henry Hilgendorf (Owatonna, Minn.) and freshman Austin Durfee (West Valley City, Utah/Kearns). Rotter finished fifth on both the 1- (383.35) and 3-meter (386.95) dives at last season’s MIAC meet, while Hilgendorf was seventh on each. Sophomore Nate Krotzer (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park), who traditionally swims backstroke for the
Johnnies, scored four points with a 13th-place finish on the 1-meter at the conference meet.
The Johnnies took home first in three of five relays at the 2025 conference meet. SJU touched the wall first in the 200-yard (1:22.21), 400-yard (3:03.22) and 800-yard (6:46.79) freestyle relays. SJU finished second in the 200 medley (1:32.63) – behind Gustavus Adolphus’ 1:31.17 – and the 400 medley (3:23.50) – trailing GAC’s 3:20.82.
A pair of senior Johnnies, Carsten Reuter (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) and Brayden Slavik (Green Isle, Minn./Chaska), each won individual MIAC championships in 2025. Reuter won the 50-yard free (20.56) and is a three-time MIAC champion and 11-time All-MIAC honoree. His championship time of 20.56 ranks second on the program all-time list behind national champion Matt Zelen ’99. Slavik, meanwhile, is the reigning MIAC Swimmer of the Year after Gustavus fifthyear Peyton Richardson, who shared the award with Slavik after earning the most individual points at the 2025 conference meet, graduated. Slavik broke three program records, including two of his own, to win the 400-yard IM (4:00.12), 500-yard free (4:29.49) and 1,650-yard free (15:32.98).
The titles in the 400-yard IM and 1,650yard free were the second-consecutive for Slavik, who also served as the first leg of the Johnnies’ 800-yard free relay that broke the school record with a time of 6:46.79 to win the program’s first MIAC championship in the event. He enters this season as a six-time MIAC champion (five individual and one relay) and 10-time AllMIAC honoree (top three at the conference meet). Slavik earned All-America honorable mention honors with a 15th-place finish in the 1,650-yard free – the program’s first in the event – at the 2025 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.
Sixteen returning upperclassmen combined
for 227 individual points for SJU last season. In total, the group has scored 530 points in their careers. Reuter, Slavik and Watts earned five All-MIAC honors and four championships. Reuter, Slavik and senior Clay Megaw (Monticello, Minn.) all swam on at least one of SJU’s five All-MIAC relays. Megaw finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.34) and ninth in the 200yard version (2:10.58) at the 2025 conference meet. He currently owns the fourth fastest times in SJU history in both events.
A trio of sophomores scored points for SJU at the MIAC Championships as freshmen in 2025. Riley Yerks (Hutchinson, Minn.) took 11th in the 200-yard back (2:02.59) for six points. Jason Jones (Monticello, Minn.) combined for 13 total, taking seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.99), 12th in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.37) and 16th in the 200-yard IM (2:02.90).
The Johnnies open the season Saturday, Oct. 18, in a triangular with Hamline and Minnesota-Morris in one of two home meets in the Warner Palaestra Pool. SJU then travels for four duals: Macalester (Oct. 25), St. Olaf (Nov. 1), Wisconsin-La Crosse (Nov. 8) and Division II St. Cloud State (Nov. 8.). The team competes at the Rochester Invitational – hosted by St. Cloud State – in their final meet of 2025 from Dec. 4-6. SJU starts 2026 at the Luther Sprint Invitational (Jan. 10) before traveling to Gustavus Adolphus for a dual on Jan. 17. The dual-meet schedule is capped by Senior Day against Carleton on Jan. 24. Two more road meets, including a diving invitational, lead up to the 2026 MIAC Championships on Feb. 11-14 at the University of Minnesota’s Jean Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. The 2026 NCAA Division III Championships are scheduled for March 18-21 at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.

Ben Gill enters his seventh season as SJU’s head swimming and diving coach in 2025-26.
During his tenure, his athletes have recorded 120 All-MIAC performances, 32 during the 2024-25 season alone. That includes 20 conference championships (counting relays), seven alone coming a year ago when he was also named MIAC men’s coach of the year.
As a team, SJU has finished second or third in all six of his previous seasons as head coach.
Under his watch, three athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet and he has coached four AllAmericans (two during a COVID-abbreviated schedule in 2020-21 when there was no national meet).
The 2007 St. Cloud State University graduate previously served as the head men’s and women’s coach at Loras (Iowa) College.
The Duhawks sent athletes to nationals in each of his final three seasons at the school and collected six All-America honors. His Loras teams totaled 64 AllConference honors, including 14 conference champions.
Prior to Loras, Gill was the head coach at the La Crosse (Wis.) Area Family YMCA from 2014-15. Eight of Gill’s athletes qualified for YMCA Nationals and his team placed third at the YMCA state meet, in which multiple state champions were crowned across different age groups.
He was also a graduate assistant coach at his alma mater for two seasons (2012-14) and coached nine Division II AllAmericans. The SCSU women won back-to-back Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships during his tenure there.
Gill’s coaching experience also includes stops at the St. Cloud YMCA (2011-12), the Fox Cities YMCA in Appleton, Wis. (200911) and as an assistant at the College of Saint Benedict (200708). Gill was also a deck coach at Stanford’s swim camp during the summer of 2008.
2024-25 Season:
• The Johnnies finished second out of six teams Feb. 19-22 at
the 2025 MIAC Championships and 36th out of 47 teams March 19-22 at the NCAA Division III Championships. Brayden Slavik ‘26 was named the MIAC Co-Swimmer of the Year while Gill was awarded the conference’s Coach of the Year title. Diver Eli Grabinski ‘25 and Slavik both qualified for the national meet, each earning All-America honors. Grabinski finished eighth on the 1-meter board and 14th on the 3-meter, while Slavik took 15th in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
2023-24 Season:
• SJU swimming and diving finished third out of six teams at the MIAC Championships. Eli Grabinski ’25 won the 3-meter dive and was named the MIAC Men’s Diver of the Year for the third-straight season, while Carter Larson ’25 placed first in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and Brayden Slavik ’26 won the 400-yard individual medley and 1,650-yard freestyle to give SJU a total of five conference titles, the program’s most since 2003 (6). Grabinski competed at the NCAA Regional in Ohio and just missed qualifying for one of the six NCAA bids and was an alternate for the NCAA Championships. He finished fourth in the 1-meter dive and sixth on the 3-meter board.
Additional Coaching Staff
Elise Morell Diving Coach Second Season
Elise (Genereux) Morell is in her fifth season as an assistant coach in 2025-26. A 2012 graduate of Saint Benedict, Morell qualified for the MIAC Championships in the 1- and 3-meter dives all four years, and finished 12th on both boards as a senior in 2012. After graduating from CSB, Morell coached the boys’ and girls’ diving squads at St. Cloud Apollo High School for seven seasons.

The Saint John’s swimming and diving team takes an annual training trip to Puerto Rico during winter break between the first and second semesters. It’s a time to enjoy the tropical weather while putting in valuable work in the pool.
SPONSOR AND CONTRACTOR FOR JOHNNIE
Athletics at Saint Ben’s and Saint John’s isn’t just stats and PRs. It’s self-discipline and perseverance and time management and friendships for a lifetime. It’s another tool for student success. And results show it’s a powerful one.
Are you ready to compete as a Bennie or a Johnnie? Come take a closer look –schedule a campus visit today!
The Warner Palaestra pool is home to the Johnnie swimming and diving team. The pool was built as part of the original Warner Palaestra Athletic Complex in 1973. The Warner Palaestra Pool includes a regulation sized, eight-lane, 25-yard pool, one-meter and three-meter spring boards and a fivemeter platform.
The Warner Palaestra Pool is also open to club sport and general student use during the course of the academic year. Saint John’s water polo has seen significant success in the Warner Palaestra pool in recent years.
That’s what Saint John’s University junior Cole Stencel enjoys most about life in Collegeville.
The connection the physics major on a pre-engineering track feels with his professors and peers in the classroom, the connection he feels with his coaches and teammates on the Johnnies cross country and track and field teams, and the connection he feels to the natural beauty that surrounds him each and every day.
“We talk a lot about community here, but it’s really true,” Stencel said. “This is a very tight-knit place. You get to know everyone really well and you form lasting relationships. It’s also a very outdoorsy college, which is something I really enjoy. There are lakes right outside your door. There are acres and acres of woods and trails. I don’t know of any other campus that has this many natural resources.”
A Maple River High School graduate, Stencel made the dean’s list last semester and is also involved in SJU Campus Ministry.
“They really encourage you to get involved in the community here and that’s a good thing,” Stencel said. “Campus life makes up such a big part of the college experience. I’ve met so many people who I know are going to be my friends for a lifetime.”
Stencel’s interest in engineering springs from his father, Jay, a civil engineering instructor at South Central College in Mankato.
“That’s how I first got acquainted with the field and the concepts,” said Cole, who plans to attend graduate school, then pursue a career in the mechanical engineering field. “He was the one who told me to check out the kind of jobs that are available and everything engineering
entails. The more I got to know about it, the more it appealed to me.”
Stencel said the individual attention he gets from his professors at SJU is helping prepare him for future success.
“I feel really comfortable here,” he said. “There’s a big sense of belonging. There’s a lot of one-on-one time with the faculty. If I have a question, I feel like I can go to any of my professors and talk it over with them. That means a lot.”
But Stencel said his SJU experience would likely not have been possible were it not for the assistance scholarships have provided. He currently receives the John Drahmann Memorial Scholarship, as well as an academic achievement and alumni referral scholarship.
“That helped cut my bill more than in half right away, which made coming here so much more achievable,” he said.
“I just want to say thank you to all the donors who make it possible for students like me to be immersed in this amazing college experience. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. So I’m extremely grateful.”

Pat Haws ’72 (inducted 2019)
Pat Haws (head coach, inducted 2019) - The swimming and diving coach at Saint John’s from 1973 to 1998, Pat Haws built the program into an MIAC power. During his tenure, his teams placed in the top three at the conference championships in 23 of 25 seasons –including 15 runner-up finishes. There were also 11 finishes in the top 25 at the Division III national meet. In all, his swimmers earned All-American honors 40 times and won two national championships. There was also one U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier.
Matt Zelen (swimmer, inducted 2019) - Matt Zelen became just the second SJU swimmer or diver to win a national title when he won the 50-yard freestyle at the NCAA Division III national meet in 1999. But by then, he had already had earned All-American distinction at nationals six times as a freshman, sophomore and junior. He also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 100-yard freestyle that year, giving him a total of nine All-American performances in all. That went along with 13 MIAC titles in individual events and relays as well as four other second-place finishes at the conference meet. He remains the
school record holder in three events – the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
Jon Deters (diver, inducted 2021) A transfer from Iowa State at the semester break of his freshman year, Jon Deters went on to qualify for the NCAA Division III national meet four-straight seasons - earning All-American honors seven times. That included his junior season when he earned the program’s first national title by winning the 1-meter competition. He also won three-straight MIAC titles in both the 1 and 3-meter competitions during his time at the school.
Jon Habben (swimmer, inducted 2022) Habben was the first Johnnie swimmer to touch the wall as an MIAC champion when he won the 50yard freestyle at the conference meet as
a freshman in 1976. Two years later, he became the first SJU swimmer to touch the wall as an All-American when he finished 10th in the same event at the 1978 NCAA Division III championships. All told, Habben won a total of eight MIAC titles and qualified for nationals four times.
Tom Kubinski (swimmer, inducted 2023) A standout at Osseo High School, Tom Kubinski went on to win two conference titles in the 100 freestyle and three-straight in the 50 freestyle during his time at SJU. His time in the 50 at the 1983 MIAC meet –20.90 seconds – was not only a pool and conference record, but made him the first swimmer at the Division III level to break the 21-second mark in the event. He finished sixth in the 50 at nationals this season, then eighth as both a sophomore and senior. In total, he earned All-MIAC honors on eight occasions and All-American honors six times.
Luke Vestrum (swimmer, inducted 2024) Vestrum finished his career with nine conference titles (counting relays), second in program history only to Zelen’s 13. As a junior, he earned All-American distinction three times at that season’s Division III national meet as the Johnnies finished sixth in the 200 freestyle relay, ninth in the 200 medley relay and 10th in the 400 freestyle relay. He has continued to swim after college, competing at the U.S. Masters level. He holds five Minnesota Masters state records and won the national title in the 50 breaststroke in his age group, while placing second in the 50 freestyle, backstroke and butterfly in 2017. He was also the national runner-up in the 50 backstroke in 2015.
