Bournemouth came mightily close to upsetting champions Liverpool on the opening night of the Premier League season at Anfield. Although they were eventually beaten by two late goals from the Reds, they had put the rest of the league on notice of possible chinks in Liverpool’s armour.

In a strong position off the field thanks to the investment of billionaire owner Bill Foley, the next question is whether the Cherries can deliver European qualification – from either their league position or via a major trophy. Last season their hope of qualifying for Europe were still alive with three games to go. Although they eventually came up short, their league form pointed towards a team on the up.

When Bournemouth were relegated from the Premier League five years ago, fans could have been forgiven for thinking they were about to bid farewell to the greatest era in the club’s history. Eddie Howe had masterminded a rise from the bottom of League Two – on -17 points and looking destined for non-league – all the way to a nineth place finish in the Premier League and surviving for four seasons. Yet that record finish was matched last season, under the leadership of the highly impressive Spanish coach Andoni Iraola. In addition, the 2024/25 points total was another record for the club. His appointment two years ago has proved a masterstroke, and last season certainly enhanced his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting coaches.
Excellent form has continued since. Tottenham were beaten on their own patch and the usually competent Brighton and Fulham were both well beaten at Dean Court. England Under-21 hero Alex Scott has started to look a star in the midfield, while Antoine Semenyo’s flying start to the season has cemented his reputation as one of the league’s best forwards. Even if Semenyo, or Evanilson, are having a rare off-day, Iraola can call upon the likes of Justin Kluivert, Ben Doak or Ryan Christie from the bench. Bournemouth are an intelligent, energetic side, with their transition play up there with the best teams in the Premier League.

match recap Bournemouth produced a stunning late fightback as Antoine Semenyo scored twice to down Fulham in the Friday night football. Ryan Sessegnon had given Fulham the lead when he ran onto a through ball from Samuel Chukwueze before clipping the ball over Cherries keeper Djordje Petrovic. But Semenyo turned the game with a wonderful piece of individual skill in the 78th minute. The Ghana forward beat several players and stopped the ball going over the byline, before slotting a shot through Bernd Leno's legs. A wonderful strike from substitute Justin Kluivert completed the turnaround, before Semenyo scored a second to ensure the Cherries went into the international break in the Champions League places.
