CDMICA: Cultural Diversity and Material Imagination in Canadian Architecture the various methods and materials of construction of canadian heritage sites representing canada’s cultural diversity between 1850-1925 were explored through two summer terms of research. the research involved the thorough documentation, digitization, and dissemenination of these models from sophisticated point cloud data.

the clients of this modest cottage design were interested in maximizing their views to blue sea lake while minimizing the impact to the environment. the orientation of the walls and the generous windows capitalize on the existing voids in the natural landscape while the cottage layout conforms to the subtle grade variation.

urban housing the desire for densification in sandy hill, ottawa is addressed by two-forty collide. designed to house two hundred and forty residential units of the various demographics as well as a strong commercial streetscape, the development features bridge units linking each of the larger components. the intersecting public spaces invite pedestrian traffic from each side of the site and promote the interaction of the inhabitants.

neurodegenerative lipidomic visualizations [CHIR grant, 2010]

the CIHR training program in neurodegenerative lipidomics is a trans-institutional program and collaborative initiative between an interdisciplinary team of researchers at the university of ottawa, carleton university, university of toronto, sunnybrook health sciences centre, and ottawa hospital research institute (OHRI). the program applies a targeted systems approach to integrative research that promotes and facilitates cross-disciplinary training and knowledge exchange in order to stimulate new insights to advance critical research in neurodegenerative lipidomics. my role was the architectural representation and visualization of hemichannel connexins, gap junction, and neurodegenerative processes - a direct collaboration with the neural regeneration laboratory of dr. s.l. bennett (university of ottawa). modeled and rendered with maya software. * http://www.med.uottawa.ca/lipidomics/program.html

these images depict connexins, a family of over twenty proteins, which are expressed differentially throughout the human body with eleven members expressed in the central nervous system. six connexins assemble into a trans-membrane channel called a connexon with an aqueous pore that permits the passage of small metabolites under one kilaDalton in size.

the rehabilitation of canada’s west block parliament building is a collaboration project between CIMS (carleton immersive media studio) + PWGSC (public works and government services canada) the creation of BIM (building information model) was achieved by capturing structural and aesthetic deformities unique to the heritage of west block through a series of laser scan data, survey scan data, architectural drawings, and orthographic photos. the resulting model adresses heritage conservation and will be used for facilities management and future maintenance of the national historic site. * project carried out with CIMS colleagues Dr. Stephen Fai, Martine Gallant, James Hayes, Marcus Poon and Jesse Rafeiro.

in a remote village high in the peruvian andes sits a XVII century earthen church working as a consultant for the getty conservation institute under the seismic retrofitting project, the goal was to develop a glossary of deterioration conditions that currently exist on the original interior wall paintings and identify the location of each condition across each surface. the process involved travelling to the site for the three separate phases, producing orthographic photos, assessing the condition of the wall paintings graphically, and collaborating with conservation specialists and the peruvian ministry of culture. * project phases completed with Claudia Cancino, Jesslyn Granda (phase II), Ilana Hadad (II), Tim Michiels (II & III), Christian Ouimet (I), Kenneth Percy (I), Mario Santanta Quintero (I & II), Clemencia Vernaza (II & III).

the integrated project work of the poortersloge in bruges was a multidiscipinary effort that combined a thorough analysis of the history, urban fabric, architecture and technical aspects of the 15th century heritage building to determine a thoughtful conservation plan. a complete total station survey of the site was complimented by on-site measurements, exterior photogrammetric models, digital measured drawings and a series of laser scans of the iconic tower. * project carried out with RLICC colleagues Sofia Psaltakou, Thomas RIgauts and Maud Rochez

This academic research characterizes the legacy of Industrial Heritage in Santiago de Cuba and initiates a dialogue on how this heritage can be managed in terms of architectural conservation as well as how it can be utilized as a catalyst for sustainable development in the Historic Urban Landscape of which it is an integral part. The dialogue is introduced with a case study of La Fåbrica de Cerveza Hatuey. The research provides an analysis of the abandoned Embotelladora on the factory’s site including its history, context, architectural and technical aspects, and socio-economic role in Santiago de Cuba.

The context of Cuba is of paramount relevance and as the research argues, every aspect of the Embotelladora is affected by its environment. The lack of foreign development since Cuba’s Revolution in 1959 has left the country relatively unaltered in terms of its architectural heritage. Dilapidated buildings define and romanticize the image of Cuba and now present both an opportunity and a challenge for conservators to reclaim the essence of the Cuban aesthetic.

The research draws attention to the values of adaptive reuse in industrial heritage, specifically in the context of post-Revolutionary Cuba where the Historic Urban Landscape has remained largely intact for the last 55 years. However, there are several environmental, economic, touristic and contextual actors that continuously pose a threat to this heritage and require thoughtful examination. This research analyzes the perceived threats to this heritage and identifies feasible solutions to safeguard it from further deterioration.

The final section of this thesis explores five viable options for an adaptive reuse reprogramming of the Embotelladora, each one approaching the various challenges that the built heritage of Santiago de Cuba faces from a unique lens. In the end, an informed decision is made and an adaptive reuse design of a Culinary Institute is presented. The Culinary Institute functions as a sustainable facility incorporating a learning centre, an organic urban garden, a small gallery and a restaurant, with the promise of revitalizing the vulnerable neighbourhood of San Pedrito in the Historic Urban Landscape of Santiago de Cuba.
