Edgmere - Urban Renabilitation NYCP Queens, New York - Shoreline Assessment Working with community groups and parter agencies to analyze and assess neighborhoods within Manhattan that are vulnerable to tidal flooding and rising coastal sea levels while also planning for the future of 100 year storm.

Edgemere is an inlet, greatly effected by gradual yearly sea level rise as well as tidal flooding. It is only one of the many areas looked at with a resiliency plan and the scope of developing and rehabilitating existing infrastructure.

Edgemere 2050 - Scenario I, Reactive Public Sector

NYC does not suffer another coastal storm of Sandy’s magnitude and therefore no major Federal investments are made in coastal protection; however, Edgemere continues to frequently flood. Many insured homeowners experiencing repetitive losses eventually sell their homes to FEMA which transfers them to the City. As insurance becomes increasingly unaffordable and potential buyers struggle to get financing, some homeowners walk away from their land. The propeties remain vacant for years and gradually erode into Jamaica Bay. The City continues a policy of incrementally raising streets and infrastructure that connects to existing houses. As houses are bought or taken by the city after years of abandonment the foortprint of the streets retracts. Over the years from 2025- 2050, the city spends tens of millions of dollars incrementally elevating these streets. This investment is highly vulnerable and experts agree that a Category 4 storm could wash streets and the connected housing inot the Atlantic Ocean.

Edgemere 2050 - Scenario II - Active Public Sector With political will and funding available in the wake of Hurricane Sancy, the Army Corps of Engineers begins coastal protection on the Atlantic Coast with regime of continual beach nourishment and hurricane gates at the mouth of Jamaica Bay. As a response to growing area of daily tidal inundation, the City raises the shorlines around Jamaica Bay and provides upland drainage basins for storm water. A continuous pedestrian path links a series of freshwater and saltwater wetlands along this edge, providing the premier wildlife watching destination to the region.

The City prohibits new construction within the most vulnerable areas and works with the Federal government to buy-out property, arrange land swamps, or structure reverse morgages to eventually acquire all the coastal properties in Edgemere. The city owned property above Beach Channel Boulevard is infilled with housing that provides homeownership opportunities for lower and middle income households. Some multi-family housing and neighborhood retail is built closer to the subway stations and the Arverne East development area. Infrastructure, schools and other neighborhood amentities follow the growth of population. Edgemere is living well near the water.

The most vital piece of the design would be the infrastructure, establishing a power grid that runs systems of sustaining life withing and around it. Completely secured environments would allow for an equal live/work environment allowing for one million enhabitants to have a lively community oriented and creative atmosphere of learning and doing.

Recreational and agricultural program would be roughly around 70% of the area withing the structure, cleaning the environment and encouraging the importance of adaptive agricultural methods in order to sustain life within a new atmosphere. We welcome the biology to morph the future of our lives just as all other living creatures on earth have done.

100% Walkable City On Earth, paved surface catered for automobiles consume around 75% of the valuable space surrounding our living areas. With increased populations these areas are only being directed for expansion instead of obsoletion. Therefore, we begin by establishing that there will be no personal use vehicles within our city.

Valuable yet scarce space is of most importance to us, therefore we give way to a more natural landscape to surround us and enhabit us. As our structure of housing, living, learning and working spaces grow, so does the natural elements.

The Need for Creative Thinkers as Practicioners The scientists are the first enhabitants of Mars City that would set the routes for a more diverse program. In order for this to happen they would need students to learn the techniques and skills for survival in facilities that would promote and expand education. New technologies would be the developmental tools used to expand the city. Enhabitants of the city have the opportunity to combine science with creativity to have a more culturally diverse lifestyle. And no longer will scientist have a 12-hour work day but be able to share a city that is equally taken care of, enjoyable and used by creative minds.

A 20 minute walkign distance from the main center and key points would allow residents to be in a safer/cleaner atmosphere. All residents are within close proximity to all programs with public light rails, permiable walking surfaces and bike paths: Altogether encouraging a more social atmosphere.

Urban Development: The Protective Barrier Research & Design Istanbul, Turkey Mentor: Sima Kunttas

During the summer of 2013, Istanbul and the rest of the country of Turkey experienced an event of social upheaval against the political injustice, social unrest, and rapid urban development in the eyes of globalization.

The site of my choice for my thesis research and design development is the Theodosian Land Walls, once an area important for its purpose to protect the city now lies as the only remains of historical connection between a grown cities today and a past under threat. The low-income neighborhoods along the walls allows the area to lack any advancement in knowledge, transportation and care by others in the city. The area is also the only oldest known existing urban farms surrounding ancient ruins This leaves its grounds able of being unrighteously developed by the Municipality of the city.

The barrier New Neighborhood stands to protect the city from any future invasion, protecting the historical city from rapid urban development. Together the communities begin to unite and form their own barrier against political and social injustrice.

Its structure is penetrated by pedestrian accessways, to express the power of people and emphasize the strength of seeing a future with the glimpse of our pasts and how it educates us to move forward positively.

Transformation of Historical Peninsula

Organic Produce Farming & Packaging Zone The main tower in this area of the neighborhood functions as a transport hub for farm grown produce.

The existing factory on the other side is re-purposed for re-use to serve the new functions and needs of the community. By packaging and having local produce distributed from existing farms gets rid of transportation and inflated costs on foods being brought to the city from great distances.

Sports Center Towers & Paths These towers and promenade decks respond directly to the existing Sports Arena in context as well as providing recreational indoor and outdoor fitness and health knowledge spaces for the community in a lucious green zone where walking pathways and bicycle paths providing a fresh outdoor area for the communities in the neighborhoods to make natural use of.

Performing Arts Towers & Zones These towers and open spaces on the promenade allow for what the community is losing today, the areas and spaces to learn and express art in any form because of Municipality restrictions and control on public and peoples lives. The spaces consist of indoor and outdoor stages and studios allowing social gathering and expression to take place. The live and work sections of these dispersed towers also provide private and public areas where the community can learn and express themselves through art on a promenade open to the entire public.

Hydroponic Farming Tower & Zone The community has lost their knowledge and understanding of what farming means to the existance of a community and existance and withstanding of the city for over two-thousand years. Hydroponic Farming is new way of farming efficiently within a city where soil is no longer available but still providing naturaly grown produce to the community. These farms are both indoor and outdoor in the facilities, allowing community members to interact and learn from the existing farms which shows an old way of cultivation, and the towers within the barrier that provide the new way of growing natural for a growing population.

Student Housing Art and Library Galleries While the city continues to grow and universities exist in the center of the city, housing for incoming students allows them quick access to the new transportation train station of Yedikule as well as locates them within the new city of the Barrier. They are provided with jobs, local food source, learning, and training all within the Barrier. The Libraries allow them resources of the city as well as private areas of study. Galleries accomodate for their display of their work, learning and teachings to the surrounding communities Their location right at the tip and entry below by car into the city signifies a young generations importance to the cities survival.

The new development would be a collaborative of the neighborhoods coming together to design and build. However its’ structure would allow access from both sides of the Highway that is currently extremely difficult and dangerous to cross.

This new neighborhoods public platforms would cater to the needs to each neighborhood; to either be education facilities, cultural entities, or facilities to help the agricultural producation to sustain within the area by assisting its production rates with new technology to assist the old way of farming. This design is to encourage the imagination.

The public promenade and elevated platform exist atom the existing road, providing a safer area for people to roam as well as experience cultural, and residential times together.

Biz Yedikuleliyiz Documentary As ongoing research, Biz Yedikuleliyiz is a documentary touching upon the lives of common citizens in a small neighborhood along the southern edges of Istanbul’s historical peninsulas’ Theodosian land walls. The seen footage is captured between the years of 2013 and summer of 2015. The voices and sounds you hear in the video are those of past and current residents, neighborhood sounds that are meant to depict moments and most influential and meaningful things that make the neighborhood so unique like many others in the vast and growing city of Istanbul.

The mapping of the context, and closing comments are suggests upon the growing issues that are effecting every major city in today’s time, that our cities are losing their most meaningful, influential and empowering mechanisms for human skill, neighborhood meaning, and depletion of scarce resources.

Productive Barter

Pro-Rural to Heal the Urban Neighborhood Santa Cruz, Rio de Janeiro Brazil Team: Tin Yan Cheung, Guillermo Ramirez Daniel Laimer In the context of Rio de Janeiro’s rapid westward urbanization, “Productive Barter” project proposes a new symbiotic model relationship between urban and rural developments.

Currently compartmentalized urban and rural developments in Rio Metropolitan Area are geared towards urban expansion into underutilized rural lands instead of densification and renovation of the existing urban fabric. This is resulting in rapid and haphazard development, housing deficiencies, inadequate infrastructure, lack of localized employment opportunities as well as waste and water pollution. Productive Bartering Project will establish a dynamic linkage between urban and rural uses by creating developmental exchanges facilitated by a new regulatory framework. A new Regulatory Agency has been proposed for this model that will first focus on the problematic areas where the urban and rural meet while providing opportunities for the new and existing communities.

Santa Cruz, a neighborhood currently located at the western urban rural edge of Rio de Janeiro, where the substantial farmlands still exist, is currently the target for exploitative social housing developments. Our project proposes to create a new transitional zone that will provide productive housing and infrastructural opportunities while rehabilitating the existing fabric and agricultural lands. By designating areas for rural development while providing balanced investment to urban, we foresee that the existing dense center of Santa Cruz will be able to sustainably densify to allow rural lands to remain and become more productive. Instead of randomly urbanizing cheap rural lands in the

outskirts, new rural developments will be encouraged to become limited transitional zones forming a protective band around the urban core.

Local companies and institutions such as EMBRAPA (an agricultural research company) and Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro (a federal agricultural university), both in Rio de Janeiro, are expected to engage in promoting research farming through innovative technology and in connecting potential business partners in agricultural production. These connections are expected to support existing neighborhoods to promote local food production and consumption. Along with the agricultural productivity, long term collaboration with other supporting companies (Brazil Premium Foods, Cia Orgânica, Usibras, etc.) are expected to provide employment opportunities in Santa Cruz. This will attract mixed income and mixed occupation individuals and families to move into the new “Rur-Urb” development.

Developers will be incentivized to engage in this “WIN-WIN” initiative by the Regulatory Agency, enabling local neighborhoods to pro-actively shape and improve the existing urban fabric while creating long term framework for bottom up development. Over time a series of small scale surgical site interventions which demonstrate the “win-win” would occur. These new measures have the potential of bringing the much needed investments to the urban core, making it a magnet for future densification. Instead of growing outwards, Santa Cruz would begin to heal its urban core through strategic implementation of new and productive “Rur-Urb” developments.





 

Additive Enterprise is a framework to spur the transformation of urban corridors by promoting the growth and success of small businesses. By re-purposing existing vacant buildings and parcels the project strategically clusters and supports small enterprises, educational opportunities and new public spaces within the city. In Newburgh, this transformation takes place along the William and Dubois Street corridor that connects two of the city’s key anchor institutions, South Middle School and St Mary’s College. The corridor provides new spaces that can serve as incubators for art, media , technology and food entrepreneurs while promoting greater community interaction.

This is achieved through three strategies: Engage, Activate and Expand.

The project engages with the existing skills of the workforce while creating a place for art, media , technology and food while promoting and opportunity for hands-on learning as well as support to establish startup businesses through Make [in] Newburgh, the network of Hardware, Art, and Kitchen Incubators. These would activate the buildings along the corridor by generating an incremental growth of small businesses, which FT. 8 MI would bring a critical mass of interaction N SQto the street while L transforming it into mixed used neighborhood.

Make [in] New50% 30% 54% burgh, is a non-for-profit with partnership to educational and community organization such as Boces, Suny, Safe Harbors of US SALES COMMERCIAL SPACE GROWTH IN JOBS the Hudson, and Habitat for Humanity. These provide a programmatic link for people along the corridor to explore new possibilities, to build upon their experiences or learn new skills, and to inspire new ventures. The City of Newburgh would promote a more active public realm to better allow people and neighborhoods to safely connect and interact. Finally, the process expands through scaling up and promoting businesses through the Cultural Expo-center, overlooking the Hudson River that showcases the skills, products and services that various enterprises can offer within the Hudson River Valley region.

Nosara Recycling Center & Education Facility Nosara, Costa Rica Team: Michael Koutsoubis Dimitri Malliakis Advisor: Tobias Holler

The Competition A semester-long process of charettes and design presentations until presented to jury members, academic, community and invited experts.

One single board with all elements of design were to be submitted and reviwed.

Trip to Site & Community Engagement After the winning teams were announced, the team traveled to Nosara, Costa Rica to participate in on-site analysis, presentation of design to the communities of San Jose and Nosara. The full in depth site analysis was to take place, both for calculationa and re-iteration to design problems.

Presented to students, faculty and professionals of an art and architecture university in San Jose took place.

As part of research the analysis and tours of different recycling centers in San Jose and towns in close proximity to their facility to assist in maximum potential and design quality of the new facility.

The Nosara community expressed their deepest gratitude and need for such a facility to help clean their growing dump site situated in the middle of their largest forest lands. The advantage of this facility would be to include 1+ educational elements and areas where students, community members and visitors could come to experience the process and learn from the education of recycling unused waste.

Kickstarter was the main platform to raise funds for construction material as well as cost of travel/stay for volunteer students to construct building over the consecutive 2 years The team of 20+ student from the submission groups were able to send students over 3 semesters and summer terms to assist in construction which took place 6days/week in weather permitting conditions.

Today’s the Nosara community is fully using the facility not only for recycling but has enhabited both central area as visitors center and educational classroom. As intended, it helps in teaching younger school students the responsibility of recycling and how the entire process happens when trash is collected to sorting, packing and shipping for sales and recycling companies.

Sherman Creek Park, NYRP’s renovation project allowed many aspiring architectural firms to enroll and make design submissions towards the renewal of the underutilized and poluted watersides of the Inwood Community as part of their parks restoration projects.

Sherman Creek’s history used to consist of many boathouses for the community in the surrounding area when rowing was popular. As the neighborhood changed over many years, this sport deminished as well as its knowledge in the use of its waterfront for such purposes. The wealthy elite left the area and the site became a lot for illegal dumping of waste/water pollution.

Our proposal comprised of one joint structure with many different areas for education; both covered and uncovered. The linear design sat along the “edge” of the site, to avoid excavation too far into the site and also to protect the shadows cast on the water, its slenderness eliminated this.

The design included green roof, water collection system, vernal pools, easy access and exit for those coming by boat or by land as well as an entire structure that would assist against storm damage and protect the things inside if needed.

The objective of this design was to capture the surrounding green spaces and create an internal oasis, special to the people of the community to experience within a facility that provided to their needs towards public recreation and competitive events.

Revamping, and uplifting an existing faรงade of a current client on W Houston St. and Broadway in New York were the design/build challenges of the class.

Our teams design envisioned an iconic form that would emblemize the flow with a material as tough as steel.

Each panel was bolted together to make the complete double-sided panel. The mixed material usage allowed for minimal light flare from the steel, while also allowing LED lights to be inserted for night viewing and display of this unique facade.
