Returning to our match against Burnley that seems so long ago, I can only say it was not the best night for us. The first-half they surprised us, as we had expected them to play more direct football. We spoke at half-time and changed our approach and the second-half was much better from us: we moved the ball quicker, we pushed higher up the pitch and we created some chances. In the end I don’t think we deserved to lose but what can you do; that is football. At Leicester, a team we have performed well against in my seasons here so far, it was a slow start to the second-half and an unfortunate slip from Mama that took the game from us. But there are times when you cannot always focus on the negatives and the mistakes. As captain, I must look at the positives. Of course, we discuss the mistakes and defeats but we have to
look forward, too. Jaïro played well in the midfield with myself and Macca and we were all so happy for Tyrick to earn a Premier League debut. I spoke to him throughout his time on the pitch, when out of possession, to help him find the tempo of the game. But when he was on the ball, the team trusted him to do what was right, and he did. I enjoy seeing Tyrick, Sam, Nik and Brandon on our bench, it shows the future of our club. Liverpool, Leicester City, Chelsea and Manchester United, playing four of the potential Champions League qualifiers for next season in our first seven games after the restart was always going to be a tough period. But against Chelsea I felt we showed what this squad is all about. To not avoid defeat against them was unfair; we deserved something from this game. I was

ready to celebrate from the bench when Scott’s header went past their ‘keeper but I still cannot believe it hit the post and didn’t go in. To reply the way Wilf did – one of the best goals I have ever been on the pitch to see – and then to immediately score through Christian after their third highlighted the skill and strong mentality of this squad. I hope we continue that performance in tonight’s game against Manchester United – another team who are in good form after the league’s return. They have many attacking players but we have demonstrated our defensive qualities on a lot of occasions. We still have lots to play for in our final three games, as we look to achieve the club’s highest Premier League points total. To do this we need you to… Make some noise!

Division Three championship medal 1920/21 awarded to Palace’s Alan Wood. Having arrived the season before, Wood made 19 appearances and scored six goals in the title-winning season. With the club’s announcement over the summer that is was staking its claim as the world’s oldest professional football club with a clear lineage back to 1861, we launched the Palace in the Attic campaign. 68

On this occasion he thought there might be ‘trouble’, so he bought me a ticket for the New Stand. He still went on the terrace, though (his funds probably did not stretch to two stand tickets!)."
