It is our privilege to welcome you to the 2024-2025 performance season at California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV)! We are delighted to have you join us for our eighth season of showstopping performances, concerts, events, and more, all showcasing the tireless work and dedication of our exceptionally talented students and faculty.

The inspiring devotion and passion of our CSArts-SGV community has not gone unnoticed. Our school is currently ranked the #1 Best Charter High School in California, the #3 Best Public High School in Los Angeles County, and the #4 Best High School for the Arts in America by Niche. CSArts-SGV also holds the title of Best Charter School in the San Gabriel Valley by Pasadena Star-News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, and Whittier Daily News.

Established in 2017, California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV) offers a dynamic school culture that enables students to flourish as artists and scholars. The school currently serves a diverse student body of approximately 1,200 students in grades 6-12.

Students in grades 6-8 receive their academic instruction through the Duarte Unified School District (DUSD) and their arts classes through the CSArts-SGV conservatory program. Beginning in grade 9, students attend classes full-time on the CSArts-SGV campus.

In addition to offering a challenging college-preparatory academic program that produces high-achieving, motivated scholars, CSArts-SGV provides aspiring young artists with the opportunity to refine their skills and flourish in one of 11 arts conservatories. Each year, students participate in more than 60 concerts, recitals, staged performances, and exhibitions at a variety of venues, providing students with the unique experience of entertaining and inspiring hundreds of audience members.

CSArts-SGV is a donation-dependent public charter school; no student is offered or denied admission based on financial capacity.

The school’s rigorous academic education coupled with advanced arts training impacts many students, molding creative thinkers, leaders, artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

Program Notes for Padilla Villancicos

By LAURA RODRIGUEZ, Vocal Arts Conservatory, 12th grade SO, WHAT IS A VILLANCICO? Think “villancico” and your mind might go straight to Christmas carols - and you’d be half right. But these tunes are more than just holiday songs.They bring joy, they make people dance, sway, and perhaps cry. Cause it sure made me cry when I got handed 60 pages of sheet music. They’re musical shape-shifters: born in the streets and courtly circles of Renaissance Spain, sung in the grand cathedrals of the Baroque, and steeped in joy, drama, and deep devotion.

Originally, villancicos were catchy, poetic songs sung in the people’s everyday life. But by the 17th century, they’d gone sacred—invited into church services, draped in liturgical robes, and handed a starring role in festivals like Christmas.

Till today, you might not ever have heard of a villancico or you just didn’t know. Think of them as the musical bridge between the divine and the daily—sermons in song form, painted with rhythm and rhyme. Do you think villancicos will make a comeback or will we continue to only hear them within churches and cathedrals?

FROM IBERIA TO THE AMERICAS When Spain crossed the seas, villancicos tagged along.

Once they hit New Spain (a.k.a. colonial Latin America), things got interesting. Picture this: Spanish choirs in Mexico City cathedrals, blending European counterpoint with Indigenous rhythms, African influences, and local color.

These weren’t just imports, they were musical mashups, genre-bending soundtracks to a changing world.

They spread on the wings of pliegos sueltos (17th-century sheet music), manuscripts, and word of mouth, carried by choirs, convents, and street musicians alike. From Puebla to Peru, villancicos became the heartbeat of festive worship, a soundtrack of sacred celebration.

WHEN MUSIC TALKS ABOUT MUSIC (AND GOD) Some villancicos sing about shepherds. Others are about the baby Jesus. But some, they go full Inception: songs about music, within music, about the divine harmony of the universe.

Yeah, they get deep.

These metamusical villancicos draw from Neoplatonic theology (a fancy term for “earthly things reflect heavenly truths”). They imagine Christ not just as savior but as song itself - the ultimate melody that brings cosmic order out of chaos. In this world, every harmony hints at heaven. Every dissonance aches for resolution. And the choir? A stand-in for creation, tuning itself to divine pitch.

BREAK DOWN: “Corazón deshecho al aire” roughly translates to “heart broken in the air.” This heart isn’t just the physical organ, it can also mean courage, spirit, or love. Right away, the text paints an image of deep vulnerability. It sets a tone that feels raw, emotional, and even spiritual. The heart is scattered into the air, exposed, fragile, and carrying the weight of pain.

The goldfinch (jilguero), often seen as a delicate and beautiful bird known for its song, becomes a powerful symbol in the poem. Here, the goldfinch is lost, drifting in the wind, and it begins to cry out when “silence is arbitrary.” Its song turns into a kind of mourning — a soulful, aching cry — that clashes with the pressure to stay quiet. There’s this emotional tension throughout the poem: between speaking and staying silent, between pain and self-control, between wanting to express and needing to hold back.

The goldfinch isn’t suffering because it’s singing, it’s suffering because of “feelings repressed in harmony.” It’s holding everything inside, living in a world where silence is expected.

But at the same time, love is shown as something sacred and mysterious, something hidden behind veils. And the references to light, fire, and heavenly forces (like lightning and glory) show that this isn’t just about everyday sadness. It’s about transformation. Suffering, in this poem, leads to something deeper: grace, joy, even salvation.

BREAK DOWN (CONTINUED): The coplas might be sung by soloists, as if they’re personal thoughts or inner reflections: like the voice inside the goldfinch’s heart. Meanwhile, dramatic and powerful lines like “Oigan” and “Llegad a comer” sound more like something a choir would sing together. These lines call out to the listeners, urging them to witness and be part of the emotional and spiritual journey. It’s in those moments that we can imagine the goldfinch beginning to find peace, maybe even experiencing something like a spiritual release.

In the end, these villancicos explore big ideas like love, silence, and transformation. They show that even in quiet suffering, there’s strength and beauty. And that even a shattered heart can rise again, glowing with something new.

WHY THIS MUSIC STILL MATTERS Villancicos are full of contradictions, and that’s what makes them exciting. They’re sacred but often playful. Theological, but theatrical. Rooted in Spanish ritual, yet blooming with New World spirit. They don’t just tell the story of faith - they dance it, paint it, whisper it, and shout it from the choir loft.

In an age where sacred music can feel distant or stiff, villancicos remind us that devotion can groove. That we can have a beat. That worship can wear a smile. So tonight, as these centuries-old songs fill the air again, let them pull you into a world where heaven sings, and the Earth answers back in harmony.

CSArts Academy offers extracurricular arts training to student artists in the community, ages 8-15. Join us for fun and rewarding summer classes!

Join us on our beautiful San Gabriel Valley campus to try a new art form and break out of your comfort zone! Each summer, CSArts Academy offers One-Week Arts Intensives, which provide young artists with a chance to discover new talents, study innovative techniques, or hone their skills in a specific medium.

These week-long summer intensives provide specialized arts training in a multitude of disciplines, including creative writing, dance, theatre, visual arts, and more.
