cover story#18 Welcome back to Selhurst Park – and welcome back to the matchday programme, where we are celebrating 100 years of football at this very stadium, from 1924 to the present day. Every edition of the programme this season will feature a special handillustrated cover, marking one of the many landmark dates that have made this such a unique place over the last century.

his week we’ve arrived at 2010 – a pivotal moment in Crystal Palace and Selhurst Park history. Palace had been docked 10 points for entering administration in January and for much of the first half of that year were teetering the brink of a crisis as League One beckoned. The events of ‘Survival Sunday’ – a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Sheffield Wednesday, perhaps the most important game in club history – ensured that the Eagles had survived relegation. But just over four weeks later, the future still appeared bleak. On 31st May, it was announced that if a deal wasn’t struck within 24 hours, the club would be liquidated. Cue major protests from supporters, at both Selhurst and Lloyds Bank’s headquarters in London, who effectively owned the stadium. The protests, represented on today’s cover, ultimately made the difference.
These efforts prompted a response of further talks with Steve Parish and the CPFC 2010 consortium – which would ultimately save the club. Illustrated alongside the four members of the consortium and the protesters is our feature interviewee for this issue, Nathaniel Clyne. Now well into his second spell with the Eagles, Clyne was also part of the squad that achieved survival in the Championship that season. The eagle-eyed amongst you have probably also spotted a young Wilfried Zaha and a hero of ‘Survival Sunday’ also protesting. It’s fair to say both Nathaniel Clyne and Crystal Palace have come a long way since the defender’s debut back in October 2008.
