The summer saw AEK Larnaca navigate a demanding Europa League qualifying campaign – eliminating Partizan Belgrade, NK Celje, and Legia Warsaw in impressive fashion – but the dream came to an end at the final hurdle. A 6-1 aggregate defeat to Norwegian outfit SK Brann saw the Yellow-greens drop into the Conference League, returning to a competition they last featured in during the 2022/23 season – reaching the Round of 16 before falling to eventual winners West Ham. While missing out on the Europa League group stage was a setback, Imanol Idiakez’s side have responded with character on domestic soil. Their 2–0 win over Paralimni on Saturday lifted them to 13 points from their opening seven league matches, keeping them firmly in title contention near the top of the Cypriot First Division. That result followed a convincing return from the international break. Hrvoje Milicevic gave AEK the lead from the spot on 28 minutes after Dorde Ivanovic was denied a goalscoring opportunity by a handball. Just after the restart, Ivanovic doubled the advantage with a composed finish – controlling a loose clearance, skipping past his
marker, and driving a low shot into the far corner. Their league campaign began with a confident 2–0 win over AEL Limassol, courtesy of an Enzo Cabrera brace. A hard-fought 1–1 draw away at Anorthosis followed, where Milicevic’s first-half penalty was cancelled out in the second half against the run of play. A narrow 1–0 defeat to Omonia – settled by a late Carel Eiting goal – remains AEK’s only league loss so far this season. They quickly bounced back in style, securing back-to-back wins in late September. Against Aris, despite falling behind early, Larnaca responded with goals from Milicevic, Ivanovic, and Joan Ledes – the latter a long-range thunderbolt – to edge a thrilling 3–2 victory. That momentum carried into a dominant 4–0 rout of Krasava, with Riad Bajic scoring twice, Milicevic adding his third of the season, and Yerson Chacón rounding things off. Aside from a 4–2 stumble against Pafos prior to the October international break, AEK’s attacking form remains strong. A bold statement was made in their Conference League opener, with Larnaca dismantling AZ Alkmaar 4–0, that result has given the supporters confidence that this will be a memorable season – both domestically and further afield.

The opener came on 28 minutes, when Hrvoje Milicevic converted from the penalty spot after a handball denied Ivanovic a clear goalscoring opportunity. Just after the restart, Ivanovic doubled AEK’s lead. A whipped cross was only half-cleared, falling kindly to the forward, who controlled well, skipped past his marker, and finished confidently into the far corner. The result ensured AEK returned from the international break with all three points, keeping them firmly in the hunt for the top-four – and in good form ahead of a European trip to Selhurst Park.
